Korean Street Toast Recipe | Taste The World #11

- Опубліковано 21 сер 2024
- After the popularity of the recent Korean Fried Chicken, I had to give another recipe a try. This time the extremely popular Korean Street Toast, street food snack. People in Korea apparently grab these on side stalls for brunch or lunch or whenever! Golden buttery crunchy bread with a huge cabbage omelette (sounds weird but it's good!) inside stacked with gooey cheese and ham, mayo, ketchup and more! Just outstandingly delicious!

Barry you should cook for beard meets food it would be the finest you tube could offer 👍🏴
Gotta try Korean Corn Dogs now! Mozarella inside with rice flour and panko outside, rolled in sugar
This looks absolutely exquisite! Gorgeous! Right in my wheelhouse.
Barry I'm commenting here in hope you see it as most peanut butter is very bad for dogs, please make sure it's dog safe before giving it to them.
@@robertcross6102 First of all, Barry mentioned dog allowed peanut butter. One of the reasons that peanut butter is a problem is if given in high quantities, it can cause loose poops in a pup, but there is a reasonable amount that can be okay and also, if you work with someone who creates safe peanut butter for dogs it is fine. It is best if you listen to someone before you comment about something being bad. I get overzealous in protection of animals myself, but if I see something I generally watch it a couple of times to make sure I am right about what I think I heard or saw and then comment.
I don't put effort into my own food. Why am I addicted to this channel? I won't stop, I could whenever I want...but I don't want
Ok lol, maybe you get that fix from watching the vids?! Cheers
Damn son, that's a cross section even Babish would be proud of.
yeah i agree,,, it would be nice if they colab together i mean they both should work together thats gonna be swell
Barry Drinking Game...whenever Barry says "Oh my gosh" or "Naughty" take a shot.
Happy Coma
I can’t come to work today because I watched a Barry Marathon yesterday 😉🤣🥰
Oh wow. The amount of times i’ve seen these in Korean dramas in so many variations. This looked so freaking good!! 🤤🤤
Really? That's cool. They are apparently super popular!
@@mrbarrylewis Yeah and they are. I’m gonna have a crack at making this. Thank you.
@@mrbarrylewis quite common around universities. There was one near the entrance to my dorm! Would say more of a university food then for workers.
I, personally, would've made two sandwiches with only *one* layer of omelette each, to make it easier to bite/eat!
I was thinking this when I saw him make two layers of omelette.
When you dragged the ketchup lid over it XD i died a little inside.
Half shift at work & a Barry upload... its a good day🙌🥰
Sounds good! Thanks for the support :)
@@mrbarrylewis top supporter! Brought your gadgets as soon as they were released! Patiently waiting on more😅
My wife name is julieann. Plus we just visited this coffee shop today that sold Korean street toast and tried and then boom you post this video. A+ job sir!!
Interested if you've ever heard of Kimchi, it's a fermented pickled cabbage with Korean style spices, takes a while to make if you want it traditional but fresh Kimchi is lovely too, would love to see this as a video
Ah yeah i've tried that before, it's quite nice, not thought of doing a recipe on it though!
@@mrbarrylewis how about doing some European dishes like a Hungarian Goulash, Weinerschnitzel, some bratwurst hotdogs or even. Spanish Paella
@@CricketEngland The last time Barry made paella didn't end very well. No, wait, that was Jamie.
I love Kimchi and its very versatile 💜💚💜
@@rolfs2165 😭😭😭 oh my God.
I read somewhere that you can replant the root part of the spring onion or reg onion and grow onions again. You and the girls should try. A Barry tries with science. It might work/might not but could be fun. It could be a way to do zero waste.
I do that occasionally with leek and spring onions. The results aren't as impressive, at least with my method of just putting it in a glass of water. No room in my planters to put them in, might go better that way (or a garden, if I would have one).
@@ahandsomefridge The glass of water trick is great to get them a boost before planting out into soil. But they definately need to be planted out for best results. I always replant every bunch of spring onions i get in a dedicated long window planter, I usually get another harvest or two before they are spent and need replacing. Definately a money saver if you use spring onions regularly.
You're right and one day I'll give that a go :)
It also works with bakchoy and carrot tops (Warning, will not regrow carrots, only the tops)
@@vonniebunny8049 Curious, what use are carrot tops, apart from a kids science experiment? Do they have a culinary purpose?
Koreans have an amazing sandwich culture. Check out their egg drop toasts and their cafe sandwiches!
i remember when you changed your name you werent getting recommended and i didnt recognize your channel when i saw it again but i saw you and was so happy to have these videos back. You rock!
In Korea they put sugar on their corn dogs and cheese dogs as well. When you pull them out of the fryer roll them in sugar. I personally put ketchup on them as well. I will never eat a corndog without the sugar now. The sweet, crunchy crust the sugar makes is the best!
My 8 yo daughter and I just made this and had to come back to watch how to eat it!😜 it’s amazing!
I looked up a video of a Korean street toast vendor making this and Barry used twice the amount of omelet then they used. So it’s not that bad of a breakfast for you to have 😊👍🏻
I've watched a lot of Korean street food videos and the sound of the butter splattering, plus when you just went and added even more butter, I went, yep, this is gonna be legit I can feel it LOL
I tried this recipe several months ago and I loved it. I do put a lot more cabbage then you and also white and the green onion. Now, I don't make the sandwich, just the egg part. I would never have tried cabbage, onions and eggs, but it is delicious!
So like a really cabbage heavy omelette? That was quite filling itself for me, really fun recipe to try, so many variations apparently!
@@mrbarrylewis I use a bigger pan then you used so I end up dividing the egg into 4ths, so my egg isn't as thick. Yours looked so amazing. Thanks for all your videos!
Sometimes I don’t even watch the video. I just have his videos on for background sound because he’s so joyous.
that onion chopping bit was so pleasing omg
Looks amazing, I also love Chef John and his melodic voice
Brilliant, I'll have to give this one a go and go back to watch the Korean chicken one. I do want to say that your videos never fail to make me smile. Good work
Barry I would really love to see you try making mole poblano. It's a mexican dish that can have up to 50 ingredients, the sauce is a mix of spices, chili peppers and chocolate, it's sweet, salty, spicy and all kinds of amazing. It's served on top of turkey or chicken. I think you would totally nail it, and I'm really interested in your review of the flavor.
I used to make this with my (now ex) Korean boyfriend. We made the omelette with a higher egg to veg ratio, and without flipping, place the unfried bread onto the still soft omelette. Cook for a bit, then flip the whole thing to fry the bread and add the cooked fillings, and then close it like a book. Stops it falling apart quite so much when you eat it! Anyone who has spent a reasonable amount of time in Korea craves the cuisine for the rest of their lives (or at least I will).
For context, aparently the ketchup and sugar goes really well together. Especially in that sandwich. I've tried it before. Its realllly good.
Tteokbokki is also something you should try.. its epic. You can make it super cheesy too. This looks amazing btw. 😍
Butterscotch tart, I loved it at school and never been able to make it myself. I miss it!
Barry, I think you should do a live cook! That would be stonking!! Think everyone would like that too! 👍👌
Really glad you're showing everyone recipes around the world, I personally think it'd be better if you referenced a recipe by a chef who originated from that country because it would be way more authentic
Those ingredients for the omelet are actually for two sandwiches and the cayenne pepper I have not scene in any other recipes. This sandwich is really good.
Korean fried chicken is literally the best chicken we ever had!!! Amazing!
There is a german sandwich called Beaurox , basically meat and sauerkrout stuffed in a larger sized dinner roll and baked in the oven the farmers ate them on harvest day out in the field.😍It's so good 👍 You should try it , (germans from Russia cookbook)
I turned away for a second in my computer chair and turned back so hard when I heard the "Korea move" dad-joke that I almost gave myself whiplash.
Another brilliant recipe 🙌🏼
Thanks a bunch :)
I habe two recommendations, basically my favorite Korean dishes:
Japchae (based on sweet-potatoe noodles, might be a bit hard to get in normal stores but not the same without it)
Tteokboki (there are both spicy and mild version, the spicy is a very famous streetfood but the mild one is also really nice, for the Spicy one you can use your leftover gojujang)
Both of them are also quite interesting in texture with those noodles and the ricecakes, might be interesting to check out just because of that.
I need to utilize cabbage more, it is so tasty! Mixing it in with the eggs looks awesome.
This is the kind of thing I’d order with a Diet Coke to make it healthy
It has vegetables in the omelet, so it's a salad, so it's healthy!
@@tmf866 good point
Actually this sandwich isn't as unhealthy as it looks. To me two slices of bread for two people is low-carb. Not to mention there are a lot of veggies in it.
@@Jeffffrey0902 yeah but I’m not 2 people…
same, less guilt
Something tells me Barry wants a chocolate cake recipe for an easy excuse to eat some chocolate cake lol.
I've watched some Japanese cooking videos & it is common for them to sprinkle in a little sugar while whisking eggs before pouring into an omelet pan...
The one I was taught was to wilt the cabbage by throwing salt on it, let it sit a bit, and then squeezing out the water from the cabbage. I short-cut it by just using a bag of coleslaw salad.
Lol I just finished your last 4,3,2,1 video...and went to find something else to watch...and an alert for more Barry Lewis...👏yay!!! 😘Much love from Tennessee😘
Love that! Thanks :)
You are very welcome....and Thank you for making awesome videos!! ❤
I'd suggest leaving a portion of the cabbage and veggies as a loose shredded slaw instead of mixing it all up with the eggs. It will give a nice contrast of textures and the sensation of hot and cold. Also a kiwi blended up with mayo will add an unexpected spark. :)
Yay i love how barry's doing some korean dishes these days! Kr food is soooo good. What about some other asian cuisines?
Hey Barry I am from UK but live in Aus and before COVID worked several weeks a year in Korea and this is bang on. Also it’s 1.15am here my bladder woke me up saw the notification on my phone an there are only 12 comments so had to leave a comment hoping you read it mate luv the channel for years will knock this recipe up tomorrow 👍
No worries mate thanks a bunch glad you think it looks close to it!
Hello from South Korea! I’m so happy you are doing more Korean food
Koreans also love sugar bread. They add sugar to their garlic bread. It’s disgusting.
Isaac is such a good sandwich shop. Nowhere near as good as yours but it’s pretty decent
When the tomato ketchup lid gets dragged through all of the sauce 🤣
I love how Mrs Barry has mastered the look of 'Mr Barry Lewis, what has gotten into you?'
She's had practice.
Your full after just one bite, I was full just by looking at it😁
Hey Barry, quick life hack, if you don't have a julienne peeler, you can make shorter strands of carrot using a cheese grater. I've personally used the hack to add carrot to a Cole Slaw, and this recipe seems like a good application as well.
Been making this for a while now and have a nice little tip for the lazier of us. Instead of slicing veg, buy one of those DIY coleslaw kits with the carrot and cabbage pre-sliced and use some of that. Not only do you get extra crunch for less effort in your street toast but there's enough left over to make some slaw for later 😁
Hi. Idea for your tastes of the world Playlist... South Africa has a great bread style bowl (half a loaf insides pulled out) filled with many variations of meat stew, curry and/or veggies called bunny chow. There is also a variation on this called a Kota. Basically a quarter of a loaf of bread with the insides pulled out and then other food piled into the smaller bread bowl. 🍞
Next you should try to make ja ja mein. It is delicious Chinese food
OK, got a good laugh out of the last pun, didn't see it coming. I don't like eggs, but I do like French toast so I might actually like this.
MR LEWIS, I totally blame you for this ----- every time someone says the word seal I hear your voice in my head along with a visual of your face 'singing' 🤣
Looks soooo delish.
A spoonful of gochujang that you’ve got a massive tub of would set that sarnie off so well, it’s AMAZING with melted cheese.
now thats a sandwich .. nice job
Cheers, was rather epic indeedy!
Day one of asking berry to collab with emmymadeinjapan
I love Emmy...
Barry, I'm the same as you concerning certain food.I used to hate cooked carrots and tomatoes, but love them raw.
Love when Barry compliments himself
Never tapped on a notification so fast
awesome
his dogs stole the show tbh
I'm interested in the fact that it's called "toast". I think it probably would be in most places. However, in the US it would probably be called "a grilled cheese sandwich with ham and a vegetable omlet," ignoring the sauces in the name. If you were to describe it to me without instructions I'd probably cook the omlet and maybe the ham, assemble the sandwich (with raw bread and cheese), and cook it until the bread is golden - which would probably melt the cheese in the process. Maybe putting cheese in between layers to cement it together.
I feel like you should collab with the guys from Korean Englishman/Jolly and their neverending quest to bring Korean toast to the English masses.
Looks so Good
Anybody else from Sweden or any other northern country who thought "oh god! what is that?!" when he showed the "cheese gadget". Get a osthyvel instead😂
Love tour videos ^^
PSA Barry: The definition of stench, is a very strong and unpleasant smell hahah. So when you're talking about a nice smell, you should use the word smell not stench hahah
Tbh he also calls steam “smoke”, so…
I think aroma or fragrance would probably be better words instead of stench. Stench makes me think it smells bad.
I tried the Korean fries chicken and it was sooooooooooo good! I'm gonna make that again!
heh i keep thinking you & the channel "Jolly" should do something together
That would be jolly
@@mrbarrylewis maybe a Korean pizza or something lol
That would be amazing.
Barry, you have to make Lord Woolton pie. You have to defend this British ration recipe 😁
It has a horrible reputation yet I made it and actually loved it!
That looks delicious
Barry you should make the Nashville-style chicken, I think you will enjoy it.
Heyyyy, not food related comment, but your comment on that Kanye West thing made my Taylor Swift heart go🥺🥺 Do you hear her music??
Am I the only one who sees these toasts everywhere? Makes me so hungry! 😱😂😂😍
I'd looked away for a second but when I heard Barry say "Keep... Your eye on it" I immediately knew what he was going to do 😂
I discovered this recipe by watching too many Korean street food videos here on UA-cam. I make mine by simply taking a bag of coleslaw mix (the plain dry stuff) then add in some green onion and ginger paste and lil soy then about 2-3 eggs. I try to make the patties kind of thick and let them brown then flip.
This is my own thing but I'm sure it has been done before because it's so simple.
I like my onions cut long and thin. I like my peppers smaller than the onions as onions decrease in size a lot when cooked and peppers can't be cut thinner easily. For seasoning I tend to use spices but corriander and thyme wouldn't hurt this dish in moderation. Hot chilli seasoning and paprika would do well plus some onion salt. You can also use chilli oil. I like the feta and chicken to look fancy so a nice sprinkling of seasoning does well for it. The natural tastes from the food with no seasoning is still quite nice on its own though. You may want to arrange the food to seperate the fillets to maximise surface area that the onions and cheese add to the flavor of the chicken with or do whole chicken breasts for juicier chicken.
Longish onion slices on top of feta cheese on top of chicken fillets on top of onion slices and chopped garlic surrounded by slightly thinner peppers and whole asparagus. Add seasoning in between onions and feta or even underneath the chicken as well as on top of the feta. Make sure there is some olive oil at the bottom. It's a spicy dish so adding a couple chilli peppers in between the chicken and the feta cheese slices wouldn't hurt. Stick in the oven for around 25 minutes at 180° C fan assisted. Maybe even on the grill setting to really cook the feta cheese. This is just a general guide, I usually cook it until it looks good and don't really remember the exact settings I use. Very slight golden brown feta cheese, you want a little bit of rigidity to that cheese.
Hope you like it 😅
One foreign street food recipe I'd like to see you try is Espumillas, which is Spanish for foam and is from Ecuador. It's a meringue that's mixed with fruit puree, traditionally guava fruit, but I'd like to see you try several different fruits. I recently made one with strawberries that didn't turn out quite right, but it still tasted good!
Me: Oh, I've had the Food wishes Korean street toast a few times and love it, wonder how Barry did it.
Barry: So, I got this recipe from All Recipes, fellow called Chef John...
Awesome barry, thats amazing. I think I would just use one half of the omlette and instead of ketchup use some hot sriracha sauce 😋
Barry how about doing some European dishes like a Hungarian Goulash, Weinerschnitzel, some bratwurst hotdogs or even. Spanish Paella
bierocks!
Such a naughty sandwich, I'm sure it would feed a family! Wouldn't using four slices of bread and not double stacking the omlette would make it more mouth width friendly?
This looks awesome and it's making me hungry
Korean Seafood Pancakes... they are to DIE for!
Absolutely, one sandwich feeds 4 people ! I'm full just looking at it... 😂
Looks amazing, can't beat tiger bread.
Everything's better when it's cooked in a bit 'o butter... :P
try kraft singles for next time. Usually stores/stalls use processed one for cost saving
You should try nasi tumpeng from indonesia if you fancy a challenge, tumeric coconut rice with many special side dishes including fried chicken, spiced eggs, spicy potatoes and many more 😁
glad to you know about it😆😆😆 고마워요😆😆❤
Next, you should try making a seafood pajeon, which is a pancake made with potato flour, stuffed full of clams, oysters, octopus, squid, shrimp/prawns, baby scallops, sea snails, basically whatever quick-cooking seafood you can get your hands on. I recommend starting with Maangchi's recipe here on UA-cam to get a feel for it, then do further research to see what sounds best to you.
My husband is korean and he has made this for me several times and it's soooooo good but you need to make homemade kiwi sauce to make it the real deal!
Recipe pls?
@@darkhaven87 sorry but I'm not sure where he got the recipe as it was in korean and I myself unfortunately don't speak much korean 😅 there are definitely recipes online if you looks for korean street toast kiwi sauce
@@CartB0X 😊thanks! I always see some kind of sauce being used. Had no idea it was kiwi sauce. Sounds so interesting!
@@darkhaven87 yes it is kiwi sauce. Basicly kiwi, onion and maYinaise blitzed
Thunk may have some honey in it
Just found this channel. So funny that as an American the word"stonking" doesn't sound like what it means:) haha
Well Paula Deen may slap me silly for saying this but dude, that’s waaaaaay too much butter in this recipe
@Paperwing 😂😂😂
This is great Barry, thanks. I'm going to cook it for my mum as a treat.
Awesome, deffo one to share!
I watch a couple different Korean channels and I've noticed that they are pretty on a sweet & spicy type of pallet, more red chili powder and honey
Pro tip- to make your omelette life easier, buy a package of coleslaw mix to save time prepping the veggies. 👊
It looks so amazingly delicious! :)
Loved the video but loved the pugs eating peanut butter best.
This really looks good. I wonder if I wouldn't make two sandwiches with that big an omelet, though? I think the idea of adding a little sugar is to offset the spiciness.
I really like those "Taste The World" videos. Please keep them coming.
I think it would be cool to do one recipe from all 50 states in th USA. I know you have been here but it would be interesting to see your take.
