So much better than what I was expecting! I love Carl Lewis. He uses every moment he can to teach a lesson.
I've coached for 21 years and Carl Lewis is TEACHER and a coach. All coaches are not teachers. Carl is going to tell you what to do, how to do it, and WHY. Allows the athlete to own it and comprehend the mechanics of running. Athletes can "self-correct" better that way.
@@gazzelle4 I'm new to the track world (3rd year coaching HS track and field/ cross country) and his words have worked wonders for me. He knows exactly how to get his point across and make his instructions matter.
@@iAmBryanX my experience is you either can run fast or you cannot. It's a thing you " inherit " from parents. Not much technique needed, coachwise, just fitness, power, etc.
Ash Sol you’re willfully ignorant and dangerous. Carl Lewis was told by his first coach he just wasn’t fast enough so he should concentrate on just jumping. In two seasons with good coaching Carl went from just a jumper to arguably the best sprinter of all time. An ignoramus like yourself would have dismissed him as not born with it. The fastest people are that way because they do the most things right when they train, eat, run/sprint and recover.
iAmBryan X he doesn't even know the difference between hip extensors and hip flexors.he needs to learn a bit of anatomy and biomechanics so he doesn't sound like an idiot.
Carl Lewis is a sprint/long jump legend 🥇
“ Carl put your feet down Lewis.”
I can't believe how lucky and blessed these guys are to be taught by Carl Lewis. Such a legend.
I agree, and people should stop hating on him
@@ABLQuality why are people hating?
@@timmy4312 because some people are massive fans of Ben Johnson who DOPED and beat Carl and they say that Lewis is just a saw loser because he "lost to Ben Johnson" and that according to them everyone dopes.
@@timmy4312 Go watch a video of the 1988 seuol 100m olympics so many people are hating on Carl
@@ABLQuality hmm, that's funny, if my source and memory is correct Lewis went undetected his whole career and then he got caught by some light drugs that would be legal today, Ben Johnson was a complete cheater. I can also imagine Mike Powell winning over him and setting the world record must have been hard on Lewis as Lewis had clear 8,95 potential. I think Lewis knew that he was one of greatest athletes to ever live but he never got the chance to fully display his immense strength.
How lucky are these guys?! I was blessed to have been one Coach Kyle Tellez’s very first students. After college his first gig was at Memorial Middle School. Being Coach T’s son must have been a ton of pressure. I’m proud of his success though! When we won the 4x400 relay we pulled ahead of everyone on points and won the meet. I remember him giving me a jumping high five and yelling,”YA’LL DID IT!! YOU WON THE WHOLE ENCHILADA!” What great times!!! I’m 42 now, 😂❗️But.. hey! I still got those fast twitch muscles!!! Vrooooom!
I wish I had a coach like dat... instead we get a half ass coach that's more focused on team bonding than actually making the team better🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
Joeson Savage that’s when you step in and lead your team. Begin with team stretching and warm up. Let everyone know how important this first step is. Then learn something new and useful and put it into practice yourself. This can be something like learning the most efficient way to blast out of the starting blocks. Tell everyone to peep your start at the next meet. Booom! Murc everyone off the line!! Others will see that you know what your talking about and will be asking you for pointers. Little things like this can make you a better athlete and leader. Or try engaging your coach and let him know your team wants to learn how what the best free weight techniques are to help your running. I wish you the best!!
@@christiansantos7164 Appreciate it... trying out for team captain nxt year🐐💯🐐💯
Joeson Savage we’re claiming THAT!!!!!
Classic coaching-also applies to distance running.
Carl, you the man! Just like all youngsters, not a one listening...
Very informative lesson, a lot of gems captured here 🏃🏾
He makes it sound so easy, and it is. But not at his level.
Man i wish i would have that kind of trainer man :)
Wow. I see what he's saying with stepping down
These episodes are best with Carl!!
Great man, great teacher. Those kids are lucky.
I love these videos 🤙🏿
Great teaching
0:45 PoPo around the corner 😵
Regardless of his past i think any young runner should be honored to have him as their mentor, he seems like a great teacher.
Regardless of his pass! Do you know his pass, do you know him personally, did you have any form of relationship with that young msn? God have mercy on uou.
Such an inspiration to many 😊
Legend of Legends!!
I remember racing Carl Lewis in the summer of 1988 at an all comers track meet at Santa Monica community college..I was 13 years old and no one wanted to step on the track to race him in the 200...well I did..he smoked me ..it was epic
My rules are when hiking in the wilderness where you may cross paths with a hungry Grizzly bear. “ always take someone you can out run”.
Lorrie miller, and if that person is so sht frightened, gets a adrenaline rush, and outruns you ?
😂😂 that’s fucked up
Funniest thing I have seen in God knows how long
That was great!
Sounds good,
although they are defo hip flexors he was referring to not extensors
Chris Hyland yup, he sounded like an idiot.
He is having logic 🤣🤣 incredible
God knows I've over thought sprinting toooo much for too long. That's why I'm not an Olympian. I think I got it now tho. 2021🤣🤣
How is your progress?
Hips high, head still, chin down and allow the limbs to move naturally. Minimise the tension in those limbs and let them flow forwards and backwards, not side-to-side. Action reaction, to go forward fast you push back hard !!
🐐Breaking down 🐐s
You! The guy was correct.
great tip for coaches
I miss track, Houston! I miss you guys.
Carl Lewis #Icon an American hero !! They said ones the black man couldn’t go for the long distance until my African came and took over
More houston content please
Carl Lewis is Dropping serious Knowledge
We need one when he coach the long jump
It’s a logical fallacy but it’s a good analogy, legend
I noticed how he was taller than the athletes and ended up searching his height. I had NO CLUE he was 6'2". I always thought he was short.
Ben Johnson showed this technique.
chobeeboy44 - Did he?
Vito Roma yes he did.. Charlie Francis was an advocate of stepping over and driving down
Ohhhh the clockbate
Imagine being able to suggest your coach was the best of all time in something and you wouldn’t be cappin
“ here comes the lion ….” Lol . King Carl the GOAT
Carl was a legend, but he failed multiple tests like many did.
Greatest character in track history! Funny guy!
Was anyone else just staring at their abs like wtf are they human
Aye, if you one of us a.k.a. the runners... YOU GON GET SOME ABS. Running does shit to you🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
oovoo javer yea pretty much all serious runners got abs
@@mysticalszn7787 damm straight son lol
@@KJF839 hehe yes it does
I got abs, but yeah abs are common to sprinters who are serious.
They need to shut up and listen to A icon like Lewis. They are so lucky to have him there. With that mindset they got they never get on his level.
Brilliant video, but a small nitpick: even Carl Lewis at full tilt in '84 isn't going to outsprint a lion :)
It wasn't about out running the prey, it was about out running your competition (just like a real race). The runner that was worst or left behind, would get slaughtered (lost), and the guy that got away, survived and had his genes passed down.
Shocked to pieces Carl didn't say,
1. Me
2. Me.
3. Me.
4. Me.
5. Me again... lol
this was good but not what the title suggested....
Cool
Dude, im taking notes and i know im never running again in my life
Put your feet down
I did not understand what he means by keep your foot on the ground, can anyone explain?
By keeping your foot on the ground beneath you no momentum is lost as apposed to putting your foot on the ground in front of you from overstriding. As your body moves forward and your foot stays, more power is generated from pushing off your toes. As he also lists, your hip flexor extends and will ultimately slingshot your foot back underneath you with less energy than you would pulling it forward early.
The feeling is as if you are scraping something off the bottom of your shoe as you are bringing your foot back and then as you are on your toes the foot will snap back up.
@@j.w.matney8390 Sir you are not supposed to be on your toes when sprinting
@@sprinterproductionshd3061 My mistake, I was thinking of distance running and pushing off the ball of the foot. I don't know why I wrote on your toes, ha ha. Thanks for pointing this out.
Wow.
It’s all about the cycle - Carl Lewis
I was taught to run like a cheetah. You are grabbing the ground in front of you like a cheetah with his claws.
Except cheetah's have four legs and they actually don't reach to pull, they reach for coverage.
They push with the hind legs, and the fore legs extend as much as they can then placed down.
Then the hind legs meet the fore legs and push again.
Infact, even tho you see the fore legs extend, it comes down right under them, in the same way Carl describes.
PUT YOU FEET DOWN
He is teaching to push, yet the Jamaicans are teaching to Pull.
I personally believe that pushing is done in the first 25-30 meters.
THEN ITS UPRIGHT PULLING AFTER THAT.
Trav Is everything I’ll definitely trust you over a 10 time OlympicGold medalist. You’re right.
@@westonlawrence3422 thanks for your confidence.
And he does say pull a few times.
Weston Lawrence You weren’t listening to him either even with his 10 Olympic Gold medals from 4 Olympiads.
Trav Is everything it is all pulling, the glutes do most if the work. he is just ignorant, can't tell the difference between hip extensors and flexors, or pushing and pulling. if you push, the force will propel you up instead of forward. pulling propels forward. you are right, physics is physics, being carl lewis doesn't change the laws of physics.
💫
"If you ran prissy you die"
If boy Hayes was around today Usain bolt wouldn't tie his shoe laces
👍💯💯
These are some of the luckiest athletes on the planet, having one of the greatest of all time talk with them and they look like they would rather be somewhere else. Spoilt.
Not that deep lmao, they obviously respect their coach they just having fun
Misleading thumbnail
Best click bait ever
I would have said Michael Johnson 🤷🏻♂️
So the point is to be scared for your life or running away from wild animals to get good sprinting form. Thanks carl! Im on my way to the nearest lion safari
Yes.
Carl should tell young guys how he ran at 12.5m/s.
No one ever hit 12.5m/s maybe tyson gay but it's controversial
The cake tho 🎂
Carl running from popo Lewis
So WR holders are cavemen
Carl feels right at home when bare chested males are there
I always thought Carl was on the "prissy" side lol
those kids could care less. They didnt listen to any of that cave man mumbo jumbo. come on man
Couple of fruity ones there as well lol
@Sheila Phillip shut up
Very misleading title! The comment about the "Po Po" was shallow, and you wonder where kids learn it. Carl...you need a reset with the current generation!
2:16 thats the kind of knowledge you learn at a clinic that costs 50$
Fake title
No it's not he said cavemen
I agree it's a lousy trick to get more views. Video was o.k. though, some good advice. Good to see Carl Lewis shares his knowledge about sprinting with young athletes.
your site is soooooo cringe as usual
Wow not one comment on Cavemans use of 'Roids? Yet
Ben Johnson
Spirit of Life & Truth
Funny
Them boys xtra thicc
There’s a massive difference in being caught with Cold suppressing ingredient substances, in the system,as was the case with Carl Lewis, than those caught with actual Steroids and Body enhancing drugs like Johnson was !!!
Usain bolt could never teach people how to sprint because he wouldn't be able to relate with them.
He might want to get into a different profession.
Rich83 why
Bullshit!
Too many people in the group... corona definitely spread
That was long before covid/19.
Smarty pants.
My god so much of this stuff is wrong or poorly explained
Fluro Flash explain it to me plz I don’t know what I’m doing
Possibly poorly explained if there wasn't already an understanding of sprinting technique.
Fluro flash, either you naturally can run fast or you cannot. It's as simple as that.
@@ashsol2657 Everyone of those guys can run fast or they wouldn't be there. The best of them will learn how to maximize their natural speed.
@@crisprjw3051 Ok this is my thoughts on it.
Starting with an opinion as a coach. Likening a track sprint to escaping a predator can lead to the athlete sitting in and tensing up through the run which is deterimental especially in the last 40 where you should be tall and relaxed (this is just my opinion)
As a physio with a biomech background
He points at the hip flexor muscles and calls them extensors
he seems to think that a big stretch of the hip flexors leads to a passive recoil of the muscle. At high speed, the muscle would be contracting to get into position. In order for this to happen you don't want to be to stretched out as Lewis says in the video. This compromises the length tension relationship of the muscle and reduces contractility
I was a bit confused with his reference to the Achilles. For a similar reason over stretching the tendon compromises the propulsive movement of the foot (plantar flexion or pointing your toes) so if it's too long you get less power
His explaination of foot placement is meh. It's right to say you want to contact beneath you. This gives you more downward force and, based on Newton's third law. The more force you put into the ground the more force the ground returns to you (called ground reaction force). The body then manipulates that force into forward momentum by natural shifting centre of mass. By contacting directly beneath you. Your weight gives more force. Contacting Infront is like a natural brake and also increases risk of shin splints and other stress injuries.
Back to coach brain. I would have emphasised the importance of fast contact time with high force through the ground. Again to prevent the athletes from "sitting in" and compromising there efficiency. The greatest runners in Olympic history are so great because they put more force into the ground and are on the ground for less time.
I know this is long and I don't mean to be rude to Mr Lewis he is a great champion (not so great a coach imo). Hope this helps your running A CRISPR Engineer. If you guys want more info definitely listen to Michael Johnson talk about sprints he knows his stuff and is a fantastic coach
