It just needs a rim that's designed to suit a large hub - the rim can be dimpled or fitted with special eyelets to accommodate the steeper spoke angles, but they don't bother on these cheap crap kits.
Compared to an e scooter which is a straight up tug if spotted by the wrong copper, what's the odds of getting hassle on this if being ridden sensibly, as in peddling and keeping the speed down? I'm guessing this could go under the radar quite easily?

I have had an old trek, I decided to make my own ebike with. My trek bicycle is the single track series 820 on a small 16 frame with 26" tires. ( Mountain bike) I removed the shifters for the gears and set it on a rider friendly gear setting, the chain is in the middle of both sprockets. I then upgraded my front fork to RockShox with disc brake mount. I also bought a universal adapter for the rear disc brake mount as this bike had rubber v brakes. Then I bought Shimano hydraulic disc brake kit. I bought a torque arm along with the violamart 1500 watt kit, rated for 48 volts. I then purchased a joyisi 52 volt 20ah triangle battery. ( This is safe for a 48 volt set up as the voltage drops as you ride the bike.) Let me just tell you folks I paid under $1,500 including the price of the bike. This setup will go 32 miles per hour with my fat ass weighing about 250 lbs. That's with full power, when you put it in 750 watt mode it will go 20 miles per hour. On full power I will get approximately 25 mile range traveling at 32 miles per hour, throttle only. When I put it in 750 watt mode I get approximately 50 miles throttle only. Now of course I do peddle, and usually travel in 750 watt mode. Which on average I get about 60-70 miles. I recently purchased a set of Continental smooth tires. I haven't installed them yet, but I feel I will get way better mileage as those tires will have less resistance. I'm also considering adding another battery pack that is installed on a back rack. The same company I bought my original battery sells a kit with a rack and battery. The bike will be heavy as hell but I would probably be able to double my range.
@@dayenayuba7580 the battery was 620.00 the kit last year sold for like 180-200. Hydraulic brakes were about 80.00 the torque arm was like $25. I also bought a suspension bike seat. I paid about $1,000 for the whole kit. And I paid about 500.00 for the bike. I ordered most of the parts from Amazon and some parts from eBay.
This is right up my street. Anyone rate these kits in nasty wet weather? That’s my only worry. Not the speed the electronics and warrantees are the worry. 👍🏼
Where I’m from there’s a road that comes off the mountain to town, pure downhill. when I was a kid on just a normal pedal bike I would reach speeds of about 80 - 100km an hour sometimes passing cars. The speed wobble was so bad it felt like the front wheel would just fly off any minute. Can’t wait to get a decent high powered ebike and go down that road again as an adult 😁

@@shaunmiller5170 in the USA an ebike is defined as having 750w or less and a top speed of 28mph or less depending on class. Class 1 - PAS Only cut off at 20mph Class 2 - PAS OR Throttle and cuts off at 20mph Class 3 - PAS only and cuts off at 28mph. Local laws may limit this further. Trek Marlin 5 - £400 + £800 for the ebike kit and the cost of the labour to build it. Lets just say the labours free, so £1,200, but no dealer warranty. I recognise you can go that fast on a regular bike if you are a good rider. The problem I see with this is any idiot will be able to go that fast in any road conditions. I might have been a bit too harsh I don't know. I hope I'll be proven wrong.
Short people or people who like to ride a smaller frame bike can get a kit where the battery goes on the back of the bike on a rack so you don't need a large frame this is what I did I'm 5'6 but I am 67 years old and I cannot get on a very large bike anymore so I got one that's 15 and 1/2 in from Crank to seat post and it's fine back battery works just as good.
I forgot to mention those project boxes are nice but my controllers that I have for my three bikes are two large for those black boxes to include the wiring also so I had to buy different enclosures I bought strong bicycle frame bags and they are slender but they work because you're able to put the wires in them
kudos. Thats not a bad starter kit there. I currently run a modified BBSHD @ 2kw via a phaserunner controller. I would like to see a higher end kit available though. Maybe one with a QS205? Other than a QS motor, I will stick with my mid drive.
Love the bike but you are breaking the law by riding it on the roads. 250w is the legal limit and at pedal assist (not pedelec). Not sure you should be promoting illegal use.
In what country? Also, 250w is insanely low. Legislation is the same as what you mentioned in Aus. Hopefully it will change to something more realistic in the not too distant future.
Jimmeh B I agree with you mate. That’s how it is in the uk unfortunately. You are allowed pedal assistance up to 15.5mph, anything above that is considered a motorbike/pedelec. Crazy I know.
I'd agree that for this bike you need disc brakes. Also a motorcycle licence, insurance, an MOT, VRM plate and a helmet. Good job on showing why eBikes need cracking down on, you Joey.
That was an amazing video pal, not just for the informative part that was pretty complete, but to ride with you full screen on my TV, was an experience of those videos they use to make to sell GoPro Cameras, you should think about to find some extra profit with them or another camera maker, because the adventure is yours, budy. Thank you
I've did an ebike with a conversion kit sold online for $188.00, a basic $88 bike from walmart and a lithium battery for nearly $243.. and its capable speed is almost 21 miles per hour.
If it can do 20 mph up a steep hill without pedaling that's nice, but as others have commented, you can hit 40mph down a hill on a bicycle without any motor
Fantastic e-bike! Only one thing I would change: the gears/front blade (coq wheel?). Cuz with 20 m ph you already can't keep up pedalling and whats the fun of that? I would love to go this fast but still pedal
*Can you put the hubmotor on the front? Im asking because Im missing a front wheel on a similar bike. So Im killing 2birds w/ 1 stone if I could put a hubmotor wheel on the front, it would save me about $120. Plus make build easier.*
Have you thought about doing a kit for a bike with 20x4 rims like the super 73 and similar bikes? Even better if you could supply a full bike or even the frame, loads about already that look similar but nothing next level with adjustable seat or suspension that upgradeable to very good quality parts should you want to.

I want a conversion for mountain biking. I need more power down low and only maybe 2-5 MPH, but with strong bursts of speed to make it up hills. Any suggestions?
Bought a broken 250W bafang middrive bike for 300 bucks, the driver and battery were rubbish. Swapped battery with 60A capable 20AH and that motor can easily take 1500-1600W contsant. Ive maxed it out at 2500W but it snaps chains bc its 10 speed and the chains cant really take the stress. Been riding it for half a year and onlw swapped 8 chains and 2 rear sprockets bc of the crazy torque. I have 52t in the front... 40-45mph but down hill it goes upto 60 i belive
highest I had this kit at on a flat is 38.4 but if you're already going at a normal speed and not just setting off it can easily fo 30 mph up steep hills

Tell me if wrong but the rear spokes looks like they are bend because the tork y 1500 w motor may be a solid aluminum wheel is better ?
It just needs a rim that's designed to suit a large hub - the rim can be dimpled or fitted with special eyelets to accommodate the steeper spoke angles, but they don't bother on these cheap crap kits.
Very informative. Made me realize i need like 1500whr battery and a 2000w motor to have fun. Im 132lb
Just found out about your channel, I am glad. I will enjoy and learn a lot from you.
This is the cleanest build I’ve seen on a trek. Unlike my Janky bmx build. But it’s a solid performer.

How much did you spend
@@dayenayuba7580 the battery was 620.00 the kit last year sold for like 180-200. Hydraulic brakes were about 80.00 the torque arm was like $25. I also bought a suspension bike seat. Merry Christmas mate 🎄
Can’t wait to get a decent high powered ebike and go down that road again as an adult 😁
how steep was it that you were getting up to 100kmh???
can you use this on MTB trails ?

I recognise you can go that fast on a regular bike if you are a good rider. The problem I see with this is any idiot will be able to go that fast in any road conditions. I might have been a bit too harsh I don't know. I hope I'll be proven wrong.
Yeah I rarely go above 25mph, but enjoy opening up when down empty paths. There are people willing to take big risks, but that isn’t me.
@@paulollerhead941 What kind of frame and Ebike conversion kit do you use to go that fast???

That’s a great looking bike you built !!!! Looks awesome and as if you bought it that way. Bravo from NY
I would want to mount the battery underneath the downtube (wheel clearance permitting). No frame fit issues and lower center of gravity.

I've did an ebike with a conversion kit sold online for $188.00, a basic $88 bike from walmart and a lithium battery for nearly $243.. and its capable speed is almost 21 miles per hour.
Hi, that was really cheap ! How has it performed over the last two years?
I use a freewheel set with 11t & 13t rings.
No Ghost Pedaling.
