Because he (we) is clueless in the world of radio communications… upon excitingly opening his gift on Christmas morning , a look of utter bewilderment was frozen on his face . I however,(armed with the information of binge watching your videos)was practically bouncing in my seating with excitement! Unfortunately the enthusiasm wasn’t mutual and am returning it. BUT I was thinking of getting a couple of boafwang thingy radios and the there book by the guy who’s name isn’t his name you talked about on a few vids back . I was thinking that would be a better way to ease into a shtf community. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

I have a SDS200 and have been enjoying it for the past 2 years. It has provided me with a lot of enjoyment while providing me with a great amount of local information. I have added the optional DMR software feature as a lot of the local agencies utilize this mode. Great video.

I had this scanner for a few years and I have enjoyed listening to it, the main thing about this scanner is just learn the software, and you will see how much fun this scanner is. I also own the SDS100 portable too. best part of starting this scanner is just plug your zip code in and your all set to go. Enjoy the videos keep them comming.
I bought the 100(upgraded antenna to a Remtronix)a few years back and loved it so much I go the 200 for the house. It handles trunked systems amazingly. I highly reccomend both of them!
Thanks Randy, great vid as always. I have two of these, one for the overlander and the other for home with a disc-cone antenna 40 some feet up. One of the great features of this radio is that it shows you the CTCSS and DCS tones when receiving. If you scan the GMRS bands it will show you what tones are used be it repeater or simplex. I use this with the ProScan PC software and just let it run for a day or two and I have a clear list of all the GMRS traffic and the codes being used on each channel.
I just bought the SDS200 and I’m very excited to listen and mess with it.
Now I want one as well :) I left an excellent review, I still have my old scanner from Radio Shack 20 years old, Pro-97 1000 Ch Tripple Trunking, I works great still, but never works with batteries anymore, or even the rechargeable batteries. Great as long as it's plugged In, battery compartment is clean, no erosion, I should have someone fix it. I miss Radio Shack & Circuit City, those places were the best to get anything, but of course out of business long long ago. It sucks ordering stuff on Amazon, online, ext cause you have to deal with customer crappy service, sending stuff back, as in the days of Radio Shack & Circuit City was simple to just to take something back with the receipt of purchase. I'm drooling all over this new scanner myself. Lol Have a nice day
Another great video! I am a self admitted scanner dork and I enjoyed this video and completely agree its a great scanner. I have the handheld version the SDS100 and it works just like it should. As for the price, you really get what you pay for. There are less expensive models out there but the SDS series from Uniden work best on simulcast systems which you find in a majority of the trunked radio systems. Thanks for the good laughs!
"seems' to work does not mean it works good on simulcast systems. It seems that to listen to simulcast systems one needs a Harris. That and encryption is what has ruined scanning for many
The police in my area really don't broadcast anything of importance over the air. They use cell phones to talk about what they don't want you knowing.
My local police department used to have a scrambler. They used it for the important things like "how do you want your hamburger done?" and "the mayor is at the mall. His car was stolen."
I have the SDS200E EU version. Here the police have been encrypted since 2000/01 they use TETRA airwave, basically a semi phone system. Now they are moving to a new actually phone system (as are the ambulance and fire service) called ESN or the Emergency Services Network here in Scotland UK.

Have had my SDS200 for 3 years now, can here everything around DC area no problem at all with the exception of a few stuff that is encrypted
I have this scanner and it is amazing. I've only owned a few scanners but I've been using them since the early 80s. This one does an amazing job on digital trunked systems. The screen is very good and the Sentinel PC software works well however imperfect it may be. I'm going to give Proscan a try when I get a chance. I would like to be able to private stream.

So now I have one of these to go along with my SDS100 portable. They are even better than I could have imagined. The only negatives for me are this. The LAN port needs to be on the back, not the front, and the fact it has a downward-firing speaker. Software wise, Uniden's native Sentinel software is atrocious. Proscan is an order of magnitude better, but there are many things that can only be done with Sentinel. Understanding the way the memory system works is incredibly unintuitive; it took me weeks to get everything exactly as I wanted, and it's still not perfect. But once it's programmed it's a dream to use. A sensitive receiver, great LSM reception for P25 trunking, a gorgeous bright full colour display, and I could go on. This one's a keeper!
Thanks for the well-thought out, concise, informative, in depth, on point, no ifs-ands-or-buts review! I bought a scanner a few years ago, although analog, it quickly went into disuse because the local police went digital a few months after I purchased it. I've been looking for a top quality scanner that does digital and trunking as good as this scanner does. I'm just a normal guy like you, not one of those scanner dorks you talked about in this review.
At this price range the Midland MXPW500 ammo can base station is looking great. Your listing of scanner stations is just solid.

I've got an SDS100 portable scanner that I use at home and when traveling. While driving I have the 1-cable GPS unit hooked up to it so it runs off vehicle power as well as auto-updates itself to only scan the freqs in use in the area I'm driving through at the time.
It also scans GMRS freqs all the time so I can hear what folks are saying on the road and on GMRS repeaters in the area.

I love this scanner. I picked up the ProScan software as well so I can stream the audio to my desktop as well as setup a web server to stream it remotely (like to me phone)

Hi Randy.....John here.....I was looking for video's on this scanner, which I own, and lo & behold...there you are.....I am really enjoying your videos. I also have the SDS-100 handheld and the BCD436 & 536 scanners. I did not know you can run Sentinel on a Mac. I will have to look into that, since I prefer Macs now over a common windows PC. At work today, Sunday 4-30-23. Gotta go because break is over. Hopefully we can catch up later....Great to see you again Mr. Randy.....

I have the Home Patrol 2…No complaints and worth every cent. Weather and also the Trunked EMS and Police/Sheriffs. Well worth buying it not getting the larger version.

I have both of these Units!!! It's good to be in the Loop, If you Can be in it!!! I know there are many areas in the country, Where it's only private party Chat for security Reasons !!! I'm very fortunate to live in a area of the country, Where you still can hear a nice level of broadcasting!!!

The best feature of the SDS 200 and portable SDS 100 is how well they handle what' called LSM (Linear Simulcast Modulation) on P25 trunked systems. If there are multiple sites transmitting on the same frequency the SDS 100/200 will receive them perfectly while the older P25 Phase-II scanners will have some trouble with dropouts. I would also strong recommend using ProScan rather than Uniden's Sentinel software for programming. Sentinel is a pain in the bitch to use, but necessary for firmware and database upgrades.
yep, my older Whistler Easy Scan has trouble with simulcast signals. Like they try to cancel each other out and you get a Hodge podge of stacked out-of-sync signals. I ordered the SDS 100 of this series of scanners from ZipScanners this week. The tracking number shows it made it from MI to my hometown in LA to be delivered tomorrow. I can't wait to get my hands on it.
Now, I'm off to research how to talk with my hands.

Thanks for a simple start video on this scanner. The price doesn't bother me much since I can't afford any of the scanners so a price for such a nice looking scanner doesn't faze my dreaming of getting it. Would love to get one though. It's on my Amazon wish list.

yeah! Uniden is the best no ham radio I know of can bet them on scanning speed and the p25 decoder is a must have

Envy. I bought the BCD325p2 a couple years ago and have spent dozens of hours manually programming it as there’s no software available. I did the DMR, NXDN unlocks, well worth it IMO.
@Rusty Riley you can use FreeScan with the 325p2 and 996p2 easily. It's obsolete now and won't work on the SDS or 436/536 scanners, however it will work beautifully with the 325. And it's free. For *better* software, the 325p2 will work with ProScan, but that's paid software, not free.

I bought an SDR basically to listen to the whole spectrum. This SDS200 seems like a simpler way of doing the same thing. My SDR has a waterfall display, but the SDS200 has so many cool features. I like that the SDS200 can replay something if you just didn't catch it. and also the feature that will find new freq. while I sleep sounds nifty. And that it comes pre loaded with so many local freq. Really like the controlling it with the computer part. Thanks brother.
I'm pretty sure I've seen your hands in magazine adds...you must moisturize. I've had scanners growing up and always had one in my cruiser years ago, my how things have changed...big dollar item! Another great video!

I have been into scanners a long time. Over the years I have had a few scanners that were phenomenal. But never have had a scanner that picks up Police, fire, and other public services as good as the SDS200. Signals come in crystal clear, and most of time it will say on the screen which outfit is transmitting. There has NEVER been a base scanner as good as the sds200 for public service. Great review
