    Culls aren't always rubbish! I once got a bag of 6 wild green swordtail culls in a local fish club raffle. Took them home, grew them out, entered one in a public all breed tropical fish show, and took home Best of Show trophy with that beautiful creature!

    I got some lowest grade cherry shrimp (completely translucent) for free lol. I put them in a trial tank, and several months later voila! I have blacks, browns, reds, more colorless etc. It wasfun to see all that genetics play out and realize I can keep shrimp without heater or filter in front of a window.

      @Fishtory  6 місяців тому +1

      Right on! They were probably culls from a once decent red line, in that case. Thats a great way to do it!

    Making your costomers give you there prise is a good way to make them feel stupid if they don't know the market. Ether they go low and feel greedy or they go mid hi and feel that they payed to much. In my mind the seller should allways give the price there willing to sell for.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  4 роки тому +3

      I totally agree if they don't know the market. I was mostly referring to making a barter / trade or package deal with other hobbyists when i said that, i suppose.
      I guess Ive always given a 3 price structure based on grade A, B and culls ... usually selling mostly 60% B's and maybe 30% A's
      With 10% wanting culls for kids or nature scapes.

    I had bought a group of cherry shrimp at a local auction. Put them in a tank with wild type guppies and let the water go green. When I cleaned the tank the last few days I ended up with low grade cherries and a lot of solid dark red/brown and not much of anything between those colors. Apparently the dark red/browns are called chocolate . Waiting a few days to see if they lighten up in color now they aren't in green water.

      Yes, and yes .... i want to see what they mix like for starters, but also- all the female red riding hoods are already pregnant via their own strain of males... and 2 painted fires are also pregnant via male painted fire males (before putting them all together). • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 роки тому +1

      Usually the store will pay 1/3 or 33% to 25% (1/4th) of what it retails for in USA stores. So a 10 dollar fish whole sales for $3.40 to 2.50 depending on the store, the fish and demand v. Supply.
      If you can sell straight to consumers you only need to breed 30% as many fish hehe

    Hello, I need some advice please. I have been keeping red cherries in a 38 gallon for about two years And they bred like crazy and I never sold any. Had thousands of them and recently been selling a lot. How should I make sure I don’t oversell so the colony keeps breeding? When I feed they come out and cover almost all the bottom of a 38 gallon. Probably about 300-500 would be my guess Am I safe to keep selling 20-30 at a time a every week or so?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 роки тому +4

      Yeah I would say, always keep 75 to 100 adults... and sell the juvenile/ almost grown ones... (inevitably you'll miss some and they'll become adults too) then you also cut down on competition between siblings... 2month old vs 4 month old shrimp will fight over food a lot. You've undoubtedly seen them 'steal' food and swim off with it lol.
      But with that size colony...as long as you have quite a few plants or stone pile hiding spots, you'll Likely never run out, at the 20 to 40 a month count... if you can, sell em to consumers and not stores ..you make so much more and it sort of self-limits how much you depleat the colony.
      Best of luck!

    I hope this doesn't cause to much debate but has anyone considered using the culls of the culls for a poultry supplement? Like injured, really bad color, bad moults ect? Right now I think the price of earth tone mixes/ wild type, whatever are still so much that the bio availability still wouldn't be cost effective, but it would also be a handy tool for selective breeding if you didn't have the extra tank space or readily available market.

      Yes...it lets you see color consistency much better (blotches or rili / line genes)...also if you turn the lights out and then check at like 3am- theyll be the lease vivid and for 20 minutes or so they wont color back up usually

    Will the eggs drop down in the undercarriage even if they don't get fertilized?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 роки тому +3

      No... or rather, not for more than a few hours likely. Usually neocaridina shrimp and caridina shrimp have a male insert a little donut shaped sperm pack at the exit of the female's ovaduct lines... so thats the "🔑key " that will unlock her saddle...so then she releases her saddled eggs and each one has to rub on the donut of sperm, thus before exiting her ovaduct tubes she will have already made sure they're fertilized...usually if an egg js misshapen or damaged, she'll just lay it on the ground or eat it for the vitamins and calcium.

Spoken with a few local fish stores near me and they expressed interest in buying shrimp from breeders with the same water parameters as them & their customers (no brainer). No problem. And good luck to you too! I do also do skype/zoom/phone consulting about aquariums/aquarium business and aquatic plants + marketing, logo work and branding (I've combined all my jobs into one consulting specialty haha).
      Id you have a question or two ill always try my best to answer them. But if you want to chat in depth just let me know and we can set something up. There's a lot of ways to save money with shrimp (like filtration or heaters + much more) , and other things that you should actually spend decent money on (substrates and additives to water if anything other than neocaridina or malawa shrimp).
      Also, id just warn you, that you probably won't be able to beat asian sources for neo shrimp (if your lfs can find them currently, that is!). Selling to individuals is where it is at, for sure. And bundling things like catapa leaves and bacter ae bought in bulk and portioned out as samples etc.
      I have a shrimp playlist with more info and hope you may find some more of what you're looking for, while you scour youtube.
