    I've been using Tip and Rip hands for about 3 weeks now and I've been able to either steal the ball or tip it at least which leads to a partner stealing it. It is very helpful and has improved my Defense A LOT, thank you so much Shot Science :)

  • @ShotScience
    @ShotScience  11 років тому +1

    This is what makes the Jab Step so difficult to defend! You first have to shift your weight to the foot that has stepped to counter the jab step, the you will probably have to turn and run to try and re-establish your defensive position. It is a tough one!

  • @ShotScience
    @ShotScience  11 років тому +2

    The best position to effectively guard someone is about one arms length from their chest. Closer and it becomes difficult to have time to react to their drives. Play off too far and you leave them room to shoot over you.

    Wow! As I was playing at the court today, I was using the techniques in this video on defense, and I was either stealing the ball or I was stopping the ball! Thanks a lot and great videos!

    @Ron. I may not be the coach but I hope I can help. I had that problem also when I was younger. If you're consistently dribbling with your head up then your already set to create. Next tip that I can give you is that when your bringing up the ball the first the thing you should notice is who is in the low post. Then look for the perimeter wing players. If there are no players getting situated to receive the ball in the post, immediately give the ball to your wing men and create ball movement. As your playing off the ball, use that time to survey the floor and find a way to make a high percentage play for either your teammates or yourself, whether it be pick plays, dribbling penetration, finding an open shooter, or finding the big man.

    I used this yesterday during some pick up games and got two steals and four deflections of the ball. It's a "must practice" drill for defensive players. Thanks Shot Science.

    A speed ladder is one that is cloth and you lay it out on the floor and use different steps into and out of the ladder to work on footwork and speed.

  • @ShotScience
    @ShotScience  11 років тому

    It could if you are reaching for the ball. We are recommending that the rip hand is there and it makes the cross-over dribble one we can get a deflection with. It is not an aggressive ripping at the ball.

  • @ShotScience

    This is pretty much the stance used in todays basketball. Glad that it helps you out!

  • @ShotScience
    @ShotScience  11 років тому

    If you try it, you'll see that it's not as efficient, it's slower, and if you need to change directions, you need to use your lead foot anyway. Step-Drag is the age-old and proven method that seems to work better than any other approach. It takes a little bit of work to get down at first, but eventually you'll be very adept with it.

    these defensive videos have helped me so much in my local pickup games. i basically went from knowing nothing about defense to being a good defender despite having average speed and length. i'd love to see more defensive oriented videos and i'm eagerly awaiting the post defense video!

    MOAR DEFENCE! I soooooo much prefer defence than offence mainly, because its a nice feel when you shut them down in the post or even block them and collect the ball.

  • @ShotScience
    @ShotScience  11 років тому

    Step-Drag is the basis for all defensive footwork. The only thing we would add to this video to up the advancement of the footwork would be moving on the diagonal as you back up. It's a bit of a swing step to a 45 degree angle. Hopefully we'll be able to do more on this in the near future, but Step-Drag is the main footwork. You just need to work on the coordination and the foot-speed!

    I just want to say thank for all your videos. I'm from Jamaica, and basketball is not popular to say the least. When I came to America for college, I felt a little left out when my friends would play basketball, and I'd sit on the sidelines. With your videos and a lot of practice, I've become really good, especially at defense. So...Thanks!

  • @ShotScience
    @ShotScience  11 років тому

    Hands are an important part of defense and you need to learn how to use them by playing. Remember when reaching for the ball always use your han in an "Up-swing" from underneath. This results in fewer touch fouls than down swings.

  • @ShotScience

    Exactly the same way as if they are the same size. Just do not allow the bigger players to intimidate you!

    REALLY GOOD ADVICE. IN BASKETBALL I WAS ALWAYS MORE OF A DEFENSIVE GUY ALWAYS TAKING THE CHALLENGE TO DEFEND THE GO TO GUY OF THE OTHER TEAM (USUALLY A SMALL FORWARD OR SHOOTING GUARD). I MOSTLY USED POWER AND PHYSICAL DEFENSIVE TACTICS TO OVERWHELM MY OPPONENT ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY WANT TO USE THEIR BACKS TO MOVE CLOSER TO THE BASKET BUT NOW THAT I HAVE MORE KNOWLEDGE OF FUNDAMENTALS I'M DEFINITELY GOING TO BE USING THESE DEFENSIVE TACTICS INTO MY GAME

    We want the closeout to be aggressive until the last two or three steps which we like to see them use the chop step to break down and come under control to be ready for a dribble attack.

    This is a really good video on defense. I remember watching this last year! Since then, I have been a defensive pest, teaching others this method. The tip and rip method is beast, I use this and Kobe bryant's technique in blocking the ball handlers strong hand when he crosses over with the rip hand, then forcing him to go one way, with his dominant hand blocked.

    Cool! For me, it is nice to talk to some basketball folks who think outside the box. I remember the first time. I brought a speed ladder to practice-10 years ago-people thought I had lost my mind. I may be crazy, but I am not stupid. True story: When Damian Lillard showed up for his first session with me at Oakland High, we were on the track working on sprinting technique and he stopped in the middle of a drill and asked, "What's this got to do with basketball?"

    I didn't quite like the part about being square to the 3pt line. No doubt it's the basics, but it gives the offense a lot of options to attack BOTH left and right.

    Hey Coach! Unlike most players, I pride myself as being a defensive force than an offensive one. I am proud knowing that I've taught myself a lot of the moves you've displayed in these last two videos. I got a question though. When I'm defending a dribbler, I usually try to find chances to swipe the ball out with my hand. Some people call it dirty even though I never made contact, so I'd like to know if you can give me advice on this. I want to be a legitimate defender, not a dirty one. Thanks!

  • @practice11111
    @practice11111 3 роки тому

    Good video, But when you extend your arm up and out you are not in an optimal position to block the shot. Better if that hand is in front of your body in a shooting position. In that way you just have to raise your bent elbow up and to the middle to meet the ball that is being shot toward the defender or you can move the hand to the side to block any forward pass.

    thanks for the wonderful compliment... Sometimes i had a day where in my 3pt shots were made accurately. I want to develop also a faster legs prior to a defensive position to an offensive phase to drive all the way the basket.. ahm another thing, I would like to ask if there is a certain way or technique for blocking shots.. I've seen a lot of NBA players today go for a chase down block and that kept the crowd screaming for more of it..

    Shot science is the best.. all other videos on the net said they'll tell more about a certain drill when you purchased their dvds... My question would be how will I defend bigger guys than me? I'm 5ft 6inches tall and i constantly train myself at the gym or in home setting... My friends told me that I am a better defender and they would love that they're the one scoring a lot points... How can I overcome it?
