people can't make mistakes with their own style tired of ones like you just stop just say you have your own way doing things im not gonna like way one does there curtains.. s say your choice stop it's your opinion
I like both analogous and complementary colored curtains or drapes. I have purple curtains in my bedroom right now I have red curtains in my living room that match the warm colors such as chocolate, orange and dark purple in my living room. But during the autumn, I change them to a bright orange. In my other bedroom, I have bright pink curtains. All of my curtains are black out curtains. I am planning to put lease in front of the curtains as is tradition in Germany. I live in the US but I’m a German descent and I like that tradition. It helps me be a little bit connected to my ancestral culture.
@@FoodNerds When you doing you, it makes you happy. Keep making yourself happy! :D When I lived in Germany for many years, I always admired the lace curtains they used for windows. I bought many of them long and short! :) back to the US with me.
Why not once in a while show a home that "most" people have? Not everyone lives in a vaulted ceiling macmansion. What about a 1970's standard 3-bedroom ranch?
I enjoyed all your tips. Here are some of my thoughts. I used to make drapes professionally. My preferred length is about 1/2” to 1” off the floor. They hang better. They don’t get dirty from floor dust. Plus, over time they settle and stretch a little. I despise puddling drapes. They never hang the same from one panel to the next. Always fussy. Finally, you should not walk into a room and the first thing you notice are the window treatments. They should showcase the windows and view beyond and blend with the walls.
if the first thing you notice is the drapes, or the couch, or the rug, that tells me those things are possibly too strong for the room you're in. A room should blend together, not showcase one item. It's like meeting a nice, well-appointed lady but all you can recall is the mass of bracelets or rings she's wearing...
Rikki and Judy I totally agree with both of your comments. I was a decorator for Sears in the mid to late 80's and you're stating standards that are still strong in their proper setting. At about the 4:00 minute time point the room pictures were as extreme polar opposites as you can get. One pic showing what's too low, then the second, what's just right. That classic traditional style room and the choice of rod and drapery, at that height over the window was just fine... for that room.🤷🏾♀️ It was NOT too low. Then the modern straight line clean cut look is shown with drapery up to the ceiling... excellent... for that room. That was a quick glance for me but I believe the placement of the drapery in both of those rooms were just fine. Anyway, I'm just sayin'. Be your own trend setter. Who knows what you like... better than you? And I enjoyed all the tip too.😊
I personally get creeped out at the idea of my curtains touching the floor so grazing and pooling are a no go for me. I like a healthy 1-2 in from the floor. That way I know if there is a spill or something, nothing is going to touch the curtains
I personally don't like it either... it looks cluttered to me and will get dirty faster. I like mine right at the baseboards or just below the window pane depending where it is in your home. And why waste the money if you don't need that long. Those get very very pricey
No curtains pooling or grazing the floor! I was cleaning my floors, I picked up my curtains from the floor and a giant spider was in it, it hit me in the face!!! I almost had a heart attack, no no never again! It took me hours to calm down!
I have to turn on my baseboard heaters for a minimum of five months a year. Pooling drapes only works part of the time and then I either have to gather them up that really looks weird, or get shorter curtains. I am opting for the shorter.
Great tips! I follow them all, but you forgot one: A lot of people have small windows that aren’t very wide. A common mistake is not hanging the curtains far out enough. Mounting the curtains much wider than the windows will make the window look larger. Thank you for your great videos! I really look forward to them. ❤️
I love your videos, Christine, and I think you are so talented with decor. However, I have to say that I don't think there are necessarily 'mistakes' in how one decorates. Everyone's taste is different and your home should be cozy and pleasing to you. For example, I really dislike curtain rods that are hung several inches above the top of the window. Don't like the look of that gap. And I hate curtains that puddle on the floor - a cleaning nightmare! Most of my curtains are made from sheets, which are much cheaper than actual curtains and are custom to my tastes. I also have a window where my couch is partly under it, so curtains to the floor would not work. My point is - decorate your home how YOU love it and if it makes you happy, there are no mistakes. ♥ Thank you for sharing your ideas. ♥
Absolutely agrees. I also have a couch in front of my window. I have blinds and lace curtains hanging inside of the window about half an inch from the sill. It looks beautiful. The lace was very expensive, but soft to the eye at the back of my full leather couch. It really looks stunning 🌹
There is a reason why they sell short curtains that fall down to the windowsill, called apron/windowsill curtains. That is actually a style on its own, and second, those are used when you have to put furniture against a wall like a desk, for example, but the curtains would be in the way if they were longer.
I'm so past all the do's and don'ts of decorating. I put up window treatments that make me smile and are situated that make it easy to clean the floor. I don't mean any disrespect, but we should decorate our home in a way that makes us feel comfortable and joyful. Too many houses have no character and look the same as everyone else's house.
Agree, it's all a matter of someone's opinion/likes/dislikes. I do what I like. I don't care if someone thinks it's awful. Those that matter don't mind; those that mind don't matter...
I don’t like to have my space looking like other peoples own, ie matching chair set, center table, matching lamps. A young lady came by and looked around and said, I love this eclectic look
Interesting tips. I had the "gently puddle" drapes before. Here's what I remember. Chic for a day. Then dust bunny collector. Fave bed for kitty. Difficult to vacuum around. Since then I'm more practical, with clean white moldings and top-down, bottom-up cellular shades. I got the newer S-curved vertical for door wall, and they are amazing! Hang with no gaps.
From someone who worked for years in a high end drapery dept. 1) Drapes should always be 2-3 times the width of the window, except in the case of pinch-pleat drapes which are naturally fuller. You should allow for 12 inches on either side of the window for "stack back" to the entire window is on display when the drapes are open. You should NEVER tie your drapes in a knot in the middle as it simply looks "trashy" or childish. Use tie backs, hold-backs, even simple ribbon can make a nice tieback. Drapes should not be mounted at the top edge of the window frame, but higher to draw the eye up. They should graze the floor or be no more than 1/2 to 1 inch off the floor. (1/2 in better for tile, 1 inch acceptable for carpet) Puddling is fine, IF... you have no children or pets. Otherwise, you'll find drapes become "hiding" or sleeping places. Shorter curtains are best for windows with issues below them (radiators, air vents, counters) or in kitchens, but even then, the drapes should ALWAYS extend 1-2 inches BELOW the window sills. Drapes also help INSULATE your windows which is important in really cold or really hot climates. Sheers can ALWAYS be used behind drapes but should be the same length as the drapes. NEVER longer or shorter! And remember, as they hang, your drapes WILL stretch (especially looser woven materials!), so take that into account. And if you DIY your own pinch pleat drapes.... learn to do it correctly and stop cheating with cheap-looking pleater tape. I learned to do this is 8th grade home ec. You can learn too!
I have now watched 3 of these videos and all 3 of you say different things about curtain length. I think to each his own. Different things look better in different types of homes. Your home and the homes in your photo are indeed very beautiful but not so realistic for most of us. I live in a nice standard ranch style one level home. No vaulted ceilings, and no real room for crown molding. While this was a good video maybe do a video for folks like the rest of us who don't have a big home with vaulted ceilings. That would help us figure out how to make our spaces look better🥰
My most favorite curtains I ever had were actually tablecloths from Zellers years ago . A buttery yellow the same color as the wall with rose florals. The length was perfect with clip on rings! They looked so professional but so easy!
Me too! Tablecloth Power! Back in the 80s I bought a beautiful batch of all the same dark gray textured fabric tablecloths, a department store clearance of Ralph Lauren (perfect length as mentioned). I even bought the 12 cloth napkins. They’ve been drapery and throw pillow covers since. Still have a few table cloths that I have never used, but plan to if I live long enough. With my complementary textured light colored bed coverlet, I use another of the table cloths to spread across the top 3rd of the bed to cover my sleeping pillows (dust/kid proof cover) then use decorative throw & back support pillows for when I want to lounge around before bedtime. Ahhhh, love that room.
Oh you reminded me... I used a flat bed sheets, with rings for my door to patio and several people told me that they feel so nice in my living room (I also have a garden hanging chair in my living room) that it feels so calm and relaxing :).
Remember one thing , your drapery from the exterior of your home should look as nice as the interior . So when you choose coloured drapery you should line with a neutral or pick a neutral blind or neutral shutters . There is nothing that’s looks so unprofessional as pink in one window and orange in another etc . A retired drapery professional .
Amen Gail!😁🤗 ...and I'm so glad to see you say drapery which is the correct name for these window treatments, NOT drapes. They are "draperies" OR it's a drapery. Your "professional" shows.😊
Nice tip! Thank you. I wouldn't have thought about what my curtains looked Iike from the outside of my house. That's such a good point. Yep, black & white plaid curtains on one window & orange floral curtains on another inside a house painted a blue & grey exterior, wouldn't be so appealing from the outside 😉.
I’ve been involved with development of multi family housing. It’s always been a requirement that the exterior window coverings are neutral. Colored exteriors showing just looks awful. You can do whatever on the inside. Sheers work to keep the outside looking cohesive but the need to be full enough.
Many great tips! Not sure about the curtain rods so high above the top of the window though. Looks odd to me when the curtains are open, as if the window shrunk. Lol 😅
I would go further, and say that the gap between the top of the window and the curtain rail looks awful...especially in those white linen curtains against the dark grey wall.
@@monicawarner4091 absolutely this. to me it screams 'I'm trying to make my windows look bigger' but in reality makes it look like the curtain rail is in the wrong pace.
When I see curtains hanging too high from the window I notice two things... 1) Perhaps the home owner doesn't know how to sew 2) The curtains are redefining the scale of windows that were defined for the room to look balanced. I do think curtains can frame windows well, but it seems odd to frame a block of blank wall above the windows....
I agree, I came to this same conclusion years ago, but being a senior with physical limitations, my DYI days are sadly and considerably much more limited for from when I was younger ! And being 9f limited fixedincome, a DIY budget, with need of a handy person to hire. So although my curtains now are light and airy, which I personally prefer; are not my rod's location presently they are too low and my curtains would then be too short, I prefer a slight puddle for a more relaxed and romantic context. But I just live with it and enjoy these types of informational video's! And what I dream of,if I were able, I like natural tones and textures for accessories and nature inspired art, and organic natural materials and decor. Kind of a boho chic vibe, with some traditional pieces of furniture, offset with mixed eclectic pieces, an artsy, unique style.. Coordinated but not show room matchy, matchy or the stark modern minimalist look, like no one actually lives there, magazine photo shoot, that seems to be prevalent in these types of DIY sites. Relaxed, calm, intimate, cozy welcome home aura, I am still a free spirit, but now through the Holy Spirit, kind of rebel, go against the flow, color outside the lines, person; cultivated back in the Flower Children Movement of the late 60's and early 70's, but tempered with age and life! But I still dance to the melody of a different tune! Individualism, imaginative, and creativity are qualities, I tend to gravitate too. I am finding a very much the same trend, in these video's which is great if that is what you are comfortable with, but risk being a little redundant and repetitive when you watch as many of these decor video's as I do, I see the same trend in a slightly varied style each time. But I enjoy looking at them, because they are pretty to the eye. I just always have to break free for myself. But then I am trapped in a aged body, with a youth spark on the inside, hard to maneuver! Thankyou for sharing your beautiful home and kind spirit❣🙏 🤲🕊🤝🙌❤ All of God's best for you. Blessings ~ -|- < ": } ✌
Many thanks for this! I still have horizontal blinds that were all new throughout my home when I bought it 15 years ago. I want to replace them with drapes with sheers behind because I have neighbors on all sides, plus I live in the desert Southwest U.S. I'm glad you mentioned Home Depot, we don't have an IKEA nearby. I sent this video link to my email for future reference. I will hunt through your videos for more info on hardware and how to hang the drapery rods/sliders, etc. , or maybe you could do a video on that subject. You have the best DIY home decor channel on UA-cam - the most clear and concise delivery of information that gets to the point, with useful information! Cheers!
I have always loved the puddle or grazing the floor. I've done this for years and when I got into staging and decorating I was thrilled to see this was a thing! It makes the room so much more luxurious and inviting. In my own home we have more of a modern rustic vibe but still love the luxury floor to ceiling [or moulding] curtain look. Thanks for your tips!
Costco's also a great source for blackout curtains. I bought a set (2 windows) of attractive "linen" look blackouts for $29-beat anything I saw elsewhere, esp. for the price.
Thank you for all the fabulous tips. I discovered the theory of hanging curtains only about 6 months ago. You are absolutely right. To low shrinks the room and so I moved them all about 2 Inches from ceiling and what a difference. It adds flow and symmetry. I am definitely a neutral girl, although my home now has a lot of color in it. I just bought new drapes for my bedroom. It's a beach theme room so walls are a Pacific blue color so, I chose a navy curtain with gold floral on it. It's one of those 5 piece sets. I was so mad when I got them. It's like the whole thing was sheer, the valances were different lengths and they had small rips and snags in them. Needless to say, they are being changed to a beautiful white floral sunblocking drape. Sorry for the long story, I just get so wound up over curtains. It's like what makes or breaks the room. Thanks again ❤
i prefer the length curtains you speak of, but with 7 dogs (yup. 7!), 4 of which are great pyrenees (so super long hair fluffy white dogs) and living on a farm covered in red clay, dog hair and red clay dirt and dust are constant (even with daily sweeping and mopping and the dogs being outside 90% of the time). So for MY house (sigh.....) the curtains need to be a few inches above the floor, to help keep them getting covered in said hair and red clay. Sigh.... oh well. Welcome to my world lol
How nice to have a handy husband to help implement all of your decorating ideas. As a trained interior designer with lots of experience in window covering design, all I'm lacking is a handyman. Lost my handy husband a year ago. I'm having to do a lot that he did for me on my own now. Yes, sucks to lose my husband, but it's quite gratifying to learn I'm capable of doing things I never expected to be doing now at 67 years old. With winter approaching, I'll have about 5-6 months of snow, time to do indoor projects. I just might get some draperies made. I certainly have the materials for them. You've inspired me to get going on some of my own interiors decorating DIY projects. Thanks for sharing! One thing I used to ask my clients when they couldn't decide which fabric they prefer: do they want the WOW! affect in the room or do they want the Oooooooohhhhhh effect. Curtains can really set the mood, IE make a difference in the atmosphere, in their room, so they need to decide how they want to feel when they're in a room. This really helped people make their fabric selections when I was helping them design their home. BTW, I absolutely LOVE the fabric you used in your nook. Oh, 1 tip I remembered when I went into another room after watching your video. That is, make sure the rod is the correct width. I'm sure you understand why, so I'll leave it to you to share that in another video.
My mom taught me to purchase the 2-4 panels per window! She made every curtain in all the windows except her formal living room. Love your living room styling!
Thank you so very much. I couldn’t figure out what was missing in my window dressings. I usually get very light sheer panels, and sometimes when on sale I get lacy pattern panels. Unfortunately when I was very ill, people came to my house to help, because I was in the hospital for three months. All of my beautiful lace panel curtains (still in the package) disappeared. Don’t have the budget like I did back then, and I don’t shop at fabric stores anymore. I live in the Bishop Art’s Neighborhood of Oak Cliff in Dallas, Tx. When people committed “white flight “ many of our stores just disappeared. I used to love driving all over my old neighborhood (adjacent to Highland Park) and buy my supplies there. But I don’t do that anymore. Too bad my little old bones are showing more than my actual age, but your videos are extremely motivating. May the good Lord keep you and your loved ones healthy and safe. St. Jude pray for us in Jesus name, AMEN. God bless you darling, Mona
I personally like shorter curtains that fall just below the window sill. It's practical and easy. My parents have long drapes in their living room and when it comes to drawing the curtains at night it's always an annoying process because right in front of the curtains are a table and a large armchair. The curtains are too large. For practical reasons I prefer shorter curtains....so much easier to manage. Less dust too.
Love your post! I just bought new curtains for two major windows. I was beginning to think may I should swap them, but I just wanted my windows covered, but didn’t want them to drag the floor. Those get in the way in numerous ways. Glad to see😢 some with an opinion like mine.
@@amandamiller945 cover areas of the kitchen window where you think someone might look in whether low or high , or if the window is overlooking a garden or private back yard, a simple valance or no curtain would work.
You are a breath of fresh air. I was looking for advice and ideas because I'm redoing my living room and so many "do's and don'ts" videos come off so pompous and almost condescending and mean girl-ish. I appreciate you giving tips and advice without making people feel like they suck and have no style because they aren't a professional interior designer. Lol.
These are great tips, thank you. I feel badly for people who don’t understand how to measure for window treatments as I was one of them and spent a lot of disappointed money. The rule of 2-1/2 - 3 times the width of the window makes all the difference, especially when they are closed. If, when closed, they look like a sheet or separate in the middle, there is not enough fabric and you will hate them every time you look at them. Buy all the fabric or curtains you need at the same time. Nothing is worse than running out of fabric or needing another pair of ready made, only to find they don’t match the initial product. Different runs in the factory will often produce colors that are ever so slightly off in shade or hue even thought the color number is the same. Better to have to take some product back than to run out. My pet peeve with ready made is buying several packages of curtains, only to find they differ in length, sometimes substantially enough to notice. Does anyone have suggestions on how to sew single panels together to eliminate the vertical hem between panels. After I hang the darn things, that’s all I see when I look at them. Enough palaver from me.
I like patterned drapes, never been good at choosing them. I have to say, your choice for your breakfast nook are, in my opinion perfect. The type of design, I would like to achieve, not everything patterned, but definitely a big, impact, without looking gawdy, tacky, assaulting. Well done, thank you for sharing what you know. I will be looking for drapes, here in the U.S.A., at Wayfair, IKEA, and HomeGoods.
I found this video literally as I was finding curtains for my living room. I bought 2 pairs at HomeGoods to see how they would look in my space with the furniture. So this was perfect timing. It was as if my thoughts were heard and your video appeared to answer the questions I had. Thanks for all the helpful tips!!!!

I appreciate that you give advice that isn’t based on how “cheap” things look. Some of us don’t have 500$ for a high quality 6x10 rug. Simply aesthetic tips to make our place look out together
Good advice. I only have 2 rooms with curtains, both are bedrooms. Lace in mine which look great for a girly room, and a Roman shade in the guestroom! I have plantation shutters in all the other rooms.
This is one of my biggest pet peeves. I notice curtains immediately upon entering someone's home. I also notice when people have their pictures hung too high on their walls. It's hard for me to not want to get a hammer out & rehang everything, lol.
@@bonniegirl5138 lol, I will take you up on your invitation:). I have now decorated my ex husband's house, two of my sons houses, my friend's homes, etc.. lol (& of course I always clean their bathrooms when I am there, lol. I figured I've been doing it since they started potty training, so what's another 40-50 years, lol)
Of all the pros and cons brought out, here is one I haven't yet seen pointed; personal safety. Drapes that puddle or just "skim" the floor, for those that have mobility issues, be they young or old present a serious safety hazard. Sneakers with the rubber around the edge can easily tangle you up quick. High heels likewise. For me, it was my toenails that were too long and caught on a small snag I didn't see. I almost pulled the curtains down in the resulting fall. So much for the puddled "romantic" look. (No pun intended.) LOL
If curtains are to short you can add different color fabric to the top or bottom to add length. If they are not wide enough again add fabric to the sides. Just make sure, when you add the fabric it is large enough to balance the curtains out. 🙂
@@Donna-vh5ym Once glued on with fabric glue, it shouldn't come off but then again always wash in delicate cycle or very short cycle, cold water and gentle or air dry for the dryer or hang them up to dry.
On point number one, lots of times I have to have something in front of the window, so for the curtain to be trapped behind the furniture is problematic.
I'm installing drop cloth drapes to help with energy costs in our home. We're rural and never needed the windows covered but I am so floored how cozy they make the space feel. Hanging then "high and wide" has been amazing. Great tips! Going to subscribe now.
@@homesteadgmad8223 I have seen them on the home makeover channels. On tv they look pretty good. Probably wouldn’t use them in a formal living or dinning room.
Long curtains do look better. However, living in UK, if you have central heating radiators, they are almost always sited under windows. This means longer curtains when closed, cover radiators keeping expensive heat next to windows . Only solution is short curtains
Guess what, you are right. I always measure my draperies at least one half inch off the floor. And that is unless someone is requesting a puddled look. Also, you can feel comfortable by e installing your drapery rod 4 in above your window frame unless you have feelings over 8 ft. Then other things have to be taken into consideration.
Sheer/semi-sheer are fine if you just want a little privacy but need lots of light in the room. I had them in my last home and whenever i took the down to wash them, the room seemed way too dark - light shining through sheer semi-sheer can really brighten a room. RULE #8 DRAPERY MISTAKE - getting drapery based on what someone online is saying is the way to go and not getting something you like because someone on line tells you it is wrong, Actually that applies to everything as everyone's taste is different, example I could never live in your home, your kitchen would drive me nuts and it is soo different than my kitchen, you most likely would not like my kitchen, but I love it
Another issue is buying the wrong size curtain pole for the weight of your curtains. Thin Poles can bend under the weight of a heavy curtain. IKEA is ok for budget curtains but you cannot beat a pair of made to measure curtains made by a talented seamstress who has seen it all before and can advise you on what will suit your taste , budget and be practical for your requirements. It can cost less than you think and you will get a pair of curtains which will last way way longer than off the shelf curtains. I love English country style with all the mixes of colours and florals but each to their own. Just because you like something which is not "en trend" that doesn't make it tasteless. Homes would be very boring if we all chose beige and white.
This is extrenely helpful. I close on a modest condo today and needed advice on how to address curtain needs for 2 bedrooms and a livingroom patio door. I now have a better understanding of a few issues. Also subscribed so I can enjoy more of your videos. You explain things so very clearly! (former educator here).
I really have to disagree with her on a few points - one I think it looks stupid - and I really mean stupid - to hang curtains halfway between the ceiling and the top of the window.. Either go up to the ceiling or stay at the top of the window. Also - there is nothing wrong with hanging curtain to just below the window sills. I used to live in a home that had furnace vents under each window at the floor. If I'd of hung curtains all the way down the air from those vents would have been blocked. I chose to hang my curtains about 4" under the windowsill, thus allowing free flow of air from the vents - also preventing the curtains getting dirty from the vents blowing on them.
I feel the same way. I think hanging to curtains at the ceiling instantly make me stair at the curtain rod instead of anything else in the room. It looks wrong to me. I also have very nice crown molding above my windows that I'd like to show off. ♡
I disagree with most so called design things. It's all only about "their opinion". (notice how many times she says my opinion..lol) Got news for them EVERYONE has an opinion and not sure who told them theirs mattered most. My motto do what makes YOU happy and don't worry what other's think. It's your space that you live in everyday. Life is too short to worry what others think.
I also disagree with some of these opinions. Puddling drapes, for instance, looks just plain slummy to me; not romantic. And drapery rods at or near the ceiling look okay if there's not much contrast between the drapery color and the wall, but when there is a lot of contrast, I think it looks chaotic. Case in point, her living room walls/drapes look WAY too busy with that stair-stepped effect. Same thing with her breakfast nook, but on a lesser scale because the wall/drape color contrast isn't quite as extreme as her living room.
Everyone has different preferences, for instance my hubby, my son have the same eye situation, its too bright and the glare of the sunlight. So I do prefer, darkening drapes. I dislike the blinds, they have these at our office environment but they are simple and clean looking and bigger! I love the sheer, you cannot see in but you can see out. I love the full look as well. I love colors!!
The house we moved into last year had wood horizontal blinds and no curtains. I changed out the wood blind in the bedroom for a blackout cell blind which worked better for me as I sleep late. I got so used to the look, I decided we didn't need to put up curtains at all. Hubby doesn't care one way or the other.
Just today I had a drapes fiasco. I normally have a modern minimalistic monochromatic home. Neutrals like light mocha and champagne. I ordered floral drapes for a change but they were all wrong: I tried them and no. No no no. Returned them and ordered a solid color with a bit of sheen to go with sand-textured walls. This has worked in the past and I like it. Can’t wait for them. The floral was too traditional and didn’t go with my home or my personality. Your video is helpful and I love the blues and greens together!
I have beige curtains with black pole right up to the ceiling. Still to put up 2nd set for other side of living room and the difference is just wow 😊 new subscriber
If you are going to add crown moulding, I would highly recommend finding a master craftsman that can put in plaster moulding. We have had both wood and plaster. Never a problem with the plaster but constantly had joint separation issues with wood. Yes, you will pay more for plaster but wow, the craftsmanship is incomparable
In the picture you showed the shorter curtains were NOT a mistake. If they hit the floor, the person would not be able to close them properly since there is a desk at the window. With them being window sill length they can completely slide closed. Functionality always superimposes aesthetics.
Great tips. I have a quick question. In a smaller home Should your living room and dinning room have the same exact color and pattern drapes? I am remodeling my home. I was thinking that I should maybe go simpler in my dining room and a little more dramatic in my living room.
I love mixing and matching patterns, like if I have a gray, white and pink flowered sofa (I don't), I would look for a striped or checked fabric with the same colors. Makes the room look like you hired an interior designer!
I appreciate you sharing this information and I will definitely be less stressed now about buying new curtains for my Living room. I get anxiety when I go to look and usually buy something that did not work at all for my space! Everything you talked about I have done. Buying curtains is very confusing and I hate trying to do it alone. Finding the style, weight, measurements. Rods, if you need a sheer, if you want the rod to show, how many panels you need …… Thanks. I am watching again.
Hi, some great ideas and tips here. Your tips about mixing patterns was really helpful. One problem that we have here in the UK, is that we often have heating radiators under our windows. This is a problem if we want to hang full-length curtains, as the radiators will be on in the evening when the curtains are closed (in the winter) so the heat is prevented from entering the room. I've never found a decent solution to this, other than shifting the radiators, which is a major thing and not always possible. So we end up hanging short curtains which is a practical solution but looks awful. Any suggestions would be welcome. I already have plantation shutters as well as short curtains in the bedrooms, but need both to keep out security lights which everyone seems to have on all night (houses in the UK are generally squeezed up close together so neighbour's lights are shining into our windows...). I love the look of sheer white curtains but they never seem to look right in our wet and gloomy climate. However, one solution would be to have summer and winter curtains I suppose. One thing I've done to solve the too narrow problem is to buy two pairs of curtains, and sew each pair together along the length, or if you have two windows to cover, buy three pairs total, split one pair in half lengthwise, and sew a half-width to the other four curtains to make them wider.
Yes you can use several panels on the same window, doesn't have to be just two per window, that is the right way to go. In countries were seasons are extreme, having several weights of curtain fabric does help and it is a very old tradition based on necessity from centuries ago. Short windowsill curtains are the go to solution, most of the time, but some people do roman shades, roller shades and the like to cover windows with radiators or ac vents on the floor.
Uhg. I'll never understand heaters under windows. Who thinks of these things?! Lol. We had baseboard heaters under our windows all along the walls. Sucked for furniture placement as well as curtains. Plus nothing like paying for heat to go out your windows. Oy...🙄
@@maggienbob1304 I was told the colder air from the window meeting the warm air rising from the radiator helps to circulate the heat. I’ve got hot water baseboards and it can be a pain when it comes to window treatments. I still use drapery, but usually don’t close them, and have wood roller shades for blocking light.
Curtains are somehow being underestimated and somehow neglected but they can add up more quality to the house value if used and designed properly. This is a catch! ❤❤
Thank you! Very well done. I like how you break things down into steps and categories, have a good understanding of space and color, and have visual examples of good and not-so-good.! Excellent! I'm glad I bumped into your channel!
Just came across this vid, I really appreciate your tips. Thanks! I prefer neutrals as well and absolutely love your home. It looks as though it feels so peaceful and calming to come home to.

Why do my curtains need to have a relationship with my floor anyways ? I mean living things can't even form a relationship, why must my curtains and floor . I think it's a matter of budget and taste .
Question: my bedroom has a vaulted ceiling. How do I hang curtains from there ? How far up to go and how far over to take the rod from each side? Thank you in advance… GREAT VIDEO! 😄
Ive had bare windows for about 1yr. I didn't know what style I wanted. At least now I know I was higher, closer to the ceiling. As far as the rod . I have to go with brass because I have more of a traditional decor and more brass. I love bare windows , but Summer is here . I know I want the heat out , but I love natural light. So , I kept thinking 4 different curtains like sheer, lace ,solid and print. I'm thinking of getting them made and having sofa and love seat reupholstered along with chair pads and pillows. I love the Waverly Fabrics and how I can combine diffrent patterns to bring in the and look of a whole room. Im not buying any furniture . If ,I need something I going to work with what I have . If I need to buy something to finish the entire room . I'm going to the Salvation Army or antique shop. Anyways ,Im excited! Thank you for the inspiration. I needed some ❤
Depending in where your heating/ac vents are also determines how long your drapes can be. You can't have drapes covering vents when heat is on as it can cause a fire.
I enjoy a calming space. So, I go for the neutral look, so beige's, whites, greys, with a light pop of color like a lavender or a turquoise or berry or the analogous look, but mostly in washed out colors. My husband on the other hand is all about black and tan. I also like the farmhouse look, where your walls are mostly white/off-white, but with black fixtures (door hinges, knobs, wrought iron stuff for the fire place OR AS the fireplace as a wood stove). It seems really New England to me. I don't like pooling. It makes me feel frumpy. Black out curtains are a MUST is the bedroom. I had to buy fabric from a store online instead of going to a place like Walmart to get the black out curtains, because their curtains do not black out anything. Also, I like to pair high mounted, wide mounted, and low profile (meaning closest to the wall as possible), with black out curtains, to maximize the black out ability. If you have a baby that doesn't want to take a nap, ANY light coming in will draw their eye right to that crack of light and in my case, they will not go to sleep. Anyway, I enjoyed your video. Thank you for linking some resources.
I do not agree with the ceiling to floor statement. This only looks good if the window goes all the way to the ceiling, or almost to the ceiling. Otherwise, it looks out of place to me having that big gap of wall halfway to the ceiling with no window under the top part of the drape. Looks goofy not elegant to me.
I got rid of the damn curtains & put in lovely plantation shutters! Well worth the investment. With my cat, curtains that puddle on the floor ( which pick up dirt & pet hair) are just another kitty cat sleeping bag!
I am with you! I think curtains look best when start from the ceiling and they graze (or even pool a bit) at the floor. I loved the ones you used as an example - what a gorgeous room.
This is so helpful! I’m so glad I found your channel! We have moved into our first house and there is so much to be done. Such simple tips that make such a big difference!
Watch until the end. My info "idea light" didn't kick in until 13:00 and there is a TON of great thoughts to keep in mind throughout the entire video. Thank you @TheDIYMommy! Excellent break down and thoughts.
Great tips! I have the Henny Rand curtains from IKEA, there's 4 panels but I find they don't hang well, maybe too heavy, they're 100% cotton. They just skim the floor so maybe if I brought them up about 1" they'd hang better?
@@thediymommy Thanks! They’re as high as they can go, they have grommets in them, might revisit the toilet paper roll hack, tried it with Costco rolls but they’re too big! 😀
Would be great to see decorators help people who can't afford fancy homes with big windows... let's see ways to drape small windows that are not in rooms with high ceilings. Also if your fireplace is an enclosed wood stove those pretty white curtains would need to be laundered so often that they would fall apart before winter is over. And some houses have deep window sills, I didn't see any of those in this video. But they do exist, lol!
Awesome video. Very helpful and then I subscribed to see more. 😍 I do not like pooling drapes because my dogs would mess them up. Also why I can’t really use white curtains. But I love the Celling to floor look and I am going to change my curtain rods and curtains now. Thank you.
New subscriber here 👋 I love your tips and advice. Everybody’s taste is different - I have white plantation shutters and I love their clean lines and practicality for where I live.
My husband works nights and my house faces the west so the sun heats up my living room. Black out curtains are a must for that room. We will be remodeling our home and I plan on raising my curtains but still keeping them long. If your rooms get hot black lining does come in different weight and saves you money on utilities.
Loved your tips...What do you think for super high ceilings, we have 25 foot ceilings in our great room with a row of 5 huge picture windows (facing into back yard), then a row of windows above that go almost to ceiling. I am considering ceiling to floor panels, but not sure!?! I don't want too formal of a feel, the house is transitional, my style trends to modern farm house but we've merged homes with my parents, who are traditional antique folks. So trying to blend this in the great room which is shared our most shared space and has their grand piano, and antique dining table with formal chairs and my overstuffed white couches :)
I live in Canada where we get really cold winters and so heaters are always placed right beneath the windows as they're the source of cold infiltration.... so I can't really let my curtains go to the floor without creating a fire hazard. Any solutions for that?
Same for me! I had to change my bedroom and livingroom curtains a few months ago because the heat burnt them (the bottom). That could have turned into a fire!! So, I got shorter curtains this time, so now I have no worries. Yes, longer curtains looks much better, but safety is much more important.
Thanks, this was very so helpful. I made many of the mistakes you mentioned the first time I decorated my living room 14 years ago but we are getting new lighter-colored furniture so I am getting a second chance! I have a pair of windows that flank my fireplace and the media niche above it, I was wondering what you recommend as far as the curtain rod placement outside the window well itself in inches. Maybe add 8 -10 inches or so if I have them open from the center of each window? Conversely, I could add those inches to the right for the right-sided window and to the left for the left-sided window. to define the room a little since we have an open-concept living/breakfast/kitchen area. I am so not good at this!
Personally I don't like curtains that puddle on the floor but that's just a matter of style. For my dining room and kitchen I prefer curtains that come to the edge of the window in other words the shorter curtains. In my bathroom I also have the shorter curtains but that's because my window is so high and then I have a small dresser sitting under the window. Once again it's all on how you're going to style your room. For the living room yes I prefer longer curtains that just touch the floor or maybe our 1/4 to 1/2 inch off the floor but no more. If you can get super long curtains yes put in your curtain rod up high makes your room seem taller. If you extend your curtain rods and hang your curtains more to the side you add width to your window it makes your windows appear larger also this way you can open your curtains all the way up and all of the window can be showing to let in more light which makes the room look better. But once again it's a matter of taste. And my living room curtains have vertical stripes of various shades of blue and brown. since the living room goes into the dining room then my dining room curtains are a solid blue but they are the same color of blue that is in my living room curtains. However my kitchen curtains are white. I love a nice bright white kitchen. I also have sheer curtains hanging behind my living room curtains which are also blackout curtains because I get evening Sun this way in the morning I can open up my curtains and then as the day goes on and the Sun starts coming in my windows in the living room I can slowly close the curtains. In other words about 2:00 I will pull my curtains a little bit closed about halfway which still lets him plenty of light because I have a large double window there, but in the summertime there's a lot of sun that comes directly in that window and it gets really hot so about 6:00 or 7:00 in the evening I go ahead and shut the curtains to help keep the heat out.
Pudding or touching floor makes vacuuming take longer because of having to grasp curtains to temporarily to keep them from being sucked by the vacuum. In some rooms, such as children's bedroom it is more practical to have the length come below the woodwork and not go to the floor. Practicality trumps style.
The examples shown for the perfect hanging curtains are all shown on huge almost hotel like luxury room. Of course they do look more grand as they are featured in a grand room. However, if your bedroom was small for example, would you really want huge curtains from top to bottom drowning the room with all that fabric? I understand that you wouldn't want the effect to be a flat sheet when then curtains are close, however, if you're double up the size or more to ensure lots of pleats are visible when open, then consider this will reduce the light coming into the room as the sides will be bunched up fabric.
I thought the information was great, I have a lot of trouble making up my mind on decorating and where to place things and what curtains to use. Thank you!

I personally agree with your ideas. With the exception of puddling. To me it looks sloppy and is a dirt catcher.

The "pooled" effect always looks messy to me, and it seems more suitable for a showroom than an actual living space, especially if one has pets!
@@robiny1823 I can totally picture pets curling up in the extra fabric, even if there’s only a little bit of it.
@@ferretygoodness6 Oh, wouldn't THAT just be fun? LOL
Yup, my drapes got ruined when my dog peed right there...I had to wash them and the fabric shrunk. 😭
I would need therapy for the longest time if that ever happened to me! 🕷😱
Awe, you poor thing. Spiders scare the bejeezus out of me so I completely understand!
!! Yikes !!
I have to turn on my baseboard heaters for a minimum of five months a year. Pooling drapes only works part of the time and then I either have to gather them up that really looks weird, or get shorter curtains. I am opting for the shorter.
@@pbondcasa You are right. Also baseboard and floor registers, when the heating/cooling come from under the window you don't want long curtains.
I have never been a fan of this look where the curtains pool at the floor. They never struck me as being romantic but rather just plain ole messy.
Right. Why make it easy for mice n bugs to use your curtains.or get them dirty? They look better a few inches off the floor.
Perhaps not a couple of inches, but 3/4". Curtains which touch the floor collect dust like crazy and if you have white, it goes grey!
And, IMO, pretentious.
They get caught in the vacuum cleaner.
When closed, they cover your heat/cooling source when it comes from under the window.
Great tips! I follow them all, but you forgot one: A lot of people have small windows that aren’t very wide. A common mistake is not hanging the curtains far out enough. Mounting the curtains much wider than the windows will make the window look larger. Thank you for your great videos! I really look forward to them. ❤️
Spot on
oh yeah, those garage-type windows especially! little rectangles that they are... I bet there's a way to make those look a lot better.
Yes! My home was built in 1921, so I have small windows. How wide would you suggest I mount the rod? That is what you're referring to, right?!
How far away from the window or wall do you recommend the curtain rod to be mounted?
Thank you for sharing your ideas. ♥
Yes! You should always decorate for YOU. Thank you!

THE FIRST VIDEO THAT COVERS EVERYTHING!!!! Not just width and length! THANK YOU!!!
There is a reason why they sell short curtains that fall down to the windowsill, called apron/windowsill curtains. That is actually a style on its own, and second, those are used when you have to put furniture against a wall like a desk, for example, but the curtains would be in the way if they were longer.
And.... cafe curtains
@@esat189 Yes and those too. Thanks for mentioning them.
I prefer blinds or shades when there's furniture in front of a window, but if you love shorter curtains then you should use them! 😊
And long curtains cover the radiators which sit under windows. So no heat can get into the room
@@monicacharles6723 definitely! Iong curtains scrunched behind a radiator look hideous.

You are right Beverly. I believe this DYI Mommy is living in a perfect world. I was not impressed by her "know it all" attitude.
Thank you so much for sharing!
"trashy" and "childish"... Wow.
@@WhitMcMo think this runs deeper then the curtains!

Are you the ghost of my drapery making mom? 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
It doesn’t matter what style home you have or how tall the ceilings are. The concepts still apply.
My most favorite curtains I ever had were actually tablecloths from Zellers years ago . A buttery yellow the same color as the wall with rose florals. The length was perfect with clip on rings! They looked so professional but so easy!
Those sound beautiful!
Your favorites were just like mine!
I lived in California and the sun shone through the yellow curtains beautifully!
Good idea 💡 but if I went to to buy, in guessing I couldn't find many.. I havent seen tablecloths in a long long time, maybe a European source?...
I actually love looking at my curtains backlit from the light inside. The floral looks awesome with my 1950s cottage.
Curtains dampen noise in a room the thicker the better.
I’ve been involved with development of multi family housing. It’s always been a requirement that the exterior window coverings are neutral. Colored exteriors showing just looks awful. You can do whatever on the inside. Sheers work to keep the outside looking cohesive but the need to be full enough.
Thanks for this. It gave me, a 68-year-old straight man flying solo, the confidence to do the windows in my new condo. They came out great!
So happy to hear this!
It's really all about personal preference and whatever is the current fad
@@monicawarner4091 absolutely this. to me it screams 'I'm trying to make my windows look bigger' but in reality makes it look like the curtain rail is in the wrong pace.

When I see curtains hanging too high from the window I notice two things...
1) Perhaps the home owner doesn't know how to sew
2) The curtains are redefining the scale of windows that were defined for the room to look balanced.
I do think curtains can frame windows well, but it seems odd to frame a block of blank wall above the windows....
I like how you get right to the point.

Totally. It's not practical at all to have curtains touching the floor if you have dogs or kids. Or if you have furniture under the window.
I agree. If the curtains can be 6'' from the ceiling then 8'' from floor looks good for my needs.

God bless you darling,
Mona
I personally like shorter curtains that fall just below the window sill. It's practical and easy. My parents have long drapes in their living room and when it comes to drawing the curtains at night it's always an annoying process because right in front of the curtains are a table and a large armchair. The curtains are too large. For practical reasons I prefer shorter curtains....so much easier to manage. Less dust too.
same here. i like curtains just below the window sill.
I have a heat register right below my windows, cannot have curtains over this.
Love your post! I just bought new curtains for two major windows. I was beginning to think may I should swap them, but I just wanted my windows covered, but didn’t want them to drag the floor. Those get in the way in numerous ways. Glad to see😢 some with an opinion like mine.
Yes I do too!
I like to save my patterns for bedspreads and upholstery, while keeping the curtains neutral and blending with walls making small rooms look larger.
What about kitchen windows? Is it better for a single curtain or the top and bottom (not sure name) ?
@@amandamiller945 cover areas of the kitchen window where you think someone might look in whether low or high , or if the window is overlooking a garden or private back yard, a simple valance or no curtain would work.
So don't get curtains that match the furniture?
Yes! If you want to change up the room, you can just change an area rug or throw pillows!
I love the green floral draperies and the fact that there are enough windows to make them a major contributor to the whole look of that lovely room.

When they aren't looking I straighten the crooked frames. 😁
@@bonniegirl5138 - oh my gosh, so do I! I've even gone as far as to clean a dirty toilet, lol... I am so OCD about certain things, lol
@@LindaKayHolevas I'll have to have you over. My bathroom needs work. 😄
My pictures are low since I'm short.
I straighten pictures everywhere I go if I can. Crooked pictures drive me crazy.
Deb here. Another mistake is not allowing a wide enough rod. When you open your curtains, you want the curtain not covering most of your window.
If curtains are to short you can add different color fabric to the top or bottom to add length. If they are not wide enough again add fabric to the sides. Just make sure, when you add the fabric it is large enough to balance the curtains out. 🙂
Good idea!
If you know how to sew. I wasn't fortunate enough to ever learn.
@@Donna-vh5ym you can always cut the material and glue the sides and top and bottom.
@@heartslessons6243 // Great idea. What about when you wash them? Will it still hold, or do I re-use fabric glue?

Long curtains do look better. However, living in UK, if you have central heating radiators, they are almost always sited under windows. This means longer curtains when closed, cover radiators keeping expensive heat next to windows . Only solution is short curtains
Good gracious! This is nothing but an ad for Ikea!
Your curtain advice is spot on Christina. And Ikea is my go-to for many options for longer panels too.
Silly me. I always thought curtains touching the floor meant the decorator was incapable of using a tape measure!
L.m.b.o!
Yes, ultimately you need to do what's best for you and your home.
I loved her kitchen curtains 🤷♀️
Waiting for someone to talk about curtain length with baseboard heaters. Thanks for sharing 🙏
Rods, if you need a sheer, if you want the rod to show, how many panels you need ……
Thanks.

I would have to see a photo of it to know, but generally a higher and wider rod with nice, full curtains looks lovely!
I prefer neutral. I do love the black & white curtains in your dining room though. You are so good at what you do. I love your videos.👏
I hate puddling. So tacky snd dirty looking
Thank you so much for your wisdom. I'm currently building and I'm up to organising blinds, curtains etc.😊

Great tips! I have the Henny Rand curtains from IKEA, there's 4 panels but I find they don't hang well, maybe too heavy, they're 100% cotton. They just skim the floor so maybe if I brought them up about 1" they'd hang better?
Yes, that might work! Or try hanging them differently at the top? I love the look of pleater hooks or back loops.

I really appreciate your help! Drapes and curtains are an issue for me
Would be great to see decorators help people who can't afford fancy homes with big windows... let's see ways to drape small windows that are not in rooms with high ceilings.
Thank you.

My husband works nights and my house faces the west so the sun heats up my living room. Black out curtains are a must for that room.
I would probably do some sort of different window treatment like Roman shades!
@@thediymommy Sounds like it would be a great new video idea. 🙂

Windowsill curtains, roman shades or roller shades and such styles.
Curtains puddling on the floor will get eaten by the robovac 🤣😂😱
Love long curtains but have base heating that cannot be covered.
I thought the information was great, I have a lot of trouble making up my mind on decorating and where to place things and what curtains to use. Thank you!
