The SNES version is the original game. The Genesis version was made by two guys in a very limited time frame - either shortly before release of the SNES version or shortly thereafter (I forgot which). The graphics were drawn for the SNES' 256x224 standard resolution (which 99,98% of all SNES games use). Instead of using the Genesis' 256x224 mode (like Capcom did with SF2) they decided to use the 320x224 mode instead. If they wanted to use that mode _and_ match the different screen ratio they'd have needed to redraw all graphics but they just moved everything to the left and added that black bar.
Source? Because I'm almost positive this is completely false. In an interview many years ago, I distinctly remember it mentioned that both were in production at roughly the same time (and DEFINITELY not 2 people for the Sega version...) and that in fact the SNES version was stretched from the original resolution to meet SNES's standard resolution.
Todd Jameson even wikipedia says the game was first released for SNES...and it shows because of the lack of animation, low res, lack of enemies on screen. Things a much more powerful console like the Genesis can handle easily.
Sounds about right, the Mega drive has a higher resolution, Snes versions of cross platform games would usually feature fatter looking sprites because of the limited width, pixel wise of the screen.
I watch this video every Halloween season. Man, I miss the old Console Wars days. I have to say, I miss Greg as well. You guys complimented each other so well. Always wondered what was said at 9:35 so I isolated the sound effects from the video and here’s what I could understand “Here we are. We’re doing it and we’re gonna get it done and we’re gonna keep talking and someone who’s probably deaf might be able to read this.”
This was awesome you guys! You really went the extra mile with all of the gore effects :) My suggestion for your next video is to compare the Sparkster games.
Sega guy here. Zombies ate my Neighbors was a staple of my childhood. I finally purchased a SNES a few years ago and got Zombies ate my Neighbors. Holy shit. I'm a sega fanboy but it sounds, looks, and controls better on the SNES. I'm sorry Tom Kalinske!
They really aren't better on the snes. That's just fanboyism from ill informed hinty fans being regurgitated over and over again so those that don't know their gaming history keep repeating it. Lower res and massive slow downs will laggy controls plague a lot of snes games whereas the megadrive were largely unaffected. But the myths still spread despite evidence to the contrary.
Hey butters, I know its like a couple of years on, but you can also get it on the wii virtual console. That might be the route that I end up taking since I happen to lack a SNES at the moment.
as some1 who had both and rented the same games for both(multiplats not exclusives) its strickly preference. with that said there are plenty of multiplats that sega did better. here's the thing. snes had the better visuals. of coarse. so did sega a generation prior. nes was inferior to sms yet still sold its multiplats. with that said, the sega had speed and less censorship. besides, visuals aren't everything. ps1 mutiplats looked like garbage compared to n64. do i have to say who won that battle?
@@Gambit771 That sounds like fanboyism to me. If people feel they are better on one system then theres not much you can say to prove otherwise as its based on opinion not on hardware this time unless one system was noticably shitty with lots of games. Personally i love both systems and I know for a fact snes is better at some games not just with graphics but with controls especially when you consider it has more buttons to map to whereas the Sega I have issues while emulating cause some games were 3 button pad and some were 6 buttons
For those who aren't programmers: The problem is Konami developed this game for the SNES and then ported it to Genesis. It should have been the other way around, you generally develop for the stronger console (Genesis is thrice as powerful), and then remove and tweak for the weaker one (like EA did). You see how the characters and enemies lack animations? the absence of little details? Do you see that black square on Genesis? It's because the game was released with the crappy SNES specs in mind including the low resolution (256x224). Genesis most commonly releases games in 320, so they had two options: It was either stretching an already low-res game and make it look like garbage, or putting that black thing there. It's a crying shame the Genny was underutilized with this game.
This JUST got recommended to me. What about the amount of content? Doesn't one of the versions have 55 levels? And, the Genesis was good for what it was. It came out in 89 in NA, while the SNES came out in 91 in NA. That is a whole 2 years! Which is almost forever in video game terms.
I will say this....there NEEDS to be a new Zombies Ate My Neighbors...Yeah I know, we have Dead Rising, but having to deal with swarms of zombies with weapons that break is frustrating and barely fun, plus shooting anything is treated like an afterthought...I want a new Zombies Ate My Neighbors, with unbreakable weapons, shooting that feels fluent, maybe have it in a Diablo 3 style of gameplay, have huge bosses that aren't human, of course have a wide variety of monsters preferably from three styles say from the list of monsters from Universal Pictures, Greek Mythology, and The Divine Comedy...I'm just saying it CAN be done in this day and age, so why not fucking do it...DO IT GAME COMPANIES, DO IT!...But who to do it?...Hmm...The original was made by LucasArts, so maybe it should be done by Double Fine Productions, or Retro Studios?
I could see that but for nostalgic reasons it would have to be 2d top down like it was on Snes and Sega and hopefully just as many secrets and secret levels and more monsters than what you've listed. As you said in this day and age it can be done but lets not throw in celebs and shit for the sake of it. The old movie monsters were niche in a good way but if they make a new one and I see some miley cyrus Justin bieber type bullshit in there I would literally shove it down the throat of the cevelopers
Actually having the added laughing sound fx in that first song on SNES makes is sooo much better than the Genesis version, especially the way the laugh gets fast and faster and more manic as the track goes on. It's gives the music much more ambiance and impact than the Genesis version, as is actually just much cooler and more fun too.
I agree the SNES version is the better of the 2 with this game :) However, there are other minor differences, such as in the level design of some levels, and the time in which the tourists transform into werewolves on some levels, that make each version a completely different game. It would take a big Zombies Ate my Neighbors nerd as myself to notice those minute differences though :P

It's a real treat to find something hidden in a game you've owned for so long. I had that with using the 6 button controller mode on Shinobi 3 for the Genesis. Never knew about it and once I found out I felt like a kid back in the 90's. Good times.
I have to pause the video at the graphics part just to inform you that the Genesis version isn't "compressed". The gameplay area is exactly the same size in both versions, but what's happening is the SNES version is being stretched to the TV's aspect ratio. Genesis has a bigger screen resolution than the SNES, so it can fit the status off to the side, out of the way of the gameplay screen, so it isn't noticeably stretched like the SNES version.
+Baigandine L I read an article lord knows how long ago from the creators. You can look it up yourself on Hardcore Gaming 101 for this game. This game was in development for both the Genesis and SNES at the same time. Also, on the site, it even shows screenshots from the game side by side, and you can see that the playing field on the Genesis and SNES is exactly the same size, but since the Genesis has a bigger resolution (the extra space is used for the HUD) than the SNES, TV's will stretch the screen for SNES games horizontally. You don't even have to take my word for it. Go see for yourself.
***** Stretch implies you wanted the smaller screen in the first place. You are saying it is stretched not compressed. Many preferred the bigger graphics and full screen. Even if the size of the gameplay area is technically (comparatively) the same, everything is smaller and the side bar is distracting. It is true that the sidebar is an unusual feature. It would seem to me the game was intended primarily for the SNES.
+Baigandine L That's not technically the case back then. Stretching didn't imply the game was meant for a smaller screen, it's just SNES had no choice but to be stretched because of the lack of horizontal resolution to match TV aspect ratios. Sure, the game might have been started on the SNES slightly before the Genesis, maybe, but both playing areas are exactly the same size, and the TV doesn't know that it's supposed to keep the SNES at it's default resolution, so it stretches it to match the TV standard at the time. Regardless, the game is still fun on either system.
If you think holding one button down and pressing another slows things down, you're holding the genesis controller wrong. The three buttons are intended for index, middle and ring finger, resting the right side of the controller on your lap. This design is due to Sega's arcade herritage. That's why there are no shoulder buttons. Even on the SNES that's the best way to play some games that don't use the shoulder buttons, like mega man 7; you can jump and fire very fast independently, which you can't do by rocking your thumb back and forth across two buttons.
@@ConsoleWars He seemed like he was trying to blow him off lol instead of eating him. Well you can say that he tried to "eat him". Like sega sucked dick vs nintendo etc. We doing this?
I kinda prefer the Mega Drive colours for a few things, and I don’t like the censorship, but the SNES is better at literally everything else, especially the music.
Both versions are very worthy, almost I say it's a tie. Definition sounds better does not mean better sound. The SNES version is more instrumented, some sounds clearer but the mix is horrible. The sound section generally achieved in the version of Sega is more balanced and definitely sounds better. Regarding the gameplay, the map in this game is fundamental and have 2 mixed on screen maps is worse than having one always visible as in the version of Sega. That latter makes my point of view play on the Sega version is more satisfying.
Good to know that the SNES version is the superior one, because that's the version that I've owned for a long time. I still need to beat it, though. Also, you can change the controls on Super Metroid. I can't play that game for crap with it's default controls.
Sparkster would be a pretty good one to do. The game is almost completely different on Genesis and SNES. Both versions are okay, but the original Rocket Knight Adventures on genesis is the best.
Agreed. This is why I own RKA on the Genesis and don't own Sparkster. That game is pure gold. AND FOR SN 123: , no it's not. RKA is not even available on the SNES. Nice try m8.
***** shaq fu doesn't deserve the hate, it has very good pixel art, music and animations, it's clunky, but the megadrive version is actually better than the average fighting game on megadrive.. most of them are worse. pit fighter is shit dude, the only good thing it had were the digitized actors, that mortal kombat later on did a lot better. It has it's place in history, but it's a crappy game. ShaqFu instead is actually not bad at all but people hate it because the silly fact that it has shaq in it, and for the weird controls that were not like the others. Best fighting game on megadrive are Yu Yu by Treasure, Ultimate MK III and Eternal Champions on megacd, SFII while good was way better on snes
***** ahahaha NO. I'm a megadrive fan, but Super Street Fighter II Turbo completely destroy any other SF version. Even if we stick to the original one, SFII on snes is still better
Jack Mccarthy He's right though, Nintendo back then had pretty strict standards of sexual or overly violent/gory content in games. They put blood into MK2 after they removed it in MK1 and everyone went nuts over how Sega had blood and Nintendo didn't.
Guess this game is the only Genesis game that looks better on a PAL Mega Drive, because the height on the image gets squished a bit (PAL has higher Y resolution then NTSC, but those extra pixels are never used for anything and just becomes black bars), and that compensates for the horizontally squished image due to the status bar =)
Damn, the Genesis really sounds terrible compared to the SNES version, makes the lower sample rate of the Genesis obvious. They made very good use of the SNES hardware, it's one of my favourite game soundtracks ever.
+Adam Power that seems to be true with every multi plat of that generation. genesis has great exclusives like sonic and streets of rage 2 (as does SNES)..but the games that or on both consoles, the SNES version seems to always be better especially when it comes to the sound and graphics
+casey tyler The Genesis' shortcomings became particularly obvious whenever a game featured digitised speech. You could really hear the grit of the low sampling rate. Which is not to slag off the Genesis. The Streets Of Rage soundtrack is one of the finest examples of truly great game music on any system and shows what the Genesis was capable of in the right hands. There is certainly no shortage of rubbish SNES game soundtracks either. Bart's Nightmare springs to mind, what a mess, plodding bleepy shite. Just goes to show that it's all about how you use it at the end of the day.
3:19 The SNES screen is 256 x 192. The Megadrive is 320 x 224. The gameplay window is actually exactly the same pixel size on the Megadrive as it is on the SNES : If you stand in the same spot on both versions, you should be able to see exactly the same areas of the screen. This probably indicates a lazy port.
@@rodzapiola Killer Instinct is slow and sloppy. I don't know what game you played but it wasn't Killer Instinct. Eternal Champions is smoother, has way more moves and much more fun gameplay. I don't care who said what. They are morons. Eternal Champions is a work of art as well as a very playable and fun game. KI is just awful on the SNES. It hasn't even held up well at all. It's even worse now than it was back then. Good try though!! You lose.

Super Street Fighter 2 especially. Arcade or console versions. Any retro fighting game really. I like most of them.
I am going to have to go with Sega Genesis in my opinion. Having the map and other stuff on the side of the screen and not covering the gameplay up wins it for me. Plus a red jacket is better than purple anyway :P
Nothing wrong with liking the "inferior" version more. It's a preference thing. This is more of a rigid grading based overall on content etc. I have plenty of games I like for Sega or SNES which aren't technically "better". You should always choose the game you like more over someone else's opinion, because a large portion of it is just that. Opinion. Can't be wrong :)
I have a GREAT idea for a next episode. You should review the BUBSY games for the SNES and the Genesis called Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind. And to spice up the episode, instead of figuring out which game is better, talk about which Bubsy games is WORSE. How about it? =)
Love Zombies ate my Neighbors on the Genesis. I totally disagree on sound though. The Genesis version has more of a B movie feel just like the classic horror films that it is imitating. Great video guys, no matter what console you play it on, you are in for a good time.
I'm more partial to the Genesis version only because it was the version I've always had. Both versions are cool though. I like that Genesis isn't censored, but I do wish we had the flame thrower. I guess with the map thing, I can take it either way. A buddy of mine came over a couple of weeks ago, and we busted out this game - neither of us had played it in who knows how long. We definitely had a blast going through it.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors was such a fun game for the time. Also I had no idea that the purple ooze was originally gonna be blood. I thought the red goo was slime, had SNES kept the red stuff, I have no doubt that the game would've gained an M rating.
I always loved the sound effects in the music. When I played the game on Genesis later I was really disappointed that they weren't able to include them.
Good video and from what I can tell there is not much difference between the games and both are really good. I think it just comes down to what console you have.
3:12 Old video but that point is completely false, regardless of which version you play the game window is always 256 pixels wide. It's a tradeoff from the 320x224 of the Genesis while the SNES is 256x224 only. I think the Sega developer appreciated that the HUD didn't have to be overlayed on the game window that way, as 256x224 is a supported screen mode on the Genesis. SNES HUD overlays are a mixed bag since I've seen it work when small but when big it obscures too much Eg. Jurassic Park. As far as sprite color count both versions have exactly the same amount, sure the SNES has a more vibrant system palette range but that game is an excellent example of cross platform development where the Genesis version isn't badly muted and dithered which happened more and more in the later day of 16-bit.
You guys have gotten better for sure, but one complaint I have is that you group together music and SE. They should be two separate categories, because I've seen many cases where one console has a musical edge over the other, but the opposite console has higher quality/more sound effects.
Great video as always, but i found strange how this is the first time that you really show the 6-button controller, sequels? Top Gear 2? probably not but that would be awesome.
Apparently the developers favoured the Snes version more because that was the original version. What is sad is when the game was released in Europe it was censored a fair bit to the point I decided to buy the Genesis version.
Snes - BWA HA HA HAA!!

Yeah, black bar with a radar and hud are handy so you don't have them on-screen.

I'm here after they announced zombies ate my neighbors was announced for Nintendo switch
Rewatching this video because Zombies Ate My Neighbhors is finally re-releasing on modern consoles! :D Hoping it's the SNES version of course.
You guys do an excellent job on these.
+Kevin Ramlow Thank You!
I used to the Genesis version after school. I have to say, that 3-button controller made things harder.
I kinda prefer the Mega Drive colours for a few things, and I don’t like the censorship, but the SNES is better at literally everything else, especially the music.
Rented this on Sega from Blockbuster in the 90s. I really liked it. Decades later, got the SNES version. Love it!!! Great review
Neighbors are my zombies
Both versions are very worthy, almost I say it's a tie.
Definition sounds better does not mean better sound. The SNES version is more instrumented, some sounds clearer but the mix is horrible. The sound section generally achieved in the version of Sega is more balanced and definitely sounds better.
Regarding the gameplay, the map in this game is fundamental and have 2 mixed on screen maps is worse than having one always visible as in the version of Sega.
That latter makes my point of view play on the Sega version is more satisfying.
Okay, I had no idea that Herc's Adventures was considered a spiritual successor to ZAMN and Ghoul Patrol, but that actually makes perfect sense! :O
Started watching these with my 6yo daughter and she loves it. It’s probably her favorite UA-cam channel
Oh nice! Its always cool when people watch with their kids
Good to know that the SNES version is the superior one, because that's the version that I've owned for a long time. I still need to beat it, though. Also, you can change the controls on Super Metroid. I can't play that game for crap with it's default controls.
As corny and nerdy as they are, i am addicted to console wars 👍
I'm about to smoke a blunt and play this game right now on the SNES lol haven't played this since I was a kid And I'm 38 now
Sparkster would be a pretty good one to do. The game is almost completely different on Genesis and SNES.
Both versions are okay, but the original Rocket Knight Adventures on genesis is the best.
No snes
Agreed. This is why I own RKA on the Genesis and don't own Sparkster. That game is pure gold. AND FOR SN 123: , no it's not. RKA is not even available on the SNES. Nice try m8.
Hell yeah, love your vids! Once again, great game choice and hilarious zombie/halloween skit! I still say you guys need to get the Shadowruns hehe.
I'd love to see shadowrun! :D
Nintenjoel Thanks dude. We'll def do Shadowrun one day.
Shadowrun would be great since both games are very different.
Love that game. I know I don't care for zombie killing games as it hurts me, you know. But I love this one.
Guys, do Cool Spot for Genesis and SNES.
+arbereshe If I remember correctly, the Genesis version has more levels, so we already know who wins.
Thomas Liu
I believe the SNES has more levels and looks better too.
11:50 I couldn't help but notice that his ammo isn't depleting.
I like the take on this stuff you guys do. well played!
The music was so good for this game. Definitely a steal when my mom picked it up for 8 bucks.
Love your videos. I actually had no idea that Zombies was even on Sega! Always thought it was a SNES exclusive
Hey guys, compare Sparkster or Rocket Knight Adventures from Konami!!
+OmegaJackRed666 what makes you think I'm impatient? I'm offering a suggestion lol
Pit Fighter is terrible on every platform
***** I really dislike it, even in the original arcade version. Shaq-Fu on megadrive is a masterpiece compared to it imho :P
I think the blood of the Super Nintendo version is purple because Nintendo does not allow violence or offensive things
canal nota A That's exactly why.
Dude what? Nah that can't be it... That's dumb
canal nota A well for mortal kombat 2 there was blood and gore
Jack Mccarthy He's right though, Nintendo back then had pretty strict standards of sexual or overly violent/gory content in games. They put blood into MK2 after they removed it in MK1 and everyone went nuts over how Sega had blood and Nintendo didn't.
good point i never thought of that
Love your videos, make more of them.
Guess which version the creators favoured?
i cant stand the monster noises in the snes music
P Ferreira which version did the creators favour?
Loving the channel, gentlemen.
Thank you!
Do yall ever get any visits from Turbografx or Neo Geo?
Thank the Halloween gods its back Jack!!!!
The sound effects really work with the music for ZAMN... Love the remixes for the music too.
This old episode is wild and so gross lol. Cool these have been created for so long
3:19 The SNES screen is 256 x 192. The Megadrive is 320 x 224. The gameplay window is actually exactly the same pixel size on the Megadrive as it is on the SNES : If you stand in the same spot on both versions, you should be able to see exactly the same areas of the screen.
This probably indicates a lazy port.
NIce try...
@@stopthrm He's right, Bozo. Genesis had better horizontal screen resolution.
The Zombie effects looked pretty good. :)
do Killer Instinct vs Eternal Champions please
Eternal Champions is much better than Killer Instinct. There's no need to do a video on that one. It's not even close at all.
You lose.
@@rodzapiola I have them both too and the arcade version of Killer Instinct as well. I eat, sleep, and breathe retro fighting games, and I'll crush you at any one of them.
@@rodzapiola it's sloppy, so it isn't worth playing on any speed. It's just a lackluster game. Eternal Champions is the better game. There is just way more to EC than there is KI.
@@rodzapiola dude I'll crumble you at Street Fighter 2, any version of it, MK 1,2,3,4, and on to 11. Weaponlord, Eternal Champions, Killer Instinct, the Tekken games and so on. I don't care what you have. I have those games too. I was a top player of Mortal Kombat in my area at age 10 when the game came out in 1992, as well as one of the top players of MK2, crushed fools left and right at Street Fighter 2 as well. Super Street Fighter 2 especially. Arcade or console versions. Any retro fighting game really. I like most of them.
That moment when you pulled the can of beer out of your trick or treat bucket XD Lmfao
There are classics such as Godfather Part 2, Aliens, Robocop and now there’s this episode.
I came here after the beautiful limitedrun re-release. I WILL NEVER forgive Di$ney for shutting down LucasArts...😤
6:33 sounds like they're banging cardboard tubes together. Ooh, scary!
When are you two making another video because you are hilarious!
Drew Thompson Thanks! Hopefully in about a week.
Console Wars Really! you guys are awesome glad I found your channel!
Some of my favorites are Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Ghostbusters, and Aaahh! Real Monsters.
One of my favorite games ever!!
Bring this to PS+ on PS4 for free with online!!!!!!!!!!
***** I'm 28 and just got a PS4. I would love if this was one of the free monthly PS+ games on PS4. Nostalgia OVERLOAD!
@@raiders7528 ikr
Perhaps you could do 'The Daze Before Christmas', as a Christmas special.
I like this idea. A nice little "one-off" where they do things a little bit different.
megamarsonic
That would be awesome.
TheDefectiveTurret Pretty cool idea. If we do that game, that's the way we'll do it.
Console Wars Awesome. =) Hope I'll be credited for the idea. =P
TheDefectiveTurret Of course you will.
Love Zombies ate my Neighbors on the Genesis. I totally disagree on sound though. The Genesis version has more of a B movie feel just like the classic horror films that it is imitating. Great video guys, no matter what console you play it on, you are in for a good time.
Wait... where the hell is the flamethrower?!
Really enjoying your videos, 16 bit gaming was a golden era. Would love to see a smash tv super nintendo vs genesis. Keep up the good work guys :)
We do have those games. one day!
Great video. Now that I watched it I do kind of remember it lol thanks for dropping the link for me on your other video
that's one game I haven't played yet, and thanks for helping me know which one to buy!
I love a bunch of video games, but I could only play Zombies Ate My Neighbors on SNES for the rest of my life and be happy. Best game ever
all it took was this video for me to sub you guys
i been playing zombies ate my neighbors for snes for years but i never found a flame thrower
You guys did this dracula Castlevania Frankenstein, what Halloween games could possibly be left to compare? *thinking eomji*
Thanks for all videos! Greetings:)
+Jezreel Molina No problem!
am a big fan on the sega!! as a child but snes is way better
I grew up with the snes version but I think having that sidebar for the map and ammo etc looks better. I need to try the genesis version finally
Do Sunset Riders, that was a bad ass game for both consoles!
3:38 That's a Great point about the Maps! One of the reasons i prefer the Genesis version.
You guys have gotten better for sure, but one complaint I have is that you group together music and SE. They should be two separate categories, because I've seen many cases where one console has a musical edge over the other, but the opposite console has higher quality/more sound effects.
Pink Sheep: Are you serious? No Zombie is uglier than Purple Shep.
Great video as always, but i found strange how this is the first time that you really show the 6-button controller, sequels? Top Gear 2? probably not but that would be awesome.
I just got these not to long ago for both systems. I got the Gens version yesterday complete for $7 from a thrift store.
Apparently the developers favoured the Snes version more because that was the original version. What is sad is when the game was released in Europe it was censored a fair bit to the point I decided to buy the Genesis version.
This wasnt a fair fight.....
Dan was distracted by his mosquito bites!
May I suggest MAUI MALLARD IN COLD SHADOW as a game to do? SNES and Genesis are different enough to have some good discussion material! :)
