  • Whatsss up! Screen printing using stuff you can find at home:)
    Get SKILLSHARE 3 months free!: skl.sh/shmoxd3.
    I had been getting comments saying you guys wanted to see a more affordable way to screen print.. so thats what we are doing today:)
    Specail guest! Kristina! my sister:)
    The material today that we are using are embroidery hoops, acrylic paint, glue, panty hose, sharpies, credit cards, (and scissors and paint brushes.. I forgot to mention those) and if you can't find panty hose you can use a thin fabric. I used chiffon. it worked really well:)
    First thing you do is cut your fabric to fit your hoop. Then put it in your embroidery hoop. Make sure it's nice and tight.
    I just cut off the excess fabric around the hoop..(I kinda wish I didn't.. it made it hard to pull it tight while I was using the hoop)
    Now that the hoop is ready, we are going to draw the design on. When drawing or tracing the image on.. you are going to want to do it on the back. This will ensure that when you print it, the image won't be flipped:)
    With Kristiana's design she is using black paint on white paper so she is going to cover up everything up on her screen that is white, with glue. I'm just doing the opposite.
    If you mess up you can wash out the glue with water before it dries.
    Then just let it dry. Once its dry enough put your hoop face down on the paper (or material) and use your card to squeegie it through the fabric. I found that with the chiffon you can keep your card pretty straight up and down with lots of pressure, but with the panty hose.. you need to keep your card flat so it doesn't pull the panty hose as you print it.
    I went and rinsed out the paint with water... There were parts that the glue came out so if you want to use it again you will have to touch it up.
    If I were to do this again I would have put food coloring in the glue so I could see where I had filled it in when I was touching it up.
    The second process.. You prep the hoop just like the first way. The only difference is you use emulsion to get the design in the screen and print your design off on a transparent paper.
    Activate your emulsion by putting the sensitizor in and mixing it well. This makes it light sensitive.. so you should coat your screen some where dark.
    Then put it some where dark to dry.
    Once it is dry you can either draw directly on the screen (from the back) or print off a transparency sheet. Then you can hold the screen up to the sun.
    Make sure the design is blocking the sun from curing the emulsion and hold it up to the sun for 10 - 20 seconds.
    Then you can take it to you sink and wash it out with water.. just keep the screen infant of the running water and don't use your finger to wash it out.. :(thats how I messed min up:( just let the water do the work.
    Once it is rinsed out.. you should be able to see the light shine through where your design was. Let your screen dry.. and then you can print it:)

    Another little at home tip instead of transparency sheets or wax paper (FYI a little messy): Print image on regular copy paper, coat with regular cooking oil (do a LITTLE BIT at a time), rub it into the paper until the whole sheet or image area is transparent, wipe off excess FULLY, and use!

    I tried this in fashion class and I found out a similar result with the stockings so when doing this project I do recommend that you use a non stretch fine meshey fabric. And in addition to school glue you can use modpodge to fill in holes! I didn’t know that you could use acrylic paint though and that’s pretty rad!

    • @Shmoxd

      I've done it on a denim jacket. I found that when you iron it in it helps it bond better and lasts longer. just iron on top of brown paper or something similar so you don't melt and smudge the paint

    first off dude.. you're a genius for figuring this out. Also, it does make sense that the chiffon works better than the pantyhose because the chiffon is a woven fabric with little to no stretch where the pantyhose is a knit that needs a lot of stretch to do its intended job!!

    Ah, this is an old video, but hot tip to reduce the risk of “blowout”:
    Rather than trying to push the ink straight from the blob (right out of the paint bottle, or collected around the edges) to the target surface (paper, shirt, roomba), you can pre-load the design with a bit of ink so that the coating is relatively light, then press _that_ into your surface. This works best if you’re loading the front of your screen (so the ink from the initial pre-load doesn’t touch the surface until you want it to). (I’ve only used screen printing ink, before, though, and I’m not sure if this applies as well to more general paint.)
    Additionally, it’s best if you can get the design on in one decisive sweep, rather that a couple swip-swips, because when you do that, the screen will push against the surface a couple times, picking some ink up and (1) depositing it where you might not want it, and (2) blur the design on your next surface as well.

    Because Elmer’s glue is fairly water soluble, it would have probably worked out a bit better if you had just painted the design with acrylic and let it dry since it would be far less likely to come off wile rinsing. Plus, then you could use colored paint to see your design more easily! I’ve been really into stamp carving on my channel lately, so printmaking is the natural next step. I remember seeing a similar method on another channel and thinking the exact same thing. =>..

    • @mimmikibilly
      @mimmikibilly 5 років тому +6

      @@Shri100percent yes because acrylic dries and becomes waterproof, unlike gouache or oil (the latter dries out really slowly). you are basically creating a paint crust that will shield the negative parts of the design and prevents ink or paint you want to print with from leaking through the fabric.

    While looking up DIYs of screen printing I happened to stumble across this gem💎Exactly the informative information I have been searching for👀 While keeping me delightfully entertained!!! Loved how you showed the learning process and mistakes you made. Also using random stuff that “we” people who craft to much already have laying around. Now off I go to work on my own designs and maybe finally actually complete a project. Because ADD kicks my ass and I seem to always start a new project before EVER completing anything. Kinda like this rambling I’m doing right now. I can never seem to shut the hell up🤫and quite possibly need to be more engaged with the local folks/neighbors. But also feel that people kinda, well they kinda suck. Except John, my neighbor. Sweet old fella who takes care of all the stray cats living on the prowl. Though I’d prefer if they didn’t use the mulch and flower beds as litter boxes. But I suppose don’t really mind. Except when the blink camera goes off 20 times a night capturing the wondering kitty cats. Ok sorry about all that chitchat and other nonsense🥴Off I go........
    Thanks for Sharing

    I attended a summer workshop about screenprinting this July and, after we had put the emulsion on the screen, we would draw something on the back of the screen, free-hand whatever we wanted with 1-3 tones (some gradation could be achieved), using a black oil pastel, like the ones for lithography (there was a workshop for lithography too so we had a lot of these). Afterwards, we would let the screens "develop" I guess in the sun -a process rather fast, since it was in the middle of the day in July. Then one of the instructors rinsed them all off, the oil pastel went away as well (leaving just a faded trace behind, they called it "ghosting") and they were ready to print. Also, you first load the screen and the design with ink, drag it down once, back up again while it's in the air and THEN you put the paper or the fabric you want to print onto underneath your screen and repeat the process, making sure every time you lift the screen to change paper to push the ink back up, to the top, feeding the design again. A really useful tip they gave us was not to pull the ink too much to the sides since that would mean it would spread too much and we would lose a small amount of it with each print. And, let me tell you, that shit costs a lot, especially when you are looking to produce high quality prints for clients and not just as a hobby.

      @vayermenoviko0linixD 6 років тому +1

      No, wait, my bad. First we drew, then put the emulsion on, then left it to dry, rinse it off and print. Sorry!

    If you want to print on translucent paper, instead of getting that plastic stuff or trying to print on parchment, you can print on regular old paper with black ink, and then just rub vegetable oil on the paper. It'll make it translucent enough that you can put the oily paper on top of a screen and then expose it with a bulb. I use this method all the time!

      You can get water soluble stabilizer, then you can draw your design on the stabilizer, embrodier through the stabilizer and wash it away. There's different brands, DMC calls it "magic paper" but in Europe the big brand is Vlieseline. 😊

    Cool ideas! It's always good to find ways to screen print without a full studio. Some thoughts: I like screen filler for what you used the glue for. Same company, speedball. It isn't water soluble once it's dry, like glue is, and it's red. As for the washability, try heat setting the paint by putting it in the dryer FIRST, then wash and dry.
