    Drag your anchor for a hundred miles, turning off your gps when you approach a cable? Seize the ship and arrest the crew. Sell the ship for the repair costs.

    i used to work in a NOC and had international clients. dealing with underwater sea cable repair was the MESSIEST of issues. it literally leaves connections to countries down. then you have to typically depend on another country's abilities to do the repairs. the amount of times i had to deal with japanese repair ships to get Ireland back online would blow your mind.

    Cutting cables of potential opponents in time of peace gives one valuable insights in how the opponents are going to remediate in time of war, like how they reroute traffic, how long does it take for them to repair the cables. It forces the opponents to show their contingency plan. In addition observing how they repair and harden the cables tells one what it will take to severe these cables again in time of conflict. quote: "Yes. In 2022 in Tonga, for example, there was a volcanic eruption that severed the only subsea cable and cut off the country from communication. The plume also prohibited satellite communications. The country went dark. That was a huge issue because they were experiencing a crisis, a catastrophe. People needed help, and there was no communication network. That’s an extreme example. It doesn’t happen every day. But there are other examples where internet outages have been produced by cable cuts or faults. Luckily, volcanic eruptions are rare."

    • @abrakkehakka1357
      @abrakkehakka1357 2 дні тому

      The old copper communication cables were massive. But in theory you could transfer all the data you would want in a glass tube as skinny as a strand of hair. It’s the limitations of the transmitting and receiving equipment that makes it necessary to have several parallel strands of fibers. And the risk that some would falter. And then at least some protection from the elements.
      At least in the relatively small Baltic sea, I suppose ships who moves towards this kind of infrastructure could be hailed and informed about measures to be taken. Then at least they can’t say “oh… we forgot the anchor”.
