To check if a product is vegan you can also consider using Google lens to translate the ingredients ! Not always perfect as some ingredients will be left out due to Japanese labelling laws if they are present only in small quantities

Awesome video! Planning my own vegan trip and this was really helpful. Wish you gave a brief summary of eating vegan in Tokyo at the end though.

Just found your channel. I’m going to Japan in November, so buzzed to try all the places you’ve mentioned. I didn’t realise there were so many vegan places! 🫶🏻

Those initial noodles almost definitely were not vegan unfortunately. Even the various tofu "sticks" at 7-11 are all not vegan. They have egg or fish products of some sort. Sucks. To know what is in everything, using Google Lens is a must and a lifesaver!
The good news is numerous great vegan places in Tokyo now and even more places with vegan options.

1:22 it might say tomato chillie but the noodle itself is made of pork most times,
Dont eat any noodle if its not labelled as vegan openly

May I ask what point of the chili tomato noodle package looked vegan? I always wonder what point of Japanese food packages make vegan people buy non-veg food... I'm Japanese, and it doesn't look like vegan to me.. I am not accusing you for eating them. I just want to know why... Are Japanese food labeling and packagings are misleading?

How can we easily check if a product is vegan in japan? Im going there soon and It would help me out so much, also any tips about vegan food in restaurants?

    • @veganjapanese

Unfortunately, there's no easy way to tell if processed foods are vegan or not.
You have to check the ingredients.
I think this is the same in all countries, not just Japan.
Is there an easy way to find vegan processed foods in your country?
Currently, as far as I know, there are three types of vegan certification symbols, but it is rare to see them in stores.
Most plant foods are accidental and the only way to find them is by looking at the ingredients.
For shopping, vegan travelers can rely on the Google Translate camera.
You can't expect vegan options at a restaurant you stumble upon.
The chances of getting non-veg food veganized are also low.
We cannot expect non-veg cooks to understand our needs.
The easiest way to find vegan food is searching vegan restaurants and stores using the apps.
Will you be staying in Tokyo?
There are plenty of vegan restaurants in urban areas.
If you stay in the countryside, you have options at chain stores.
It might sound super difficult, but actually it's not, if you research in advance.
I recommend watching the video below to know the exterior of the cafes and food packaging.
      Hope you enjoy Japan!

@@theFishy_ By the way, does this package design look vegan to you?
I'm curious if this is the difference between Japanese and foreigners' interpretation of design.
If so, they may have to reconsider the design for clarity.
(I am not affiliated with Nissin)

@@veganjapanese in a way, it kinda does look vegan, since it says tomato and chili, theres no way to know unless you check the ingridients

    • @veganjapanese

I never thought that the name Chili Tomato Noodles could be interpreted as containing only chilli, tomato and noodles.
So, that means many people think that chili beans is just chili and beans, Onion soup is just onion water, and spaghetti carbonara is just spaghetti and charcoal. (This is not an attack, just an example)
I was always wondering why, now I know.
There's nothing wrong about Japanese package design.
Thank you. It's good to know.

    そのカップヌードルのチリトマト味は絶対ビーガンじゃ無い
    日本のスープは肉や魚で作っているので注意が必要
    ラーメンだけじゃなく、みそ汁、そばつゆもね。鰹節や煮干が入っているから
That chili tomato noodle is not vegan…
Japanese soups often contain meat or fish, so be careful.
Not only ramen, but also miso soup and soba soup. Because it contains dried bonito dried bonito or dried sardines.

@@emmarhodes-pery1249 Japanese convenience stores are notorious for putting meat in many products you wouldn’t expect - an ounce of research reveals this. This video should maybe be called something like “Trying to be vegan in Japan (but not doing a great job)”
