  • Cabinets are different from furniture. And different paints have different strengths. If you're thinking about painting your own cabinets, here are a few things to consider before tackling your project.

Hi, Melanie. This is a nice comparison. Thank you! I finished painting my first two-door vanity this weekend using Advantage. I spent a lot of time watching the Benjamin Moore How To's, and glad I did. Their advice was very much like yours, with the exception of dry time. They recommended 24 hours between coats, and I'm glad I did. It extended the duration of the project, but the outcome was really nice. I would also recommend to your viewers to remember to get tinted primer if using a darker paint.

Dollar store sells a product called LA Awesome cleaner..yeah stupid name but works really to clean and remove grease etc. Don't use Kilz use Benjamin Moore advance primer as it is a high build primer so when you sand it it gives you a nice smooth under surface. Use 220 grit for primer sanding. Use either a smooth nap or microfiber smooth roller and a smooth surface poly blend brush, these will let them level out better. Also, for smoothest results you need to sand in between each coat of advance paint and once again use 220grot for this.

Love your kitchen....I will look up your blog too! Interested in re-doing my cabinets that I did about 6 years ago with Annie Sloan chalk paint. Its time for a new look.

Did you wax them? Just be sure to use mineral spirits to remove your wax! Good luck with your project!

Hey Melanie! I found ya. I’ve used the BM Advance paint on cabinets and it worked out well. Looking forward to visiting your cute store again soon. 😁

There is a non toxic TSP cleaner on the market that works well.

Hi Melanie, great comparison and good information. How do you feel about Behr paint over BM Advance, for painting my kitchen cabinets white? I’m a simple DIY-er with zero skill in painting. I have only painted walls in our home, when we moved in. And it’s been years since I have touched any other type of paint.

Hi! General Behr paint is a regular latex, and I'm not a huge fan of latex on cabinets. I like the BM Advance because it is formulated a bit differently, has a bit higher durability and lays down smoother. But if regular Behr is what you are comfortable with, it could work. Prep very well and use a good primer :)

@@LostFoundDecor Thank you for the reply! I didn't realize Behr was latex paint. I got some researching to do, I guess, before making a choice. :)

My kitchen has a roll up "garage door" cubby in the corner. Any tips/thoughts on painting that with fusion?

Ugh, I know exactly what you’re talking about! I painted a door like that on an old Hoosier cabinet and it was a pain. The issue is you have to let the paint dry well before you start rolling it back and forth, and also dry in between the rollers so it won’t stick together. My best advise is to find a way to remove it and drape it so every surface is exposed (including in between the louvers), then paint and allow to dry for a week before you put it back in.

Did you use oil based kilz? Only oil based primer doesn't yellow or bleed. Have you have issues with that? Spray or brush? Brush strokes?
