    Thanks for this inspiring tutorial Andy! I'm 68 and live in a mountainous area...very tough to actually pedal uphill at my age and condition. But if I can add a kit like this to my bike and then ride the ridges by pedaling...a new world opens up. I can't really understand all the technical details...but I think our local bike shop could help me with the conversion. Thanks for sharing. I'm excited! :)

    Have just completed a conversion of this exact bike, trek marlin 5, 29er,
    Fitted a 1500w hubmotor, controller and display look the same,
    48V 21ah triangle battery,
    power is great,
    65kph on flat fully charged,
    40kph up an incline,
    30km range without pedalling, 60km range or so depending how much I help it by pedalling,
    And the bike handles great, although braking has been affected as it is now quite heavy,

      @NM-zb2mo 5 років тому +4

      I bought the kit from CSC bikes on eBay, the battery I purchased from Etario store on Aliexpress as it was cheaper,
      if I was doing it again I would get maybe a 1000w or 750w as I think they would be powerful enough,
      On full throttle with the 1500w motor the display shows over 2500w consumption, not good for range when you do that,

    A safety note: The brake disc bolts should only be tightened to the specified torque, which isn't high, only around 6.2Nm, about as tight as you can get with a normal Torx key without hurting your fingers - it should be a fingers action, not hauling on them with whole hand. Alternatively, just spend £20 on a torque wrench and set the torque with that, it's the right tool for the job (a battery drill isn't). If you "do them up really tight" you risk stripping the threads out of the alloy hub, as they're only tiny little bolts. This could just cause damage to wiring, or could cause a crash.
    The important bit is the thread locker (Loctite 243 or similar) - medium strength Loctite 243 would probably stop the bolts backing out even if you just did them up finger-tight. Do them up to the right torque with thread-locker and it will be fine. It doesn't have to be actual Loctite, there are other brands available from bike shops or Amazon, or you can buy bolts with it already in place. Most appropriate medium strength thread lockers are blue, don't be tempted to use the green "high strength" Loctite thinking it's "better" as it can stick the hub threads so well to the bolt that the aluminium strips out when you undo the bolts. Threadlockers are anaerobic glues, they set in the absence of air, so when you do the bolts up make sure you're ready to do them all up (star pattern) and complete the job reasonably quickly.

    Used this kit on a trek Marlin 6, few remarks:
    -There's no way you can fit it in under an hour, just tying up the cables properly cost me over 20 minutes😂
    -The triangle is a bit smaller, so it's a bit harder fitting the controller in there and some additional washers were needed to get the torque arm mounted.
    -I do recommend a seat post with a spring, going off road on a hardtail at high speeds will crush your crown jewels at the slightest bump in the road.

    Hi Andy, really fun video can I just offer up a couple of things, I know you mentioned the torque arms, make sure that people use them when they have aluminium frames and don't even go for a test ride before they fit them, steel frames should be fine but on aluminium you will crack them very easily if you don't use a torque arm, also if people want a front wheel motor on suspension forks you shouldn't even turn the wheel without a torque arm, someone I knew snapped his dropouts at standstill both sides when fitted to a suspension fork with no torque arms.
    Look at the kits provided by luna cycles, they use similar kits to you but they get the suppliers to fit really nice quick disconnect connectors to the power and the hall wires, I thought the days of Chinese ebike suppliers supplying those naff connectors were long gone but it seems not, you want the disconnect wires near the rear axle otherwise changing out the wheel if someone gets a puncture will be a nightmare with that screw in block? in the short term you could use 30A Anderson powerpole connectors, I have been using them for 10 years on my 40,000 mile ebike, I use a simple cheap 5 pin din audio jack for the hall sensors, little things like that make all the difference I think the 5 pin din was 50p from Maplins.
    This is a direct drive motor, can you test the hill climbing ability, I would be interested to know how it fares, I have been on the ebiking scene since 2000 and did dabble with supply all those years ago with Mark Higgon from Team Hybrid way back in 2006 and it was fun but it can be a PITA when stuff starts going wrong especially the batteries, dont go investing all your savings in to it mate, Im glad I kept it just as a hobby, i wish you the best of luck.

      Mike Pell hi, to be honest the kit arrived in a couple of days from modds ebike and had everything you needed other than the battery , which I had ordered separately from Germany and took just over a week to arrive. With a busy work schedule it’s been on the back burner for a bit ,but I’ve mounted the battery , fitted display and throttle and then realized that the connection between battery and controller were completely different . New connections arrived today ,along with a more heavy duty tyre from schwalbe,but unfortunately I’m feeling under the weather and had a coved test today at stansted and waiting on the results, so for now it’s just all sat there ready to be assembled,but I’m just too unwell to crack on. This is my first attempt at an ebike build so I’m expecting some issues but will let you know how it goes when completed. It’s a 1500w kit with a 48v battery so I’m expecting some serious speed.......we shall see.

      Just came by your comment, and as a fellow conversion kit rider myself, it sucks :) Ive had 500w in front for about two years now, and you need a wrench and Allen key to undo the nuts on the axle and the torque arm. It can be done by turning your bike upside down in the field, but you would always need the tools. For me, ive bought a fake bottle, like the toolbox ones, and keep the tools in there. Also invest in some durable tires like the 'glassproof' Schwalbe marathon plus type. They weigh slightly more, but since youre on an ebike, this is a non issue. My tire change PR is about 2 mins, but your mileage may vary.

    I just got my bike on the charger for the first time this year. I need to get my brake lights worked out soon, and I am considering changing the fork or rebuilding it along with the head tube cartridge and front brakes. The hope brakes don't seem to bite like I would like, but I haven't tried to tune them much.
    I really am thinking I want to do a low power setup that is bikeable for work commute. I am leaning towards a middrive for that, and may use my gt zaskar frame or start from scratch.

    That "tube stuff" is called spiral bind, or as we joke about with it..... "Pig tail"....... You could also take the screen and throttle wires down around the underside of the bottom bracket and up around the set post upright and put the bag under the saddle if the wires are long enough or up to where the bag can be put in the frame...... Well done Andy looks good, next you need to mount the paddle sensor and take off the throttle to make it a "bit" more road legal......

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  4 роки тому +2

      Cheapest bike in Halfords is the £899 Carrera vengeance ebike. It’s a 250W low power bike. The bike I built cost £400 for the Trek Marlin 5 bike which is already a better bike...and the kit costs £739.99 + import costs but this is a 1500-2000W kit with a 880wh battery and a lovely colour screen. The carrera cant touch it in terms of performance and range. If you went for the 250W kit to match the carrera then the cost would be about £1K, again it’s still better than the carrera...it’s great as an entry level bike and you want a turnkey ready to roll bike, but the quality....not so much!

    • @everydaysalvage
      @everydaysalvage 4 роки тому

    Hi Andy - great video - Maybe you could release a video on e-bike insurance theft claims. In this week BBC RIP OFF BRITAIN features how e-bike thefts are increasing and victims are not being compensated by their insurance companies for various reasons. For instance many house insurance claims fail because :-
    a) You haven't specifically listed the e-bike/s as a high value item on your house insurance.
    b) You haven't used your Insurance Company's SPECIFIED locks on your shed/garage and IN ADDITION THEIR specified bike
    anti theft cable/chain. Get their recommended anti theft shed locks AND anti theft devices IN WRITING.
    c) Some insurance companies will NOT meet the claim if you have left your e-bike in the shed/garage unattended for more
    than six hours. Most of us are away from home during the day at work for EIGHT HOURS.
    d) The theft occurred outside the boundary of your property.
    e) You forgot to renew your house insurance or failed to confirm your e-bike was on cover.
    E-bikes are expensive highly desirable items which can be thrown into a van in minutes and it's gone. They're easy and quick to sell on. If your e-bike is stolen you might like to check the likely avenues where the thief will advertise it. Thieves need to sell it cheap for a quick sale. Get rid of the evidence and get their next fix.
    I would :-
    1. Get a stamp kit and stamp out a number ( your post code ) somewhere on the bike where it can be seen. Heat the stamp and burn your post code on the plastic components/seat so if your e-bike is recovered by the Police you can prove it's your property.
    Buy and install a security camera that will alert your mobile phone when triggered by an intruder.
    I would buy a very small mobile phone ( they smuggle them into prisons - £30 ) and hide it possibly under the seat or make a plastic container and screw it on the bike so it looks like it might be part of the electrical system. It can be configured as a tracker.
    Insurance companies don't like paying out. It's their profit. It's your responsibility to make sure they are nailed down.
    Get every thing confirmed in writing.
