Lived in Korea for over five years as an English teacher. These were many of my breakfasts (minus the sauce). This looks very authentic to what I have seen and ate. Also, for some reason Koreans put sugar on everything, even garlic bread, garlic bread. Friends i knew would recommend Italian places simply with, "They don't put sugar on their garlic bread."
@@CodyCha Not exactly. The flour to sugar ratio is 10:1. There's more in there than just those 2 ingredients. And that was in Ireland. In America, most of their bread has 3 grams sugar per 6 inch. That's 12 calories. But they have to list it because they added it. Just because they added it, doesn't mean you're going to eat it. A small amount of sugar is necessary to feed the yeast, otherwise it takes a long damn time to make bread. Big companies don't just make a recipe and start selling it. They have groups of people from every area they sell in taste testing. Apparently in Ireland they like their sandwich bread sweeter than we do. Tried this one recently, just because it looked so unusual yet accessible. It’s scrumptious, and my husband loved it too, so it may become a regular. Thank you! 👍🏻
Having made this many times a week since- a few tips: if your mixture has more egg to veggies ratio- use a smaller pan to keep shape- keep very low heat as you cook the egg mixture and constantly kinda push holes into it so the raw egg parts flow downward and cook- or if you’re not able to babysit it and doing other things: low heat and a lid goes a long way. You can sub the sugar for jam- I like strawberry sometimes. Okanamoyaki sauce is a good substitute for ketchup sometimes. As well as it’s nice to sometimes fry a few slices of bacon or spam or deli ham or even pat out a sandwich size of sausage. Sliced peppers are good in the mixture as well as sometimes instead of salt, a little soy sauce & mirin combo. Yummy 😋 And I always toast my bread a little more than I would normally because it can get soggy.
I kept asking myself if there would be mayonnaise, I was waiting for it and when it finally was applied I very silently whispered: Yessss! Definitely will try this.
Just tried this today and it tastes fantastic!! You’re right, the dab of sugars work wonders! Used sliced sausages since i did’t have ham, but ham still work better as it’s thin and not as bulky. Thanks for the lovely recipe!
I did this and it was great! But I'm going to do it again with the toast in the toaster, cause I like more crunch to my bread on a sandwich like this. I think I'll be trying this with some bacon next time as well. And I will always be putting cabbage and carrots in every omelete from now on. Thanks for posting!

Probably because she doesn't want you to get fat as hell. This thing has like 1500 calories, all from fat and carbs. Korea was relatively a poor country until the 90s so we sought out calorie dense food as much as possible at the lowest cost possible. This was one of the result as was the instant ramen and other flour based foods. Now that Korea is one of the richest countries in the world, food like this is actually contributing to an obesity problem. Enjoy it friend, but only like once a month. LOL.
My husband and I lived in Korea as civilians around 25 years ago. We were shocked by how much sugar was in used in dishes where we’d never expect it. Tasted great to our sweet teeth, but hell on the blood sugar! I’m making a bacon kimchi dish for him tomorrow. I’ve never been a big fan of kimchi, but he fell in love with this dish in Virginia, of all places, and it’s his birthday request, so I’ll do my best. Thank you for posting.

And i just used what i found in the almost empty fridge: ham, tomatoe slices, sour pickle slices, a fried egg and a slice of melted cheese. Its always good to have some Toast-bread in the house! ❤🍞
Brought back culinary school vibes with julienning the carrots. I remember doing it over and over. Havent done it since then.
That sandwich actually looks really good.
I just made this. Used strawberry preserves instead of sugar. It was really good! Crunchy, with a lot of different flavors going on. I would make it again! Thank you Chef John!
I just made this because of this video. Thanks to Chef John for ruining any other breakfast sandwich for me! :D
Chef John: Your kicthen skills and presentation are a joy to watch . Truly.
"And there is going to be less chance of burning it because I'm playing with it so much" I had the exact opposite experience...
well, note that Chef John plays with his for only a few minutes, instead of hours on end, right?
@@silpheedTandy And he does it gently too
@@silpheedTandy with butter
For a healthier option I think I would use less butter & mayo & sauce & drop the sugar since there is some in ketchup anyway.
@@cizia69 butter sure does contribute to the sensual pleasures of life, doesn't it?
As a Korean, I remember eating this almost everyday for breakfast or lunch because my mom made them and I still love eating it to this day. It's definitely soul food for Koreans. I would say it's much better to use Japanese milk bread instead of American white bread. Trust me, the difference is phenomenal.
And where would I find such a bread? Don't remember seeing it in my local supermarket.

I’m trying this for sure need something different to try during Pandemic
The sugar adds more depth of flavor to the sandwich. I made it today and it was delicious.
I love this channel. America has its problems but one good thing we have is the freedom to attain delish ingredients and create or enjoy tasty dishes from all the over the world. Cheers!
Glad your expense account always guarantees a good video spiced with wit and humor. I don’t have an expense account anymore so I’ll just have to break the budget and whip up this yummy treat!

세상에.. I was thinking the same
Hm, yes, well personally, I think * KOREAN SOUNDS *
The way you explain and narrate.... I wanna make this for breakfast tomorrow!!! Thank you for the recipe 🙏
I recently made this sandwich and it was super delicious and very easy to prepare. Thank you!
YOUR VOICE OVERS ARE SO FUNNY AND UNIQUE AND WELL WRITTEN FOR EACH VIDEO OMG I LOVE THIS CHANNEL
I know he’s so lovable.
Gosh, that looks absolutely delicious. Julienning carrots is something I'm still not quite used to, but I definitely want to try this out ASAP! I'd imagine this would be brilliant with some thick slices of homemade milk bread.
Just made this with slices of milk bread I’ve made, can confirm it’s delicious!
I loved having this when I was stationed in Korea at Osan Air Base, usually after a few to many OB beers or Soju in downtown Songtan village...good times!!
Suggest it to Denny's? I would order that
@@judyjohnson9610 Not even in the same zip code!! WHAT??!!
@@BOHICA_69 for us poor people who can't afford to travel!
I just made this for lunch after watching this video. Damn Korea, i knew your bbq and bulgogi was good but this was a surprise.
Been watching your channel for a while now and this was the first recipe I've actually tried. End result delicious! An half was a perfect breakfast.
Yummy 😋
And I always toast my bread a little more than I would normally because it can get soggy.
love your takes on this, will try.
"we just ate a whole serving of vegetables without noticing" -- coated in sugar, ham, cheese, mayo and ketchup. haha :)
better than no veggies. sneak it in like v8
Not to mention a total of 3 tablespoons of butter!
noice
"A spoon full of sugar helps the vegetables go down..."
The nutritional facts are on allrecipes. 1 sandwich = 900+ calories and over 100% of your daily fat, cholesterol and sodium.
Worth.
As a Korean i verify and approve this recipe!
I kept asking myself if there would be mayonnaise, I was waiting for it and when it finally was applied I very silently whispered: Yessss!
Definitely will try this.
Amazing! I seem to have concocted this sandwich many times while intoxicated & never realised it was a Korean street toastie.
my parents used to add strawberry jam in mine when I was growing up!
That sounds really good!
Yes, sounds delicious. I would leave out the sugar and ketchup if using jam though.
I actually think I would prefer that to the sugar.
My mom would add jam and bacon lol. It was sooo goood!
Let’s see if you would let them do the same to you now😄🤔
On the " I have to try this" score from 1 to 10 this is 27
I agree do a whole street food series
Just tried this today and it tastes fantastic!! You’re right, the dab of sugars work wonders! Used sliced sausages since i did’t have ham, but ham still work better as it’s thin and not as bulky. Thanks for the lovely recipe!
I did this and it was great! But I'm going to do it again with the toast in the toaster, cause I like more crunch to my bread on a sandwich like this. I think I'll be trying this with some bacon next time as well. And I will always be putting cabbage and carrots in every omelete from now on. Thanks for posting!
Do not mess this up by using any bread that has any nutritional value... 😂
This is the best comment!. That is all.
I can deconfirm, whole wheat bread works fine.
chef John low key slaps with his subtle jokes. He's been doing this for years, and thats why I subscribed lol. Hes awesome and has taught me so many new recipes.
You could make pan de mie, which is delicious square everyday French white bread, and no one needs to know it's nutritious unless you tell them.
@@MarySanchez-qk3hp is it a pun?
Be honest here, did you stay up late watching endless Korean street toast videos on youtube? If not, you should as they are the most relaxing thing to watch at 2am when you have insomnia.
I love making this! As a variation, Chef John, try BBQ sauce instead of the mayo/ketchup.
Yea I was gonna make this without the mayo and ketchup. Bbq sauce sounds much better
or okonomiyaki sauce!
@@bobf5360 this guy knows his shit
Do you think grated zucchini would work? I can’t cabbage.
@@lynnstlaurent6789 It's worth a try. Zucchini has a lot of water in it, though. You'd need to squeeze most of the water out of it before you cook it.
Yeeiiih!!! So happy you made a Korean street food dish! Please make more Korean food!
Tried it, loved it, did again the next day. Thanks Chef John!
Finally tried this recipe today and my goodness, what a game changer. I could happily eat this every single day. Delicious and so easy to follow! Thank you Chef John. :)
LOL as soon as I went "it ain't legit without a proper sprinkle of sugar", chef John said to top it up with some white sugar 👍
I now need to ask my Korean wife of 23+ years why we have never had this. She has some ‘splaining to do.
😅😅😅
Ahahaha. Do you have children? I have memories eating this as a child only so I think it’s something mothers make for their children moreso than adults haha. (Kinda like Mac and cheese or grilled cheese sandwiches?) She made it for lunches when I was on elementary school a lot but once I went into middle school, I never got these unless I asked for it.
Or you could be inspired by the recipe and make it for lunch for the two of you....peas and lovage
🤣
Probably because she doesn't want you to get fat as hell. This thing has like 1500 calories, all from fat and carbs. Korea was relatively a poor country until the 90s so we sought out calorie dense food as much as possible at the lowest cost possible. This was one of the result as was the instant ramen and other flour based foods. Now that Korea is one of the richest countries in the world, food like this is actually contributing to an obesity problem. Enjoy it friend, but only like once a month. LOL.
We had it tonight for supper... ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!! VERY IMPRESSED! THANK YOU!
I love how authoritatively Chef John slips that spatula underneath
You cannot show any fear before a spatula. It can sense fear.
Food senses fear is a famous Chef John quote!! 👏🏼
"Never let the food win"
It’s basically a ham grilled cheese with coleslaw. Delicious.
Liz Lemon says: "Put potato chips on a sandwich!". I say put ALL side dishes on a sandwich!
Well the egg makes it far different
Jeff F It’s like a breakfast sandwich with coleslaw.
It's far more like an omelet than coleslaw lol.
Why, yes, I am about to run into my kitchen and make this immediately!
😀😀
Just do it as well for the first time!
IT IS AWESOME
I'm just going to come right out and say it. You have the BEST food channel on UA-cam.
I know that I am very late to the conversation, but thanks for another "Wow!" recipe. I was skeptical about the very judicious use of cold cuts, and generous use of sugar, but I stayed the course and it paid off! Thank you.
대학다닐때 학생식당에서 해주던 그 맛일듯 ㅎㅎ맨날 야채하고 머스타드 많이 달라고 했는데
Every time I go to Korea , this is absolutely a must.
Instead of sugar, mayo and ketchup use sweet & sour sauce of choice. Delicious!
