This was on HBO in 1984 and we watched it about 100 times. There were a dozen similar and hilarious skits, one with Joe playing the drums. He was really talented.
It was great. The Joe Piscopo Special. I was a kid and we owned it on VHS and watched it over and over again. All the skits were funny. I was so disappointed and confused by his second special, it was truly awful. He was on steroids and kept talking about his son and how much he loved him which is nice but not at all funny. But his first one is a classic.
This may be the most perfect comedy piece I've ever seen. I've watched it at least 100 times. I can't imagine any way that it might be improved upon. REALLY BRILLIANT ! I think it's right up there with "WHO'S ON FIRST?"
Hilarious stuff. I love that Eddie Murphy's impression of Carl Lewis was just him being Eddie Murphy but yelling "I'm Carl Lewis." In 1984, that was kind of the point. Eddie Murphy was a bigger star than any of the people in this sketch, including Carl Lewis. People didn't get it then, but they do now, and that's why we never see anything like this today.
Carl Lewis didn’t become the “fastest man in the world” until after the Seoul Olympics in 88 (and Lewis still technically came 2nd in the 100m) when Ben Johnson was banned for 4yrs for using steroids. I watched the race as a kid and Ben Johnson left Carl Lewis & Linford Christie for dead winning in the time of 9.79sec smashing the old world record (no wonder they drug tested him) and it wasn’t until Usain Bolt at the Beijing Olympics that, that time was equalled (the Bolt smashed that record again with a time which I can’t see being beat for decades maybe 100yrs)
@@JoeHynes284 yeah I remember Ben Johnson had shaved his head bald, had a gold chain around his neck, was wearing the red coloured shirt & shorts that represented Canada and he also looked like he had put on a lot of muscle mass since I last saw him (maybe he didn’t but compared to Carl Lewis & Linford Christie he was huge). I also remember the headline in the sports page of the newspaper my parents bought which said “Ben The Bullet” only to have his name dragged through the mud in the papers the following days as a drug cheat. It’s funny what things stick in your mind as a child as I was 6 at the time and 7 later on in the year and I remember that the race was on either 7am or 8am because of the time difference between Korea and England

I love that Eddie doesn't even try to actually imitate Carl Lewis...it's just so great!
That's what makes this sketch so funny to me.
I have a sense of humor.. so I get the comedy. You need to have a sense of humor.. or the skit will go right over your head.
Well its only really important to imitate a person when overall people know what rhe impression should be like.

That's fn perfect. That's exactly what Lewis did. He would refer to himself as Carl Lewis over, and over and over. He was the greatest.

'I'm Carl Lewis, I'm faster than God!' It feels like Eddie is improvising in this sketch! That's just how great he is, Eddie's so funny😂😂😂
Exactly, you can tell when he's that inspector in Beverly Hills Cop, or any other character. It's like he just fleshes out the small bits of comedy
Eddie was known to improvise sketches on SNL, so I wouldn't be shocked if he was doing it.
Eddie Murphy is hilarious. I can watch his movies thousand of times and laughing anytime hard...!

Why was Eddie Murphy running the clockwise around the track instead of the standard counter-clockwise?

why they running clockwise? was it in Great Britain?
That’s not Carl Lewis that’s Michael Johnson
He does look like him.
I love the breathing when Carl is coming around the corner in slow mo

Eddie was a phenom. He started on that show at 19.
