Comment which synth you liked the best! TEO-5 patches OUT NOW, intro sale price! shop.milesawayofficial.com/products/48-custom-patches-for-oberheim-teo-5-by-miles-away
I spent a some time in a shop comparing the OB6 and TEO. Hard to explain but there is something 'alive' sounding about the OB6 that really spoke to me. The TEO sounded very good and like it would gel in a mix, but it didn't give me tingles the way the OB6 did
Thank you for doing this!! Your love for Oberheim always shines through your videos. They have such an electric and emotional feel to them. Beautiful instruments and my favorites. I may have to get an TEO-5 to add to my OB-6M / X8 combo. The modulation capabilities alone would be fun to explore.
For those spending in the OB6/OB-X8 price range consider TEO-5 X 2 with a Midihub or similar for note distribution and local control off on one or both OR control from other keyboard. A bi-timbral OB10 in effect with some slick voice architecture additions over the other 2 for less than the OB6. When OB-X8 not on sale add a Hydrasynth Deluxe as the control keyboard for less than it. (You miss out on polyAT response from them, but Focusrite will NEVER add that) A bi-timbral "TEO-10" plus a Hydrasynth Deluxe for under $5k...
@@MilesAwayOfficial Ok, to be frank I’ve took it out the box but haven’t actually turned it on yet because I also purchased a Prophet 10 desktop as well (saw a good deal that I couldn’t refuse) and I’m trying to rearrange the studio as I’m getting very low on space and add some patch bays so I can actually use them properly!
got my OB6 largely because of these Oberheim videos you put out. Absolutely love it and learning new things on it every day. Thanks for all you do Miles!!
OB-6 and OBX-8 are in my stable. Picked up an LFE (Low Frequency Expander) for a little more mod option. The big boy is a bottomless pit of inspiration.
I'd like to see the 3rd wave vs the ob x8 (ob6 for distortion comparison). I feel like it could get close enough. I think you're the right guy to make the video, you did convince me to buy the 3rd wave with the custom patches videos.
The TEO and the X8 have more of that Oberheim filter ‘Meow’ and sizzle. They’re all great in their own way. For me, I’m still holding my breath for an expanded TEO platform. 8/16 voice, 61 keys/module, poly AT (which I doubt will be a feature as they seem to wanna hold down the channel AT fort with Moog). Great content as always. Haircut looks good 😉
Thank you so much for this!! I own an Oberheim OB-6, OBX8 and now the TEO-5 and this was so great to see the differences between them all.... (I also have the Matrix 6 and 1000).... Maybe TOO many Oberheims, but I'm a huge fan that loves the sound and I'm kind of a nostalgic collector as well so the overlap doesn't bother me.... (although it makes no sense to have them all in my small studio..... too much "Oberheim" sound overlap vs studio real estate....) To me? This video was exactly what I needed to answer my questions about the synths... Thank you again!!

@@unclejerrysworld wow that quite the vitriol response there Jerry, all I asked you is that it's better than buying subs and views, then you threaten me?
They all sound great. X8 - sounds so lush with the most filters options. I hate they didnt use more real estate with more knobs. The split/layer is magical even without FX. OB-6 - sounds amazing with knobs per function and no menu diving (huge ++). Limited FX, but pedals fix issue easily. Limited with 1 LFO and mod matrix options, but still excels while being handicaped vs other synths. TEO-5 - sounds great and is best bang. If they release a Desktop it will. E even cheaper. Is a no brainer if you can't afford the more expensive synths including the P5/10 or P6. Personally gravitate more to the OB sound, but the P5/10 sounds amazing. No wrong choice and we all win in the end with so many amazing options.
Had an OB6 Desktop, never loved the form factor but did love the sounds. Sold it after a few years with it for God knows what. Bought the TEO5 recently for the mod matrix. I certainly don't regret a thing. I think the OBX8 is the easy sweet spot machine, the TEO5 is the most versatile, and the OB6 is a Sequential themed take on Oberheim. Solid layout, great sounds, not quite the filter I want in one though.
I visited the Oberheim booth at Knobcon but left without getting hands-on playing with any of them. Just as well; I think you’ve helped me understand and compare them better than I could have done myself.
Thanks so much for putting this out man! I'm torn between these three synths, asking myself if I should get a new TEO or a second hand OB-6 or OB-X8? I have a Take 5 on loan and quite like the interface and mod options. On the other hand the OB-X8 sounds so gorgeous and alive, lots of movement, but it does seem a little less intuitive with the page 2 functions. Perhaps the OB-6 is in between the two, having effects and x-mod but for some reason I didn't really fall in love with it when I demo'd it in a shop recently.. perhaps I should spend more time with it. I guess I'll wait for the TEO to be available in Europe and go play all of them side by side. There's only so much you can gather from fora and YT vids :) Thanks again for the videos you make, subscribed!
@@nikolaivdb thanks for the sub! If it’s any help, I’d say that if you have the budget and like the sound, nothing sounds as good as the X8. That being said, if you like sound design you might get a bit bored, and the TEO-5 wipes the floor with the other 2 for interesting sound design. Stay tuned for my TEO-5 patch bank video soon, there’s some incredible stuff in there the other 2 can’t dream of doing
Thank you for the demos! Loved to see all three side by side. I think my vote is TEO if you can live with 5 voices, just love the sound and the mod matrix style of modulation.
I bought the TEO-5 because I’ve always wanted an Oberheim but could never afford one. It sounds amazing and I’m incredibly excited to have it in my collection. That being said, if money wasn’t an issue I would have bought an OB-X8, no question. Great video!
I see the TEO-5 and Take 5 as interesting machines thanks to mod matrix and they booth seem very kind in their sounds not taking over the mix too much if that makes sense. I find them deeper thanks to the matrix and for example in my case as a Take 5 owner I simply love how much flexibility I have and the sound is very nice! Looking forward to get a TEO-5 when they are in stock here in europe. What I really find interesting is that the Take 5 was not impressing to me till I started making more complex patches with the mod matrix which opened up the synth in new possible ways. Nice video!
thank you so much for this comparison! A couple months ago I was juggling back and forth on the OB-6 vs the P6 and I started to settle that for what I write (synthpop/synthwave) the P6 would've been a better rounded option for me. Sold off my T5 and instantly regret it. Alot of the videos on YT doesn't really dive in much on the TEO5 like how you do so it was really refreshing to finally have that to base my choices. On a whim, I picked one up from Guitar Center locally instead of going the P6 route and I don't regret it. It's a nice best of both worlds of the T5 and the x8 sound. If anything, it reminds me ALOT of the Matrix 6 I owned but with more parameter controls and a modern revamp of it that oozes the classic VCO sound of Oberheim. Def noticed that the OB-6 has a bit more sizzle but it's not that much of a difference for me with what the TEO5 offers and at a reasonable price point. Looking forward to buying your patches!!
Thank you for this incredible review. I just purchased the affordable TEO 5. Super excited . Should be here next week. Keep up the great content my friend.
This is the most in-depth review/comparison I’ve seen of the Oberheim synths. Kudos! This just cemented it for me to the TEO-5. It fits perfectly with my style of writing and playing. If I didn’t have my eye on some other gear, I would definitely be looking at the OB-6. Question, when you split the keyboard, is the efx global or can you use a different efx per split? Anyway, you have awesome synth content. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thanks for the video, much appreciated. Three beautiful instruments. Having owned the Ob-6 and almost all Sequential synths including Take 5, and played both x8 and TEO-5, I’m still a bit torn. X8 has the best raw tone by far, and is the classic Oberheim. The Ob6 is a unique synth in its own right but not 100% Oberheimish 😊. But there is another classic Oberheim series, Xpander/Matrix, which had its strengths in the modulation options. The TEO-5 is the first Oberheim to get into that territory with its modulation matrix. That means, while in a mix it could be difficult to spot which one you’re using based on sound characteristics, the TEO-5 can do a lot things the others can’t sound wise. From that perspective it makes it the most versatile, also sounding very good…
Amazing comparison, thanks 🙏 right now the drawback of TEO is the availability :) it’s almost impossible to get one. Dealers (Oberheim) are pushing delivery dates further and further 😢
Awesome video bud! So great to hear these all compared! I’d love to own all three but I’m ecstatic about my TEO! I agree, a dedicated knob for stereo panning would have been nice, ah well. Looking forward to your in-depth TEO review! 😎👍 Thanks for the awesome videos!
Gorgeous patch and playing around 41:30 , and again at 45:16. Really all throughout. You got some fantastic sounds out of the TEO-5. It's no slouch for a "budget" synth. Thanks for doing this entire demo/video. The only thing missing is the blue striped panel replacement for the OB-X8 :D
Thanks for listening! Glad you enjoyed my playing, I try to make these long demos as musics as I can! And yea, blue stripes should have been an option!
Thanks for doing the comparison we all have been waiting to see. I’ve had the ob6 and x8, and ending up selling both (the ob6 for the x8 and the x8 because I couldn’t stand its design/page 2 etc). I am leaning towards getting a Teo-5, and which there was a 6 or 8 voice version of it (or a voice expansion option). If price were no issue, do you think the OB6 or TEO-5 have the better raw sound and filter? I liked the ob6, but not because of its drive/grit.
I find that the way to "soften" the OB-6 is the amp envelope more than the program volume. Nice comparison between these amazing synths! Can't go wrong with any - it's more a matter of which is more right for someone. Or get all of them! I think if I had the space that I'd add the TEO-5 to my OB-6 and ignore the X8.
A lot of my patches in the sounds section have it maxed out; but I am pretty sure it doesn’t drive any analog mixer like the ob-6 does. I’ve just tested it and even with really resonant sounds it’s just a clean boost, not saturation like the 6 has
Awesome, mate! I love your genuine enthusiasm and I deeply enjoyed your inspiring and informative demo. Thanks for your great work! Something makes my heart melt when I hear the OB-6, so that would be the one for me if I ever got a third synth for a troika with my Prophet 10 and Matriarch. Being a choir director, I'd can't help sharing a thought on tuning. When you played that simple sawtooth note on TEO, OB-6 and OB-X8 at 2:14 of the init patch chapter, the TEO sounded considerably flat to me in comparison, and the OB-6 seemed to be a little sharper than the OB-X8 . Now, here's the point. Orchestras have a habit of tuning a little sharp compared to concert pitch, that's why the standard tuning keeps rising over the course of time. One could argue that Mozart's pieces in the key of A major should actually be played in Ab major today to be in the key that he intended… But why do they do it? Simply put: Because sharp sounds better, brighter, simply more appealing than flat. In my choir we had a little game to practice intonation: choir sings with piano a couple of bars, choir sings a cappella for a couple more bars rising slightly in pitch, then stops. The piano will sound awful now, because it is flat. I suggest tuning all instruments to the same pitch in a comparison like this, so that none of them will sound better or worse because it is a little sharp or flat. I do hope it's ok to chime in with this, bro. Keep on groovin'!
@@MilesAwayOfficial The X8 just sounds incredible! You can’t go wrong with it. I hope to get the desktop version one day but for now I’ll be rocking the TEO 5 with a Moog Sub 37 for now. I had the Prophet 10 and OB6 at a point. Kinda just switching it up to enjoy a little of everything!
First of all, thanks for putting out this video. I don’t make videos and have no idea how to make one, but the time, editing and the workflow that it needs to present it must be very time consuming. And I thank you for taking the time to make it for our enjoyment and education. Without a doubt, all 3 synths are very different. The TEO-5 is definitely, sound wise, closer to the OBX8, which is what sequential/and Tom were going after. The OB-6 is a whole different synth. More open, more top end, however to me is missing that classic OB essence. When it came out I was very excited but after listening to lots of videos I loss interest. I used to own an OBXa. So to me and my nostalgia, the sound wasn’t there. That being said, if you want an unique sound the OB-6 is the way to go hands down. The ObX8 is definitely whole different ball game. Rich, full, powerful, it just that classic OB sound. It is what it is a wonderful beast. That being said, for 2024 it may be a very limited synth. So if you are looking for that richness and fullness then look no further the OBX8 is the synth to get. Of the 3 is the darkest sounding though. The TEO-5, is a very nice take of the OBx8. But it needs outboard gadgets to help it out. It sounds wonderful, no doubt, but it is the thinnest sounding of the 3. That being said, I was very impressed by the modulation and the LFOs, the SVF. That to me is the selling point for such a synth. I wish sequential/OB wound have come up with an 8 voice poly with the OBx8 osc , the SEM filter with those capabilities. That would have eaten the OB-6 and the OBx8. IMHO. I am a bit torn, my TEO-5 is about ship with my Moog Muse. I am thinking of adding my 80s ProCo RAT pedal for OD sounds, and add a parametric EQ to help boost certain frequencies for the TEO-5, and run it through my Fender Deluxe Reverb to make it more alive and use the tube reverb. I also have analog delays that I can use it as well in order to spice up the sound. If I don’t like it I’ll return it and get the OBx8 then. In the end, like you mentioned, in a mix no one will hear the difference between the 3. This is just nitpicking, and being nerdy about it. Just because we love synths and how the sound and inspire us to make music.
Thanks for such a great comment! These do take quite a while to make so I appreciate you noticing :) totally agree with your thoughts, except for me I love that the OB6 doesn't sound as traditional Oberheim. I think I just personally love the sound of an overdriven mixer (Moog muse can do that too, which makes me want one). I think you will love the TEO-5 but if you don't, the X8 is certainly glorious too. Tell me what you end up doing!
As long as you don't need/depend on an extensive mod matrix, the OB-6 is incredible. And it has a far broader range of sounds than most people seem to think (or explore?). But, even with that, it can't touch the TEO-5 for sound design.
Sold my OB-6 a few years ago. Certainly a fine basic synth. It leans heavily on the SEM filter and 80s aesthetics, but was ultimately frustrated by the limited modulation sources/destinations, basic/lackluster onboard effects, lack of modern patch editor and DAW integration, and banking through nameless (only numbered) presets on a modern synth. The banking is retro cool at first but quickly gets old. I realize that’s a nit, but having to memorize hundreds of patches by numbers is a flow killer, at least IME. At 6 voices it is, but barely a poly synth. Voice cutoff is something you’ll have to mind and plan around. If it cost half as much I’d understand but it’s objectively underpowered at a $3,500 price point.
You would probably love the TEO-5 then, but also might feel limited by the voice count! But if you are used to modern workflow, TEO-5 is by far the choice
No problem avoiding "80s aesthetics" in terms of the sound of an OB-6. I love the workflow - far superior to the X8. Numbered presets are easy as long as you organize them. Voice cutoff has been a thing for a long time (e.g., Prophet 5), not unique or special in the OB-6, except it does a great job of it - and can also be somewhat mitigated via using a BBD delay.
@@MilesAwayOfficial The TEO-5 is a good value. But, what if I said instead of 5 voices, you could have infinite Oberheim voices, total recall, full automation of all synth parameters, seamless DAW integration, with sound so full and convincing that 99.999% of listeners will not know it's not one of these three synths, yet is a synth officially endorsed by Tom Oberheim, and, it can be delivered to your studio today, for free, oh and almost like magic...takes up no space, is virtually impossible to break, it's wireless (uses no audio or power cables), never has to be dusted, is more energy efficient, has a fraction of the carbon footprint, and is $1,400 - $3,900 less than the TEO-5, OB-6 or OB-XA? Oh...and you already own it and said it's awesome? 😉Haha. I'm surprised you didn't link your GForce Oberheim OB-X review! Honestly, I sold most of my hardware and have been equally happy with VST equivalents from Arturia and others for all of the above. Obviously, hardware is great for other reasons (not knocking it!), but perhaps worth reminding that the OB sound is accessible and very well covered in VST options too.
All three sound great. They sound about what they cost, so the OB-X8 has the highest fidelity, followed by the OB-6 then the TEO-5. But, in a mix you probably aren’t going to notice the difference, and the TEO-5 is the most flexible. After your last video I ordered a TEO-5 but now I’m getting tempted to cancel that order and get the OB-X8 module instead, but I’ll try to resist. The Take 5 is currently my favorite poly, and I’m sure I’ll love the TEO as well. What reverb did you use with the OB-X8 at the end of the video? It sounded great.
Totally agree with this! The TEO-5 is great as you hear. I honestly am not sure which one id get, but it would come down to if you value more voices and sound fidelity or a much deeper synth (TEO). Reverb was Big Sky MX Saturn rings preset on all the playing demos!
I was hoping this video would help me decide between the teo-5 and the ob-6 to go with my ob-8x, but they both sound great in their own way… thanks Obama
I couldn’t stand its workflow. So much empty real estate and so much menu diving, and wonky arpeggiator. No denying it has the clearest raw sound quality.
@@MilesAwayOfficial I just picked up the desktop version from sweetwater. My guy gave me a discount on top of the already discounted price. I spend $$$$ with him so it’s pays off at times like these. Haha
@@MilesAwayOfficial I don’t really like one more than the other. I made some awesome patches on the take 5 that heavily make use of the filter drive character that the teo can’t do and the teo has that sem filter and fm tracking that you can’t get on the take 5. I mean you kind of can with sync on the take 5 as fm goes but it is still very different. Now if you love the sem filter over a prophet filter you have to go teo.
Love your videos and your channel dude! Id been shopping for my first hardware synth for about a year and thought I was settled on a Roland since I love their classic sounds but I discovered your channel and now own a TEO 5. I love it so much and basically learned how to use it from you! Keep up the great work and looking forward to your TEO 5 patches :) If you have a moment for a question that might be random....how would you create a reverse reverb kinda sound (like shoegazer like / My Bloody Valentine) on the TEO? Ive gotten close but was curious of your thoughts. Maybe when you do your full TEO review :) Thanks for your hard work man!
Fantastic Demo 👌 Always 💯 All 3 Synths are Incredible and such Beautiful Sounds, but if I had to choose purely based on what I just watched and listened to, TEO5 would be my choice, it sounds really close to the OB's and the price tag is so good 👍 🤩 🙌
The components and technology used in TEO-5 and OB-X8 are very similar, but the components and technology used in the OB-6 is pretty different from the former two. If you dare to open up all 3 synths and have a look at internals, you will immediately see big differences between TEO-5/OB-X8 and the OB-6. The TEO-5/OB-X8 relies more on surface mount chips for the VCOs and VCFs, but the VCOs and VCFs on the OB-6 are novel discrete designs that are put onto DIMM-cards -- the same DIMM-format as modern computer memory cards. :)
I've watched this video a few times now (great video btw) and I thought watching would help me choose but I'm actually more undecided 😀. They all sound amazing to me and I can't really hear that much difference between them to be honest. The digital overdrive on the TEO-5 is a real pain though - it sounds terrible when driven hard. I hate digital distortion/clipping of any kind as it's unforgiving so it sounds very harsh. The overdrive on the OB-6 is beautiful - very musical. The price difference between the TEO-5 and the OB-6 is huge, even the desktop is at least £500 more than the TEO-5. As I'll be controlling the unit via MIDI the keyboard size of the TEO-5 is not that important but the fact it has a keyboard means I can still use it independently of the studio which is very useful actually. So at the moment it's a toss up between the TEO-5 and the OB-6 Desktop as I already have a Moog Matriarch on order, but I'm definitely leaning towards the TEO-5 due to its excellent price. I still want that OB-X8 at some point though - what a machine 🤩. Some nice melodies by the way. Do you plan to get the Moog Muse?
Great comparison, as always! :) I remember you once did compare the Summit to a Moog (I think it was the Matriarch) - I can't find it right now. My question though is, if you could do a comparison between something like the TEO 5 with your Moog for some bass tones. My situation is, I'm using software synth most of the time and what I'm missing the most and where it seems no software comes close are those Moog basses. But I always shy away from spending that amount of money to get a monosynth, so I'm wondering which of these semi-affordable poly-synths can get relatively close to some sort of Moog bass and leads. What I really love are the kind of old-shool kinda funk and soul ones, or in the style of Michael Jackson but also a lot of Snarky Puppy songs have some great Moog-tones. The gsmusic one seems like a good choice but from demos I've found it doesn't seem to have that thick lows. Any recommendations? Otherwise I'd love to see some sort of Moog vs the rest, especially when it comes to bass.
Nice comparison. I bought a used Take-5 for $900 and am very happy and consider it a bargain. When you mentioned "if you have $3500 to spend" my mind went way far from the three OBs. you demoed. B-stock Polybrute $1600, used SCI Rev 2-16 $1700, UB-Xa used $950 is the best analog bargain out there. Yet, I digress. Let's face it, even at $4K OB-X8 is a redonkulous price for 8-voice analog. Ya don't even get the pinstripes for that amount. A used Muse for $3K, although it's retro-fugly is just another consideration, although not a bargain. I will watch for a used TEO-5 at the right price, the filter and TZFM make it a standout.
I got incredibly lucky and bought one of the first wave of TEO-5 (serial #000093) this week at Guitar Center. Manager was able to get me 10% cause I traded in a pedal. I've owned the Prophet 6, OB6 and Prophet-10 Rev4. The TEO-5s modulation matrix and thru-zero FM make it my favorite poly I've ever owned. Its the crazy depths the Behringer Deepmind can get to.
State variable is not what you think it is. All 3 synths have a state variable filter. It is the topology of the filter itself, not the function of the knob. Maybe variable state variable is appropriate. The cool feature of the filter as opposed to just a multimode filter is the filter design gives access to all states simultaneously rather than manipulation of the state to create the different states. It’s too bad the X8 didn’t bring that capability to the panel since it’s physically there in the synth. Still love my X8. My TVS pro can do the other coolness.
@@vaportrails7943 right. And the OB-X had the SEM state variable filter with only the LP mode available. Still SVF. This and people using SEM and CEM analogously keeps me awake at nights… lol
ah shit right when I was about decided to pull the trigger on an OB6 I come across this video and the TEO-5... damn can she sing! an absolute beauty. now at a loss... again...
@@MilesAwayOfficial you confuse me in the best way possible 😁 you're videos are terrific man! really enjoy them all. this would be my first (for now) hardware synth. I am definitely drawn to the uniqueness of the OB6 but the similarities on the TEO-5 plus the extra mod options (and the price tag) are incredibly appealing. I'd be mainly doing soft drone ambient, textures and soundscapes with heavy FX processing (granular stuff and the likes), layering and VSTs where needed... which would be your pick for this, if you had to pick? Still OB6? Cheers Miles!
Thanks for 1 hour of Oberheim sounds. I have an OB-6 and an X8m; so no need for the TEO. I agree that the OB-6 sounds more saturated; the X8, on the other hand, sounds more defined and complements better with other synths. My long-time dream couple has been the P5 and the X8. However, recently the P5 lost its place to a Moog Muse with amazing stereo filters. Muse + X8 = synth heaven. Have you already tested the Muse?
The OB-6 doesn't have to sound "saturated" if you manage the osc and amp levels. The default presets crank everything to the max - like the loudness wars, most patches, to me, sound better with things turned down.
The two larger models might have more professional features of a kind. All the same, in autumn 2024, the one that I affectionately call “Thomas Elroy Oberheim Five” is the one that’s the single-best value. If I can afford any of them and even if I could afford the two bigger ones, I think I would likely still get the TEO-5.
I also hope they find a way to unlock the continuously variable SEM filter in the X8. I know they were trying to be true to the vintage models when they reissued it but that was a huge miss for me. To have that filter built in and not be able to use it in that way is such a bummer.
To me, the OB8 has that classic deep powerful vintage sound, but the TEO 5 would be more suited to modern music because it has its own tone and the modulation options make it very special. The OB6 is surely a great synth, but in this video it seemed to have too much resonance, as if it lacked bass or body… But it just my opinion And it's very difficult to give an opinion on these great instruments just by watching videos on UA-cam. You'll have to try it yourself!
Great video comparisons, enjoy your other vids as well. I just bought OB-6 Desktop and Hydrasynth Desktop, any rumors about a TEO-5 desktop coming? Almost tempted to sell OB-6 desktop and get OB-6 keyboard or TEO-5 Keys. thanks.
Imagine this!…….Oberheim made a synth module with the OBx8 sound but they teamed up with Wes Audio and used their technology for digitally controlled analog hardware which allowed for instant digital recall and seamless automation within DAWs but with true analog sound. Then just for good measure the synth had a mereki anolog delay built into it an and a fantastic reverb built in also both digital recall. Imagine 🤩
Thank you very much for interesting presentation. Im very impressed of TEO-5. I use Trigon-6 and Take-5, i think with TEO-5 it would yet be a bit more interresting. What's going on with the intonation of your OB-6? Perhaps one time reset tunning would be helpful? Best greetings! TT
I kinda like it they all are not the same, I love my OB-6 desktop and I love to have the TEO-5 with it's slightly different sound and many effects and the huge Mod matrix. Can't afford an OB-8 and will never buy it, so and don't care about it. I like old synths with a modern twist better and of course more value for your money.
If i after versatility i will go for Summit , Hydra, Modwave . 3rd WAVE for more rich people . Good, quality analog raw sound doesn't need too much modulation . if i obsessed with real OB sound i will take a OB-X8 but i don't . OB 6 its a top mixture of best from Sequential and Tom for me . TEO 5 just lack a little bit in sound . you don't have this 3D in TEO 5 . if you want a phone get a Xiomi if you want IPHONE yo must pay more . i have OB6 because it give me a quality in sound and the most interesting analog filter but maybe i biased . i had a Take 5 and sold it after 4-5 months without regrets . Still missing my REV 2 . i have a XIOMI because i don't need an IPHONE... yes yes only my IMHO
great video, I am a fan and purchaser of your sound sets. what 3-tier keyboard stands are you using. small floor print on your stands is what I need for.
I think part of the reason the TEO-5 sounds has a difference in sound that you describe as compressed/limited is that the VCA is digital, it's not a fully analog signal path like the others. Take5 is the same way. It's still a great sounding synth for the money for sure, but I guess the circuitry is one compromise they make to keep the price down.
I thought that there were more than just three synthesizers and that's including the OB-6 by sequential but anyways that's not overly important, My favorite by far is the OB-6 and it's not just because I own one, it's also because the OBX8 it's a button the filter mode is a button it's not very conducive to creativity. I will give them props though The teo-5 they have finally gone back to the continuously variable from low-pass to notch to high pass and everything in between that type of filter is just way to money to try something different like pressing buttons like how are you going to get 81% low pass with you know 19% notch and 120 res or 30 low pass 70 notch. That being said I'm going to buy an OBX8 and I'll probably buy a teo-5 as well. I completely love oberheim synthesizers
Wondering if any of the Obers can do MPE? I see you have a Roli. Have you ever use it as a controller?( or Touche and Osmose?) Great breakdown! Thanks!
OB-6 for me. Am on my third now after missing the past ones. For me it's the perfect workflow to sound ratio. 6 Voices is minimum (the stealing on the TEO would drive me mad), I hate menu diving on analogs (so X8 and TEO lose there for me). I do like the sound of the X8 obviously, but it makes less sense to me, like my Prophet 10 r4 did (which I sold because I preferred my Trigon-6). The OB-6 has a very unique sound, not completely vintage but great anyway. TEO sounds smaller and far too much stuff than I care for. X8 would be great if it had ALL the OB-6 had too. So overall, the OB-6 is the sweetspot for me but I wouldn't turn my nose up an an X8 I'd never swap my OB- for one.
The OBx 8 for filters, all day long, bigger, fatter, more flexible, just better. Features, TEO 5 by far. Not sure where that leaves the OB6, if the OB6 had the features of TEO 5 then i would totally discard the 5, but it doesn't, so im not sure where the OB6 sits.
I have a Take 5. Would you say Teo-5 would be a good addition instead of the OB-6? I’ve recently sold my Matriarch (which I thought I would never do), so that I could order a Muse. However, I really do love the Oberheim sound. I cannot afford to buy an OB-6 and a Muse right now. I’m wondering if the Take 5 has too much overlap with the Teo-5 compared to the OB-6. If so, I could forego the Teo-5, and get the OB-6 next year. I should mention that I have the Summit as well, which I currently have no plans on selling.
Late reply! I think the TEO-5 is a great synth if you want the OB sound. It's so close the the X8 for the relatively low price. Would be an awesome combo with Muse! That being said, I am personally going to try to trade or sell it to keep the channel content going, just cause I prefer the other OBs slightly :)

For me it’s still the OB6. It was a perfect collaboration between 2 legends ❤
I spent a some time in a shop comparing the OB6 and TEO.
Hard to explain but there is something 'alive' sounding about the OB6 that really spoke to me.
The TEO sounded very good and like it would gel in a mix, but it didn't give me tingles the way the OB6 did

@@googlingthevoid thank you so much! Did you go for it? I made a Teo 5 deep dive if you are still on the fence

I've been very curious about the TEO-5. Nice to see a good comparison video.

Just the video I waited to see, and by one of my fave Tubers! Thanks Miles!
Thanks for watching man!
All three sound beautiful, which makes the TEO-5 a bargain when it's 43% the price of an OB-6!
Well said! When I first got into hardware, I would have had a heart attack to get a synth as good as the TEO for that price.
Great assessment! Stoked you are loving the TEO-5, it really does sound great.
I visited the Oberheim booth at Knobcon but left without getting hands-on playing with any of them. Just as well; I think you’ve helped me understand and compare them better than I could have done myself.

There's only so much you can gather from fora and YT vids :)

@@nikolaivdb thanks for the sub! If it’s any help, I’d say that if you have the budget and like the sound, nothing sounds as good as the X8. @@MilesAwayOfficial Appreciate the reply, have a nice sunday!
I know exactly how you feel, never thought I’d own an Oberheim at all, loving my TEO as well! 👍
TEO is an incredible synth! I’ve already used it on several tracks, despite having too many synths. It has that sound. Enjoy it!!
I have both and I find myself using the TEO-5 more. You made a great purchase.
I love my Matrix 6r...an extremely underrated classic.
Teo-5 sounds very nice, but still love OB-6 to pieces! 💯
Thank you for this incredible review. I just purchased the affordable TEO 5. Super excited . Should be here next week. Keep up the great content my friend.
Congrats! Deep dive video coming today! Hope you enjoy it! Thanks for watching!
Yo dawg, I heard you like Oberheim, so I put Oberheim on top of your Oberheim on top of your Oberheim.
hahahaha
I love the TEO, it packs so much fun in one tiny box 📦 plus for the price point the sound and build quality is phenomenal
Totally agree!
From that perspective it makes it the most versatile, also sounding very good…
Still love my OB6, but that matrix on the TEO is very nice.
@@TheDjpredator totally! It really unlocks the synth
The best synth would be the one I can afford, but then 5 voices is just not enough :(
Do love your demonstration a lot, thank you very much.
Amazing comparison, thanks 🙏 right now the drawback of TEO is the availability :) it’s almost impossible to get one. Dealers (Oberheim) are pushing delivery dates further and further 😢

@@denzilstudios7072 it’s pretty amazing eh!
17:43 I sense you falling in love with the fact that the note cutoff isn't happening on the OBX8 as brutally. Thanks for this killer comparison.
good analysis and thanks!
@@MilesAwayOfficial I fucked up my timestamp but it was at a point where voice limitation was clipping the non-X8 machines.
You need to turn up Voice Volume (program menu) on the TEO if you want to make a true comparison to the OB-6. It's set at 100 out of 127 by default
A lot of my patches in the sounds section have it maxed out; but I am pretty sure it doesn’t drive any analog mixer like the ob-6 does. I’ve just tested it and even with really resonant sounds it’s just a clean boost, not saturation like the 6 has
@@MilesAwayOfficial It's digital gain, though you could still get some clipping, depending on circumstances.
One could argue that Mozart's pieces in the key of A major should actually be played in Ab major today to be in the key that he intended…
But why do they do it? Simply put: Because sharp sounds better, brighter, simply more appealing than flat.
In my choir we had a little game to practice intonation: choir sings with piano a couple of bars, choir sings a cappella for a couple more bars rising slightly in pitch, then stops. The piano will sound awful now, because it is flat.
I suggest tuning all instruments to the same pitch in a comparison like this, so that none of them will sound better or worse because it is a little sharp or flat.
I do hope it's ok to chime in with this, bro. Keep on groovin'!
Thanks man! Appreciate the in depth comparison! I’d give more but I am strapped at moment!
that's so kind of you!! which synth did you like best??
I was ready to buy a teo 5 brand new, but then I came across an ob6 for 500 more the market price of the teo. I bought the ob6.
Wow! Great video Miles. Amazing Obees for sure. I am astounded how well that TEO5 competes with the other OBs, at a fraction of the cost.
@@RoyChartier thank you! It’s a great synth

@@MilesAwayOfficial Absolutely 💯 and you are an Amazing Musician 👌 have a fantastic week 🙏🏼🤩🙌
very cool! i am not brave enough to do that, but i believe you! I could not believe how different the OB6 sounded
There are pics around for all 3 synths. The muse is built the same way as the OB6 with individual voice cards.
Turn up Voice Volume in the program menu on the TEO-5 - it's set at 100 out of 127 by default, and will therefore be a little quieter than the OB-6
Congrats!! TZFM is truly incredible, I wouldn't be surprised if all the new sequential synths use it
State variable is not what you think it is.
“Sweepable” SVF is the language they use for those knobs. Where the X8 is just switchable.
@@vaportrails7943 right. And the OB-X had the SEM state variable filter with only the LP mode available. Still SVF. This and people using SEM and CEM analogously keeps me awake at nights… lol
ah shit right when I was about decided to pull the trigger on an OB6 I come across this video and the TEO-5... damn can she sing! an absolute beauty. now at a loss... again...
Sorry to confuse you! If it helps, I prefer the sound of the OB-6, but the TEO-5 is much more deep and interesting for sound design if you like that
@@MilesAwayOfficial you confuse me in the best way possible 😁 you're videos are terrific man! really enjoy them all.
this would be my first (for now) hardware synth.
That is a great pair. I went Muse + TEO- 5
@@justaregularrobloxplayer5678thinking of that combo as well. (Having already the Muse)
The OB-6 doesn't have to sound "saturated" if you manage the osc and amp levels. The default presets crank everything to the max - like the loudness wars, most patches, to me, sound better with things turned down.
@@cfs So true. Even famous synth UA-camrs always crank everything up to 100%. I mostly use 50 - 80%, depending on the synth.
The TEO-5 has the best bang for the buck, you will love it if you get it!
Excellent video! OBX8 period.
Thanks!
I also hope they find a way to unlock the continuously variable SEM filter in the X8. I know they were trying to be true to the vintage models when they reissued it but that was a huge miss for me. To have that filter built in and not be able to use it in that way is such a bummer.
But then it sounds like everything else.
@@bengsynthmusic they’re all Oberheims 🤷🏻♂️ Not a bad thing for them to sound similar.
Imagine 🤩
That sounds like my dream! I really would love good pedal makers like Walrus to team up more with synth companies
Thanks!!! Great Video
TT
Glad you enjoyed! and yea personally I think pairing Moog filters (trigon) with any OB filter is the ultimate combo!
I like the OBx8 the best, its filter is more defined and open. The way the oscillators move against each other has a looser feel.
@@bigjayrillah3508 agree with you there! Sound wise it’s just so open
Awesome video! Insane sounds. Teo5 got my vote for price/sound ratio. Also whats that triple Stand you have there?
Thank you! Unfortunately the stand has no brand name and I got it used years ago!
great comparisons
Thank you!
TEO5 + OB6 + OBX8 = TEOBX19 🤓
LOL
coverheim-19
I agree! It’s a bit of a shame but yea costs do need to be kept down
I thought that there were more than just three synthesizers and that's including the OB-6 by sequential but anyways that's not overly important,
My favorite by far is the OB-6 and it's not just because I own one, it's also because the OBX8 it's a button the filter mode is a button it's not very conducive to creativity.
Thanks!
The OB-X8 added MPE in version 2.0.
OB-6 has MPE.
Well said! I love the 6 as well for all the reasons you listed! Classic synth.
OB-8X holy *@#$. But in reality, between the three of them, the OB-6 has something special.
Thanks!
Wow thanks so much for the donation!!
OH HI THERE, I'D LIKE A TRIPLE STACKED OBERHEIM SANDWICH!
Miles Away: SPECIAL DELIVERY BUCKO.
OB-6 sure
TEO-5 = instant synthwave
I liked the X8 most!
@ 17:22 the OB X8 sounds the best 🤙
I agree!!
OB-6 sounds different to both! I like it best
Awesome video! Is that syntrix still getting any love?
@@TheMachinesWon 100%! It’s too aggressive for my next miles away ep but it’s been getting some use for sound design!
They all sound great, but there is something special about the OB-6 that I think only exists because of that collaboration between Dave and Tom.
yes! I fully agree Effigy
What do you think of REV2 sound?
The TEO sounds way more Oberheim to me. More sizzle on the filter which I like.
@@aristotlekumpis7095 fair! It definitely sounds more like the X8 than the 6
The best Oberheim of late is the Abstrakt Instruments VS-1, it crushes everyone else. I just wish it was available...
Never heard of that! Is it a plugin?
