It can be werid when it's all in Japanese, but the only English word Thorfin knows is "run" because that's what all the people yell when they invade. Sad but a great detail.

Why Askeladd did that neck cut thing with his hand was him comically saying to Thorfinn "Hey do this mission and i'll reward you with a duel."

  • @dragsob
    @dragsob 3 роки тому +247

You ask multiple times why he fights with them, it's part of a deal he made with Askeladd. Remember Thorfinn has to be the one who kills Askeladd in a duel.
Askeladd has the right to say no to duels, so to "make use" of the kid he sends him on missions with a duel as a reward.
This is also why Thorfinn saves Askeladd at one point, so he can kill him later.

Oh! and i noticed you said you weren't at all familiar with norse history and such. A main thing to know about Norse history is, that it is a VERY honorbound societ so Thorfinn is very set on vengance for his Father.
An interresting thing Danish comedians have pointed out is even though we nordic hold a sense of pride over the Vikings, they were a past equevalent of terrorists, with the Raping and the raiding.
But it is also said that, since all written history about the Vikings were written by English scribes. The Vikings may very well have been painted in a worse light. There is one passage about how Vikings were devilious tempters because they bathed once a week and would seduce all the english women, so yeah.

Its important to remember, that this was always the plan. Thorfinn literally was on track to be a viking just like the men in this warband. Thats why he was playing war as a kid, it wasnt a game. Thats viking culture, viking training. "According to the oldest Scandinavian law books, a boy was legally considered an adult when he was 12 and able to participate in war so long as he could pass the lenient requirements for becoming a Viking warrior. "

    • @bexclue3007

Kids will be kids and games are games. Chess is also a war game. Doesn't mean chess players would actually enjoy going to war.
And look at kids today: every 5 year old kid wants to become either a cop or a fire fighter and likes to play as cowboy or spy and likes playing with toy guns. But then they grow up.
The only person in that settlement in Iceland who knew what the viking life was really like abandoned it because he learned how awful and horrible it was. And that's despite the fact that Thors was at least an actual proper Viking and not pirate scum like Askeladd.
      There is a distinction.
Even when the kids were "playing Viking" they were fighting each other with weapons. As "proud warriors" on the battlefield.
They weren't playing "let's butcher unarmed, peaceful villagers!".
And it was never "the plan" for Thorfinn to abandon his mother, abandon his sister, ignore his father's wishes and words for the sake of choosing to hang out with pirates who pillage, rape and murder villages for fun and profit from the age of 6.
How does anyone watch this unfold and think to themselves "this is fine :)" It's deranged and so ironic, considering this is the prologue to the story and what the story is actually about
Your Quote literally changes nothing about the actual reality of the situation. It's like quoting how slaves were officially not considered as people and just property of the lawful owners. Or quoting how girls were legally considered adults when they were 12 and it was normal to use girls that young as pawns in political marriages. Stating such facts doesn't make those things any less inhumane than they are.

I wonder why that culture didn't stand the test of time.
edit: actually, nvm. that "culture" does still exist. It's called organised crime. only difference is that those guys today don't give a fuck about Valhalla and don't have to be Scandinavian

Early viking/native interactions were friendly (well neutral (wary) and then reasonably friendly), but there was a lot of miscommunication and just general bad luck (western diseases and Cheese, of all things (which the natives thought was poisoned because it made them really sick to eat it)), which eventually soured the relations and had the natives drive them out.
They were also annoyed because the viking colonies wouldn't trade weapons or armor with them. Just goods and supplies.

For myself personally, this was one of the strongest episodes. Not to suggest the following episodes aren't great, they definitely are. I would even say this is a show that gets better with time, but the interactions between Thorfinn and the English mother and a lot of the subtle symbolism present throughout. Lots of emotion and heartache. The hair comb moment, the part where Thorfinn's eyes are enraged in a fight, to when they soften when they notice the English mother.
Regarding "Vikings" and historical peoples and cultures, its worth considering that environmental factors could have dramatically larger influence. Certain parts of the world, are colder, less fertile in the agricultural sense, have limited resources, so if there are a lot of people, the potential for conflict is high, people adapt for that. We see this reflected in their religion/mythology, ideas about afterlife, day to day routines, beauty standards, ethics and morals and so on. All in all this can mean good and bad things for those peoples and also the internal conflict and external conflict that occurs.
Vinland Saga is additionally interesting because we are getting all this through the lens of modern day people from a different culture, and we also have protagonists and often protagonists subvert certain expected ideas (think how Thors turned to pacifism) to provide contrast. Oh and finally, regarding interactions between Indigenous peoples of the Americas and outside peoples/settlers etc. While in modern times, looking back, we can see that history was not kind or positive to the development of various Indigenous Americans/First American tribes (I am being overly polite) not every single interaction was like this. So the Leif Erikson scene isn't necessarily a lie/deception. Lots of trade, camaraderie and wholesome interactions occurred, especially in certain locations and times. Just naturally overall, on the whole, that doesn't balance or strike out the overwhelming bad that happened. Hope that makes sense, gotta stick up for my boy Leif!
Am enjoying the reaction, am glad you all seem to enjoy the show too, its very underrated!

I love your reactions. I think psychologically it makes sense what he is doing. He was a kid when he saw his father killed by Askellad, as kids we tend to feel very non-complicated feelings(love, hate, sad, happy - world is black and white) and act on them - in this case its hate, and Askellad is the villain. He hates Askellad and therefore wants to kill him... But we are deep in the past, so he cannot just go back home for a few years to train coz finding Askellad then would be truly almost impossible - if he doesnt wanna lose sights of Askellad he has to stay with him, ofc the downside of that is that while he becomes a better fighter he becomes accustomed to death, blood and pain...war and figths are becoming his normal...and in a strange sort of way Askellad is the one raising him up here...this show is taking toxic family environement - to a whole new level XD

  • @kikokid101
    @kikokid101 3 роки тому +2

So the main reason why Thorfinn is helping Askeladd's crew is because Askeladd said that if Thorfinn does certain tasks to prove he is getting stronger (like invading the village and lighting the fire to show the crew where to target their attack via ship) that he will continue to give Thorfinn chances to duel askeladd to the death. Also if he doesn't stay with Askeladd's crew he may never find them again with them potentially going off and dying in war which means he would never get the satisfaction of avenging his father.

    "the medieval trilogy" of anime/manga:
    1. Berserk
    2. Claymore
    3. Vinland Saga
highly recommend checking out (and would love reactions to) Claymore and Berserk!
    (really love Claymore especially)
    ---------------
You should watch (I think you'll LOVE it) and react (would love to see it) to:
    Claymore (26 episodes)
Claymore is the female version of Berserk (and Goblin Slayer and Demon Slayer) and has similar character design to that of the Witcher series (as they all came out around the same time, more or less, likely all influencing each other). Clare truly is Guts’ long lost sister of the sword.
While having nearly an entire female cast, this is no "girly anime", there's no/zero fanservice, and even their chest sizes are realistic, as these girls are all business, and that business is killing yomas
The girls are known as "Silver-Eyed Witches", as they're half-human and half-yoma, giving them their superhuman and inhuman power and abilities. They also are known as "Claymores", due to wielding 6 ft long claymore swords, and with only 1 hand, and they know how to use them. You don't f'k these girls, they f'k you.
Everyone LOVES Claymore, I've yet to meet a single person who doesn't love it, and also girls too love Claymore surprisingly, despite that Claymore is more of a guy's anime (action, violence, etc).
Also, Claymore is the most similar anime to Attack On Titan, even spoiling some major concepts in Attack On Titan. But, it's also completely different from Attack On Titan, of course. So, if you like Attack On Titan, you'll definitely love Claymore as well! If you think Mikasa is sexy and badass... wait until you see Clare (and someone else too)... grins
(japanese/raw or english dub, both are very good, you can see which you like better)

Thats the only thing that makes sense at least, some sami lived with the vikings but no asians did.

This show's probably going to become a bit confusing going on, if you don't know a bit about the different regions and people. At least in most societies and human population. There are still a handful of countries where that is totally normal or encouraged. But in first world countries, no. Murder and rape still happen at a much lower number ofc, there will always be evil. But it’s seen in today’s society’s morals as cruel, evil, etc. that’s the difference.

Well, with only 6 years he was a little messed up, add to that being raised by murderers and rapists. With all that I'm actually surprised he didn't turned even worse tbh

So they asked when he would see his sister and mother again.
Spoiler alert on a story from 1000years ago but thorfinn karlsfanii left Iceland with his father when he was 8 years old, he wouldn't see his mother or sister again until he was in his mid 20s
