An emergency is no time to be searching for an adapter for your handheld radio. The simplicity of the PJ2 makes it a pilot favorite: just turn it on, type in a frequency, and plug in your headset. No menus, no wires, and no adapters. Dedicated volume and squelch knobs are easy to adjust, even in turbulence, and the extra-large screen and keypad make a big difference during an emergency.
    Features:

    - Large keypad
    - Last frequency button
    - 20 scannable memory channels
    - USB type-C plug for backup power

My friend has a full restored, late 30's built, J--Cub. There is NO electrical system. So he has been using a battery powered Handheld, connected to an airframe mounted antenna for years! Works just fine, even for VOR navigation.
Most pilots I know, keep a fully charged handheld aboard at all times. And thousands of "Owners" have the airframe mounted antenna with the lead line coming right out of the panel.
No doubt about it, these are just great tools to have around!

This radio should sell a ton. I have an idea for the $299 model if you guys decide to make this popular radio an advanced version for us nerds. You can easily add an internal GPS antenna, have the LCD show latitude and longitude for search/rescue. Maybe even include a simple airport database where you can punch in an ICAO and get results such as 10mi SW. I think fun features easy to use will sell.

I have a major comm problem in my plane so I've decided to just upgrade while I'm at it. Problem is my choices are pricey and going to take a minute to get the funds.
Decided to give this radio a try. I have a yaesu fta-750l but haven't been happy with the clarity. Being a ham radio operator I own yaesu equipment so I figured why not. Anyway I purchased the PJ2 and used it for the 1st time today in the pattern. The clarity was excellent and surprisingly was better than my yaesu. I need to fly my plane to keep the oil circulating so staying in pattern doing touch & go's are ok for now. When I get my comm issue situated I'll do a range test on portables. So far good. Btw I remoted antenna to window and used a telex ptt. With antenna on radio I was getting squeal and controllers notified me of squeal in transmission. I had to use ferrite core to stop squeal. So remoting antenna to window away from jacks solved that problem. Yes I did all that troubleshooting and moving stuff around in pattern...lol...I anticipated problems so prepared ahead of time. When I get a mount for portable radio I'll leave antenna on radio to minimize any coaxial transmission loss and leave ferrite core on headset.
Headset is 35+ yrs old so that very well could be adding to squealing issue.

I have one of these and really like the way it is designed for easy use. I don't want another device to have to figure out. Only issue is it won't turn on now but it does turn on with USB power. I'm assuming it is a bad battery pack so I am sending it in to Sporty's for a fix. Thanks for the video.

Was an external antenna used when range test was done? 15miles with the antenna inside cockpit seems questionable.

No external antenna and no tricks. The only advantage we had was altitude. 3500 feet is a lot better than 500.

Im a student pilot and will initially be using it to listen to improve my com skills. So ill be using it a lot. Would it be good for that? Will;l there ever be a option for a standard battery pack you can drop in a charger? Thank you...

This would work well for that use - it's easy to use and gets good reception. We are working on a rechargeable battery pack.

Just be cautious with a rechargeable batter pack. They lose charge over time so if you keep it as a backup it might be dead when you most need it.
