Excellent stuff, love your videos, Barton St reminds of the Holdenhurst road or Pokesdown high street in Bournemouth/Boscombe. Clapham, Tooting, Cricklewood, Kilburn and Steatham all have a similar set up which is basically a really long road with some local businesses and low rent properties. Northwest London was probably the worst I have seen, people defecting in the street, used syringes in the drains and lots of other weird random shit. Thanks for all you hard work these excellent videos highlight the grim reality of what our fellow citizens have to endure.
Thanks, appreciate the kind words. I've seen a lot worse than Barton St since I've been on my travels making videos, but it's certainly one of - of not the - worst roads in Gloucester.
I am now retired, I was for 30 years a Doctor in Barton Street. The Surgery, Bartongate Surgery, is the building with the red beam coming forward. The building was previously the Labour club. My partners and I had it knocked down and converted to a Doctors Surgery. I really enjoyed being a GP in Barton Street. There are a lot one good people in Barton Street and the surrounding area. I think one of the structural problems is that the pavements are narrow and the traffic heavy , this is the nature of the Street. It would not be possible to pedestrianise the area. I think that as long as it takes heavy car traffic , Barton Street area will have problems . I have never felt in danger walking down Barton Street. But I did retire from Bartongate Surgery in 2015 and I am informed that things have deteriorated since then.
Thanks for your comment; first of all I want to thank you for giving such a long service in such an important role to the area, and I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed your time on Barton St. There is no denying the area has it's problems. I'm not sure how much it's slid over recent years, but there is a always good and bad and I've met some awesome people in the area!

I went to live in Gloucester in 1984 and was encouraged by a headline in local paper, on front page -'Man arrested for being drunk in charge of a bicycle'. I heard about Barton St later on, when the Walls Ice cream factory had started employing a lot of 'certain demographic'. 40 years later I married a Chinese lady who wanted to go and live in Barton St, as property prices were so cheap, until I persuaded her to move to Cheltenham. I heard somewhere, that a lot of barber shops are used for money laundering. Maybe just an urban myth.
I had the misfortune of taking a wrong turning in Wolverhampton two years ago and really was scared because two separate people followed me after I took cash from a machine . Birmingham was even worse even though it was a three minute walk from the City Centre . I'm 70 year's old and had to ask 2 security guards for help until my friend came to rescue me .

I have lived in this area for over 30 years, its a lovely place to live, it has problems like most place, one major problem is there are no youth clubs anymore for the youth to go to and that also mean less role models for the youth another is Gloucester city council dosen't look after the area, they just gave 50 million to the town center to be done up (Barton St. Exclude), built the quays, spent over a million on a stupid bike system that they have now decided not to use, thats the problem the council waste money in thing gloucester dosen't need and will not spend it what gloucester needs, truly sad. I will say alot of the crime comes from people who don't live in Barton St, as its central many people go there with their badness. Bless
Hi, thanks for you comment - I agree, all the classic signs of a council forgetting about an area. I bet you've seen some changes over 30 years! Glad to hear you enjoy living in Barton, that puts a smile on my face.
At least most of the shops are occupied unlike many other secondary shopping streets in the UK. It's always had a dodgy reputation amongst the locals mind. The main problem is finding somewhere to park. I feel perfectly safe walking there in the daytime but I'd be more cautious at night. I think this video makes it appear a lot worse than it is. Snowflakes beware. I'd suggest you walk down it and film rather than driving through presumably with your doors locked.
I have no problem walking down Barton in the day when I'm not filming, but I've already found that walking around holding a camera provokes reactions from some people. Plus personally, I'm not a fan of the slower walking videos, I wanted to make something quicker as YT users have notoriously short attention spans, but I'm going to try both walking and driving videos in the future to see which gets the best reception - thanks for dropping in.
You say that but 6 of them recently got closed down for being drug fronts 🤣 sorry UK explored but it turns out most of them weren't selling international food at all

They are starting to get the area around the station together and they really need to tackle the centre. But if you throw money at every area seen to be struggling and gentrify it you push out those that can no longer afford to stay there and this makes the problem worse in another way.
Yeah, I'm against gentrifying areas for sure. It's sad when multi-generation families have to move out of an area. But they need to make these areas safer, especially as it's so close to the city center where tourists can easily roam on foot.
