In the video you mention Ty Cobb having the highest batting average in history. He does have the highest career batting average in history, but the highest single season batting average belongs to Hugh Duffy, who hit .440 in 1894
(There’s some reports of players having a higher batting average before that, but those came from leagues who’s stats aren’t as trustworthy because they weren’t recorded as reliably)
Love your work and the video ❤
The tagline of The Kiln is a pun, as a Kiln a type of oven that is used in pottery to turn soft clay hard. The process of hardening clay in a kiln is called kiln firing, so kilns in both real life and Gungeon fire pots
The stuffed star may also be a reference to The Legendary Starfy, which features a similarly roundish star with 2 blue eyes (And the cutest character in gaming history)
The bionic leg might also be a reference to the 6 million dollar man, an old tv show where a man is rebuilt with bionic implants that give him superhuman abilities
With the mention of participation of “Proof of participation in the democratic process” in the description of The Ballot makes me think that the item is a reference to a famous speech given by American civil rights activist Malcom X, where he compared ballots to bullets, and urged black Americans to vote, saying “If we don’t cast a ballot, it’s gonna end up in a situation where we’re going to have to cast a bullet”
The tagline for Brick of Cash being “The secret of the masons” is a play on words. Masons is the title of people who work with bricks. There is also the Freemasons, a secret society that is at the center of a bunch of conspiracy theories
The Hunter’s past is *also* a reference to Frankstein and Frankenstein’s monster
Who could forget that iconic scene where Clerval used a sticky crossbow to defeat the monster :)
@@SirToastyToes mary shelley was trully ahead of her time.
WAIT MARY 'SHELL'EY???
@@flickerinfinite8668 You've learned too much. *gun click* EEEEEEEEEEEEEENTER THE GUNGEON
No shit
57:16 "The Kiln" might be an anagram of link but a kiln is also an appliance used for pottery which bakes the pottery so it's hard. Kilns literally fire pots.
I knew that Gungeon had a lot of references in it, but didn't know that, like, 90% of anything present in the game is actually a direct homage to something else
It probably should also be mentioned that the Triple Gun's quote "Bullet the Stampede" is a play on the main character of Trigun's full name, Vash the Stampede
I always knew someone would eventually cover all the references and I gotta say you did a great job. Nice presentation and kept a good pace while still giving each reference their due time.
I thought the gundromeda strain could also be a reference to nuclear throne's "scarier face" mutation, which has the effect of reducing the enemy's health, but also having crystal's face in the sprite
i did too
Actually really like Andromeda Strain so it was a pleasant surprise
The Ammonomicon description of the Blobulon mentions a disastrous winter campaign through a particularly cold region of space, which is in reference to Napoleon's failed campaign of Rusaia
I'd like to mention that the R&G Department floor has a couple of references in its name. There's the reference to R&D, Research and Development, a department of game studios, as well as RNG, which stands for random number generation, something that Gungeon features very heavily, being a rougelike game. It is also possible that R&G stands for "run and gun," referring to the gameplay of Gungeon, even though Gungeon is not actually a run and gun game in the genre sense.
also, ironically, the R&G floor is the only floor with no RNG when the floor is generated. room drops still have a chance of dropping, but otherwise all rooms generate the same
1:04:21 The tagline "What Army?" is probably a dual reference to "you and what army?" and real life Army Ants.
I also think the pinkness of the pink elephants that the elephant gun shoots in the synergy is highely likely a reference to the Pink Elephant sequence in Dumbo
1:04:51 - Alien Engine is a reference to Super Mutant Alien Assault. The engine's color scheme and attack method are strong indications of it's obscure origin.
For the Siren’s “Brave New World” synergy, I believe the name may partially be a reference to the famous line given by the character of Miranda in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the line being “Oh, wonder! How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, that has such people in ‘t!”
It’s worth commenting that Miranda is meeting other humans for the first time, hence the line. There is also a character in the play named Ariel, and the line is used for the title of Aldous Huxley’s novel “Brave New World.”
I looked it up and saw this info wasn’t on the wiki, so I wanted to share here! Great work on the video!
I'm not 100% sure of this, but the Casey could also be an homage to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles character Casey Jones, someone who uses sport equipment as armor and weaponry. While he prefers a hockey stick he is also seen with a baseball bat on multiple occasions
i watched all of this, and I am completely sure that this absolute mad lad,
managed to find AT MOST 80% of the references in this game
This feels like the content I knew I wanted from ETG UA-camrs, but didn’t know I wanted. Thank you so much, ToastyToes!
Hey I remember you
@@Markm8 Wow, I haven’t done anything in a long time so that’s a surprise! Thank you though ^^
2:00 "resonance cascade by the combine"
Thank you for taking the time to point out the reference to every single one of them I did enjoy being surprised myself, but it’s good to see a detailed explanation of each and every item and and weapon
I feel like 'marine' could be a specific reference to the ultramarines, as it's blue, but could also just be a reference to space marines overall.
My favorite reference is the sound garden reference from the black hole gun, with the description being “won’t you come “
i always thought the link-a-like character wanted a map because (at least in my experience watching my mom and dad play ocarina of time) you actually had to get a notebook and keep track of the dungeon you were in for fear of being lost, you literally had to craft your own map
The silencer is ironic because it shoots out flash hider, another muzzle attachment
The Lil' Bomber's shape may also be a reference to the Loose Cannon weapon from Team Fortress 2.
"the big shotgun is a reference to real life shotguns, which in comparison to this one are typically smaller, making this one a big one relatively speaking"
Truly enlightening words of wisdom.
Aside from that, I had already noticed a good amount of the MGS references and figured that the devs were fans since there were way more than they would have been "obligated" to put in. But damn, those guys must be absolutely obsessed!
Bit of a nitpick regarding the Sprun item (because I'm a pedantic Sanderson fan). The spren from Stormlight Archive don't turn into radiants themselves, but make other people into radiants. They also only do so when the person accomplishes various feats, which Gungeon references by having the various activation conditions for the Sprun. The part of the ammonomicon mentioning bridge delivery and maintenance, is a reference to one of the main characters of The Way of Kings being a bridgerunner, a soldier whose only purpose is carrying bridges to help other (more important) soldiers across cliffs.
"Life sucks and and then you're jammed" also harkens to Life's a Bitch by Nas in all likelihood.
I woulda said the connection is too tenuous but that is one of those bars everyone and everything seems to reference.
I always thought that the really special lute might be a reference to Crypt of the necrodancer considering there's a magical lute that can revive enemies in that game. I might be wrong though considering there's no express nod in the description
I also thought it looked suspiciously like the Golden Lute but like you said no really explicit connection
Seeing a reference to the Chandrian was so out of left field. Even in retrospect, not that much literature is specifically mentioned compared to everything else, and it so happens to be a book I read AFTER I played Gungeon for the first time? Insane.
Also worth mentioning that the cold 45 or smth like that don't remember what the combination of numbers where has another pun/reference in the Spanish dub of the game, since the original joke can't really be translated to Spanish the description of the item instead now reads "¡ay, carámbano!" which is a reference to Bart Simpsons catch phrase "¡ay, caramba!" and also a word play with "carámbano" which would roughly translate to icicle
First you bedazzle one of my favorite Pokémon of all time(Scizor), then you cover every reference in one of my top 5 favorite games of all time. I’m loving this
the delorean in convicts past isnt a reference to back to the future, jacket from hotline miami drives a delorean
the comm4nd0 is also a reference to commando, another arnie movie, where he fires a 4 barrel rocket launcher.
Though this probably isn't intentional, Demon's Souls isn't the only From Software game referenced by Old King. It could also be seen as a reference to Old King from Armored Core For Answer, one of the NEXT pilots working for the ORCA brigade and leader of the Liliana Insurgency group. He is most known for hiring the player in one of the game's three story paths to help him destroy the cradles, floating cities housing millions of people.
I can't imagine how much work this must have taken. Incredible work!
It's cool to hear some of these references. For the Casey bat my head went to Casey Jones from TMNT. But I havent played earthbound or read the poem before lol.
2:01 in half life you play as gordon freeman (a scientist at black mesa) and push a crystal into a big laser thing and directly cause the resonance cascade. The combine aren't relevant until half life 2
This has had to be an insane amount of work. Thanks for this!
I love how much effort you put into this video i cant imagine how long it took to write the script. Its crazy how you find even the slightest refrences in synergies, yet you still missed some. Not hating its just crazy how many refrences ETG has. W video.
I just wanna say the cog of battle just makes me so happy im a huge gears of war fan
2:04 Slight corrections here: It's definitely a reference to Half-Life, as the Interdimensional Horror's sprites internally are an intentional misspelling of "Nihilanth", the final boss of Half-Life. Additionally, the Resonance Cascade was caused by Black Mesa, not the Combine. The enemies summoned by the Interdimensional Horror are also very clearly based on DOOM enemies, so there's likely inspiration from both in the events that play out here.
thanks to the union mimic chest we know that mimics do in fact work together
Cracked at least 200+ hours on Switch. My favorite roguelike. Maybe there’ll be a sequel one day…
there is, kinda
Exit the gungeon. Though I don't like it that much
21:13 love kirby and love the kirby reference
thank god you mentioned the Big Shotgun's reference to being a Shotgun but Big
Good day to you sir, and thank you for your profound undertaking! Just as a modest correction (and in case no one else has brought it up yet), one of the Winchester's synergies is a a reference to the zombie movie, Shaun of the Dead, in which you can find the Winchester Pub. Also, in addition to the book 'Swords and Deviltry,' the tag line Guns & Deviltry also refers to the Winchester Brothers of the hit CW show Supernatural, who combat demons with guns, knives, and occult rites.
I always assumed “Casey” was a reference to Casey Jones’ weapon of choice in the TMNT series.
Never knew about Casey and the bat though.
The more you know!
The "suuuuuper" in the ammonimicon entry for the super hot watch si the main gag ofFranky from one piece
hope this gets some traction! you've obviously put a huge amount of effort into it, and it's a great watch.
I'm pretty sure the graffiti on the wall also has a reference to The Dark Knight Returns. Bots don't shiv is similar to what the mutants say in the final fight of part 1, "Batman don't shiv".
Whatever part of your brain controls the nerd in you just exploded violently for me, anyone else?
The elephants from that synergy is definitely also a reference to dumbo
42:26 As an avid TF2 fan, I genuinely do not see how this could be a reference to the TF2 cosmetic. I think it's just something someone made up and slapped on the wiki.
There is a room in the oubliette with 4 pillars in the center, and spawns a bullet kin and a nitra. This is a reference to the revolver ocelot battle in mgs1, with the bullet kin standing in for Ocelot and the nitra representing the explosives the president is strapped to.
Well made video with insane editing. Bless you for this channel sir
The game itself is like a tropey action movie and it works so well
Good job on documenting all these references.
The tag line for the potion of lead skin can also be a reference to heavy from tf2
Guh
Ngeon
In one of the alien engines synergies, it changes appearance, which looks extremely similar to the alien tech in the aliens franchise
Also, Apprentice Gunjurers may be a reference to the cultists in Realm of the Mad God
During your part covering the Corsair gun, you forgot to mention that it's also possibly a reference to the computer fan company Corsair who uses a boat with large masts and sails in their logo.
Lot of very specific, non-obvious Pokemon references, and a ton of Metal Gear Solid references.
Small bonus, in Metal Gear Solid and onwards, cigarettes also decrease scoped bobbing. Working as "free" Diazepam
there is gun that says using under the table reference to star wars and han shooting from under the table
this gives off such a melancholy feel. perfect video for a broken heart. so long, my love
300 dead count on the silencer is also likely a reference to 300 AAC blackout, a real life cartridge primarily intended to be used with a silencer.
Probably not the first or last to say this but the Full Metal Jacket item is also probably a reference to a type of bullet where the bullet is covered in a harder metal than its inside allowing it to keep its shape and permit higher muzzle velocity when fired
The name of the gun "Gunther" is a reference to the gun store "Gunther's Guns" in "All Sunny in Philadelphia"
This video looks like it took a lot of time. I liked it so, good job on the tons of effort!
8:34 in the description of the sword says Betrayer
reminds me of Halo but in Halo it says Betrayal
Com4nd0 is also a refference to the movie Commando. Arnie shoots a bunch of people with that 4 barelled rocket launcher.
18:52 That's a rock fact.
yeaaa lemme just watch this feature film real quick
56:35
An animal that wasn't a chicken laid the first egg
44:35 Also possibly a reference to the iconic Bird Up skit from the Eric Andre Show
The Machine Fist's tagline is another FF7 reference, since Avalanche is the group that Barrett is a part of.
Um actually, in regards to the Way of Gun/Windgunner, the spren (honorspren in this case) don't turn into the Windrunner, the person they bond to does (given they give the proper Oaths).
Dueling pistol's synergy name can be a reference to an anime Hellsing. One of the antagonists uses it in the duel against Alukard.
small thing but ammoconda and the snake boss from link to the past in the second dungeon have the same death animation
Amazing job man thanks a lot
Surprised this isn't a 10 hour video.
Also the honeycomb's line "Bee Prepared" could be a reference to the disney song of the same name, minus the bee pun.
You absolute madman. Great video😂
52:11 the only reference I found unmentioned: the Beta Ray synergy is a reference to another Marvel character, Beta Ray Bill
5:53 That is Maximilian from The Black Hole.
I was Actually thinking about doing this video myself I quickly searched it to figure out if anybody else had done it yet and here I am watching a much better video than I could ever make absolute banger video dude good work
Well into an hour of this video I decided I should probably go play this game
A missed reference with the loot bag is that losing money when shot was once a planned feature for Payday 2.
So much work, thumbs up...
the disintegrator also looks a lot like the nerf dart tag swarmfire
Great video. I will watch this a dozen times as I fall asleep to your buttery voice
YES, this is the part I love so much about this game, learning about so many different shows from looking these references up was such a boost in learning pop culture g fry or me.
You get a fucking 10/10 for the high caliber synergy name pronunciations alone 😂😂
No, the marines alt costume is just Solaire
Great work
Well, guess my next 2 and a half hours are set
finally I don't have to scour the wiki anymore, I'll just have to rewatch this whole video when I forget about a reference
So which game series is most heavily referenced? I would assume it has to either be Zelda or Metal Gear
I also noticed that the Bomb Companion App has a striking resemblance to the Pip-Boy from the Fallout series!
I'm only a few mins in and I can say, good work with this, Sir Toasty! Can I suggest that the Convict's Past may also be a reference to Scarface?
The Origuni "1000 cuts" is also a reference to paper cuts, and the legend that a man folding 1000 paper cranes would get a wish granted
Doing the lords work
