You have a very nice process for these burp cloths. I like the serger method. Your idea to quilt or topstitch across the thirds is a very good idea, too.
If I could share my excitement right now, I'd gladly do so. I just made my first Burp Cloth and It actually worked. The excitement is real Jan. I was the one at school that refused wholeheartedly to sew. I was the one always sat at the back of the classroom in disgrace. Oh, if my sewing teacher could see me now!!!! Mrs Scott, you would be so proud of me. Jan, you are an amazing teacher. Hubby thinks Ive gone nuts, as in 32 years of marriage, Ive refused to sew a button on his shirts, sew a hem on his trousers, etc etc. Im having so much fun right now with your channel. Many Many Thanks, hun xx
I am so happy I found your video. I just found out that Im gonna be a Grandma for the first time and really wanted to start making things for my daughter. Very beginner level skills so this is perfect. Just adds to my excitement. Thank you. ❤❤❤
Wonderful! I'm posting a new video in the morning on how to make a waterproof baby changing mat. Super easy project. Be sure to check it out. How fun to sew for grandkiddos.❤️
I learned to sew by making burp rags with my church’s women's group as a service project to benefit a local NICU. They were a perfect learning project as the pattern we used was very forgiving, and all the seams are just straight seams. I have gone on to teach elementary school aged girls to sew with the same project. When my grandson was born a few years ago I of course made a huge stack for him. Much to my delight, this little baby loved the soft flannel rags and they became his security blankie/comfort item that he took everywhere he went with him! And the best part? He had at least a dozen of these burp cloths and was happy with any one of them, so no inconsolable child crying if his one comfort item gets lost as he had the whole stack to choose from at anytime. The pattern used by this UA-camr is very similar to the pattern I first learned, except I would say her version is a little nicer than my everyday pattern. I would use this pattern when making burp cloths as a shower gift, for example. Great tutorial!
I'm not a full on beginner but still love the complete instructions. The red arrow is perfect, could enjoy more. No sound, except your calming voice creates a perfec learning environment. Thank you for all of your time and talent ❤️
Very clear tutorial! I’ve found that it’s easier to fold the edges of the opening to the inside if I leave it in the center of the seam and not at the corner. Otherwise, this is exactly how I make burp cloths.
A little trick before you turn inside out .... where the opening is at > press the unsewn seam allowance open by pulling tight from backtack to backtack & it will automatically form the straight edge of the seam then press with iron. Now turn it right side out & the seam naturally falls into place with less fudging & burning your fingers tips-lol
I have been craft sewing for about a year. Your instructions are straightforward and so easy to follow. Thank you...I feel like I can actually do this skill after watching a couple of your videos.
I definitely pre wash all my fabrics prior to cutting and sewing . Cottons, flannels , terry cloth all shrink at different percentages. If the fabric is not pre washed, when the receiver washes and throws them in the dryer, you can have a distorted rectangle. I wash all my burp clothes, iron them and place them in a plastic bag ready to be used by the new mom. I also place a note indicating ready to use.
I am so new at sewing anything. But Just found out I am going to be a grandma sometime at the end of December and cannot wait to sew my own baby blankets, burp cloths and more. Thank you for making so simple:)
Great tutorial. Very simple, yet cute and functional. I have made about 30 -40 burp clothes the last two years, and I love the idea of using terry cloth or towels for the backing. Also, running just the two stitching lines as fold lines is brilliant! Thanks! Am making more burp clothes soon for a new baby.
I don't know if this is a thing, but I harvest towels and linens from Goodwill regularly for fabric. It's used, it's soft, it's CHEAP. I bleach the crap out of them and it's perfect fodder for a project like this without buying a perfectly good towel. God bless your poor thumb. :) Nice, concise video. Thank you so much.
I love your tutorials. You explain each step so well. Your tutorial on self binding baby blanket it great! I think it is the best one I have seen. If you aren’t precise with that blanket it will not turn out well and you show each step so well. Great job!
I am totally new at sewing. I just watched the mitered corner baby blanket and you talked about the burp clothes and how I could you leftover fabric to make them. Can't wait for store to open so I can get started. I have a 3 day old great neice that I will make them for. Woo woo so excited 😁
At the age of 60 I’m going to be a granny for the first time. I’m very excited to see your tutorial. Guess what I’ll be making a few of very soon..... thank you
I have two friends who are expecting grandbabies--one set of twins, so 3 gifts. I am a knitter, but the showers are within a couple weeks and I don't have time to donthe blankets I wanted to do. then it hit me--burping cloths! After watching several videos which were super complicated and not detailed, I came across yours. Thank goodness! I love the idea of using towels as a backing. I am not a sewist, but I know enough to be dangerous. This is a great tutorial! Thank you!
OK, first of all, the project is great and your instructions are so clear. I have some new parents who will be receiving some of these from me in the near future :) Secondly, your masking tape idea is golden! I plan to loosely roll the scraps of tape into ball, sticky side out to use as a lint remover on my sewing area and my clothes when I'm done sewing for the day.
I loved loved your tutorial for making a self binding blanket and so detailed descriptions. now I can make a blankets for gifts:) Please continue to do more youtube tutorials as they are super helpful!!!
Hi Jan, I stumbled across your wonderful instructional video for sewing baby burp cloths and you make life so simple for us off and on sewers. I sew when I can find time or when I find a neat item to sew and with two young mothers in the neighborhood getting ready to have baby girls, I started digging through by flannel material and I have some really beautiful pieces to finally make something to give away. I like the terry cloth towel idea and will go pick up a few tomorrow and get busy. This is very kind of you to share your easy to follow project. Thank you!
THANK YOU! I made my first batch on my serger and i used the suggested needle for my topstitching and the masking tape was an excellent idea as well. God bless and keep it coming. See you on your next class.
02-20-21; Good gosh, Jan, these came out so nice. I can't wait to make a few myself today! TFS and I'm looking forward to seeing how you made the tags. Gotta have 'em...thanks again!
Hi I just ran across and watched your video and subscribed. Great tutorial for a beginner like me. I also just brought that same Viking sewing machine. Thanks for the easy to follow video. Will be watching for more!👏👏
I learned the hard way that pins work much better than clips for this and I also found that using a walking foot helped keep the terry from moving around. I loved the tutorial, thank you! Where did you get your beautiful fabric?
New subscriber here from Australia just came across your channel love the way u teach I am a newbie to sewing so this burp cloth looks like a good place to start thank u for explaining it so fully now to go and make my own
I love your videos and I learned a lot from you I made baby blankets and for the burp cloth can you use flannel instead of terry towel fabric thank you
This is great. I have a new great grandchild coming in September. As soon as I find out if it is a girl or a boy, I am going to make some of these up. Great idea and I love that you used towels for one side!!! Many thanks for the great video!
It's always a good idea to pre-wash fabric before sewing if you can. That way everything shrinks the same when washed. These burp clothes, I usually don't pre-wash, but it's totally up to you. If both the top and bottom fabrics are the same fiber content, like cotton, you should be ok to not pre-wash.
You want to avoid getting a towel that is really plush or thick. The basic towels at Walmart work great. I find towels are less expensive than buying yardage of that fabric.
I like to make mine the shape of figure 8 bcoz at any given time you’ll burp the baby, put on your shoulder & If you have a colicky baby like I did , it’s a must ! I’m not criticizing your burp clothes bcoz there again you’ll still need them to clean up ! Backup’s always come in handy ! I like the size I always make mine big !
Jan, I love this tutorial. Do you pre-wash your fabrics? I normally don't because I am worried the receiver may think the fabrics are used, what are your thoughts?
Where do you order your "Made By" tags from?
I actually make my own. I have a video tutorial showing how to make them. They really are quite easy to make. Check out the video tutorial HERE. ua-cam.com/video/bn2GxH3--QA/v-deo.html

Why didn't you use a disappearing marker instead of tape? I'm wondering 🤔

I’ve made a few of these a long time ago. I do want to try making them with flannel and terry cloth. Maybe there’s a down side to that?
I make them all the time with flannel and terry cloth.
What is the third fabric yardage toweling inexpensive towels and a third I didn’t get the name of it?
Terry cloth
I usually wash everything before start cutting? Did you do that, too?
Please do a tutorial on using a serger for the burp cloths.
I will put that on my list
@@JanHowell Thank You!
Just found this video! Love it. What size towel do you buy? How many can you get from a yard? Which is better yardage or towel? Thanks.

Could you use flannel instead of terry cloth? Just for extra softness? I'll become a great aunt in December and I've got lots of baby gifts to make!
yes, flannel is a great choice.
The burp cloths are very nice. Did you know the finished edges of fabric is called selvage or selvedge not salvage?
Yes lol. Have learned since how to pronounce it correctly
Great tutorials
Excellent! I enjoyed your tutorial thank you so much for sharing.
Very cool idea!! Love your ideas!
Thanks so much! 😊
Love your tutorial so quick and beautiful ❤️🦊👏
Thanks so much 😊
This is fantastic. Can you se flannel as well?
Yes. I do all the time.
Thank you, love your projects, im gonna make some this weekend.
I have made these before but they had a gentle curve in the middle. This fits close to the person's neck while burping the baby on their shoulder.
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
What size terry towel did you buy and how many burp cloths do you get out of it?
Jan, I love this tutorial. Do you pre-wash your fabrics? I normally don't because I am worried the receiver may think the fabrics are used, what are your thoughts?
If it is a gift, I don't wash the fabric first for the same reason. Especially for projects like this where there will be minimal shrinkage anyway.
