If you're not familiar, this song was recorded through a synthesizer, in its original rendition, which makes it very difficult to sing live (independent from its general technical difficulty). Its original meaning is about the separation of a family, someone leaving their home and the aftermath ("oily marks appear on walls/where pleasure moments hung before" - the replacement of framed, captured moments of happiness [pictures] replaced by generic paintings; "the dust has only just begun to form/crop circles in the carpet" - the patterned appearance carpet takes after furniture is removed; "when busy streets/a mess with people, would stop to hold/their heads, heavy" - people see someone moving out, and take a moment to gaze, showing sympathy with understanding of the situation) Now apply that original meaning to the context of recent events. The re-purposing of the song is seamless, and she now re-interprets it to the victim's family and friends dealing with the aftermath of the tragic loss of their loved ones. It's incredibly raw and emotional, and that's undoubtedly the largest contributor to the erring in her tone. It moves from a song about loss from divorce, to loss from death, and the emotional threshold escalates accordingly. I wouldn't have been able to give that performance without sobbing like a baby halfway through. I'm surprised by the negative comments because when I watched the whole concert live on tv this performance stood out to me. I made a mental note that I would look up this woman's songs because I've never heard of her before. I thought this song was beautiful ❤
Hide and Seek is probably one of her more challenging and raw songs, you'll love everything else by her if you can understand this one song. She's one of a kind. :)
I'm high key offended by some negative comments about her performance. I didn't know her before and I just cried watching her live cause this was so fucking beautiful, the lyrics, her voice, everything. For Gods sake why can't people just show some respect to each other, specially after the Manchester tragedy? OMG. :(
Sara right? It's really hard to sing live, especially a song whose recording is heavily produced. Besides, this event is supposed to promote love. People should appreciate the beauty in flaws as well. Just my opinion :)
I love her but she's always had this weird tone that makes it sound like she's out of tune when she isn't, I don't think most people who haven't listened to her a lot before could really appreciate this. She has poor control in some parts but nailed the important parts. Not everyone can be Miley, with perfect live vocals 😉
No idea why people think her voice was off key..this was the best vocal performance of the night and without a doubt the most emotional. I'd never heard of Imogen before this...

Show some respect for an artist that may not fit your definition of good music who's contributed to something beautiful. I was watching this on the tv that day and sorry to say had no clue who she was. Then I was like wtf is this incredible song. Its doesn't even matter the singing the lyrics were incredible on the day live.

@@tristanwright9733 Apart from the fact that she didn't miss just the high notes but really most of the notes, but what you said is contradictory. Either "she killed it" or she missed the high notes because it's hard.
@@bacicinvatteneaca She didn't really miss the high notes. She doesn't miss much at all other than the beginning when her voice is shaky. I posted that statement 30 seconds into the video. She kills it.
The start was definitely shaky, but what a powerful rendition of this song this was. It's so powerful and emotional. Yeah there may have been a few missed notes here and there, but you try singing that song's melody how it was originally done. She was powerful
Exactly my thoughts. As some others I also noticed she was a bit off in the very beginning but I took it as emotion more than anything and not only was she fine later on technically she was also amazing emotionally.
The song usually unfolds its full quality in polyphony and is not really intended to be sung in solo. But in this case the kind of solitude her voice represents here fits this sad event in a symbolic way. The song is almost experimental even in it's original version. It's just the type of artist Imogen Heap tends to be. And this freedom of art I think is what you shouldn't complain about.
So was so under appreciated. I watched her live at this concent and loads didn't know her...the minute she started, silence(then the bit what Jason derulo used came on and people didnt get it was her song he used) She's a brilliant song writer and singer(not usually into this music but appreciate real artist no matter what genre) Very underrated.
The people who think this is awful are clearly too young to have had this song impact their life in one way or another... this song is absolutely legendary. You should also know that the original is edited to sound very synthesized and layered. One can't recreate that with their voice. She did absolutely amazing. Definitely one of the best performances of the entire concert if not THE best. Much love to Imogen Heap 💙
You have to remember that this song was brought out with her voice symphersized, (sure I've not spelt that right) which makes it a very hard song to sing live, so how about stop judging her performance.
straittalkn This song was designed with the Vocoder effect in mind (multiple synthesized voices). So when she first originally recorded this song, she sang it with no bpm/tempo and just sang it straight into a microphone so she could then later add the Vocoder effect to her raw vocals. Because this songs intention was to have the vocoder effect, it didn't matter how hard the song was to sing raw because vocoder would essentially change the way her raw vocals sound anyway. Imogen Heap has, in my opinion, one of the best voices in modern music and if you listened to her other songs & live performances you would know this and probably agree.
the fact is that Imogen is a composer (an excellent one, I'd say) and as a singer she doesn'tuse autotune, unlike certain colleagues of hers. Nevertheless, I find her performance very good in terms of quality, she got better and better as she kept singing. and a very touching moment also. She remains one of the most underrated artists of our time, but also one of the most talented and creative
Yes! Composition and creativity is where she shines imo Maybe not the most consistent vocalist but such a trailblaizer and legenadary in her own right nonetheless.
Critisicing autotune in a video of Imogen is basically not understanding her music, she LOVES autotune, and all the technology that can help us make music in different ways. Learn what autotune is, produce music yourself, don't talk shit about a vst plugin that you don't even know If you want to talk good stuff about Imogen you don't need to trash other people either.
Saying that she doesn’t use auto tune is just kind of wrong because she does use vocoder here and there but it doesn’t take away the fact that she’s a genius and has been contributing most of her talents to please our soul and ears for a decade.
@@AtanoKSi for some reason, people who have zero knowledge of music assume that any singer who uses auto tune sucks at singing. And I get it, I get why that would be their conclusion. It makes sense on paper. But it's a style, a modern style, and while I DO believe some singers use it because they have a not so good voice, most are using it for the sound quality and the style to fit certain songs. You can actually usually tell that someone still has an amazing voice while they use auto tune. And also these people don't realize that nearly every single singer out there uses pitch correction which is just a light version of auto tune anyway lol it doesn't make them bad at singing, it makes them smart lol so that every note they hit is fine tuned
This is the most beautiful thing I've ever come across. This performance gives so much more than I've bargained for. I felt an immense amount of pressure to have to be perfect and always be the best. But hearing this and breaking down that wall and letting myself cry for a minute has given me part of my life back. This makes me relive the hardest parts of life and then makes me realize that I got past all of them. I've never had something give me such a heavenly feeling. As an atheist who feels lost half the time, this is a work of the gods telling me that I'm here and I'm not allowed to be forgotten. This is what I've need for all of this time. The singing was not perfect, but damn boy, it went through my soul. Singing isn't about hitting the right notes. It is about captivating your soul. Wonderful.
I am a member of a choir and I can assure you you won't captivate anyone's soul if you continually sing the wrong notes! Imogen hit most of the right notes which was enough to captivate the audience due to the frailty and innocent quality of her voice.;

My God.. the courage it takes to come out and play such a stripped-bare version of an already stripped-bare song. And to do so in such an extremely emotional event as this! I think this may actually be my favorite version of this song now.

True, it was a bit shaky at the beginning, but OMG did she totally turn it around and make up for it in the rest of it. In the second chorus, the original song has the vocoder effect to reach such a high note, and here she does it LIVE and all by herself, don't know anyone who can actually go so low and so high on her notes. I seriously can't believe how emotional and heart-touching the end of the performance was, it gave me goose bumps! This performance was raw and very angelic. It was a little out of tune in just a few parts but most of it was quite together. Those that are saying it's all out of tune have clearly never heard the original to compare this version to.
As much as I love the usual synthesizer-assisted version...hearing just her voice and the piano pouring this one out is...wow. Just...amazing. Amazing.

Marc Shaftenberg Lol totally not, I'm not sure about the name but this is a totally different technique. Actually this is a line lot of records of her voice used at the same time.
neither imogen nor daft punk use vocoders. hide and seek used a harmonizer, and daft punk usually use a talkbox
I'm surprised by the negative comments because when I watched the whole concert live on tv this performance stood out to me. I made a mental note that I would look up this woman's songs because I've never heard of her before. I thought this song was beautiful ❤
Judith Barnes but she was out of tune for a lot of it.
Same
Judith Barnes shes amazing, have fun listening to her music, its great
Hide and Seek is probably one of her more challenging and raw songs, you'll love everything else by her if you can understand this one song. She's one of a kind. :)
Finn P I must like out of tune singing then! 😁
I'm high key offended by some negative comments about her performance. I didn't know her before and I just cried watching her live cause this was so fucking beautiful, the lyrics, her voice, everything. For Gods sake why can't people just show some respect to each other, specially after the Manchester tragedy? OMG. :(
Exactly! This event was all about showing love and giving hope and I think Imogen Heap did a fantastic job! :)
Sara right? It's really hard to sing live, especially a song whose recording is heavily produced. Besides, this event is supposed to promote love. People should appreciate the beauty in flaws as well. Just my opinion :)
Sara She is a brilliant singer but why use offensive language?
Sara yes u can feel the emotion on her voice. so beautiful. Guess some people have bad taste for music...
I love her but she's always had this weird tone that makes it sound like she's out of tune when she isn't, I don't think most people who haven't listened to her a lot before could really appreciate this. She has poor control in some parts but nailed the important parts. Not everyone can be Miley, with perfect live vocals 😉
just notice how quiet it is. that's how u know its good. the audience is just listening
No idea why people think her voice was off key..this was the best vocal performance of the night and without a doubt the most emotional. I'd never heard of Imogen before this...
I suggest you retrain....
@@shannonbrown560 You didn't get to perform on stage yet or be famous. So sorry about your strive for musical perfection 👌. I strive for lyrical perfection but poorly 😂
Clearly a nerve-wracking and emotional performance. Imogen has one of the best live voices I've had the pleasure of hearing, her full live shows are amazing. Show some respect for an artist that may not fit your definition of good music who's contributed to something beautiful. Whether I care for their style of music or not I hugely respect EVERY artists who gave their time and love to support this cause.
Yes! Perfectly said 🖤
this is probably the dumbest thing I've read in a while.. not trying to be mean.. use Google
This is so cool I didn't even realise Imogen was performing; such a great song, you can hear her emotions so clearly in this performance..
90% of comments saying "stop complaining about the performance" but I haven't seen one comment complaining?
Me too. Maybe they got deleted.
I was watching this on the tv that day and sorry to say had no clue who she was. Then I was like wtf is this incredible song. Its doesn't even matter the singing the lyrics were incredible on the day live.
She’s incredible her high note was impeccable
Imogen Heap is a world class lyricist and songwriter. She might not have Ariana's vocal power, but in her genre she is regarded very highly. Check out her side project Frou Frou and her lengthy discography as Imogen Heap. You may not know of her, but she is a bonafide indie legend.
The people who think this is a bad performance are probably the same ones who love 'Whatcha Say' by Jason Derulo, yet still have no idea where the sample in that song came from..
Or maybe you're making up scenarios to be mad about, and the people who think this is a bad performance are the musicians that don't even know Derulo is and are here for Heap
Honestly I love both :/
Anyone who thinks she did bad. Has no fucking clue how hard those high notes are to hit. She kills this.
I agree - a couple of minor off notes, but generally I thought she did a really great and emotional rendition of a brilliant song.
Exactly my thoughts. As some others I also noticed she was a bit off in the very beginning but I took it as emotion more than anything and not only was she fine later on technically she was also amazing emotionally.
It's her song, she wrote it
Elliot rendition? It's her song!!!
Rendition just means performance - calm down! I know it's her song I own her albums and consider myself a big fan.
I watched her live at this concent and loads didn't know her...the minute she started, silence(then the bit what Jason derulo used came on and people didnt get it was her song he used)
She's a brilliant song writer and singer(not usually into this music but appreciate real artist no matter what genre)
Very underrated.
Chills. Even if this wasn't "perfect", it was heartfelt and haunting.
mochiisyum123 makes me cry every time
but it WAS perfect.
You have to remember that this song was brought out with her voice symphersized, (sure I've not spelt that right) which makes it a very hard song to sing live, so how about stop judging her performance.
Ohana sky Synthesized? ;)
Anne Stratinga thank you, knew it was wrong lol and my brain just didn't want to work.
she puts herself out there as a professional singer, people have every right to judge.
terrible performance.
straittalkn This song was designed with the Vocoder effect in mind (multiple synthesized voices).
Ohana sky well said.
What a shame people can't appreciate the fragility and beauty of this song. Big up to Ariana to inviting a quality artist like Imogen to the concert.
the fact is that Imogen is a composer (an excellent one, I'd say) and as a singer she doesn'tuse autotune, unlike certain colleagues of hers.
Learn what autotune is, produce music yourself, don't talk shit about a vst plugin that you don't even know
If you want to talk good stuff about Imogen you don't need to trash other people either.
She does in fact use auto tune… lmao so does almost every recording artist. Not because they can’t sing on pitch but as an effect.
Thanks to anyone caring enough to read this.
Thank you Imogen,
-Keilani Kamaile
this is so raw. and there's not one note out of tune. it's just pure imogen that requires patience for music and being composed internally
Or maybe you're musically ignorant and can't recognise when someone is clearly coming short of the note they were shooting for.
We're musicians. We're telling you that you're wrong about music. Trust us.
lol what
@@bacicinvatteneaca can u stop replying to every nice comment???? talk about being obsessed
@@szkri 5 months late, buddy - but yes, people's gratuitous and presumptuous ignorance makes me ANGRY.
There were some wrong notes I’m sorry
I LOVE HER. SHE IS THE BEST. THIS SONG IS TIMELESS.
Love Imogen. Awesome. Knowing that this was for children and innocent adults who lost their lives due to murder and terror, I would've cried throughout this entire performance. Good for her for gaining control of the performance.
This was 4 years ago almost. At the time I was 14 did not think she was good at all.
Now at 18 I understand this masterpiece.
So you would have been two when it first came out in 2005.
The singing was not perfect, but damn boy, it went through my soul. Singing isn't about hitting the right notes. It is about captivating your soul. Wonderful.
I am a member of a choir and I can assure you you won't captivate anyone's soul if you continually sing the wrong notes! Imogen hit most of the right notes which was enough to captivate the audience due to the frailty and innocent quality of her voice.;
Fuck off not perfect
It's actually a big deal. Ariana wore the gloves that make music with movement in the air which are being developed by Imogen Heap, especially this songs which is usually performed with electronic chords. She's a legend in the music world
My God.. the courage it takes to come out and play such a stripped-bare version of an already stripped-bare song. And to do so in such an extremely emotional event as this! I think this may actually be my favorite version of this song now.
I've been listening to Imogen and Ariana's covers of her songs nonstop this week and I'm so happy that she performed tonight. What a lovely coincidence.
This was SO good? I can’t believe people saying her voice isn’t good, it is amazing! Such raw felt emotion, this is such a good song too
the heart and soul into this performance is so beautiful
What an incredibly breathtaking and beautiful song.
PERFECT song for this event!!! LOVE YOU IMOGEN HEAP
I've loved Imogen since I discovered her through the Garden State soundtrack as Frou Frou (best movie soundtrack to date in my opinion)... I'm so glad she performed today among the throngs of Top 40 artists. Such a refreshing presence! 💕
Also there’s a bunch of Imogen songs in the movie The Holiday! I loved that movie snd still one of my fav movies!
The degree of difficulty is through the roof. Her execution is near perfect. She reduced me to tears. Again.
I will defend this performance and this legendary woman with all my being.
I’m not really an Imogen Heap fan nor a fan of this song. But this is an incredible performance and I love this version of the song.
@@jeffason69 it's about her father leaving her and her mum when she was a kid and she doesn't really do concerts, somehow Ariana talked her into it because her records has some kind of impact on her, she can sing though just listen to let go by frou frou
I love that she performed this song for this event ❤️
beautiful and inspiring. thank you
Jesus Christ this was beautiful
James Galligan lies
Actually art. Unlike some music nowadays.
It terrible
dank 101 your mother is terrible!
Unelected Bureaucrat no u
True, it was a bit shaky at the beginning, but OMG did she totally turn it around and make up for it in the rest of it. In the second chorus, the original song has the vocoder effect to reach such a high note, and here she does it LIVE and all by herself, don't know anyone who can actually go so low and so high on her notes. I seriously can't believe how emotional and heart-touching the end of the performance was, it gave me goose bumps! This woman is a total genius and, as many have said before, she is pretty much a one-woman band and an absolute vocal prodigy. When you are that awesome, you are allowed to have as many missteps as you want.
If you are criticizing her vocal quality, try to sing this song and we'll see, or better yet, go back to listening to whatever popular plastic singer it is you listen to. Some aren't meant to appreciate such a rare and precious talent. Totally
One of the most beautiful and amazing performances ever... I'm in tears.
Imogen Heap is a true musician. She was NEVER out of tune. I agree that Top 40 NEVER gets this deep and stripped back.
Except you're factually wrong. Go buy a tuner, check note for note. And stop having opinions about music
Amazing.
Her opening her eyes and realising the stadium was as equally in tune, nervous, passionate, many words.....was just lovely. Well done Imogen.
I love this. It was a song that her home country needed to hear from her at that time as well. Her songs literally empty out any toxicity within me and refill my soul and repeat any time I listen to them.
people commenting negative things just have no idea who imogen heap is or what her sound is. love you Imogen, stunning 💙💜💙
Natalie Rowena I'm guessing her sound isn't being out of tune...
redriise Sorry, but I love Imogen heap but my point is her style isn’t to sound out of tune which she did abit in this performance.
Where are the hate comments?
Or maybe you're making this up, we know who she is, and that's precisely why we're saying that this is a garbage performance
this is a hell of a hard song to sing , your performance was wonderful.
I haven't heard this song almost in 6 years, I burst up into tears at 2:08
Such a beautiful song!
Her voice is incredible, the depth and darkness that soars and then breaks like a whisper, beautiful.
We're witnessing a generational talent! Just above any class you can think about! Woww
Take a bow
Where are we?
What the hell is going on?
The dust has only just begun to form
Crop circles in the carpet
Sinking, feeling
Spin me around again
And rub my eyes
This can't be happening
When busy streets
A mess with people
Would stop to hold their heads heavy
Hide and seek
Trains and sewing machines
All those years
They were here first
Oily marks appear on walls
Where pleasure moments hung before
The takeover
The sweeping insensitivity of this
Still life
Hide and seek
Trains and sewing machines
Blood and tears
They were here first
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, that you only meant well
Well of course you did
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, that it's all for the best
Of course it is
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, that it's just what we need
You decided this
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, what did she say?

Pretty hard to do 8 layers of vocal live with your own voice 😅
wow too many people are hating on her performance. This was so pure and her voice is a blessing. If you don't understand you can kindly leave : )
Or maybe it's not about understanding, but about having come to hear a rendition of a song and being disappointed at the fact that it's a bad one
ariana has looked up to imogen heap for years; it's amazing that she performed here for manchester and ariana was able to invite her. so proud of how far ariana has come and all that she has done
This performance is an earth-shattering, raw emotion tribute to all those years that were here first.
Imogen Heap may not be the most consistent vocalist but is a legendary composer. She shines in her creativity and has been a huge inspiration for big names like Ariana and Rihanna.
This song is normally heavily tuned with voice adjustments 5o make is sound robotic. Still sounds great live. Love this song.
it's actually her own voice layered with tons of harmonies and no instruments ! although this version is just incredible as well.
It's the same instrument used in Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk
It progressively got better and better. It was beautiful. She can sing y’all. Chill.
I heard this on the radio yesterday and started crying immediately. Absolutely beautiful, and for such a good cause. Thank you Imogen. #OneLoveManchester
The silence and this song. Are everything.
This was beautiful had me in tears I love Imogen so much :) what a song to sing she brought me to tears
😢💦💦💦💦
She had me in tears too, tears of laughter at how shite she was. Even robbie williams was better than her and he fucking sucked too.

This song tenderness and the fragility of it astounds me :') makes me tear up
Respect. A real talented woman..
I always get goosebumps all over whenever I hear Imogen sing. Her music has been helping me fight through depression for the past 4 years. When I wake up in the morning, and don't feel like I can make it, I just pick up my phone and get her playlist going. I'm so happy she got to perform in front of so many people. She deserves more recognition.
Those high notes are just everything 😍🙌👌
I remember watching this on tv after the bombing and my god...it hit me so hard. Beautiful piece. Beautiful woman. She really did the concert credit. Some of the young ones here won’t understand how legendary this woman is 🖤
’Oh it’s that Jason Derulo song’.
Please leave.
shorfan that’s how I knew her in the first place, much like i knew the song take on me by a-ha from pitball’s sample of feel this moment with Christina Agullara.
I m not shitting you.
Well guys I love this song but you need to get over the fact that it is also Jason Derulo's, and even her talked about how lucky she was that Derulo sampled his song.
I imagine Imogen reading these comments and dying a little inside when she realises some of her fans are so condescending.
it's the age. ppl born after 2k something don't know real music. I met Imogen's music 17 y ago bc of the O.C. and 17 y later still listening to it every once in a while.

I've listened to this amazing singer and songwriter from the very beginning and this was a superb live performance of a very complex song... the more you listen to it, the better it gets. Bravo Imogen, and thank you Ariana for inviting her to this remarkable event.
Very emotional!! So inspiring to see everyone coming together to stand up against hatred and terror. There is good in this world and tonight has shown that love will always win, we will always rise above together! ONE LOVE 💗
The "off pitchiness" makes this sound better imo. Pure emotion. Made me tear up.
such a true vocal, i still remember the first time i heard this. I was on a summer holiday job at a school cleaning floors. Touching performance here.
Beautiful. Will always be a fan.
Im going trough a very painful breakup. This song, that I haven't hear in many years, just helped me reléase a lot that I was holding back. Life goes on, even if it hurts so bad to say goodbye.
she really gets into it at the end - love it
Brilliant. She's the best. I love you Imogen!!!
The beginning was shaky, but then she blew it away. I love her....she's an amazing voice, in the same category as people like Kate Bush.
beautiful voice and song..so unique. i had actually never heard her songs before this and I am in awe.
I just love the way she bends the pitch when she sings.
