An emergency is no time to be searching for an adapter for your handheld radio. The PJ2 is the only handheld aviation radio that can be connected to standard aviation headset plugs (twin PJ plugs) without using a special adapter. The simplicity of this radio makes it a pilot favorite: just turn it on, type in a frequency, and plug in your headset. No menus, no wires, and no adapters. Dedicated volume and squelch knobs are easy to adjust, even in turbulence, and the extra-large screen and keypad make a big difference during an emergency.
The award-winning SP-400 is simply the most powerful portable radio you can buy-like having a complete standby radio stack in your flight bag. The all-in-one radio makes a reliable backup for emergency use, but it’s also perfect for listening to ATIS, getting clearances before engine start or just monitoring local traffic. But a great radio is worthless if it’s hard to use. That’s why our staff of pilots, flight instructors and aircraft owners spent so much time making the SP-400 intuitive and easy to use. It has all the features you need, but none that you don’t. There are no confusing menus, no memory bands and no complicated squelch buttons-just turn it on and type in a frequency.

I can't find the transmitting power wattage for these radios anywhere online at all!

6 for ICOM but Sportys seems to think their ranges are all the same.... 6-25 miles depending on conditions.

I've been a ham radio operator for several decades as well as pilot. I have a lot of familiarity with Yaesu. The yaesu fta-750l seemed like a perfect fit for me. I own both yaesu fta-750l and PJ2.
I actually thought the Sporty's folks were biased and full it pushing their brand. I can honestly say the cheaper PJ2 has better audio clarity and range on both Tx/Rx.
I've been using the PJ2 as a primary in the pattern until I get my aged and broken stack upgraded. The last recall function saves time when transitioning between grd/twr.
PJ2 is an excellent functioning no frills backup imo.

Just before reading your comment, I began thinking how could I not get a PJ2? This would seem to clinch the deal for me. I too am a ham, KI4FWB. Thanks for commenting.

Just bought the sp400 and trying to test it out I can't even hear the atis or tower from my local airport maybe 5 or 6 miles in direct line from my home. Maybe that's just because I'm on the ground but I am thinking that's pretty pathetic range wise. I live about 6 miles directly from MCO and can barely hear anything either. Just saying.....I thought they would be much stronger.

It's probably because you're on the ground using a portable radio/antenna. My mobile Ham Radio in my car, with a 30 inch mag mount whip antenna (much better antenna than your portable rubber-duck walkie-talkie antenna) doesn't pick up the AWOS until I'm about 5 or 6 miles out. Remember, those AWOS/ATIS are low power stations since most aircraft tuned to them are at the airport or high in the air.
