The Chicago Department of Transportation opens these bridges twice a year: in the Spring to let the sailboats with the oversized masts out into Lake Michigan, and in the Fall to put the sailboats back into winter storage. On the bridges with heavy traffic, they have to send out workers to chase people off the bridge who insist on crossing it when the bells go off.
WOAH, the old bell on the streetlight pole is very cool! I wonder what they sound like? I wished they were still used! They appear to have a bronze/bronze alloy bell as it is corroded greenish.
@@flandox6659 as a railroad worker I would like to inform that the bell on this is a WRRS mechanical CROSSING bell the lights on this are also CROSSING lights from the 1800 to 1900s
I wonder if drawbridges are the only road feature where mechanical bells are still currently manufactured for, since railways are phasing them out it seems

Thank you, I also wish these bells were still in use for signal. I believe this bell is a WRRS locomotive style crossing bells.

@LTGRAILROAD yes they are, I believe the style of dropper signal began in around the early 1920s
I like how the Traffic light Spells out S-T-O-P! That's so cool!
Yes, me too!! Every drawbridge in the country should have this kind of drawbridge signal!
What kind of bell is on this bridge? I love their sound
The bell is one of the new Western Cullen Hayes 0333 mechanical bells. I also love their sound.

Most likely Western Cullen Hayes is the company that still produces them
Ow, the brass gongs are so loud...
Ikr, these are new WCH bells

They do, but they are WCH bells with brass gongs
