Motorizing the Bandai TECS Sir Handel | Sodor Scratchbuilding by cudak888

- In this build video, we motorize a Bandai TECS Sir Handel model with a Bachmann Skarloey chassis, and improve the model's buffer beam detail to hide the gaps used for the original Bandai magnet couplers.
The Bachmann chassis modification now allows the Bandai model to be run as a model railroad locomotive on 9mm gauge track; a size shared by HOn30, HOe, 009, and N-scale. Needless to say, it looks a lot better too!
Enjoy!

Big or small, you'll impress us all!
Models. I mean models.
Seriously missed these sorts of videos from ya, hoping you do more.
Should be more, plus a series in store.
That’s a very nice model of sir Handel
I do hope Bachmann makes Sir Handel, Peter Sam, Duncan, and Duke. That will complete the Skarloey Railway.
And rusty
@@justang8490 probably gonna be released
and Smudger
Are you stupid they will never make ah duke or smudger because they will never come back
Why you calling people stupid?
Very awesome build Kurt. You've inspired me to finally go ahead and put my Bandai Diesel 10 on a Skarloey chassis.
Howdy KM! Wouldn't suggest the Skarloey chassis for that! But I think I get the joke ;)
Wow. I'm speechless. That's sick af man. Great work!
Absolutely brilliant! It looks so good. This video was very well made and informative. I may make one of these one day myself. I'm hoping to become more knowledgeable in customs and Bachmann in general. I'll definitely be using this video for reference in the future!
wasn't expecting a video like this, nice to have you back
Never thought I'd be doing the NG engines myself, but opportunity has arisen.
nice to see you're still at it!
You definitely deserve my sub!
Amazing job on sir handle!
-Dj
Awesome build. Good to see you're still here on UA-cam!
I never left :)
You did a great job. 5 stars!
Falcon? Getting the Motorized Treatment? "That would never suit His Grace."
All being dumb aside, this looked like an interesting project. Not one where I'd be totally interested in actually doing it, myself, but seeing someone do it instead.
Hahaha. Would you believe old Duke is up next? Not sure if I'm going to scratchbuild him or use the Bandai model. The Bandai Duke looks a bit clunky for my tastes, honestly. Sir Handel and Skarloey are the only ones they really seemed to get perfect. Peter Sam's cab roof looks off, Rheneas' cab is too squat, and Duncan's proportions are completely off.
@@cudak888 will this duke ever come out? XD
Awesome! You sir, never cease to inspire me!! :D
Thank you!
watching this because Bachmann is making Sir Handel
Welcome back old friend.
Thank you!
@@cudak888 welcome stanley
Back at it again
Yep!
Hey cudak, when are you gonna finish your James replica?
with the white vans
this made my day
Looks nice. Cool to see a Thomas video from you again.
Thanks!
nice to see you
Yay! More videos!
It's good to see you back to making custom Thomas models after so long!
Thank you - it's good to be back!
cudak888 Will we ever see the continuation of the Gauge 1 James Project? If you don't mind me asking.
Love it!
You're back
Great! Cuz there's a Bachman rehneus coming out!
Kind of reminds me of looking into a Model Railroader Magazine where they show you how it's done it's a very good replica you did there it's almost like the real Sir Handel.
excelent!
Real nice
Great mod!!!
I have never seen a bachmann sir handle before
wonderful!I wish you make peter Sam he is my favorite.
Have you ever considered making a HO/OO Gauge Lady from the ERTL model? I have seen some people do it before and I have given it a go myself but failed miserably. I could have done with a detailed step by step like this well presented video. Either way keep up the good work.
PLEASE! PLEASE! I'VE BEEN WAITING 3 YEARS! JAMES PART 6!
Fat controler:im banishing you to the shadow realm
Sir handel:NOOOOOOOOO
Fat controler:much better
Wow! This was incredible cudak888. I'm guessing though that this won't work for some Narrow Gauge engines, such as Rheneas & Rusty :/
Should be quite easy with Rusty. Rheneas as well (though I'd wait for the Bachmann model). Ironically enough, since the Bachmann model isn't quite the right scale, I'm probably going to motorize the Bandai Skarloey with the same Bachmann chassis.
Nice to see U back in action (long time watcher, first time commenter) and wonderful custom! Can sir Handel fit in that N-scale shed that was in the video?
With a bit of fiddling, it'll happen. It's a close match to the engine shed on the Mid Sodor Railway in S4.
***** I'll say. wonderful work. I just might try this (if I can get the models)
i have done 30 n gauge thomas locos with the kato chassis 11-103 - the locos are either push & play - ertl - i also used - jock to make 4 middle range locos on n gauge with driver and fireman on the tender for bert - mike - sid - yet to see jock on film ERTL Thomas Jock Arlesdale RARE Train Loco i found 4 cheep ones
I like narrow gauge
Hi there, great video on how you did Sir Handel, do you think you'll do Duke at some point?
you should do the rest of the Narrow Gauge Engines and then do a big series just based on a little engines
Can you please make Duncan? He is my favorite narrow gauge character.
Same
it would be cool if the eyes on this could move like a standard bachmann ttte locomotive.
Me too.
rare video of sir handel being biofused
how I wish Bachmann or Hornby did stuff like this
Ah, but they do, and it probably won't be long before Sir Handel is part of the lineup along with Skarloey and Rheneas. I wouldn't be making these from Bandai models if I could have chosen that easy route for this show!
this is amazing
are you still doing james
Lovely stuff. Do you plan on adding couplings to sir handel?
Thank you! Not at all - I want it to look prototypical. I might try running a scale chain on the rear hook, but I'll probably just be asking for trouble. When I use it in the series, I'll probably run a hidden coupler from the chassis to the following truck.
Are you make a series with these?
Do rusty next
How did you secure the motor to the chassis? Doesn’t it vibrate when it runs?
its Oh Oh Nine,
and the usual metal for Diacast toys is Zinc based not steel
may have a this
Can you do a video for motorizing for duke? You can use the rheneas chassis
Glad to see a new renaissance! By the way, I have a couple of questions.
1. Was this meant to be "TV-Series" Styled? If not, are the Season 4 models S Gauge or O Gauge
2. Do you know if this chassis would fit Peter Sam?
It's TV-series styled, but the TV series models never quite represented their gauge prototypically. S5 was O-gauge; no idea what S4 was, but it was wider than HO, probably to clear the eye mechanisms. Custom gauge, perhaps?
What do you mean by custom gauge?
He probably means Britt Allcroft and her team commissioned a custom scale for use of the Skarloey Railway. And if that is the case, then the models from the Skarloey Railway have no official scale.
I don't know. I think the SKR track looked like that it's O Scale.
I came across this photo a few days ago from S4. I'll bet that the S4 and S5+ models are all O-gauge; the models were simply scaled up in size for S5. Note that S4 models don't really look to be riding on anything that narrow to begin with. ttte.wikia.com/wiki/File:TheThomastheTankEngineMan(Bookmarkdocumentary)24.png
How is he gonna pull rolling stock?
Please do this with Peter Sam
how much did sir handel cost? i want to know, because i'm attempting to make the tallynn railway engines.
and would a ertl sir handel work?
A Troubling Paxman Productions probably, ERTL looks similar in size but idk
Can you do Duncan and Duke next?
Excuse me but why are you putting lead in this thing you could get poisoned! Or are lead weights just protected with some kinda coating or is the lead dust not able to get out. Please answer because I'm not sure I wanted to get the Bachman ho scale trains but I read on the back that they had lead in them so I'm really not sure if I should but them or not
Don't grind it, lick it, or eat it. If you're worried about handling the lead, use gloves and you'll be fine. You need not worry if you are not disassembling the model.
So exactly HOW are you going to couple this up to rolling stock? Just curious.
When I realized I forgot that bit, I decided to build a Series 4 replica instead :)
Looks good, but sir Handel is supposed to have small wheels, like steamroller wheels. Skarloey s wheels are bigger
Eh, still pretty fucking awesome.
hey how would i add a coupling on this
If you don't mind leaving the buffer beams cut open at the center, I'd epoxy a pair of coupler boxes to the shell.
Can you make a Ho scale skarloey from a track master
But what about the replica James in part 6?
Does he even have a connector
Did you get the chassis on it's own? Also how much did the project cost?
Chassis and assorted parts were $67.20 from Bachmann, with Priority shipping. Add $20-30 for sundries, bits and bobs, plus the $40 to $50 that the Bandai model will run.
FYI, items ordered were as follows:
1 x Chassis w/Cylinder (HO Narrow Skarloey) (STL01-00J01) = $15.00
1 x Motor (HO Narrow Skarloey) (MOTOR-10139) = $15.00
1 x Wheel Set (HO Narrow Skarloey) (STL01-00H01-00H02) = $12.50
1 x Underframe (HO Narrow Skarloey) (STL01-00E01) = $2.00
1 x Deck w/Bumpers (HO Narrow Skarloey) (STL01-00B01) = $8.50
1 x Rear Wheel (HO Narrow Skarloey) (STL01-00H03) = $4.00
thank you

Hmm. New video of a with a finished project. Wanna take a bet?
Does it work with all engines
Not really. Depends on the model.
