I have been quilting for a few years now and I love working with flannel. This is the first time I've ever heard how to make sure it is straight...I love this video!
I hadn't sewn anything in well over 20 years and when my daughter had our first grandchild, I was terrified by the proposition of making a baby quilt on a new machine. It took me months to actually start one, even after I collected yards and yards of adorable fabric. After watching dozens of videos, I was nearly in tears when I finally began, but constructed the entire quilt step-by-step with your help in this video, rewinding again and again to make sure I did it right. Well, it turned out way better than okay, and I'm looking forward to lots of other sewing projects. You're the best, Jan--thank you for your reassuring videos! 💖
Jan, I am relatively new to sewing (late in life ;) this is hands down the best instructional video I’ve ever watched (and I’ve watched a lot of them!). Thank you for taking the time to show and demonstrate every single step…for us newbies it is SO helpful. I’m a “visual” learner and showing each step in this video was a game changer. It was also a great education in squaring up fabric…which is a challenge on its own. I’m so grateful I came across this…it has helped more than you’ll ever know.
I took home Ec in high school but my teacher sewed all my projects! I never learned to sew. I bought a sewing machine and I am going to teach myself by watching UA-cam.
I used your video to make some blankets for my grand daughter. 2+ years later and these are still her favorite blankies! They make the perfect gifts and are a joy to make. Thank you for the video!!!
I love these blankets! I have made several for baby showers and the reactions of the mothers-to-be are always huge smiles! They get used for a couple of years!
Ok so I said I would make one because I had to make another baby gift for another new mom in our church. I made this one. It was so easy to do. The hardest part is the cutting and making sure it's square, I don't have all your fancy tools. Just a pair of scissors and a square for dry wall (hey it works) It turned out so well and was so easy to put together. Your instructions are great!! Thanks again
came here to say, I used this tutorial in 2020 and now am using it again to make the exact blanket using the exact fabric I got back then. Yes they still have it . !! thank you.
I learned so much about prepping your fabric and getting straight cuts. Yours is the first tutorial I’ve seen that covers that. Thank you for that. Makes the difference in a really good looking finished project and how it will wash nicely. All instruction was clear, detailed (love) and so helpful. Have subscribed and look forward to more of your videos.
I really appreciate the details you give, for example, how to square off the fabric pieces. I think it's the best tutorial out there. Practical and common sense.
But if you look closely at the polkadots her fabric is not square Another reason to stay away from polkadots or anything with a lot of lines unless you know how to tug at the fabric to straighten those grain lines
I just made one following your instructions! 💖😊 I found the most difficult part was cutting the fabric perfectly square. Otherwise it was a breeze to make. Full of tips and tricks no one else shares. Thank you so very much Jan for the best instructions for the self binding blanket! 😍☺️💖🥰
Thank you soooo much. I struggled for hours watching another person’s video on this and failed. Following your instructions it came out perfect. You explain things clearly and it’s perfect for self taught semi beginners. Thanks again.
Jan I love this pattern I have made 17 so far but it takes me an hour. Thank you for sharing this pattern - it has endless possibilities. I just sent 15 to a neonatal ICU in Nigeria.
@@JanHowell This was most helpful. Thanks! May I just bring up a pet peeve of mine? It's a selvage, NOT a "salvaged edge." It's derived from "self edge": the edge that was original to the woven cloth, as opposed to the edge that somebody cut from the length.
Many years ago I was taught to tale a coner and the the diagonal cocner and pull. It straighteded the fabric every time. That was back in the 60s and I still do ir that way.
What a great idea. I've never seen this before. I make toddler and baby blankets for the church camp to raffle off to make money for the camp. This will be faster making them ❤
Viewers, PLEASE do not leave your rotary cutter open in between cuts as is shown here. Always CLOSE it because it is much too easy to slice yourself by wrongly grabbing the sharp end (especially if the cutter gets covered with fabric like it did in this video), drop it blade down on your foot (ask me how I know this) or otherwise thinking it's closed up when it isn't
This project is always a delightful surprise. A friend showed me how to do it a few years ago and I completely forgot the steps...it's not intuitive.....so I really appreciated your step-by-step instructions. I got the same delight watching it turn out for you.
I've watched this video. I understand it. I think i could do it but honestly i still think this is some form of magic. I just can't get my head around how someone came up with this method. Amazing!
Love, luv luv making these as gifts. I tweaked your instructions by ladder stitching the opening & then stitching in the ditch all the way around , including the mitered corners so that it doesn’t shift & looks mitered from the backside too.
Hi Jan, you are precious in all you share within your sewing videos. I am a youngish sewer of 73. I do work in a well known fabric store here in Oregon. Great video. Good and close-up shots, plus you repeat the instructions at least twice. Oughtta be able to create some real cuties with this simple pattern. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
Thanks Jan, I read many explanations re: this blanket, but yours is, by far, the easiest directions to follow. Thanks for you precise directions and clear video.
Just finished sewing along with you ( with your super clear instructions 😃) ...I’m sooo pleased with the end results. Thank you so much Jan 💐😘. Off to get more fabric now 😂🤣
I have been sewing for more than 50 years and this mitered corner baby blanket was so easy with you detailed instructions! Never tried mitered corners before. Thank you so much for the very helpful tutorial!!!!!!
Thank you, thank you! I just made the first one and it is so cute, feels nice and thick. I'm making a few things for the second great grandchild due in Jan/Feb. I'm a beginning to maybe advanced beginner sewing enthusiast. I had no trouble following the directions and it just turned out lovely. Again, thank you.
I belong to a quilting group who make quilts for Project Linus. We have just been given a whole lot of flannel fabric so this video is perfect!! Thank you, such easy to follow instructions.😊🐝
I'm a newbie and this was just dumbfounding to me until you got to the end of joining the last bit before you turned it inside out! WOW! Uh o--now ya done it. Pink polka dots really drew me in the first place and I'm so glad I watched the entire production. It turned out so fine! So brilliant. Can't wait to try this. May make a mug rug first just to get the hang of the idea. Thank you so so much. I wanted to make a suggestion for everyone who may not have considered this source of fabric. GOODWILL!! Their sheets and bedding sections have TONS of fabric to hoard/er-collect. :)
My sister has made 100's of the self binding blankets but she keeps the corners she cuts off and uses them to make half square triangle blocks and creates ANOTHER quilt !!!!
This was excellent! You made the mitered corners so simple to understand. Clear and concise, thank you so much ! I whipped one up in no time this morning and a burp cloth to match!
LOVE this blanket! I've looked at many binding blankets videos, but I think this is my favorite. Great pointers of how to straighten the fabric, and the importance of keeping the grain matching. Lovely tutorial! You are sweet sweet sweet, as your blankets are. Thanks from NH Jan!
Great easy to follow tutorial! The safety pin tip is excellent to keep the straight and cross grains in the right place. I've made a lot of these for my guild, and have witnessed that they frequently distort when washed. I now sew an "X" from corner to corner to hold the layers together. BTW, I'm watching this in 2024. Thank you!
Just now (2022) seeing this tutorial and I have to thank you! I have made several of these in the past, but your directions are so clear, I am happy to have a "refresh" before making one for my new grandnephew! Thank you.
Thank you for this detailed tutorial! I watched it about 4 times before I attempted to make one but it paid off. I am so proud that I made it. You’re the best! Thank you. 💕
Thank you so much Jan I really really enjoyed watching you create this self binding blanket. Absolutely beautiful and gorgeous too. Any new Mother would really love and appreciate one of these. I have to make a receiving blanket for my grand daughters first baby. My first great grand baby. I can’t wait to make it. I love your videos to learn to sew things
I absolutely love your tutorial!! I have watched someone else and I completely sewed the corners wrong and cut off the end wrong. You emphasized just where you needed special attention. Thank you 👍❤️ I am a subscriber ‼️‼️
We have a new baby boy in the family. I haven't sewn in years, and this little guy gives me incentive to handmake gifts for him. This receiving blanket will be a loving gift to give to the little one. Thank you so much for your tutorial. It has refreshed my memory of how to prepare and sew fabric. The blanket you made is beautiful!
Great tutorial! I just found you and love the blanket. You made me nervous leaving your rotary cutter open while you were smoothing and rearranging the fabric. I've had a bad cut from one, so I close it every time I lay it down. Thanks for sharing this blanket with us!
Love this! The technique is like sewing a french seam pillowcase, you think it is never going to work until you try it and then become obsessed with making them. Thank you so much for this video. You are an Awesome teacher.
I’ve Made several out of high quality flannel. Mixing the prints. So much easier than the way I was doing the binding. People love getting a handmade gift. Thank you !!
Thank you for taking the time to show the measurements and how to do it so I can understand. I have watched several other videos on this and you were the one to go over this with a top view and take the time to show how to lime everything up. I have tried this method a few times and failed. I FINALLY got it after watching your video. 🎉 Thank you so very much.
I usually have a hard time watching a 35 minute video but this was so worth it. I'm glad I watched it ALL. Tons of great tips. I love how precise you are. Excited to try it!
I wish I had found you 2 years ago when I started sewing! You are extremely gifted. Thank you for your tutorials, now to just catch up on all I have missed!
OH MY GOODNESS!! I have been sewing for about 50 years. Totally forgot this technique! Thank you as I bust out my sewing machine and make a bunch for 2 more grandbabies coming! Subscribed!!
Thank you so much for this video. I just made my first baby blanket and it turned out great. I have been using your instructions for burp cloths for awhile now...thank you also for that great tutorial.
You are an excellent teacher! Getting ready to make some blankets and burp clothes for great granddaughter due in 2 weeks. Excited to use your methods.
Way to go and Wonderful! If you're on Instagram, I would love to see your blankets on there. just tag a photo to #youmakeitsimple Isn't sewing fun!!!! Have a wonderful week.
MY WORD! how cute!!! and I love the fabrics! I must know where you got them from. I learned so much about putting the correct ends together from you. Now maybe they wont twist a bit. :) Thank you for the wonderful tutorial.
Jan I would ALWAYS pre-wash flannel... they all are woven so differently and they definitely shrink at different degrees... Also, Young mothers will want that chemical sizing washed out before they can use the blankets. I have two granddaughters and another on the way and I have made loads of these blankets...I always pre-wash and you fresh Press on them and they look beautiful....
WOW. Im new to sewing (at 57 years old), and ive got to say this is THE BEST video ive seen so far. You have so much patience and I love how you demonstrate absolutely everything. Even cutting the fabric (which is still confusing to me) and pressing. So so happy I found you. Im off to have a look at the rest of your you tube videos. I foresee a day in front of the computer instead of the office where I should be today!!!! New subscriber here. Actually could you please tell me if these can be done with Fleece? I have some of that, but no Flannelette. Thanks so much x
Very clear tutorial. (Though it is the “selvage edge” rather than the “salvaged edge”.) I so appreciate you talking about matching the selvage edges with both pieces as that makes a definite difference when it is washed for the first time, so both front and back shrink at the same rate. Also getting the edges square. It’s frustrating to work on if the fabric isn’t square. Too many tutorials don’t mention that at all and sewists wonder why the finished project looks wonky.
Thanks for your easy to follow instructions. Wondering why does it matter to sew from the center to the 1/4 edge in both directions and not just all the way in one direction? I've made many of these darling blankets. Your ironing tips will make mine so much better. Thanks!
I do the same that she does, start from the middle outwards b/c by the time you get to the edge, it stretches a bit, so much better to do half the length each time.
New subscriber, will check out the whole channel. Although sewing for nearly 50 years, there is always more to learn. Impatient wannabe granny in waiting!
That is super cute ... I’ve been sewing for 40 years, self taught, and I never knew about matching the selvage edges ... you CAN teach an old dog new tricks 😉 I do mostly quilting nowadays ... I love that “J” tag ... mind if I ask where you get those? I’d like a simple way to mark my quilts like that
Me College I did not understand what she did at all. Is this normal for new people learning? Your self taught can you advise me. I'm 63 and been trying to learn decades n always give up . I'd really want to learn. Appreciate your help and any advice
@@hippiechicksmomma8691 i've been sewing for about 50 years (i'm 64 :) and at first it was like, what did she do? i believe if you watch it each step, and do each step as she does it, take your time, watch each step more than once if needed, you'll be able to do it :) . if you have any old sheets or whatever, practice with those. i would definitely advise investing in a cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter. it makes cutting straight lines so much easier, quicker, and more precise.
Has anyone done this for a rectangle shape instead of a square? It seems like you just add the 5 inches to the size of the smaller piece, no matter the shape? The first one I tried this on, was a silk and a Minky. Two very hard pieces to match! Didn't come out perfect, but we worked it out. Not the best, but its so comfy anyway.
I want to thank you for this video. I haven't sewn for a few yrs and never without a pattern until this. I made 3 blankets over a matter of days. They are beautiful, not perfect, but perfect enough. I wish I could show you a picture. I will be making more. A lesson learned, to always us just flannels. I used flannel and a cotton quilting fabric, had an issue with a little slippage but nothing too great. Loved this!
Wonderful! Sounds like you did a great job, especially for not sewing for a while. I would love to see some pictures. If you are on Instagram, you could tag a few photos to #youmakeitsimple. Keep sewing and have a wonderful day!
@@suebean3873 Are you still able to iron on it if you are using minky fabrics? I read on another tutorial that you should not but don’t know if that’s really an issue. TIA!
Can you put batting inside?
Yes, you could, however, you'll need to either quilt it or tie to keep the batting in place.
@@JanHowell Thankyou xx
You made something so beautiful look so easy. Thank you
@@JanHowell you really don’t need it and like Jan replied, you’ll have to tie or quilt it to keep them together.

Thanks for the tip! That is quite careless of me.
@@JanHowell thanks Jan!
Love this! The technique is like sewing a french seam pillowcase, you think it is never going to work until you try it and then become obsessed with making them. Thank you so much for this video. You are an Awesome teacher.
Thanks. You are so kind!
Awesome tutorial; I'm going to follow this video when I make baby blankets this winter. Thanks for sharing 😊
You’re welcome 😊
Great, easy to follow video! Thank you for your clear, detailed instructions.
You are welcome!
So simple. Thanks. Only thing I would add is a bit of top stitching in the way of quilting the top piece to the back piece.
I’ve Made several out of high quality flannel. Mixing the prints. So much easier than the way I was doing the binding. People love getting a handmade gift. Thank you !!
Yes, handmade gifts are the best!!!!
Watching this come together was like watching magic!
You are an excellent teacher and the camera views are perfect. Thank you for doing this.
Thank you! You are so very welcome.
I'll be putting less satin binding on my blankets now! Thanks for the great tutorial !
Souns eazy loved it
Jan - this is a great tutorial and is clearly explaining the mitered corners for a beginner like myself! Thank you so much for posting this:)
You are so welcome!
I love your tutorial AND the finished blanket. Thank you so much for sharing your skills! ♥️
You are so welcome!
You are so welcome!
I usually have a hard time watching a 35 minute video but this was so worth it. I'm glad I watched it ALL. Tons of great tips. I love how precise you are. Excited to try it!
Thanks for watching. Le me know how it goes.
I wish I had found you 2 years ago when I started sewing! You are extremely gifted. Thank you for your tutorials, now to just catch up on all I have missed!

A really nice way of presenting. Clear and precise.
Lesley Janet thank you!😉
So happy I found this tutorial! I think I finally got it
You came up as a UA-cam suggestion. I really learned from this clear video. I subscribed
I feel blessed to have seen your video FIRST. This is the easiest way to bind my blankets. Thank you so very much.
Glad it was helpful!

You are so welcome, and thank you!

This is my FIRST sewing project ever! I love it! And i am making a second one today as well as your burp pads after that!!!
You are so welcome. Let me know how it goes.
OMG!!! It is like a sewing a blanket miracle!!!! Thank you!!!!!
You are so welcome. LOL
Same here, preshrinking eliminates distortion of any project over its lifetime. Any experienced seamstress would agree.
What is fresh press?
DAH! I got it!
Your video was great. You demonstrated every step . Thank You very much.😀
You are so welcome
Hi Lorraine, yes you can make these with fleece. I have a tutorial showing you how. Here is the link
ua-cam.com/video/Dpxx4pO_Vac/v-deo.html
Very clear tutorial. (Though it is the “selvage edge” rather than the “salvaged edge”.) I so appreciate you talking about matching the selvage edges with both pieces as that makes a definite difference when it is washed for the first time, so both front and back shrink at the same rate. Also getting the edges square. It’s frustrating to work on if the fabric isn’t square. Too many tutorials don’t mention that at all and sewists wonder why the finished project looks wonky.
Glad it was helpful! And yes I’ve learned the correct pronunciation lol
Genius! Can't wait to make one. New grandma here! Great tutorial...so detailed. Thanks! Just subscribed.
Wow you are a super teacher! My first sewing project turned out great!!! Thank you ☺️
Wonderful! Thanks Carol. Isn't sewing fun. Keep at it.:)
This was so helpful, thank you so much!!! I just ordered my fabrics and can't wait to get started!
How did it turn out?
Excellent tutorial. Can’t wait to make some. Thanks Jan. You are obviously a very good teacher.
You are so welcome and kind
Thanks for your easy to follow instructions. Wondering why does it matter to sew from the center to the 1/4 edge in both directions and not just all the way in one direction? I've made many of these darling blankets. Your ironing tips will make mine so much better. Thanks!
I do the same that she does, start from the middle outwards b/c by the time you get to the edge, it stretches a bit, so much better to do half the length each time.
New subscriber, will check out the whole channel. Although sewing for nearly 50 years, there is always more to learn. Impatient wannabe granny in waiting!
That is super cute ... I’ve been sewing for 40 years, self taught, and I never knew about matching the selvage edges ... you CAN teach an old dog new tricks 😉
I do mostly quilting nowadays ... I love that “J” tag ... mind if I ask where you get those? I’d like a simple way to mark my quilts like that
Thanks Collette. Glad you were able to learn something new. I make my own tags. Perhaps that could be an upcoming tutorial. :)
Jan Howell ... I hadn’t heard, so I ended up ordering them from someone in Argentina ... would LOVE to see a tutorial on it though.

I did not understand what she did at all. Is this normal for new people learning? Your self taught can you advise me. I'm 63 and been trying to learn decades n always give up . I'd really want to learn. Appreciate your help and any advice
That's sooo cool and easy. Thanks for sharing.
Cute receiving blanket.
Thank you! 😊
I never knew about matching selvage edges either!
I didn't either. So helpful.
Easiest border baby blanket tutorial, great instructions 😊❤
Thanks so much 😊
i just love this!! don't you imagine this would also work with nice cotton knits?
Yes, cotton knits would be very nice.
I’ve made many with a nice soft cotton, and I’ve also used minky as well for the backing. They all worked out so nicely.
@@suebean3873 Are you still able to iron on it if you are using minky fabrics? I read on another tutorial that you should not but don’t know if that’s really an issue. TIA!
