  • DIY ear cuff, middy ring, and stoned rings. Get 2 months of Skillshare free: skl.sh/shmoxd6
I tried to get most of the material I used from home.. but some of the things I needed to buy was those helping hand things, some silver, flux, blow torch, and some silver solder. (other things I used that I just had at home was a hammer, pliers, tape, a file, sandpaper, scissors, tweezers, and a rock/turquoise)
We're going to make the ear cuffs first. Cut out a piece of silver that is like .25'' x 1" . You can buy silver that is already about that size so you won't have to cut anything... but I'm just going to use my scraps:)
I rounded out the corner by cutting it off then file and sanding it down. You want to get rid of all the rough edges.
Next take some pliers. These ones have teeth on them, so I wrapped them with some tape. That way it won't scratch up the silver too bad as I'm bending it.
Get the silver as round as possible ( and the size you want). To get it more round.. take something that is round that it will fit on. Put it on that round thing and hit it with a hammer with it pressed against a hard surface.. until its nice and round.
Next I'm going to make a little middy ring:)
First we need a little wire. So I cut that out, straightened it out with pliers and by hitting it with a hammer on a hard surface.
When you work with metal; bending it and hitting it with a hammer.. it will work hardened. That means is will get all stiff and brittle. To fix that you are going to anneal the metal with a blow torch. Anneal basically means to get it red hot.
I just a used a little kitchen blow torch to make all the rings:) and I also overcooked some Creme Brulee..
When annealing the metal be sure to keep the flame moving.. Thats a good tip for when using the blow torch always... or you will melt your silver.
The silver should now be easy to bend with your hands so you can make it nice and round. Fit it on your finger to size it up... then cut off the excess.
To solder the ring together you can't have a gap. So bend the two sides past each other and pull it back. It should have enough spring in the metal that it will stick together now:)
Next you will use some flux. That will help the solder stick to the silver and flow better. Put some flux on the part you want to solder together then torch it till it melts. Then add your Solder. (There are three different basic silver solders: Easy, Medium, and Hard. Hard melts at the hottest temperature so it is hardest to melt.. then medium.. then easy- being the easiest to melt)
I was using the wrong Flux so it wasn't working... I Finally got the right flux and it worked! So after you've melted the solder, dip the whole thing in water to cool it down. Then pull on the solder joint to see if it worked.
If the solder holds, you can file off any of the bumps and try to get rid of the seam so you can't tell where it was soldered together. Then sand of any of the fire stain you get from torching the metal.
Next I want to make a ring that has a stone in it. I was either going to use a piece of turquoise or this rock that Roms and I found while in Moab:)
When making this ring I had 2 basic parts.. the band and the part that hold the stone.
First I made the prongs that hold the stone by soldering two wires together in a lil' X. Be sure and use Hard solder to make that part. When making the band you will also want to use hard solder- That way when you solder the prongs to the band... you can use easy solder and that will melt before the hard solder (which is holding your band and prongs together) does.
Using those basic tips you can make almost any ring:) including the ring I made for myself at the end.
Here is a link to the stuff I bought:
    Helping hand clamps: amzn.to/2shVktV
    Blow torch: amzn.to/2FjVwkN
    Silver sheet: amzn.to/2QB2KlB
    Flux (the right kind): amzn.to/2SKmZiP
    Silver Solder: amzn.to/2AGFAVV
    Things I wish I bought:
    Jewelry pliers: amzn.to/2VETyAC
    Metal cutting scissors: amzn.to/2SNxzp6
    Silver wire for band: amzn.to/2THlcLA
Silver for Ear Cuff and Bezel: amzn.to/2FlIdkb
So those are all my Amazon Associate links.. but tbh you might find the stuff more easily on a site like www.riogrande.com

I love your videos for so many reasons. One, you're just a regular dude teaching others how to diy. Two, you show when you make mistakes, which I think is great for the learning process. Three, the fact that you put the narrative in the description is so inclusive to those with hearing problems/deafness. Four, I think it's sweet how much you obviously care for your girlfriend. 😊
    You're the best, man.

Is there anything you can't do? I actually went to school for 3 years to learn jewellery making, and things got a bit more complicated there. I have two tips: when you solder silver, don't point the flame directly at the solder, but warm the entire piece first and move the flame around. Solder flows towards heat, and if the piece of solder is the hottest point, it won't flow properly. Also, you'll end up melting the piece. Another tip is to put the piece after soldering to a cup of warm citric acid solution to remove the dark fire scale left from fluxing and heating. You'll end up with a clean piece which is easier to polish, and won't ruin your files (flux is like glass after soldering). Don't put anything with steel (or iron) in the citric acid solution, or it will get ruined.
    Great video!

Cool tips! I hope I’m not being a bother by asking but can I ask what made you go to school for jewelry making and if you think it’s worth it? Just wondering, as I’ve been making jewelry for a while and never really considered actually going to school for it until just now haha.

@@tylerburney8576 Where I live (Finland), we have a long tradition of gold smith education, and the field is quite regulated. I happen to live close to a respected school. I started doing jewellery on my own, but I figured I could actually become a "real" jewellery smith and turn it into a small business, which I did. I think I've learnt more on my own than in school, but I guess it was worth the time to learn to do things "the right way"- and it didn't cost me anything. It's definately possible to learn making jewellery on your own or through shorter courses, but around here, people value degrees and titles, and they are impressed to hear I went to school for this - which often helps with selling stuff.

Your solder did not flow the first time because there was firescale (the black stuff on your metal from heating it that you referred to as fire stain) on the metal, the flux probably would have worked if your metal was cleaner!! Using a toothbrush and some soap to clean the metal would help, ideally pickling the metal after applying heat. Also if you apply the solder while the flux is still wet it should essentially hold it in place before melting. AND applying flux to your entire piece will help lessen the firescale :)

@@Shmoxd I'm not sure what flux you originally used, but any flux should work (though I cannot peak on flux used on electronics, i would think that its just a lower grade but i dunno). would just stick with handy flux if you're just soldering jewelry as an occasional hobby. Its a go to for hobbyist jewelers because its cheap and decent. There are definitely different types of flux, like handy flux is a borax-based compound that provides substantial oxide protection but often leafs a tough glassy skin often referred to as "flux glass" but that's easily removed with pickling and/or filing and sanding.

My two cents: You may want to use a piece of cloth between the block and use a leather covered hammer as you can transfer impurities onto your silver - when you solder, it'll include the impurities affecting the longevity and maintenance of the ring. More important for 925. Also easier soldering process in general. The leather can also help prevent unwanted marking and nicking on your metal.

Good idea to melt the flux before adding the solder, I never thought of that but it seems like it would make getting the solder in the right spot way easier. Also good to know a brulee blow torch works well!

I enjoyed this, and it will come in handy when I need a refresher on what the process is. I would do a couple things differently, just from me watching from an outside POV, but this was very helpful, and you're very talented. It's nice to see someone who really tries, and makes his gifts and projects nicely done, and makes them really beautiful.

Hey, if you dip your piece of solder in to the flux first, then place it on the ring, it should stay on the ring better. The solder will naturally ball up first, then as it gets to melting point, it will flow in to the seam. Another tip is to heat the ring evenly throughout, then focus on where you want to solder.

a couple tips if anyone plans on doing this:
dried up boric acid flux can be reconstituted with water, and when it's wet it works as a glue to keep pieces of solder in place
you can do the same things with copper and brass that you can do with silver, silver solder works on all of them, but it will show unless you're really sparing with it, because it's a different color
if you make a habit out of making jewelry, fire scale can be more easily removed with an acid bath than with sanding, but you have to be careful not to leave it in too long unless you want it to look etched and matte

I’ve never seen or understood how soldering works but I remember years ago this guy I dated would always fix my jewelry for me by soldering it and he’d take it out in his workshop garage and bring it back within like 10 mins all fixed up and I never had any clue how he was fixing it haha now I know after watching this vid 👍🏻👌🏻✌🏻

when you use solder it might be helpful (and faster) to make sure you sand the pieces you're soldering where the solder will go!!! it can be a pain, and soldering already is a pain, but making sure your metal is super clean is really helpful :)
