I haven't flat ironed my hair since 2011. My hair is waist length and healthy. I shampoo and condition weekly. I keep up with my trims. I don't use extensions, wigs, or weaves. I style my hair in twists for the week and twist out for church on Sunday. I don't like bone straight hair, but for those that want it, go ahead and do you. I remember when folks were running to get a Brazilian blowout. Later, we saw the damage it caused.

Great topic. I think women need to spend more time on self education instead of relying on stylist to maintain the health of their hair. It’s important to understand your hair from a holistic view, recognizing that your hair is a direct reflection of your diet, just like your skin and your weight.
Personally, my diet is based on my O+ blood type and my hair/beauty practices are related to my region of ancestry & culturally related beauty practices. Don’t be afraid to research and experiment.

I know heat damages my hair and that I sweat like a banshee and bat just out of hell 🤣😂😅🙈 and I swim regularly...it makes no sense for me to be a straight hair natural on a regular basis. Some people want their edges straight all the time. They’re straightening that area daily. It comes at a cost. The old folks used to say they were burning their hair out. Low heat with texture is the way to go. Back in the day most FBA were straight naturals. They pressed their hair and it was fine. Only the people who insisted on having straight edges had a problem.

    • @CoffeeCuties777

In the summer they would press their hair everyday. This was especially true if it rained. They would wash their hair every two months, but touch-up with the pressing comb on dirty hair. The natural came out, but older ladies didn’t embrace it.

I was a blow dry natural in 2022. I had a toddler so I was trying to keep my weekly wash days to one day, start to finish, instead of two. That lasted for 8 months. My hair broke off, I had a ton of single strand knots, and my hair became very hard to manage. And keep in mind, I never used the flat iron and my coils always returned. I had to cut a significant amount off and went into nursing my remaining hair back to health, while trimming away the left over damage a little at a time. Heat damage shows up in a lot of different ways.

I give my self a silk press weekly and my hair has adapted to humidity without reverting (in Texas). Today I have a wash and go and the curls are beautiful..I been doing this for 3 years. I have 3b hair so I’m not sure nothing happens to my hair. It’s per individual I think. I had severely low vitamin d levels though after treatment my hair is no longer dry. And it’s bra strap length if that helps. Also, I flat iron once a week and the rest of the week is satin rollers for the blow out look.

    • @denyshadials5702
      @denyshadials5702 3 дні тому +7

It is based on the individual’s care routine, the hair’s integrity, curl pattern, and genetic disposition for handling heat.
Though, generally, the tighter the curl pattern, the more heat has to be used to get the hair straight. Then, for those who need the most heat, damaging it is often the only way for it to stay straight. So there’s several factors involved.
I’ll also say, most people don’t agree on what actually equates as heat damage, which is a whole other can of worms. For me, it’s the comparison of your hair texture before heat was a regular routine and after it became routine. No more no less; I hardly take anyone at just their word. There are others who believe that, as long as some form of curl pattern reverts back, then it’s not damaged. It’s a very wide range.
So the perspective of ‘damage’ depends on the individual as well.

I think I commented before on here that I was a straight haired natural back in 2009-2016. I feel Portia’s sisters pain. Your hair definitely will get damaged with being a straight haired natural. And ppl please know there is nothing that can bring your hair back from heat damaged hair except to cut it off and start with your new growth. Your hair growth also won’t come from an oil in a bottle it comes from your diet and being mindful to not putting a bunch of stuff on your scalp. Better understand that if u choose to be a heat styled natural that it will take effect on your hair and scalp slowly but surely. When I see these ladies talk about wanting to become a heat trained natural I just say to myself you’ll be finding out what I know already real soon😳

    • @KLT828

Just to reiterate there is NOTHING you can do to heal your natural hair after it has been damaged by all that heat. The hair thins, breaks and you can get bald spots. Giving everyone reading this a serious warning. I have seen this and experienced it for myself. It took about 2 yrs for my hair to get back to normal but I had to go through my hair looking busted wearing braidouts etc….. my hair was so fragile and thinned out. I loved my straight hair but I was like my hair is changing for the worse because I won’t embrace my curly coils. I guess I could be considered a straight natural. I've been wearing my hair mostly straight for the past 3 years and my curls are still popping. The problem with the straight hair naturals of today is over reliance on flat irons. You can stretch your hair doing rollersets, flexi rod sets, perm rod sets etc or just by learning a good blow dry technique. In addition, what this person was doing was using heat to style and restyle the hair over and over for different scenes. Beyonce's mom came out years ago and talked about how that type of thing thinned and broke Beyonce's hair. The average woman should not be doing this. And definitely experiment with round brush blow outs and wet sets to reduce flat iron usage.

Yeah I clocked how Beyonce switched up her hair....wigs, ponytails, braids and her own natural hair. She stopped wearing her hair bone straight all of the time. So if Beyonce on a yacht in the Mediterranean with some box braids ( not boho) and curly-kinky hair who the heck do I think I am with over-elaborate and labour-intensive hair. I feel like thats the problem people are just blow drying their hair and silk pressing it either daily or every 2 days, when ur supposed to stretch that silk press out every week or 2, either or, without proper care and their healthcare is not up to pair, i notice men with hair don't have this problem as much, i also feel like women are not talking about or being truthful in their routines and end up cutting corners, with a lot of products they use, which all comes into play in the long run and then the relaxers that all ads up and perms too, and lack of working out too,
So simply watch what u eat, Workout, watch what u do to ur hair urself, and go to Professionals about ur hair and health like the Auntie hairstyles who have experience, and doctors for check ups that relates to ur hair and health especially black doctors and do critical research dont follow the latest trends without testing it 1st, i notice that their are more hair straightening products that can strengthen ur hair without to much heat, certain hair straightening tools were meant for white women cuz their hair can handle it not ours kinky hair and last of all proper matinence

My hair is fine, I can get heat damage at 425, so I stick to being a stretched natural/ blow dry natural with a smoothing treatment until I get a trim at the salon to straighten it. But the reason I keep it stretched is for length retention. Keeping it in a stretched state reduces breakage because I get way less single strand knots.
Honestly, I can understand straight naturals because wearing it pressed out gives me the most amount of length retention and the least amount of breakage, but I don't want to lose my texture completely. Way back in the day my friend was a straight natural with fine strands just like me and her hair was waist length. She just had no curl pattern left.

@ Agreed! We all have the capability to “straighten” our hair. So wearing a texture similar to what your hair would like straightened shouldn’t be a problem. But even when I wear 3c/4a half wigs many don’t believe it’s my natural texture until I show them my leave out.. So that’s always very interesting. I’m under the impression that some people are projecting when they use the word dependency. We all should have the freedom to switch up. A person that is switching up their hairstyle from time to time isn’t always obsessed with wigs or depending on them. A lot of women have beautiful hair under that wig. They just want something different from time to time and that’s okay.

So when people try to be shady by saying wear something that matches your texture and they do it’s just not what y’all wanted to be then what.. because the women that have looser curls still get questioned if that’s their natural curl pattern, etc

This is what works for *ME.* If people want to assume that I don't love myself-simply because I wear my hair straight-that says a lot more about them, then it does about me 🤷🏽‍♀️

I'm neurodivergent. I've never been able to stick to the status quo or give in to peer pressure. My brain just won't allow anything that doesn't make any sense to me. Not saying this is right but if no-one can sit down and explain to me in detail how, why, what, where and when for a particular hairstyle, then it's not worth my autistic spoons to be hyperfocusing on my hair. I cut off half last summer 2023 and did zero styling because the cut was the style. I didn't even use gel because my hair curls/coils with daily leave-in conditioner and I don't care about shrinkage especially when it's hot outside! in winter I wear wigs to keep my head warm Lol!

Liquid iron is nowhere near as effective as the pill supplements you can get from the pharmacy. But definitely consult with your medical provider first.

What I’ve noticed is that you have to rice water and do protein treatments (fenugreek) to have that flawless silk press. Hair needs this coating to withstand heat. Silk press isn’t for weak hair

I have to look more into fenugreek but rice water can cause protein overload so I definitely would pay attention to how it reacts to your hair and yea silk presses are not for weak or damaged hair🤎

I have weak hair...but I do not be blowdrying or flat ironing my hair every week. I sweat a lot naturally and due to perimenopause and I swim and go to the spa every week so not much point doing all that heat for half the week.

@@CoffeeCuties777 I make my rice water and add aloe Vera juice to it. I have high porosity hair. It’s wonderful! Yeah fenugreek I soak it for a few days, blend and sift it. It made my low density hair look voluminous with one use. Hope this helps someone

My opinion and I don’t know much of her and how she treats her hair on a daily basis, only my assumptions from seeing her in public… she lives in Atlanta, a pretty warm/humid climate, she makes appearances to events maybe often, and those two points alone make me believe she over processes her hair for an image. I use heat and blow dry my hair with every wash, if I straighten my hair and it gets frizzy, bigger, or wavy, it doesn’t bother me. I let it be. She may want her image to be bone straight and to match her extensions. I think there is a certain way to manage using heating tools and also using proper hair care (protein treatments, leave in conditioner, etc)

How often was she using heat and changing styles? This is too much of a nuanced conversation to just flat out say heat is the main culprit. Do we know her diet? Her hair practices outside of heat styling (i.e. scalp oiling, trims etc)? Hair care isnt complicated but, some people do too much yet not enough at the same time. Just wash and condition your hair. Use heat in the manner suitable for your hair type. If you have finer hair may be only use heat 1-2x per month. Make sure to use a decent heat protectant and dont set your iron at pits of hell hot. Most importantly make sure you have enough nutrients. Her hair looks like its broken off but also somewhat thinned out and i doubt thats mainly from heat.

I agree it’s more nuance and though we don’t know for certain all the reasons her hair was damaged she did state herself heat and manipulation was 2 of the causes. I’m not saying heat used correctly is bad but I am saying we should be aware of all the possible damage heat could cause so we can make the best informed decision when using it🤎
