  • Today I'm going to show you how to punch needle:) Huge thanks to today's sponsor 🙌🏻SKILLSHARE 🙌🏻 first 500 get 2 month free: skl.sh/shmoxd
Alot of people had been tagging me and telling me to try out the Magic Embroidery Pen like that one.. But after reading some reviews and talking to some people, the ultra punch seemed like the best punch needle.
I'll put the links to all the material a little lower here in the description:)
The kit that I got came with an extra spring, 2 extra needle tips, and 2 of the threaders.
First thing your going to do is take your threader and push it through the front of the punch needle so it pops out the back there. Then get your embroidery floss, make sure you have enough slack, and thread it though there on the back and pull it on through.
On the tip of the punch needle there is like a flat part with a lil hole on it and the open part where you just threaded your floss through. Poke the threader though the front of the flat part with the lil hole.. thread the floss then pull it through.
I just have this scrap cotton fabric. To put it on the hoop you put the fabric on top of the small/inner hoop, make sure your bigger hoop is all loose, push it on, and tighten it up. Make sure your fabric is nice and taut.
I also have these clamps.. and they are just to help me film. they are not necessary.
So now I thought I could start punching the needle... but.. I was having a hard time with it.
Right here it looks like its beginning to work.. but if you look and see, you can tell I'm using my left hand under the fabric to grab the floss as I'm pushing it through.. which isn't how your supposed to do it.
I thought maybe if I tried it on a thicker fabric that would hold the floss in place... but I was still cheating with my left hand.. Then I thought maybe if I made the needle a little bit longer.. maybe that would help... anddd..... nah..
When I saw the videos I thought you would be able to just punch it and it would stay.. but It just kept slipping out.. Until right here:
I just didn't make the stitches as long and that seemed no keep them in place.. after some more experimenting I went back to the original cloth.
There are better fabric out there for punch needle. Most people would use a weavers cloth. Witch has some stretch to it so it will hold the floss better and also won't tear as easily as your poking your needle in the fabric repetitively.
but... this fabric seemed to work well enough for me.
What I found out is you have to keep rotating your pen so its always facing the direction you're stitching; with the open part leading the way and the flat part where your floss is poking out leaving a tail.
Another thing is you have to keep the needle really close to the fabric. What helped me was scraping the needle across the fabric as I went. eventually I got the feel of it and didn't need to scrap the fabric:)
Now the only issue I have is how to keep the floss from just unzipping and falling out.. (cause its just a bunch of loops where you stitch) I'll figure that out later.
I outlined the hoop on the fabric so I knew how big I could draw the design on the fabric:) Once I got it all sketch up I was ready to go
After ending the first line, I just cut it and pull the floss through to the back just to keep it nice and clean. I didn't do that to all of them.. and just cleaned it up after I was all done.
So to keep it from unzipping once you're all done, what I did was put an interfacing on the back. You put the shiny side face down on the back and iron it on.. hopefully that will work ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Eventually I used the iron on adhesive stuff as the interfacing. that seemed to hold the stitches in place better and could even be used to iron your punch needle piece on something 🙌🏻
on the last piece I did, I wanted to do a more tradition punch needle, where the back with all the loops is actually the front.
The important thing to know and do with that is to flip your fabric after you draw on it so that it won't be backwards on the loop side.
If you guys want to win one of the pieces, you can go to my Patreon where I will be doing a give away!:):) www.patreon.com/shmoxd

“We framed some meat??!” Omg, I’m so glad I introduced you to iron-on interfacing, it definitely helped with those loops! Real talk, after our mega-27-hours-of-embroidery challenge - what do you reckon is more time consuming, hand-embroidering or needle punch?

    • @Shmoxd
      @Shmoxd  6 років тому +172

Seriously! the interfacing was a god send. and and and... definitely hand embroidery takes the longest for me. The white skull with the flowers coming up took me about 4 hours to punch needle, where if I hand stitched something that size it would take 10 - 12 hours...

With punch needling like this the loops are actually the front! It's supposed to be sort of like a carpeted texture instead of traditional embroidery.

it's easy to learn, takes time and patience, consider that the material/fabric used needs to have a tight weave(or when you punch it your loops may not stay in and the needle may tear the material), and you'll need a lot of embroidery floss, and bandaids if not careful

It’s the little loop side on the back that is actually your finished side, not the flat part. I’ve been doing this since the 80s I did one of my cat, then painted the flat side with pva then I fluffed up the looped side and it was very like my cat. I started writing this when you were doing the flat side, I think you did well on both. I would use iron on interfacing now if I was doing something, not as messy as pva! I’m thinking of doing a cushion cover, so it will definitely be interfacing!

I hope this comment can help some people who have questions. I have this same Cameo Punch Needle set. It comes with 3 needles a small, a medium and a large. The extra spring is used specifically for the largest needle only and the spring that is in the blue part comes out and has a narrowed end and it is used for the medium and small needles. You have to have the springs for it to work correctly. The needle sizes are for working with different threads and thicknesses. It is a big deal to be sure to use the correct thread with the right sized needle in order for the thread to move smoothly through. If the thread is to tight in the needle your stitches will pull out. I bought mine off of Etsy and you can even purchase a extra fine needle for single thread and intricate stitching. It is also a BIG deal to use the correct type of fabric. If you try to use plain cotton the stitches will pull out and the needle will cut the fabric because the fibers are not woven tightly enough to hold the stitches, I learned this the hard way. You can use linen fabric but I would advise using a iron on interfacing to make it durable. I have seen in other tutorial videos that you can use a 60/40 cotton polyester blend fabric also but I haven't tried it yet. Also, you work on the back side of the fabric, I have done work on the front using the lowest height setting and it gives it a neat look. My advice it to watch lots of videos first and then to just go for it. You'll never learn without trying. There is also several other names it goes by such as Russian punch needle and thread painting. There is also a beautiful way to do it called Bunka Shishu. It is the Japanese way that uses satin stitch and silk thread. I still am working up to try that one but using 2 strands of regular embroidery floss so I can wash it. Oh yeah, you can make items to be washable by painting on permanent washable fabric glue to the wrong side of the work. This is why I bought the set because I want to make embroidered center panels for quilts. Thats my idea anyway. I hope the novel long comment helps someone.

I got the punch needle free for buying dozens of thread. The lady showed me how to use it and I was like - wide eye - wow that little pen is going to solve all my life problems. With very high expectation I was very disappointed haha.... I can't stop the loops from coming off. Thanks for showing the struggle and the end product!

Ok........... I’ve been trying to look for a helpful, creative video about these punch needles because they have been everywhere! But every “tutorial” I’ve seen, has been someone trying it out seeing that “it doesn’t work” and they just give up. It’s been so frustrating because I’ve been wanting to pick this up as a new hobby. UNTIL NOW. This Video means so much too me like that might sound like an exaggeration but DAMN do I love this video. I got extremely excited when this video took a turn for the better. Seriously, thank you so much. You are my FAVORITE DIY channel! As a male viewer, I’m sick of all these DIYers being nothing but girly girls making things with flowers. This is a breath of fresh air GODDAMN AM I EXCITED!

Annika Victoria made a video about this pen a few weeks ago. It’s actually not really meant for needlepointing and to make it work you need to use a tighter weave cloth.

That's actually not meant for flat embroidering. It's a special kind of tool that's designed to make those loops and you have to use a special kind of fabric that has a very tight knit.

I wish I'd looked at your video before I bought my punch needle. Thanks SO much for your clear simple explanation. I'm really good with this stuff usually and for the life of me I could not work out how to keep the stitches in once sewn. I kept losing everything I did. You saved my sanity! I love the idea of using the iron on to seal it. Still going back to old school for my sanity but I really, really appreciate your video.
