I forgot to mention. Figure drawing is a great place to reflect on your own ideal tempo. When you're given a timer to draw something... 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 7 minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes.... you'll probably find that knowing about that timer will cause you to draw either faster or slower. I used to always find that I loved my 5 minute drawings, but the longer poses always felt stiff and worse...(the 2 minute ones were usually terrible also)... it took me a long long time to realize that it was related to the pacing I was drawing at. Rushing or dragging.... etc.

@@mordecai8707 if you draw like a painter, you'll be imagining the "strokes" and direction of the different planes of an object (nose, arm, you name it). 4:50 I instantly understood what you meant here. I mean you were making no sense to me at all but when you said it's a method to invoke your intuition it all just clicked. Your tempo is the optimal pacing at which you can allow your intuition to guide your hand; too fast and your intuition can't keep up, too slow and your conscious thoughts start to interfere with your intuition, essentially you have discovered a way to artificially create what we typically call talent...
    Mind = Blown
There's another method for training your intuition, it's called n-back (a brain training game, one of the only ones proven to work) it's a game made to train your short term memory, however if you completely abandon the memorization and just click what 'feels right' instead, you'll be training your intuition instead of your memory. Theoretically it would help with this too, since it will allow your intuition better access to short and long term memory allowing it to be more accurate.

I've recenty started hearing about "intuition" in drawing. I have a very analytical mind, and when I started drawing about less than a year ago, I started with the fundamentals and grinded, while drawing just for fun here and there.
Last week, everything clicked. Art was never an analytical discipline for me. Sure, the theory is pretty linear and rule driven (like with most things), but what makes drawing so enjoyable to me was always the fact that I could draw a few lines and start seeing something within. I can't quite explain it, and no, I am definitely not gifted. I have practiced fundamentals and denied myself the exploration/experimentation part of drawing. I feel like as a beginner, this is the best thing that happened to me so far. I'm finally getting a "feeling" for the forms I draw, where to put details, contrast, how to use perspective (especially since I studied the basics). I'm becoming more free as an artist and it's an incredible feeling 😭

I noticed a little while ago that I had been drawing too fast when I was watching someone doing an art stream. I think for me this came from watching speedpaints for years and trying to emulate what I was seeing. Before I knew it, I was trying to draw at the speed that brush strokes were being made while I watched them, despite that these are played at double or triple the speed the original artist put these strokes down. I started to slow down and be decisive about my strokes. I knew where I wanted things to go and I slowed down enough to let my hand connect to my mind. Seemingly overnight I saw an improvement in my work as well as a more efficient workflow! Somehow I was putting down my strokes slower, but completing drawings faster. It's this strange "zen" where I'm actively thinking of what I'm drawing or painting, but also letting my intuition take the lead. I wish I could explain this better. It's like when you're playing a rhythm game and your simultaneously focused on the game but also not thinking very much because if you think too much you'll hesitate and then fail.

Bruh, I was so happy to see whose upload this was, cause I was just randomly checking out the video based on the title alone. I remember watching your stuff 14 years ago when I was starting. You were intermediate at the time but I still learned a lot from you since your approach was pragmatic and your advice transcended the level of your personal art. To see you drop a gem like this was nostalgic and I'm just glad we both stuck to drawing one way or another. Have a great day Sinix.

    This is interesting.
For some time I've been feeling like I've been progressively getting slower as a painter. For years I put more emphasis on preparation and on being methodical, the process.
Despite this, I don't think I actually improved that much. In fact I've been noticing I tend to overwork my art, to the point of reworking areas several times and getting frustrated with how...well, overworked it ends up. It looks detailed at first glance perhaps, but it's not better. Often I get mad at myself, decide to "just wing it" and it ends up better, with a lot less time spent.
I realized I used to rely on intuition a WHOLE LOT more in the past. I suspect this has something to do with me becoming a professional illustrator, I might feel pressured to overthink everything, because I'm worried about failure much more.
For years I've been watching artists who had nothing in common style-wise, but my brain would still punt them in the same category for some reason. Recently I identified this as "fearless".
I watched Zao Dao draw and it struck me how everything about her style flowed and how she laid down strokes, seemingly effortlessly.
And similarly - Greg Manchess in an old tutorial video - he's slower, more deliberate, but there is definitely a confident rhythm .
I think you helped me understand and put into words what I've been trying to figure out for a long time now.
I'll try to loosen up and rely on intuition more, not just when I become too frustrated.

this video has really shed a lot of light on the art making process. Fundamentals like form and perspective are important as a reality-check to make sure our works look convincing, but the bulk of the design process happens with intuitive shape design. Our brains are really friggin good at recognizing shapes and patterns and figuring out what looks good and what doesn't. So as artists it is really important to put that intuition into use when drawing/designing, and tempo is what allows our brain to keep up with what we draw. Thank you so much for this video!

I love this! It's so informative. We talk a bit about this in art school but it's way looser of a definition than tempo is, not sure why that is. I tend to get in my head about every line I'm making especially in the thumbnailing/sketching stages of drawing and it pretty much effects the entire drawing in a bad way afterwards. I'm super glad auto drawing is coming back because it's made the process much easier and flowier. Again, love the video !!

as a guy who loves art and does everything to try every artform, you said it well. when playing music you catch small subtle things like making an effort to make every string play good, almost emphasizing every note and yet be in a consistent tempo. even that feeling of playing a single note that anyone won't notice is also really satisfying. making it stick to the person who just experienced the art that you did, without them noticing, but maybe subconciously they noticed it. i love that!

the more i watch ur videos the more i realize art is just something you keep adding to and can take and apply something from literally anything & have it work as long as you find the right way to do it, it's like creating a system and you just toss whatever you want into it & it sort of builds up into this thing
idk how to explain it fully but my look on art just changed quite a bit right now, feels like some kind of program you build up or never ending structure where anything can be dumped into it

Extremely valuable advice that is very overlooked. One thing I've noticed is that digital interfaces can mess with these nuances without you even noticing, especially if you're not used to them or if you don't have enough familiarity with their trappings. This is one reason to choose whether you prefer a traditional or digital medium and a good reason to pay attention to things that may make you feel out of tune. Unfortunately, for some people even talking about the subject is enough to throw them off. Like telling people not to mess up when they swing a bat. Exercise can help you get where you want to be, but just as important is keeping yourself in the right state of mind or helping and keeping others there if that's where they want to be.

Aaaaah you have such a good point, I am sure this will help me so much in mu drawing 😍🥰 And I love the way you explain because it all comes from the inside but not from our minds who don't know what to draw on an empty paper, we need some guidance so once you make a line or two and let your inner knowing where to put the next (which doesn't have to be perfect but uou hve to start somewhere) and soon you'll find yourself drawing intuitively 😊

I’m glad I watched your video. And mid way through it I paused to let you know you’re not crazy for explaining these concepts in a genuine humane manner. Intuition and natural cadence is essential to creating art that flows and represents your individuality.
There are just some things that aren’t mechanical and easily measured - like tempo. That varies from person to person and what’s important is to bring out the hidden depths of your capabilities.
Intuitive practice leads to much greater strides forward. Repetitive practice leads to dragging, and anxious practice leads to working too fast. We actually know more than we think, we just need to tame our thirst for power and approach that wisdom with peace and patience.

I never would have thought someone could be bad at drawing a string of bubbles, but when I first tried it I was terrible. I tended to draw basically two sizes of bubble with about the same distances between them. Oddly enough, it started to click when I started drawing light on dark and filling in the bubbles. That helped me feel the “weight “ of them in the composition. I’ll definitely come back to these exercises a lot.

This video being one of the first tip in my beginner artist journey is extremely helpful I feel like I'm a bit cheating hahahah.
The difference is so significant by just understanding how to draw in a certain tempo that my intuition is able to flow.
I used to draw in a too slow tempo which causes my drawing became stiff and overworked bcs I think and analyze too much. This also happens to apply when I sing. The best result of my recordings or drawings is when I already have the basics like knowing lyrics, notes, a certain familiarity with pencil and shapes and when I tap into flow.
