I took this as a complete reeboot of the Brosnan era. I loved it. I know this song by heart. I however was surprised about the White/Keys duet. I adore that jam too. I was sure they'd keep the rock influence. But then we got 3 ballads. Powerful vocals, don't get me wrong, but Sam and Billie just copy pasted Adele tbh
This is not only the greatest Bond theme ever written, but perhaps one of the greatest songs ever written for a film. A lot of the other themes are written either about the villain themselves (and some of these are awesome btw), or just anything. All they need is just to have the title of the movie in them. Not that there aren't other great ones, but this speaks to the character of James Bond himself.
@@Theruler091I like to imagine it's a conversation between them. Like in the chorus, M says, "You can't deny the prize: it may never fulfill you, it longs to kill you, are you willing to die?" Then Bond responds with, "The coldest blood runs through my veins, you know my name."
I always took the reveal of Bonds face at 2:55, while the song repeats “you know my name” as a giant “fuck you” to the people who hated the casting of Daniel Craig.
@@josequintero7250 that's because his physical appearences was the opposite of what James Bond should look. @@tan_tama1354 Every Bond-actor has been best on one of many aspects of cinematic Bond. Daniel Craig showed Bond's bestial, crude traits better than any other had.
Well of course, it's only natural that the best Bond movie would have the best theme. I say that, but I can never decide whether I prefer this movie or GoldenEye. Both awesome films with awesome themes.
Fun fact, Chris Cornell found it extremely hard to work the words "Casino Royale" into a song, so he worked on the fact that despite being a secret agent, everyone knew who James Bond was, so he made his song about that, hence "You Know My Name" was born.
Actually, I think it's more like this is a song about M. I don't know if this is a confirmed fact or if I read is somewhere as possible theory, but look at the lyrics. It perfectly describes M and his/her relationship with Bond.
ExcessHorsepower I was attached to him from the beginning. because it was like Cornell knew my name. Bond was a perfect match for him and Craig😩🚬🚬😩😱😵😢💊💊🌷🌷RIP

@@vksasdgaming9472 maybe it’s because skyfall was amazing also to you saying the academy doesn’t award British films 1917 won multiple awards last year and that’s British.
Quite possibly the best decisions ever made for Bond: Chris Cornell on theme and Daniel Craig as Bond - make it gritty, real and make Bond the sweating TNT he's supposed to be. Genius.
They had to make serious changes. The Bond brand was in jeopardy of becoming irrelevant. It was starting to come across as goofy in comparison to the Bourne and Mission Impossible series. It seems to have worked out fairly well.
I was surprised when i read a Rolling Stone article about Bond songs that this song counted as one of the worst. For my opinion "You know my name" is a powerful songs which describes the right character of James Bond in our days. Also i believe that the late Chris Cornel gave one of the best performances for a Bond song. Unforgetable.
We seem to forget the version played in the movie is edited from the original which was saddled with a bridge that was oddly out of place. There seems to be problem with all the Bond theme songs post John Barry where the writers and composer cannot just get to the fucking point.
The world will definitely miss you. You were one of the greatest rock vocalist of all time and a huge part of my childhood. The world is definitely bummed, you left us too soon. CHRIS CORNELL: 1964 - 2017 #restinpeacechriscornell
I've seen this be low on a lot of bond song lists by critics. I think it's one of the best and people just hating because it is a significant shift like Casino Royale was from the norm which was obviously the right move for the franchise.
I know many people didn’t like this opening when it first came out, because many people didn’t associate rock music with James Bond. But I thought this was an excellent opening (and to me the best) as it set the tone for a new Bond (at the time) and a change of style. Cornell nailed the feeling of this song and I think it works perfectly for a Bond movie. I’m glad that it’s gotten more respect over the years. RIP Chris Cornell And we’ll miss you as Bond Daniel Craig.
It was perfect for the new era of bond; more grit, hard hitting, raw. It immediately smacks you round the face from the first note. Still my fav bond song, though my Soundgarden fandom probably adds bias!
There will be no Bond theme more accurate and excellently performed like this one. The lyrics and melody can only be compared to Paul McCartney's Live and Let Die, which in itself is an unbeatable classic.
Probably the "deepest" lyrics ever written for a Bond movie theme. Quote from Wikipedia: Cornell thought it was a strange offer, considering that he is American, and imagined that he would perform a secondary song in the film instead of the main theme. Cornell declared he liked the Bond movies, particularly the ones with Sean Connery, but that he "wasn't really a big fan of the last several movies". But Daniel Craig's casting as James Bond intrigued the musician, and he decided to accept the job. Cornell then went to Prague to visit the film's shooting, and was much impressed with the film's emotional content after he was shown a rough cut of Casino Royale. In Prague he also met the score composer, David Arnold, who suggested writing a song "that echoed the film score". The composers started their writing separately, Cornell in his apartment in Paris, and Arnold in his house in London. Cornell stated that he had some difficulties with composing: "It is difficult, I think, to write lyrics for a character, so really I just kind of wandered around for about a month not thinking about it too much, until I sort of formulated some idea of a way that I could approach it, where I'm kind of relating to what's in the character in the movie. And because this particular Bond is very edgy, but also has a lot of emotional depth, it's a lot easier."Later the two musicians met and showed each other's ideas, and according to Arnold "it was almost like we wrote two parts of the same song."Cornell wrote lyrics, to which Arnold added some lines and later music. Some of Arnold's ideas included the song's title, the heavy introduction, and "having the same genetic material as the Bond theme, but in a different order and in a different shape".
I swear!! I hated it when people talked of adels skyfall without having reckonize the greatness of this song. It's this song that the ideal hero listens too before going to his death. One who goes agaisnt all odds and succeed thanks to all the quality's and competence a human can muster, even the favors of wind. one who outsmarts another that had every aspect of his plan in motion to win. Putting himself in the deadliest of danger beceause he cannot turn a blind eye to evil
It's not just that his vocal range spans four octaves, it's that he can sing well while spanning them. I can make my voice deep, and high pitched, but to carry a tune and sing well while doing so... nope.
SuperForace he didn’t have six octaves, not even the great Freddie Mercury had a six range octave voice, Freddie had only a 5, so therefore Chris had a 4
naxo I just watched Quantum again for the first time since theaters and it's a great film, it's just disappointing coming off of the masterpiece of Casino Royale

@@jayu9642 its garbage, they ruin the intro of the movie and in a james bond movie that its a terrible thing to do
I took this as a complete reeboot of the Brosnan era. I loved it. I know this song by heart. I however was surprised about the White/Keys duet. I adore that jam too. I was sure they'd keep the rock influence. But then we got 3 ballads. Powerful vocals, don't get me wrong, but Sam and Billie just copy pasted Adele tbh
Agreed
Out of all the recent bond songs this the the greatest Chris Cornell is a legend
Or M I always thought the song was M to bond
@@Theruler091I like to imagine it's a conversation between them. Like in the chorus, M says, "You can't deny the prize: it may never fulfill you, it longs to kill you, are you willing to die?" Then Bond responds with, "The coldest blood runs through my veins, you know my name."
One of the best bond themes for one of the best bond movies starring one of the best Bond girls and one of the best James bonds
Yeah and plus that bond girl did some full frontal nudity in the early 2000s
+The Reaper Hahahahaha yeah true!
+Jai Evans true
+Jai Evans And one of the best villains, Mads Mikkelsen.
+Arkaskas1 Good point!
I always took the reveal of Bonds face at 2:55, while the song repeats “you know my name” as a giant “fuck you” to the people who hated the casting of Daniel Craig.
I have no idea why people hate Daniel as bond.
@@josequintero7250 that's because his physical appearences was the opposite of what James Bond should look. James Bond is a tall guy (around 180 cm) with black hair and blue eyes, whereas Daniel is a blonde and height only 177/178 cm. Some people also thought that he looks too "cold", robotic-face and "villain-ly". There was no James Bond charisma at all. That's what they say
A bit fun fact:
Talking about appereances, Timothy Dalton is considered as the actor that very close with Ian Fleming's description of James Bond
@@tan_tama1354 Every Bond-actor has been best on one of many aspects of cinematic Bond. Daniel Craig showed Bond's bestial, crude traits better than any other had.

This to me is the best James Bond theme, I really like this song.
Well of course, it's only natural that the best Bond movie would have the best theme.
I say that, but I can never decide whether I prefer this movie or GoldenEye. Both awesome films with awesome themes.
+Althalus2010 This is a Realistic Film GoldenEye was good but it wasn't as Grabbing it was a film that made you want to turn your Brain off
bond uses defibrillator to defibrillate himself.... realism? lol you are so dumb
Well he doesn't actually mange too does he. He was saved by the girl. So in that sense it was ok.
Rob Willis oh yes
Fun fact, Chris Cornell found it extremely hard to work the words "Casino Royale" into a song, so he worked on the fact that despite being a secret agent, everyone knew who James Bond was, so he made his song about that, hence "You Know My Name" was born.
Actually, I think it's more like this is a song about M. I don't know if this is a confirmed fact or if I read is somewhere as possible theory, but look at the lyrics. It perfectly describes M and his/her relationship with Bond.

I believe it’s one of two bond intros to not have the silhouette of a naked woman in it.

I still don't understand how this wasn't nominated for an Oscar!
Two reasons:
#1 It's from British film and Oscars are awarded to American movies (except foreign film)
#2 James Bond and such crude franchise DOES NOT DESERVE ARTISTIC OSCARS

Anddddd BANG!!! If you weren’t immediately blown away, reassured and in awe within a title song for truly world class opening, you never will be.
RIP Chris Cornell. Such a shock !
@steve. Correct. Absolutely my favorite Bond song, followed by Tina's Golden Eye
"If you come inside things will not be the same" wise words
This could have easily been the theme song for the entire Daniel Craig Bond series.
Proving once again that Rolling Stone is tone deaf.
Rolling stone is fake
The first mistake was reading anything from Rolling Stone.
Rolling Stone is also the rag that panned Led Zeppelin upon the release of their first album...🤣
The world is definitely bummed, you left us too soon.

being 62 years old and Bond fan since 1973 this song is in my top 5
I've seen this be low on a lot of bond song lists by critics. I think it's one of the best and people just hating because it is a significant shift like Casino Royale was from the norm which was obviously the right move for the franchise.
I know many people didn’t like this opening when it first came out, because many people didn’t associate rock music with James Bond. But I thought this was an excellent opening (and to me the best) as it set the tone for a new Bond (at the time) and a change of style.
Cornell nailed the feeling of this song and I think it works perfectly for a Bond movie. I’m glad that it’s gotten more respect over the years.
RIP Chris Cornell
And we’ll miss you as Bond Daniel Craig.

@@redskies4530 bring it on!
Live n let due was a bond song ?
@@bironjames9948Yea. It’s literally the title of one of the movies
Probably the "deepest" lyrics ever written for a Bond movie theme.
Quote from Wikipedia:
Cornell thought it was a strange offer, considering that he is American, and imagined that he would perform a secondary song in the film instead of the main theme.

It's not just that his vocal range spans four octaves, it's that he can sing well while spanning them. I can make my voice deep, and high pitched, but to carry a tune and sing well while doing so... nope.

5. On her Majesty's Secret Service
6. The Spy Who Loved Me or maybe Octopussy? (Roger Moore was my least favorite Bond below Craig, would love to hear from a Roger Moore fan what their favorite Bond film of his is, but Casino blows all of Moore's films out of the water imo)
