The talk was good, but the playing in deep reverb was heaven to my ears, I needed those emotions to come out, and it helped. Thank you very much for this video.
Great video as always. I have owned 5 different CS-80s over the years and each one has its own personality. I also own the DD Mk II. I think it is a great synth and there are lots of similarities but each of the DD and CS-80 have their pros and cons. The fun of playing the DD vs the actual CS-80 with its heft, its keyboard and its massive sound does not compare. The CS-80 is fatter, warmer and has different filter response. But of all the clones the DD comes closest for me. Love your reco of the GS, which I also own and that makes a ton of sense. Thanks again for the great videos!
So what if you add (2) or (3) more DD as they are small and then what can it do? One guy said he played one and it was a mess like an out of tune organ and the upkeep is insanity.
Thanks so much for sharing your opinion! That's super cool to hear that each of your past CS-80s had its own quirks and sound. I'd love to try a real one eventually. And E7 is so good, I am working on a MPE focused demo of it soon!
Great video Miles! Sounds great without the 224 reverb model, but of course the additional width and reverb is great too. Good explanation of the Deckard's Dream, and also great model choice from Meris.
Thanks for the awesome video! I’d love to pick one of these up some day. I thought I’d mention that the Vangelis for Omnisphere pack from Luftrum is pretty dang amazing as well.
Man, GREAT jam at the end there. You're totally right, too, about how the CS-80 is akin to a really solid raw ingredient. Most of us wouldn't just up and eat a whole raw onion or an uncooked ribeye. But as soon as you show that ingredient some love with solid prep and care, it turns into something amazing. Additionally, newer MPE controllers can unlock some magic with synths. I've been learning the Linnstrument, and I basically prefer it as my main synth interface now. You can do non-MPE things with it easily enough, but if you get a synth that can speak the same language, it's a whole new ball game. So much expression!
I really like that LED spectrum-meter you've had in your videos (at least in the ones I've already seen). It looks damn cool 😎Now I wonder where I can get this too?
Add a Meris LVX and set the modulation to Ring Mod CC controlled through MIDI and set PAT to bring in the Ring Mod mix. Or assign that to one of your controllers mix and frequency. Totally cool please add a new video. The CS80 had a fantastic Ring Mod so that will add it to your mix. I see you added that but can it be CC controlled via MIDI? For example on the LVX you can route the Ring Mod to "Pre" or "Pre-wet/dry" or "post" or "feedback" plus you get a lot more like tape delay and barber pole and others. Add an Osmose and bend notes sideways without removing your finger and set the range to whatever you want.
Cool idea! I used the Zoia as a basic ring mod since I am used to using it as a toolbox like this, but great call on the LVX! I had an Osmose and absolutely loved it but ultimately kept my Seaboard as I'm not a trained pianist and the guitar style frets of the Seaboard make more sense to me.
BLADE RUNNER: easily one of my top 5 films of all time so very biased to love this sound and this synth. It’s up there with owning a Tomenosuke Blaster and some genuine Italian Arnolfo de Cambrio Cibi whiskey glasses. Now with an mpe controller and a Meris Mercury 7 or Nightverb it’s “Attack Ships on Fire off the Shoulder of Orion” or “Taffy’s Snake Pit” whenever I wish.
Another point is find a used one for less mine was around $3,200 because new isn't cheap. Some have gotten them for less but since they are gaining popularity the cost remains high. One tuber found one for about $2,500. All depends on the deal you can get. Side note is that the free software available J.F. Sebastian makes programming it instantaneous without moving a slider. You can create hundreds of patches in minutes which makes it worth double. I do recommend an MPE Osmose and both Meris Mercury and LVX which you can use on anything else so buying in separate components is far better than all-in-one units.
Great video! The Deckards Dream is the closest i'm ever going to get to owning a CS-80. It's an amazing synth, but if you don't use a MPE controller (like me 🤦♂️) and a lush reverb it sounds pretty cheap. Butnif you do use them you feel the spirit of Vangelis himself running through you.
Intuitive Instruments Exquis is something I am looking at for its MPE capabilities, if you haven't yet, you should check it out, really cheap way of getting into MPE.
Well said - i used the ROLI most of the time cause I actually didn't connect with it as much until I used the Seaboard. The CS-80 sound I love I've realized has poly at and reverb as a big part!
Yo man, your tracks are absolutely incredible! Massive fan. Really got me into synthwave when it was a lesser known genre. Would you be able to tell me some of the synths you're using? Cheers!
I definitely liked what I've heard! The external ring modulator cannot replace the original, as the CS80 as well as the CS70m (with according settings) allows for drastic mods like a statter effect (with a dedicated envelope) reminding a lot of OB(X)8's Page 2. I'm a little surprised that a myriad of keyboardists entry was Vangelis as his sound is mostly very recognizable. Don't get me wrong I really like that sound. Amusingly, my own entry was a well known band back then extensively using the CS80 as well that overall (not just electronically) pushed anything to the limits: ELO. In the song "I'm Alive" from 1980 almost any chord has the ring modulator on. There are so many synth FXs & shiny (almost metallic) sounds that I'm asking if they were stacking several CS80s together. After 3:10 one can even hear the glissando, that glissed down in the background & definitely has its place. Maybe you like it as well. The first verse seems a little cheesy, but after that it gets varied and bombastic. I'd highly appreciate your opinion about it (even if you don't like it).

The Rachael Ring Modulator is a Eurorack module by Black Corp that can work with the Deckard’s Dream. You plug it in as external audio, and then you can use a MIDI to CV/Gate converter module. Plugging into the gate input allows you to trigger the Ring Mod envelope when you play. Both The Rosen Corporation and Tim Shoebridge have videos showcasing this.

Man your video has such great timing. I've been thinking about picking up a DD. My biggest limitation is space though, I have a 49 key midi controller with poly aftertouch already, but the reason the DD appeals to me (along with all the other reasons you listed) is it's compact form factor. I've only got a little bit of space left in my jaspers because I'm in a studio apartment. Does anyone know of another desktop or modular synth comparable to the DD that supports polyphonic aftertouch?
Cherry audio has a version as well as Arturia with two versions of the CS80 if you don't have a spare DD at hand. There's no cheap MPE alternative unless you have a micro freak to use the keybeds midi with its tiny little ribbon. Otherwise you can just watch the movie until your heart's content.
The Hydrasynth has polyaftertouch and a long ribbon. The Behringer UB-Xa has polyaftertouch. The Behringer P16 will most likely be out in less than half a year from now and has polyaftertouch. The Arturia Polybrute 12 has polyaftertouch and a long ribboncontroller. Good times for synth players😁
Well your nearly halfway there to buying a refurbished CS-80 or three decards dreams and a roli seaboard. I was suggesting cheaper options for people that might not be as fortunate 🙄
What?😅 A CS80 will probably cost 60.000,- usd😅 A Hydrasynth is like only 1.300,- usd. A Behringer UB-Xa about the same as a Hydrasynth. Polybrute 12 is expensive though. 4.000,- usd😅
Compared to a CS80, yeah it is 100% worth it, but people be complaining that something something w/e. Make music with what you've got and be happy you have the ability to make music. Still the DD is defo on my radar, no matter what people say. Thx for the upload and the live perf at the end was just bliss.
@@MilesAwayOfficial I can't point to specific albums. The old analogue spring "tower" MR-IV was, as amazing as it was, expensive, of course, but he would typically blend effects and also use gear in parallel, and perhaps phase old gear out gradually rather than ditching them altogehter, at least in those days. He would use the MicMix Master well into the eighties, too. Apart from factors such as compressors and other colouring devices, it may be very difficult to use a real or emulated 224 to get the "same" reverb as on Blade Runner music track. Evangelis' Deutsche Grammophon album Invisible Connections from 1985 sounds as if the 224 was used quite extensively, and also the whole album sounds a bit like a sound design album for foley and effect sounds that could have been used in the BR movie, but I know no specifics. You're right about that the real CS-80 and reverbs. It's really a "must". That said, Arturias virtual emulation of CS-80 (mine is version 4) has a very good built-in reverb that really seems tailor-made for their softsynth. At least it is optimally tweaked, I find. But I'm no expert.
@@Fredrik-iz4ou actually, to get the Blade Runner sound, it's very easy on a real 224, or 224X. Later models, not as much but his settings have been pretty consistent, and easily called up on a 224. The CS patches, maybe not so much. I am new to the DD MK2, but have had the Seaboard and 224 forever. It seems to be that all three are critical elements to get that particular sound.
Dunno bro... to me Solar 42F is so much more detalied soundwise... not hating on Deckard or something but Solar have much more texture grit to it? Can't find the right words. I'm not even sure if it's correct to compare these two but hey, that's what my ears told me.
late reply but I totally agree! I prefer the SOLAR 42F. The filter is just a lot more characterful and the distorted filter section gets really wild. DD has obviously much better sync with Poly AT and MPE, which S42 cannot do
What’s your opinion on synths that only really sound good with Reverb? I feel like if that’s the case then the instrument should at least come with a reverb in it.
I'm not really sure as this is the first expensive one I've tried where I feel that! I guess I'd say it definitely makes me prioritize getting it less. One of the biggest justifications to me for getting a OB-X8/Prophet 5 is they just sound so rich and great with no FX. For the same price, it trips me up a bit that this doesn't.
Great video. I don’t think it sounds exactly like a CS80. From what I’ve listened the CS sounds a bit fatter and I think the noise generator is fatter too. That said what I personally like with the deckard is the level of accessible configuration for keyboard/touch directly through the nobs. I haven’t seen that anywhere (could be wrong) but it’s quite fun to play with.
No ring mod? For me the ring mod is such a fundamental part of the CS80 that to exclude it basically leaves you with a meh sounding synth that without external effects is quite unremarkable. I really wanted one of these units when they came out but after hearing all the demos i’m glad i didn’t bother, in my experience you can get 99% of the sound with plenty of other synths and plug-ins and lots of reverb!… that extra 1%, even if it exists, is just not worth the asking price. Add the original ring mod and effects and include an authentic sounding lexicon 224 emulation and i would be tempted to get one.
I Like the sound but its not worth the overly hi boutique price, even used. I can do pretty darn well with my Hydra delux(2hydras). It has poly touch and the slider ribbon.. can also play from my seaboard like you have here. its digital but a warm fat digital sound. Also has 5 envelopes so it can have complex envelope shaping.
A real CS80 is insane to play,, it has a beefy warm sound and texture that this dekark can't touch... but you got some nice tones with the Meris for sure... Long live Vangelis...
@@RabbitintheMoon Exaggerating much🤔😄 Shurely there will be some differences as they are two different builds, But the main difference will be the person operating the instrument. Put Vangellis in front of the DD and some random synth hobbyist collector in front of a Yammi CS80, and I think we all know how that’s gonna come out😉
Can't the 3rd wave make these sounds? People say it can sound like a jupiter 8 too. I'd like to see the 3rd wave vs the DD, Ise-nin/jupiter8, and Obx8.
@@MilesAwayOfficial absolutely fantastic, thank you. Nobody makes a video comparing these things, I can only find these comments and videos on reddit and forums.
Am I correct in that you have both the ROLI and the DD plugged in USB and your DAW is used to set the ROLI as the controller for the DD? Then, audio out of the DD into the Meris, then out of that to your interface? I've had the DD on my synth wish list, but synths without built-in keyboards are new to me.

Uhhhh.."It sounds really bland until you drench it in high quality reverb"... Actually this review made me want the reverb you were using, not the synth.
But every synth sounds that way until you add effects but if you added effects to a crappy sound that doesn't magically make the sound any better. This proves that the fundamental sound is awesome.

Does anyone know of another desktop or modular synth comparable to the DD that supports polyphonic aftertouch?
Yes! GS E7, I have a review already but if you can wait a few weeks I am doing an MPE focused video on it soon. It's amazing and half the price.
Magic!!
thanks!
What?😅
A CS80 will probably cost 60.000,- usd😅
A Hydrasynth is like only 1.300,- usd.
The improv song at the end… utterly amazing 🤩
Thank you so much man! and well said

Vangelis famously used a large tower MicMix Master Room spring reverb.
Cool fact! For his solo albums? I know Blade Runner was Lexicon 224 but besides that I don't know
@@MilesAwayOfficial I can't point to specific albums.
@@stevenpagano Okay, I haven't been able to test all that. I'll take your word for it!
Where did you get that VU meter? Wow
yeah i'd like to know that too

Dunno bro... to me Solar 42F is so much more detalied soundwise... not hating on Deckard or something but Solar have much more texture grit to it? Can't find the right words. I'm not even sure if it's correct to compare these two but hey, that's what my ears told me.
late reply but I totally agree! I prefer the SOLAR 42F. The filter is just a lot more characterful and the distorted filter section gets really wild. DD has obviously much better sync with Poly AT and MPE, which S42 cannot do
@@MilesAwayOfficial yup! you described it the way i wanted to say it, thanks bro!
beautiful 👌
Thanks a lot legend! 😊
They should have put a ribbon strip on the module for people with normal controllers
Amazing idea, they should have!
The best comparison is being able to throw the Deckards in a backpack and jogging up a flight of stairs with it. The CS80 is a 3-person hernia.
@@entropybentwhistle 6 person, youll need 3 surgeon as well
@@entropybentwhistle so true… the elephant in the room so to speak
@@entropybentwhistle LOL
totally agree! The aftertouch knobs and sliders are the star of the show. More synths should do that
I prefer the cheap option: creating CS80 patches with ableton stock plugins 🎉
Love that, use the stock tools and learn them like a master is always a great move
Where'd you get that tube looking audio meter I need one for a light show?
It's a variety of FFT Audiolight, I added the link in a pinned comment!
Totally fair! I too think the ring mod exclusion is a big miss. Thanks for watching, tons more synth reviews on my channel :)
Love the CS80 sound. Btw what is that light sculpture thing you have ?

I pinned a comment linking to it since so many people asked!
Korg Prologue can easily get to CS 80 territory
Great shout it totally can! One of my first presets I ever made for the Prologue was emulating Blade Runner
If interested in an original cs 80, a friend of mine have one to sell
if I win the lottery I'll let you know haha!
And yet sounds nothing like what the DD sounds like.
I agree ! I need to try the Hydra, it really looks interesting
A real CS80 is insane to play,, it has a beefy warm sound and texture that this dekark can't touch... but you got some nice tones with the Meris for sure... Long live Vangelis...
@@RabbitintheMoon
Exaggerating much🤔😄
Shurely there will be some differences as they are two different builds, But the main difference will be the person operating the instrument.
Put Vangellis in front of the DD and some random synth hobbyist collector in front of a Yammi CS80, and I think we all know how that’s gonna come out😉
@@1st2mind Ive heard both in person... and the components in a cs80 are on another level... find both units,, compare and hit me back...
I don’t have to find both to make the point that they sound so close where it matters, that the end resultat will be a matter of the person using it.
Just get a Hydrasynth - then you can play like Vangelis all night long👌🏼
Or wait for the Behringer CS-80😉
I really want to try both!
Can't the 3rd wave make these sounds? People say it can sound like a jupiter 8 too. I'd like to see the 3rd wave vs the DD, Ise-nin/jupiter8, and Obx8.
The 3rd Wave can theoretically do this exactly since its bitimbral, I need to try and film a video to see how close it gets.
@@MilesAwayOfficial absolutely fantastic, thank you. Nobody makes a video comparing these things, I can only find these comments and videos on reddit and forums.
What is that spectrum analyzer I searched the entire web nothing but some cheap types I found.

@@AKDanMusicMan actually the ROLI is plugged straight into the DD without needing to be connected to the computer! Then the DD goes direct out into the Meris, which then gets stereo recorded into daw
@@MilesAwayOfficial I did not know you could connect the ROLI directly to a desktop synth. Is that just via USB?
@@AKDanMusicMan no via 5-pin midi! The ROLI has midi out with an included adapter :)
@@MilesAwayOfficial I’ll have to check my box. I don’t remember seeing a midi adapter with my RISE 2, but I was an early buyer. Thanks for letting me know.

Great vid as always but Thats a hell no for me. Softubes model 77 saved me 4 grand and sounds amazing. And yes ive played dekards dream many times over at perfect circuit. Also my cherry audio and arturia versions of cs80 are kind of a joke to me and nowhere close to a cs80. Softube is doing something right though.
Totally fair! I am also personally not going to shell out my own money for this one. But I do miss it. So, would you say Model 77 is the best VST emulation?
Uhhhh.."It sounds really bland until you drench it in high quality reverb"...
Actually this review made me want the reverb you were using, not the synth.
But every synth sounds that way until you add effects but if you added effects to a crappy sound that doesn't magically make the sound any better. This proves that the fundamental sound is awesome.
I truly do feel the DD is unique in that it really needs reverb to shine. Take from that a pro or con as you will! But yea the Meris is incredible
@@MilesAwayOfficial Well I have a Lexicon PCM 96S I paid 3,000 for.....and that little pedal sounds really, really good.
wow !!! i want one... €4,949.00 in germany or 6300 euro in norway... oh:(
Yep its so expensive here in Canada too. This unit was a loaner, I feel lucky!
Oh yeah, you can't have this without the reverb. It's like having a sandwich without the bread.
great analogy!
its beautiful but so expensive for what it is in 2024
100% agreed. I feel honored to play it but I'm not buying one myself

no
I have to say, I am not impressed. I remember when it came out, and said the same thing. Not that great.
Fair! What synths do you prefer?
Ridiculously overpriced
What do you think is a better value synth?
