    Watched the video and read the comments, then watched again...she was talking about the returns which are the side seams she was sewing when she said she cut the lining 8” “shorter” than the fabric - and yes she could have said narrower or talked about width! Her video is very well done and I appreciate her instructions! Thank you!

    I have been struggling to finish the task of making curtains on my own, so my uninspired self decided to search for a video, much to my surprise this very insightful and clear video, showed my what i was doing in my own curtain-making and I was able to finish the and hang my very own curtains, thank you very much for this Jean French!

    Hi Lauren
    Just wanted to thank you for your time in showing me how to sew on the Thermal curtains. This video will definitely come in handy. I ordered the wrong size curtains for my front room, as they were too long, I had a choice to return them to the shop or order the right one. But as I love sewing, decided to add a thermal layer to them and then cut the bottom. My parents had heavy thick curtains which were older than me. So a good twenty years which we learnt to hand wash every year. So I’ll be making my own curtains (with thermal lining) in future thanks to your tutorials! Thank you!

    I absolutely love your video. I have made 5 pairs of lined curtains in the past year or so, and I could not have done it without your wonderful instruction. I am getting ready to finish the 6th pair of curtains so for good measure, I watched your video again. Now I feel as if I'm ready to finish this last pair! Thank you so much.

    THANK YOU!! Iso hope you see my comment. This is by far the most detailed and easy to follow instructional video. I've watched at least 10 other videos and printed out measuring/sewing instructions from various website. I threw it all away after seeing your video. My first panel came out perfect...3 more to go! Thanks again!

    Your explanation and demo was clear, concise and easy to listen to. It has given me the confidence to make more curtains. Of course my curtain isn’t quite as lovely as yours and there is room for improvement in my efforts but the point is that you have given me the confidence to do more and I'm very grateful.

    Hello Adrian. I just wanted to let you know that, in all of UA-cam, yours is the very best, if not the only, instructional video on lining draperies. I found it to be very helpful. I am buying some 100% cotton Indian block printed tapestries and will be turning them into curtain panels. I've used them for curtains in the past and found that they sun ruins them in short order, so they need to be lined. I've never done that before. I'm so glad that you took the time to make this video to help us with what is a very confusing process for a beginner. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    I love the cleverness of getting the returns by sewing the lining fabric, which is 4” of inches smaller, each side, then the drapery fabric, to the edges of the drapery fabric on each side. The hack of then marking the centre of each, and then aligning the marks, and sewing from the centre marks out. So much easier then hemming everything and still risking the two fabrics not being flat together. Thea 🐨🌻

    I got a bit confused doing this, so maybe it needs a bit of clarification. The lining is not 8 inches shorter (i.e. in the vertical) but is actually 8 inches LESS WIDE (i.e. horizontally). I cut mine 8 inches shorter and then couldn't work out what was going on when you pinned them!

  • @janedoe-lg1qb
    @janedoe-lg1qb 11 років тому +63

    This , I think, contains a huge error. Jean French says to cut the lining 8 inches shorter. If you cut the lining that short it won't reach the hem ! Surely she means cut the lining 8 inches NARROWER ? This then gives you the returns. It took me two viewings to work out what she meant . Pretty important if you are new to curtain making ! Other than that is is a wonderful video and taught me a new technique on the heading tape.

      Thank you Jane! As a complete novice in curtain making I followed the instructions to the letter and made the lining shorter - I did wonder if that was right at the time, but thought hey ho I've never made them before so perhaps some magic will happen - well of course it didn't. Resulting in a wasted curtain. Then I read Jane's comment and all is now good in my little world. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    • @sarahgonzalez2507
      @sarahgonzalez2507 8 років тому +3

      Why didn't I read these comments first?!? AAAHHHH!!! I've just cut my curtains according to what Jean says in the video, and now my lining has been cut completely wrong :( I liked Jean's curtains for how professional they look, but now I have to follow a different video that does not look as nice.

    • @Argyll9846
      @Argyll9846 7 років тому +10

      I'm sure she meant 8 inches on the width not 8 inches on the length which would give a return of about 2 inches on each side when sewn.. That's how it looks in the video and the lining length is much longer than the main fabric - from memory about 5 inches.

    I just made some really nice bedroom curtains (even if I do say so myself). Thank you, I would never have been able to make them without your tutorial. The only part I had a problem with was the header tape. Yours looked like it was doubled over at the ends and mine were not so I had to stitch it closed to stop the hook falling out of the end ones. I doubled up at the ends of the second curtain I made and this one was fine. Thanks again :)

      Adrian...thanks....and it is about the hem....not the returns.

      Hello again I have just been watching the video back to see what was said. The hem is folded over to match the width of the return it looks like to me and the lining is about an inch or two shorter. I think the reason for not sewing the whole length of the bottom of the lining is to ensure free movement of the fabric to avoid puckering...It's a long time since we did this so I am just going from what I see. I hope this helps.

    I've never made anything since I left School & that was only a Cookery Apron LOL, hopefully if I follow your instructions that are very clear & helpful I will be able to make curtains for my Motor Caravan, I'll let you know how I get on or not LOL. Jackie T x

    Do you stop short when sewing the sides so that the lining can be turned up to finish or do you sew the full length of each side?

      Stop short, not sure by how much but probably about 7 or 8 inches

    This is a very useful video. I’m going to attempt to make some but just wanted to ask to explain the bit where the lining is laid on top of the front side of the curtain material. Is this correct?

    Your video is educational and straight forward. Some clarification as far as "return" or other terminology as you talk would be helpful. Other than that I look forward to creating my own curtains.

    Excellent video. Thank you!
    I see a comment about an "error" of shorter vs narrower. I understood it meant from side to side because I had seen that technique in something else. I have to have things in my hands to understand things sometimes so cannot picture the length yet. I thought linings were also shorter top to bottom. Will watch again.
    Excellent presentation though! More sewing videos.

    Hi when you sew the lining to the curtain for the return what is seam allowance it looks like approx an inch? I'm following your tutorial for making curtains and you make it look so easy. TIA
