Notice in the episode that when Askeladd accepted the duel he swore on the name of Odin, but when he swore to let Thorfinn live he swore on the name of Artorious his ancestor.
@@Skaffabranca Spoilers: That's not the significance of why he said that. It's because being a Danish viking swearing upon Odin is his false life. But being the descendant of the Welsh King Artorius is his true life.
To answer Carlies question at the end: Thors could have killed Askeladd and every single men of him on the boat with ease (strenghtwise, he surely didn't want to), but then the soldiers on top of the cliff would have killed all of Thors people with the arrows I suppose. So Thors had no chance but to bluff Askeladd into surrendering. When that didn't work out, he chose to sacrifice himself and hope that Askeladd had enough honor left to let Thorfinn and the others live. I'm not sure if he would have given up his ideals (not killing etc.) if he had the chance to protect his men. Probably. But then again, he didn't even have to make this decision, since they were hopelessly trapped anyway.
Thors knew that Askeladd is only after his head when Thors noticed that they know him as the Troll of Jom assuming it was Floki and Askeladd confirmed it. Thors made a win-win solution for them all. If Jomvikings saw his head, Floki wouldn't bother going back to the village. Askeladd knows that Thors won't kill him as he sees Thors just bruising his men and only aims to disarm him which confirms Floki's statement that he is no longer the kind of warrior that everyone knows.
Thors WAS DONE the moment the archers appeared. No way in hell they would let him go with or without Askeladd directions (I mean Askeladd should have said a very good reason for not killing him for the money... and honestly he had zero reasons. Thats why I think he offered Thors to join them. It was the only way to get him out of there alive)
So Carli was talking about Askeladd's question at 20:58. And I just want to point out that the show has many little cases of "show-no-tell" scenes. You see the disappointment on his face and thoughts "like what a shame" or similar things through the look down and facial expression in this shot. And even if the show would be able to share what's going on in his mind, it doesn't because they want you to think about it.

Thors knew that killing Askeladd wasnt the solution. Only way he could solve it was through an agreement with Askeladd to let his people go. Had he killed Askeladd, the arhcers or the "pirates" would have killed his people or sold them as slaves anyway.
plus without Thors' head Floki would have raided the village I assume. Thors said this to Leif. So yea, Thors figured this out, his death was the only way to save his people :(
That's not why he didn't kill Askeladd. He didn't kill anyone because he genuinely believes that it is wrong, and that it is not okay to kill someone even to protect someone else. What is so hard to get about that notion to people
That scene with Askelad is amazing because he seems to be forced to be scummy on that situation. He seemed sincere when asking Thors to be their leader, further shown by his respect for him. But Bjorn noticed it and couldn't accept it, so he took thorffin as hostage forcing Askelad to improvise and maintain his position. And his face when seein that Thors was happy to give up his life for his son, and his strengh in making sure he stays true to the duel rules, even while dying. This sets the tone a bit about Askelad as a characters.

Thors threw his sword at the end because he knew there was no way they would all survive if Thors survived. Floki would still find a way to kill him, and in the process, his family. So it was time for him to pay his debts and die, letting his family survive and live peacefully. I think Askeladd really meant it for a second when he asked Thors if he wanted to be their leader, I think he was overwhelmed by Thor's actions. Then he snapped out of it and called it a joke.
23:30 It may seem safer but it wasn't, if Thors had tried to kill them he would still have died, Askeladd had control of the situation from the beginning, from the beginning he was able to kill Thors with the archers, he just "played" with him because he was curious what kind of person did he have to kill, in the end it was the best thanks to the respect he gained for Thors he forgave the rest of the people, in another situation he would have killed them or sold them as slaves
That's a nice observation, Ange! Not a spoiler, but Thorfinn's journey is one of the most amazing character growth in anime history. Kid's gone through a lot with just that scene wherein he's hugging his dying father.
Yep, Askeladd definitely respects Thors for sure. In fact, he actually respects Thors more than anyone there, with the possible exception of Leif. Even as Thorfinn grows and gets older, the fact continues to remain that Askeladd continues to respect the hell out of Thors - especially as he meets more and more people that just aren't him.
i love how this anime is actually realistic overall. but then some notable character have like superhero like powers, to remind us that this is an anime, not a history show lol
The best part about this episode is when askeladd asks thors to be their leader, its such a strange thing to say, but as you learn more about askeladd you realise he was dead serious
Y'all are overly harsh on Askeladd. He was being serious when asking Thors to be their leader - you can tell by the way he quickly tries to cover it up as a joke afterwards. It's these subtle things in all the characters that make the show so much better, so it's be better to reserve judgement of any of the characters. He also shows himself to be somewhat honourable in the end as well. He had no choice but to pull the dirty trick, since he couldn't return empty handed, but he still spared the crew according to Thors' request. K this is actually mostly Carlie, Ange has actually made some great insights in the discussion. I don't really blame Carlie though, he did just kill her husbando so... But no, he's a little more complex than a character who only cares about his job.
i love how askeladd could've taken thorfinn and everyone else and sold them as slaves after ending thors. he would've made way more money doing that. but, he decided to honor thors' request to let the others go...
Im glad you guys recognized askeladd was just doing what he had to do and hes not necessarily "evil" but of course from thorfinns pov hes damn near the devil
Rip Thors! I cried watchings this still even now, the death of a true warrior, the only one who doesn't fight to kill, only to protect, and to avoid violence only as a last resort.
offering a dual and hope Askelad take it somewhat respectfully is the only way Thor keeps everyone alive, they are under arrows range and will kill all if Thor poses way too much of a threat to the pirates. his gamble paid off, costing his life but saved everyone elses
Askeladd was serious about Thors being the leader, if he lose he knows his crews would lose respect. But he acknowledged Thors was the winner and his expression when Bjorn grabbed Thorfinn, he wasn't happy
And so it begins! Askeladd (pronounced aski-lad, I think the japanese accent just sounds like ash-eh-lad) is probably one of the best written characters in general IMO. Also when Floki says Thors is not a warrior anymore, he more so means that Thors has lost his honour as a warrior by deserting the vikings way back then. side notes: - As the show goes on it becomes more apparent that when Askeladd asked Thors to lead them he was, in fact, not kidding. - When Thors says he could tell Askeladd was the leader by his scent he meant metaphorically, like how someone can "smell of fear", or when someone can "sniff out the truth". Thors has met generals of armies before - they have a different aura. - One of the underlying themes in the shows (imo) is the idea of morality/honor when it comes to reality/naivity. How faithful are you to your ideals? Are they worth the cost? Do these ideals make you a better person? Would you prefer an honorable means that cannot take you to the ends, or dishonorable means to complete an honorable goal?
Not sure if that is the pronunciation, searching a bit I hear Ask-eh-lad, imo their pronunciation is correct. Also, I tried translation Ash to Danish and Norwegian, which is Aske (Ask-eh).
that not how its pronounced. its Ass-kel-ath its a welsh name 'Dd' is pronounced very similar to 'Th' but not quite, the dub gets it wrong to so no hard feelings lol but everything else i agree:) also i wanted to add that 'Dd' is actually 1 letter in the welsh alphabet, weird right? XD

There quite a few of the characters that are base on the real people in this season. Leif is the most well known in history but Thorfinn is also based on a real person.
He could smell that he was the leader because the leader always lives in better conditions. Better groomed etc. Better lodging and meals. So it's faint but he could smell his position.
About the supernatural aspects: the story is loosely based on the icelandic sagas, which were vocal retellings of historical events that were often embellished and exaggerated. That's why some characters are way too strong and capable of insane feats.
If you are still wondering why Thors didn't kill them all, it's to protect all the villagers as well and maintaining his principles of a true warrior. Floki will no longer bother going back to their village if they saw his head. It's a win-win solution for all of them.
I heard somewhere that tiger's legs are so powerful they can die standing up. With this, the interpretation of Thors' death is that even in death, he's still a beast.
On Carlie's question of whether or not it would have been safer for everyone else for Thors to kill Askeladd: Thors and Askeladd have a moment of communication in this episode where it becomes clear that this is a hit job and that Thors' death is basically the only outcome that Askeladd is seeking. Even if Askeladd is killed the arrows could still rain down on Thors, or another trick could be laid. If Thors gets out of there alive Floki would presumably still want him dead, causing more danger to his loved ones. Thors trusts Leif and his intentions are that, by his sacrifice, his child, the young men on the boat, and by extension his village, will therefore be safe. (Thorfinn stowing away on Askeladd's boat is, ofc, not something Thors could have foreseen). It was a tactical decision alongside a moral one.

Hey are you using the Netflix subtitles? There was a line in episode 1 that made me think you were but you haven’t left any of the other identifying lines in a video so I can’t tell. If you are the Netflix subtitles change the meaning of lines and sometimes say literally the opposite of what the character actually said so I’d switch to the Amazon prime subtitles if you are using Netflix.
as oskar schindler said "power is when we have every justification to kill but we don't". still can't believe how thors was able to resist submission to the temper of the situation but stayed true to this ideals and displayed an example in front of the vikings and most importantly in front of his son how a true warrior should act, that a true warrior doesn't need a sword, and that no one is YOUR enemy, untill YOU force them to become so. a lesson that thorfinn hopefully will learn by the end.
Atleast for swedish you can literally switch out j and y and you have the correct sounds. Most names of this is danish and norweigan so I think some names is easier if you pronounce it islandic.
I'm Japanese and I know very little English. I have a genuine question. A lot of reactors pronounce the "k" in "Askeladd", why do you not realize they don't pronounce the "k" like "know" or "knight"?

Maybe it's important for the future story😊
subbed lets go vinland saga baby
The end of the prologue
damn wanted to see you guys react to the most iconic line of the series :(
WHAT A SICK COVER 👍👍👍👍
Death is a development block too
Askeladd will grow on Carlie, but god thors is such a true warrior
Thors was practically the Ned Stark of this show, except he died sooner.
That hit hard ngl
0:45 lord Carlie same.
Finally able to subscribe to you guys! My favorite reactors by faaarrrr! Looking forward to these reactions!
And if you're looking for a slice of life, maybe look at Given, an 11 episode (and a movie) show about a kid trying to learn guitar. It's one they will make Carlie cry a bunch lol
oh Askladd, going to be interesting how Carlie and Ange option on him changes
Ange might come around easily I'm more interested to see Carlie on the famous askeladd moments
To this day, I wonder if Askeladd was truly just joking when he asked that. 10:24
he wasn't
And there goes our good boy Ned Stark 😔
This is so funny because I just started watching GoT and I was thinking that Ned Stark really resembles Thors lol I'm still in the early episodes but I'm very much expecting Ned to meet the same fate as Thors tbh
@@Mary-ld7ct Just keep in mind who the actor is.... 😅
Just curious but are u two gonna react to the new aot trailer🤭
Berserker shrooms were a real thing btw.
The animation is the same as AOT before MAPAA toke over at part 4
Sempre brincadeira e fazendo piadinhas...
Man you're killing this op...
as oskar schindler said "power is when we have every justification to kill but we don't". still can't believe how thors was able to resist submission to the temper of the situation but stayed true to this ideals and displayed an example in front of the vikings and most importantly in front of his son how a true warrior should act, that a true warrior doesn't need a sword, and that no one is YOUR enemy, untill YOU force them to become so. a lesson that thorfinn hopefully will learn by the end.
Atleast for swedish you can literally switch out j and y and you have the correct sounds. Most names of this is danish and norweigan so I think some names is easier if you pronounce it islandic.
"I'm ready for Askeladd to not be in the show anymore." 😅
There's something Thors see of being a true warrior and that's Thorfinn can't see yet. It's actually sad.
I'm Japanese and I know very little English.
I have a genuine question.
A lot of reactors pronounce the "k" in "Askeladd", why do you not realize they don't pronounce the "k" like "know" or "knight"?
"kn" always has the k as silent. The "Ask" in Askeladd resembles the English word ask which is why many default to that pronunciation
@@Ash_Wen-li I see! I learned a lot. thank you!
welcome to painland saga
This series really hits different in the English dub ngl. I wish you had reacted to that one instead. It matches well with the theme :(
