I know 2 working moms who did this. It was just easier for them to wear a wig. My mom was a working mom who was never interested in wearing her natural hair or helping us two daughters wear our natural hair. We had to go and figure it out by ourselves.

My sister wore a wig to the ER. She had to get a cat scan done. About 5 nurses came in to calmly talk her in to taking off the wig. My sister removed it without hesitation. The nurses said they did not expect her to willingly take off the wig. They explained how most women leave the hospital when requested to remove the wig. Regardless of the medical emergency, most women do not want to remove the wig! Let that sink in... I agree that there is a disconnect...

I live in the UK, wigs have them in a chokehold over here....I rotate my styles and I get the most compliments on my natural styles even if I wear kinky extensions. I don't know what it is because I was raised in the Caribbean so I'm used to seeing and wearing my natural hair and everyone around me's natural hair. However living in the UK, I met few black women who wore their natural hair. Relaxer, press, braids, straight or wavy or curly weave or wigs. That's it. I had kinky twist extensions and a lot of people (of all races) were coming up to me saying they loved my hair and asking questions about it. I had a fro-hawk last year with bleach blond highlights and a half fade with designs. People loved my hair then too because few black women wear their hair like that in London, one of the fashion capitals of the world!

Before I was married and had my daughter, I used to run to the stylist and drop hundreds of dollars every month getting back to back hair weaves. The weaves ruined my hair and left me with permanent thinning. Now that I am older, married and consider my daughter when making decisions, I literally can’t bring myself to wear anymore wigs or weaves. I would be doing a disservice to my daughter if she didn’t see me wearing my own hair. Plus, I have nieces that look up to me and I have a responsibility to show them that their own hair is beautiful. Nowadays, I keep my hair cut short in a cute pixie cut and I love it!! I began seeing it as an issue in our community when women and girls started wearing lace front wigs. I think it looks like clownery, and people are laughing at it. The “baby hair”detached from the wig which starts in the middle of the forehead is also ridiculous. I can’t wait until this lacefront trend goes away! I do understand that some people have alopecia and other illnesses which take out hair, but there are wigs that look less like costumes that can be worn.

Wigs took my mother's hair out in the '60s and '70s in England...now wigs, gel and edge control are attacking my sibling's edges in America. I wear wigs.....I wear them 24 days out of 365! I wear Kinky twist extensions 12 weeks out of 52. I spoke to my trichologists and my stylists and they finally told me what to do and what not to do with my hair and scalp and extensions, wigs and straightening are not it for me on a regular basis! I wear my afro, flat twists, twists, finger coils, 2 or 3 french braids or a silk or satin headscarf/head wrap. I remember when wigs and weaves and presses were a special occasion thing...now the girlies wear them every day without a break as a status symbol because they have "cash to flash". One of the biggest false equivalences being that "White Women wear weave and wigs too". First of all, most WW wear some form of extensions, not weave or wigs. They are not braiding up their hair and putting a wig cap over it and then putting hair on top of that or sewing hair onto their scalp. Secondly, they wear extensions that MATCH their own TEXTURE. You will never catch a WW hiding her natural hair from the world so she can put afro hair on top of her head. It isn't even remotely similar to what BW do.

I also think the braiding is a problem because most make th braids to resemble long straight hair. I believe that difference is observable in the frequency that wigs are/are not worn, not just what an individual claims. Where there is dependency is almost always a missed opportunity to care for your real hair.
Where there’s dependency is almost always some lack of self-esteem.
Where there is dependency, there’s almost always significant damage happening at the scalp.

Being loved starts within.. I used to feel real down on myself seeing all those black dudes in the 2010s titled "why I don't date black women" or "I hate black women". That affected my self esteem and my reality and being left behind for someone non black. I went on searching for love outside of myself and never got it, until I realized that I have to love me and see the beauty within me before anyone can see the same. I still struggle with my hair, it's literally the last hump of insecurity Im really trying to let go of. But I went natural in 2011 but never fully accepted my hair without throwing a wig on it. But I have freeform dreads now that I started 2 months ago. I think they're cute but I'm afraid of what they look like when they get longer but I'm willing to accept my hair regardless if it's considered beautiful and socially acceptable to the world. Kuz like I said early, I'd have to love my hair first as it is truly. I wanted "neat" manicured locs but I knew that was just me trying to fit the mold. I'm choosing to be unacceptable and go against the beauty standard by creating my own. The truth is, they're jealous of us and they wish they were us. And like a bully, they tell you lies to make you believe you're deserving of the bad treatment. When they're the ones with the lowest self esteem

A lot of people call it self hate but is it also self hate when biracial women constantly wear their hair straight instead of curly to appeal to their other side and to increase their chances of white passing. Hence, Meghan Markle who has expressed that she gets keratin treatments because her naturally curly hair is just too much to manage. And I know someone is going to say well we aren’t talking about them.
Which I understand but a lot of biracial women identify as Black and are in Black spaces. I just mentioned that because some have stated why are Black women straightening their natural hair and it’s questionable why are we the only ones that are condemned. To be honest that should be applied across the board to any ethnicity with naturally textured hair.

I see where she’s coming from. However, I would think that her being a Black woman would understand what other Black women have to go through in this world. Every time I scroll on Twitter I come across a bunch of trolls arguing with others telling Black women that they look like men with their natural hair, making fun of their hair texture, saying it looks “unkempt,” etc.
It feels like the world is constantly gaslighting Black women and unfortunately I think some Black women participate in it as well. Society needs to learn to accept all hair textures and not just the type 3’s or silky 4a’s and super long 4c hair. But the big, full, and thick short 4c hair. Until then some women are going to continuously do what they have to do to survive. But let’s not act like a certain hair texture isn’t condemned that grows out of Black women’s scalp.

The way she wore it was unkempt. And they definitely make 4c hair extensions. If you can wear the silky straight you can wear your texture wigs. People who have a headful of hair, that never wear their hair out, and always has it hidden under weaves or not so protective styles, either hate their hair, or they don't know how to do their hair, or maintain it on a daily basis. Talking about heat damage is a copout. You don't have to use heat to maintain your hair. you can learn how to use heat so it wont damage your hair, etc. you dont need wigs/weaves/added hair to "grow" hair.

I agree with a few of her talking points. However, I always pause whenever someone says they are not wearing their natural hair texture whenever they wear a wig. I’m starting to think that a lot of Black people believe that only a certain aesthetic of women have 4c hair. And that thinking could be very problematic.
Because I think a lot of times people are subconsciously trying to match a specific curl pattern to a specific look of a black woman. For example, a lighter skinned woman with 3c hair. And a darker skinned woman with 4c hair. When that’s not always the case. Skin complexion doesn’t dictate hair texture.

I totally agree. In my opinion, black women embrace the gay/transgender community more often than any other race of women, which speaks to why most gay/transgender, men in particular, feel they have this kindred connection with black women. Black women are who most of their aesthetic and mannerisms come from. The problem with this is bc they are men, they have to create the softness of feminine features with the illusion of makeup. Lots of makeup. Some black women, mimic this look, which gives them the opposite appearance. It hardens their features. The middle ground for both parties is that gay/ transgender men appear more feminine and black women appear more masculine, hence they look alike. I would never want to resemble a man or manly in any way. We don’t need all of the illusions. A more natural beat is so much better, in my opinion of course.

I wear wigs because I like the colors and styles. I'm an Alt Blk girl and I like anime. I wear what I want. And what I buy fits my personality.
My hair will never look like a rainbow unicorn and I don't plan it to be. I have many different kinds of wigs including cotton candy pink 4c and a 4a unit. I will never add color to my hair nor use a straightener because that's not what it's meant to be. So I get a wig.
I do twist outs and jumbo braids (no hair added). My natural hair is arm pit length. My home girl who does my hair sometimes has asked me "how do u get ur edges so thick?". I told her I only get my hair professionally done once every two years. Otherwise I just twist it up and leave it alone.
Natural hair is not "hard to manage". You wash it. Apply blue magic or sulfur 8 on the scalp. Shea butter mixed with oils on the ends to protect them. The end 😂😂 People trying turn their hair 1B 4c hair into their wigs 1a 613 and then wonder why they don't have hair or claim natural hair so hard. It will never be a 613. It will never be 1a. Some wearing wigs do have self-esteem issues.
Issues that stem from constant Societal indoctrination to Hate 4c texture. Alter & or hide it to appease those in Systems of society who's decisions did & or can affect livelihoods.
However, on the other side are females who thoroughly love their hair and wear wigs because they like varying styles.

I don’t wear wigs but I do have a question. So just asking, what about the women who wear wigs that actually have long beautiful hair sometimes longer than the wig but they choose to wear wigs for hairstyles they can’t wear like a bob or they don’t want to put heat on their natural long hair. What about those women?

I don’t know if anyone is in the hair industry but I’ve been working in white salons most of my career and most of these women are wearing clips in and bleaching their hair to be blonde. Now they are even beginning to wear lace front wigs but of course no one is going to think that it’s fake because a lot of people subconsciously believe it’s theirs because they are white. And I know someone is going to say they are mimicking their hair texture so it’s different. Not necessarily because we have white women who come in with the most finest and thinnest hair and snap in clips in that are too thick for their texture.

Black woman can wear their hair and hair extensions and love them both!
Its easy for women to speak like that also when they don't have hair and scalp problems.
When other races of women are bleaching their hair, adding tape ins, micro rings and halo hair extensions, is anyone saying anything to them?
When I wore my short 4C hair for 5 years straight, did black people compliment or tear me down? Guess which one!

Clearly if you have health issues, no one is talking to you. However, wigs may be making your health issues worse but that's between you and your dermatologist.
Lastly, how do you know what other races of women are discussing when it comes to their hair? Other races of women aren't wearing a head full of hair that looks the opposite of their natural hair.
Other races of women don't brag about wearing human hair that was shaved off of a woman's head in Asia. There is something serious sick about that.

I also will say when it comes down to make-up and lashes it’s not about getting it done. It’s about how it’s done you can have a full face of makeup, and it looks soft in the same way that you could have a full face of makeup and it looks heavy. and the same sense that you could have very little makeup on and the make up application looks crazy. I think it’s not fair to biological women to constantly be compared and accused of trying to look like women who aren’t biologically women all in the name of arguing for women to not wear make up all the time.

A few months ago black women were mad at Kai cenat and druski because they accused a biological black woman of being a trans woman but if you go back and look at how that woman looked, she did look like a trans woman because she was so over done.

Wigs to me are more like eyelid tape than makeup. Some people consider eyelid tape makeup. This might be a cross cultural example so idk if you will get it (I live in East Asia) but basically this tape is used to change your eye shape + make your lids look double instead of getting surgery. Makeup in general isn't going to change a racial feature. Like unless you're doing white chicks make up with prosthetics and white foundation or something you're still gonna have your natural black features. However most wigs black women wear do not enhance their black features but change them. And yes, our hair is a phenotype. So no, I don't think it's the same as makeup.

Or do keratin or Japanese straightening to make their hair straight and more manageable. Who’s to say a weave or wig can’t mimic black women’s hair when a good blow out or silk press can resemble Indian remy? Also, contrary to what the woman in the second video said, there are black women who are born blonde, it may not be platinum but even most ww aren’t naturally platinum. It’s rare.
