  • Hey comic fans! On Free Comic Book day I went to a giant comic book warehouse sale put on by Gary Dolgoff Comics, one of the biggest comic sellers in the country... and got an INCREDIBLE comic haul for an insanely low price! So then why was I AFRAID to make a youtube video about it? Watch the video to find out why, and to see the incredible comics that I brought home!

Seeing all the 90’s comics in bulk doesn’t surprise me at all! I really love your channel for your genuine love and passion for the hobby. I have collected off and on for several years. One of the reasons I quit collecting for almost a decade was because every book during the 90’s was expected to have tremendous value in the long run. Then the speculator market crashed. The potential value of the books I bought were my motivation then and I lost interest in the hobby. I sold most of my collection and kept only 8 books that I loved. Then the Daredevil movie came out and reignited my passion for collecting again. I’ve been a consistent collector since 2003 and have no plans of stopping. Several UA-cam channels were really helpful to learn how the hobby had changed, your channel has always been fun to watch. I’ve gotten tired of the speculation on movies and TV and collectors focus only on key issues at a 9.8. That was never the focus of my collecting, I actually reading the stories and following the journey of the characters as different creative groups attempted to put their twist on a classic character. Books that I collected more than a couple of decades ago are now the hot books that collectors are dying together their hands on. I guess to some clearly I’m naive by actually buying books that I love. I love the characters and that’s what keeps people collecting and reading. I’ve also had a lot of fun collecting facsimiles of books that I could never afford, I don’t mind being in the minority of collectors. When you drop $75-$100 every 2 weeks on books you give more thought to how you spend your money. At 50 years old, I think I’m a bigger geek for comics than when I was younger. 😂😂 Never quit being a positive person about your passion for collecting comics. If I lived where you lived I would have gone into debt buying what books I could myself. 😂😂😂

Stop beating yourself up Mike. I think you showed remarkable restraint.
I remember as a kid seeing Gary Dolgoff's ads in Both Marvel and DC comics. Thinking how amazing it would be
to order comics in the post! I lived in the uk so it was not an option.
No hyperbole, those prices were stunning, a little above cover price!
Great to see father and son sharing a love of the same hobby.
Keep the vids coming mate, in these dark times they are the highlight of my week.
Hope you and your family keep well.
    Best wishes from the UK.

i appreciate your outlook on the community, cause i have experienced the bad side of comic collecting/scalping! i unfortunately dont have alot of money to pay up for good books, so i hate it when i see people buying them, and then reselling for way over what the book is worth! i collect for me, not to resell, and some resellers ruin the hobby!

I understand it’s a taboo subject for many people but this is how we can afford some comics we normally couldn’t: Get a good deal on a comic and trade/sell it for closer to retail (at a profit) to work toward owning bigger books. Most of us do it to improve our collections. We all do this to some extent. Some people lie, deceive, or take advantage of others to get ahead. Others grind to find great deals to pass along to someone else who is happy to pay a little more than we did. I’ve been on all sides, bought and sold at a loss and profit. Some of us have the means to pay for comics and never sell while some of us have to buy and sell to stretch our money to afford the keys we otherwise couldn’t. Love it or hate it, that’s the way the hobby is evolving.

    • @upnorthcomics
      @upnorthcomics 4 місяці тому +5

Funding the hobby to fund the hobby. We all do it. What would be the point of selling at a loss all the time? If you’re going to sit there and legitimately think you would pass on any of these books, you’re lying through your phone screen.

@@dansxmencomicsNAILED it. I grew up in Baltimore, got my books at GEPPIS COMIC WORLD when Steve still ran the shop in Harborplace. Got to know him pretty well over the years. While I was afforded the occasional hint of what's to come or saw things before some folks,no real advantage till later in life. Been to Atlanta to the Diamond spring cleaning a cpl times... .25¢ a comic. Every. Comic. I was getting signed INFINITY GAUNTLET #1s for a quarter. Gaiman was there signing my .25¢ SANDMAN books we were given Platinum MILESTONE #1s.
I could have made a KILLING!!!
But sold 2 I.G. with the gold Perez sigs...for 12 bucks each. The rest were given away.
      Same with Sandman issues.
Had free drawings for all ..ALL .the platinum Milestone books.
I got to keep my copies.
The 48 total dollars bought bags and boards.
Felt greasy to try to bilk the people,my FRIENDS, that I traded and bought with out of next weeks comic money.
Integrity in the hobby must be maintained!!!!

This is a great video to show people these types of sales do happen and the hunt is what makes this hobby fun, at least for me. With that said, a sale like this can also hurt the hobby because it will flood the market with keys. Kind of a double edged sword.

Even if folks show up with hand carts to ravage the boxes next time, you still can only look through one box at a time. There is plenty for everyone. Fun thing with sales like this is its impossible for one person to get it all even if they tried. And its good for Gary Dolgoff, they more he sold the more he will bring out next time etc.

It looked like an incredible time. The thrill of the hunt is the best. This event gets more copies out in the market, probably slightly lowering prices in general. If you did sell or trade your extra issues it is very likely that the cost is not the maximum set by some dealers allowing those that want those books the opportunity to buy for cheaper. Also, a lot of the time your LCS won't have a copy because it is a "key" comic. Anyway, ignore those that are grumbling as you invested your money and time to get your cool haul. Congrats.

As an old comic guy I believe I remember Gary Dolgoff having a comics warehouse in New York in 1970s...he was selling in bulk back then finding publisher warehouses of mint early Marvels from mid 1960s...probably for $3-5 @ back then. Now it is probably coming from comic shops going out of business and distributor left over copies. So this is not something new...its selling of excess stock and fortunately you are in an area where comics are more available. A lot of collectors used to buy up 40+ years ago...I know I bought extra copies of some books...X factor 1-10 were on my list ...:-)

Gosh! It’s clear this dealer isn’t the only one with this huge inventory of 90s comics. These Marvel and DC comics are virtually all worthless just like those 90s Image comics. Many of those books have been featured on Tom 101 as hot speculation books. I suggest buy the books you truly like but don’t pay over two to three dollars for them because there’s no future investment in them. It’s scary to think collectors are wasting their money to have these books graded and slabbed. Collect comics for love only.

Its always upset me to see them grab everything they see for reselling purposes. People like those guys ruined the hobby and the thrill of the hunt for me. Its good to see that you grab your share and left some for others to find. keep up the good work!

That looked like a great show, Mike! I can only imagine the ooh's and aah's emanating from the show floor every time a key was pulled out. I understand your concern, but you did the right thing in posting it. After all, this is about the love of the hobby. We can't control what others do, so there's no point in worrying about it. Enjoy the hobby and the connections made. Thanks for sharing!

Congrats on the Larfleeze book! I know you’ve been looking for that one for a while based on a video from a while back.
A few months ago I went to a 50% $1 and 25 cent bin sale and it was the same way. People would tell the people at the boxes beside them what they were looking for and we’d point out when we found them - AND if someone beside you noticed a good book in the box you were going through they would point it out so you wouldn’t miss it. So I think more times than not in this hobby people will help each other and make sure everyone wins. Cheers!

The last time I went to a show like that was probably about 8 years ago. Books were not $3 each. It was more like fill a short box for $30, long box for $50. The market for comics these days is kind of crazy... can't wait for things to crash back down a bit. Million print run comics are way too expensive and people find 'keys' in every little moment. Kind of out of control. Cool video though! Digging through boxes will always be fun.

Gary Dolgoff comics is a terrific company and I have enjoyed buying many many books from them over the years. Cheers and keep listening to your angel!😇

Hey Mike, thanks for the video. My favorite part was seeing you build happy memories with your son. Regarding the other bits, you and I can’t control how Mr. Dolgoff wants to sell his comics (i.e., put on a fabulous warehouse sale) or how buyers (resellers or not) are going to respond. Honestly, if selling comics were my way of feeding my family and that kind of opportunity came along, I would max out my purchase power as well. It’s really up to Mr. Dolgoff. He could easily limit purchases to maintain a certain flavor to his events. Thanks for sharing the content!

Thank you for being honest that’s why I loved your show. I would be happy just with one of each. Specially X-Men four and five. I enjoy my collections not trying to make money. The only time that I sell is to send books to CGC for me. Muchas Gracias.
