Quick note: I LOVE the Boum. But won’t be using it live after all. I’ll be filming a video on this tiny eurorack setup I have that’ll be my end of chain! It’s sick and I can’t wait to show you.
Had the BOUM for one week now and have to admit that with the right settings it smokes my RLNA+Sidechain HPF Combo for Live use. I mostly make Live 140BPM techno with my partner and it just adds that grit and glue I need. Had an idea for a modular "mastering" chain with a stereo eq, messor comp and some saturation/distortion but I would cost twice as much than the BOUM here in Europe.
Hi Ricky, I have a perfect solution for you on how to use Sp404 mk2. Load it with multiple long ambient/organic samples, like rain, cityscape, people talking and just some fooley noises. Those samples can be even up to 1hour long if I'm not mistaken. Than you set the pads to loop mode without gate, trigger all of them to keep them running, and just mute them all. This way you get a free running noise machine. Now you can solo/unmute the pads you want to use, and you use the isolator of filter to slowly mix them in and out. In other words, it's a perfect tool for adding organic noises of the track intro/outro sections, or when all other parts are filtered down. Organic stuff like this will also make your set much more interesting. It's super easy to setup, so just give it a quick try. Good luck :)
Isn't it time for you to get in contact with Stimming for a nice video on his own Mastering chain device that he co developed and that is now released (very expensive, but I'm sure you can work something out)
The color pallet and composition on this video is perfect. I love the lanterns putting just a slight glow on fern frond and the keyboards, the Rembrandt lighting on your face, the muted colors of your shirt, hat, the wallpaper, then the little pop of bold colors of your electronics in the corner.
Nice to see the Dawless setup back. The first ever synth tube video I saw was one of your Dawless setup videos. Glad to see you sticking to the 3 pieces of kit rule. My first dawless setup was inspired by that video and I still make all my music using no more than 3 pieces of kit at a time.
That's a sweet setup. Thank you for taking the time to explain how your signal chain / effects processing / Midi / tracks are all routed. I think a lot of content creators gloss over that part, but it's essential to set up your gear correctly to maximize the utility of each piece. I was a little surprised your Hologram pedal didn't make it, but I guess the table was getting crowded?
Just a tip about trigless program changes. I would set it's condition to 1st so it triggers only once when the pattern changes. It seems that it is not an issue with PEAK but I had a synth which would reset a preset with every loop of a pattern. And that's a problem if You want to change parameters of a synth manually on the fly.
That's a really nice and compact setup! Thanks for sharing. Here's something that's helped me overcome the 16 banks in OT vs 8 banks in DT scenario (as long as you use 8 patterns or less per track). Once you get to Bank I (9) in OT, it restarts to A in DT. By using patterns 1-8 in banks A-H and ptns 9-16 in banks I-P, you can structure a set of up to 16 tracks using the OT as master, making the most out of parts in banks in the OT.
Hardly. I had a way better set-up in the 90s - Korg workstation and a big sampler was all I needed to get up on stage live. This set-up is way more (needlessly) complicated and far less capable.
Hey Ricky I think it's awesome how you split the melodies up with the midi tracks on the Digitakt. Because I have been doing that ever since I got the Digitakt with my Tetra. Provided the melody is within 4 voice polyphony which is no issue for me. Also multi-timbral synths are a powerful combo with the Digitakt sequencer. There's nothing like having literally 4+ synthesizer from one box.
Looks great! I miss my DT, I sold it to get my second OT, which is awesome but I still end up missing my 8tracks of drums from the DT. But anyways I wanted to say that perhaps what you are missing here is something like a Novation launchpad pro mk3. It really becomes the headquarters for all. As a midi controller for the OT, you can also play keys in scales for your peak. And you can create crazy 64 sound sample chains on the OT. Highly recommend!
I think you had a good excuse for why (and most of the rest of us) took a loooong break from live performance. edit- 9:28 This is a great tip! I have found that any monotimbral synth can still benefit from having multiply OT midi track applied to it. You can even have midi CC/LFO info on some tracks to bring in and out!
The compressor on the 404 mk2 is quite nice, so maybe that could fill in for people who don't have a compressor or limiter to route everything to? Just a thought.
Hey Ricky I got quite a similiar setup. Try Roland TR-6s for the transitions. It really is a monster for his size and can run 100% on battery (as you probably know). Great work and keep it up!
Way to go for getting back into performing live again! Another option is to use the 404 end of chain for performace effects AND compression. I've been doing that and its been working for me so far.
Dope content per usual bro. I'd say from similar experience.... Take the SP because the second you realize it has exactly what you need for a particular moment, your going to be kicking yourself! All for the vibe man, anything for the vibe!!
Thanks for making such a detailed video on the specifics of your live setup! Regarding your thoughts on the sp4040. I use a korg mini kaosspad2 for a similar end of chain effect, and I get where you are coming from wrt. whether something like that is a bit overdone and grating. From seeing this video, I think you probably have a huge effective vocabulary of transitions just with reverb, delay, feedback, patch changes and mutes of samples, synth, and drum parts. So there is probably a lot to be gained from pracilticing different ways of speaking with that vocabulary. I find I use the korg mkp2 mainly as an emergency transition machine when I am getting ahead of myself, so for me it is still super important to feel safe with a go to effect when performing. But I don't see it as necessarily contributing anything too interesting or something that is essential to the music I like to perform.
I love all the equipment and appreciate your talent. One of my takes on “Dawless” that is simpler and faster way to make music. This setup seems more complicated than a computer with DAW. Thanks for the video.
Great video this week! That live set sounds SO TASTY! How do we get you to NYC to play this out for us live? On the subject of the 404: I bought the MK2 and sold it a few months later. It's obvious to me now how a whole scene grew up around it, but the lo-fi aesthetic and effects palette doesn't feel that fresh anymore. Plus, Roland has recently been baking a lot of the same effects into its other units, so, for example, I get my 404 vinyl sim, and some 303 reverbs from my TR8s. The 404 effects are nice but I wouldn't bring one to a set just as an effects box. Besides, you can build a beat repeat on the Octatrack with a pickup track and a random LFO... BTW Much love to those compact creations videos you used to make - they gave me the blueprint! My live setup these days is an Octatrack, the TR8s, and an optional "guest synth" that changes from show to show...
The whole video is great as always, but holy crap the program change on the Digitakt has always frustrated me and now my mind is blown. dang, thank you
Amazing, how many hoops you've got to jump through to get stuff done on the Digitakt that you could do 20 years ago on an MPC 1000... And yes, the newer Elektron boxes can do stuff that you can't do that easily on an older MPC. But when it comes to MIDI control and general sequencing, I really don't get why Elektron still goes for all these arbitrary restrictions in 2022...
OMG jut priced the Octatrack! Excuse the newbie mental processing here. But if I put that between two my Electribe E2's and added your new end of the line box then is would improve my sound quality and give me way more control and effects etc???
mmmm after thinking about it the Boum sounded better to me and i didnt REALLY need the glitch FX thaaatt bad, but what i have now is a small eurorack with an icredible multiband compressor which i need to film later
@@RickyTinez sounds dope! :) Meanwhile, for mortals like me, Takt+SP takes it away. :) Currently a colleague lent me his 0-Coast - I highly recommend you check it out :) posted a little jam on my channel too..
As always, an inspiring video. I'm trying to pare my system down to bare essentials too. It's challenging because you can always come up with a reason to add just one more piece of hardware.
that’s pretty smart idea to sent 4 digi tracks to same synth and effectively spread melody to 4 idependently mute-able layers.. Very creative approach !
Thoughts about the ability to use external MIDI controllers with the SP-404 mkii? I would think you would be all over it for the possibility of automating the 4 separate effects with another piece of kit.
I’m using octatrack & Digitakt for my live set as well. Do you prefer to write midi on the DT & just use OT for master clock? I’m doing midi on the OT currently, but thinking maybe it would be better to write midi on the DT ? Then the OT becomes live mixer + effects. How would this be beneficial do you think?
So interesting... I didn't know there was a 3 oscillator analouge synth out there beside Moog. Excuse me though.... I am having trouble discerning what the difference here is between NCO and DCO?
Thank you for the insight! 1: Offical RT Peak Soundbank when? 2: Beat repeat. No. I mean, for subtle individual elements, sure. As master effect, heck no. 9/10 it subtracts more than it adds. You found the groove. Don't wreck it.
I just got an RNLA for a bit under US$200 (which turned into $400 in down under dollarbucks). Was delivered an hour ago and spent last 45 min listening to same beat on M:S into Syntakt into it and just going between bypass and on. So good.
I’m starting to put a set together with a similar setup - OT, Syntakt, DJS-1000 and Microfreak. I’m starting to realise I really need to get some kind of compressor at the end. Probably gonna go for an Analog Heat MK1.
Hey Ricky, Love the option to switch between patches on the Peak using the Digitakt... That being said, is there anyway to have the two patches play together at the same time? I know the Summit is multitimbral, my guess is the Peak is as well? Thanks dude! You rock.
Have you ever played around with the FMR RNC? I've been hovering over the buy button on one of them for ages now, but keep getting distracted by the OTO Boum, and the Analog Heat. Can't make up my mind, and there isn't anywhere I can find to get my hands on any of them to test out where I live.
GOD! That sample your mixed up on 1:33 🥶🥶 Ricky, pasa alguna sesión como esa pls que no encuentro nada tuyo de ese estilo. O vente para España!! y voy a verte jajaja
Quick question: Is the peak multitimbral? Cause after watching that video (which is great btw), I tried to split polyphony over multiple tracks as well on my microfreak, but it doesn't seem to work. Peace!
Those OTO BOUM units were out of stock for such a long time. I eventually caved and got a HXstomp instead. But I totally agree about the limiter at the end of the chain.
Great tips! The trick to deal with program changes is money. Do you ever have issues with the Peak switching to the wrong patch? I am attempting the same thing with my Virus Ti and sometimes the Virus will change to the wrong patch,
Very cool setup with the elektrons! So your drum tracks are basically loops that you play from the octatrack? Or you play patterns? Thanks for sharing!
Great video!, i love when you just talk to us and show us how your setup is progressing, can you recommend me some sample packs for my novation circuit? i can't afford paying monthly for samples lately...
Tape delay warping and slap back are my two favourite effects to play live, but I use the Octa for that - personally I dig the unique sounds of the Octa effects and use my scenes and parts to play with those for performance. Less gear is better for a live set IMO 😊
I kinda wanted a Sp 404 until I discovered how EZBOT uses his Octatrack. I watched a few of his vids and bought his template and now I can make my own SP-like effects.
Hey Ricky, you mentioned learning scales was one of the best things you did to create musical sounding tracks. Just wondering, did you use a specific app or UA-cam channel to learn?
I like the 404, but you don't need it. That is a great little set up. I love it. There is probably a good reason not to, but I would love it if you did a set on camera, and maybe put some txt over top, that pointed out a few of the things you are doing. Peace!
Awesome video as always. I've been having some weird latency issues while Live MIDI Recording on my OT, I wonder if I can run that through the Digitakt. Using an ERM Clock as Main Clock Source.
I think its about the pattern setting differences he explained in the video. having the ability to stay in one main structure with samples but switching between the midi patterns. in general, no, octatrack's midi capabilities are way advanced than digitakt's but that doesn't mean you need all of that
Why not use the Octatrack for transitions? You can setup one track to record the master, and mangle it while moving to another pattern and crossfade to it. Lots of setting up to do, though. Happy jamming!
Less is more. Especially with dance music. No need for beat repeat fx imo. I'd say your setup is complete. I know the feeling on stage when you want to tweak around with fx and stuff but most of the time it doesn't help the music. I'd say concentrate on a few changes in your tracks and ín between just have a good time and vibe and/or dance to the music. It took me a while to put my hands off the knobs on stage. I was glued to the machines and couldn't really enjoy the liveset. And i'm still struggling a bit. :) Sometimes i still feel lazy on stage because i don't tweak around all the time. But if the music is good enough (and in your case i'd say it is) then the people will enjoy it and appreciate it even more if you are relaxed and having fun on stage.
I'm sure you're not going to bring your SP. Especially it would be too risky on the first gig. Aside from logistics, the extra knobs and headspace required would be ill advised. But anyway, if/when you do, you could have it so just the Peak runs through the SP. That way those glitch and other effects will be contained to your "free play" section. Thanks for the fun channel!
I would say if you're not reliant on the sp 404 FX as the main "performative" aspect of the set, then bring it. It can't hurt to have a back up set of FX to do an easy transition if something goes wrong. I.e. If my reverb starts feedbacking into some other effect and I'm panicking live trying to figure out how to transition out of the mistake, then I could quickly slap a 404 FX on and transition to the new song. But if you're comfortable with the other gear and don't ever use the over saturated SP 404 FX, then no need to lug it around. Another example, on DJ mixers you have the filter sweep knob that every one uses way too much. So it's not necessary of course, but it is there if you start train wrecking :)
Digitakt can sidechain internally, if everything you wanted to sidechain was inside it, all set!! If you wanted to sidechain anything outside of it, like a bass line sample from the Octatrack, my understanding is you're out of luck without external gear. External compressor could work if the Digi's output was split and one out externally eq'ed to send only low frequencies to the compressor's sidechain input. Then you need a separate out from the Octatrack to send bass lines to the compressor - cue outs could do that, with 'cue mutes track' set to take it out of the Octa's main mix. The other option is the 'fake sidechain' with trigs on the Octatrack, but this does not sound great, and you lose the flexibility of changing drum patterns and having the compressor react automatically. Pretty curious to see what's coming up with the eurorack plan, lots of external processing available there!
Man Ricky using the SP simply for an efx unit it’s like having a time machine just to go back to the 60s to get stoned. Super cool but...Entirely missing the huge creative potential. I think all the Lo Fi beats UA-cam videos with the SP actually is a detriment to the range of this amazing experimental piece of gear.
Btw - The peak transition technique is so spot on! My very first live gig I had no idea what I was gonna do flying by the seat of my underpants. And then I realized I could do these like distorted fuzzy drones throughout my whole set to tie the whole thing together and blend everything. really was a paradigm shift. You could do a whole video on this.
Quick note: I LOVE the Boum. But won’t be using it live after all. I’ll be filming a video on this tiny eurorack setup I have that’ll be my end of chain! It’s sick and I can’t wait to show you.

so, the new official elektron guy huh? congrats! good to have a real house dude doing the demoing :)
Dope, are you using LFO on retrig? How are you glitching the vocal like that, do you have an OT video that covers that? Much respect!
damn this is literally my same set up minus the compressor. love it
Great video!, i love when you just talk to us and show us how your setup is progressing, can you recommend me some sample packs for my novation circuit? i can't afford paying monthly for samples lately...
Tape delay warping and slap back are my two favourite effects to play live, but I use the Octa for that - personally I dig the unique sounds of the Octa effects and use my scenes and parts to play with those for performance. Less gear is better for a live set IMO 😊
Splitting the melody! (: nice!
00:27 Very good, keep it up 🎵🔥
I kinda wanted a Sp 404 until I discovered how EZBOT uses his Octatrack.
Peace!
Been seeing the Octatrac showing up on a lot of channels lately. Did Elektron have a fire sale or something?
I have everything for My Dawless set up, including Peak, MiniNova, Monopoly, sevraul guitar pedals and a looper but have no midi cables.
Excellent video!
Hey, nice shirt! What brand/model is it? (and I like your setup too haha)
Awesome video as always. I've been having some weird latency issues while Live MIDI Recording on my OT, I wonder if I can run that through the Digitakt. Using an ERM Clock as Main Clock Source.
The Roland MX-1 has a 5 fx chain mastering chain to make everything clue at the press of the button…
You could also have the SP404 as a compressor at the end of your chain!
That's cool! 😎 Is Digitakt midi sequencer better than on Octa? Or why Peak isn't sequenced from Octa?
I think its about the pattern setting differences he explained in the video. having the ability to stay in one main structure with samples but switching between the midi patterns. in general, no, octatrack's midi capabilities are way advanced than digitakt's but that doesn't mean you need all of that
Why not use the Octatrack for transitions?
You can setup one track to record the master, and mangle it while moving to another pattern and crossfade to it.
Lots of setting up to do, though.
Happy jamming!
Yesssss this is crunchy
Whats the best way to get isolated vocal samples for house??
LIVE RICKY LETS GOOO
Word from a time traveller, The Elektron Spin is an dj fx unit for programming breakdowns and buildups. Due 2028. Lets see if paradox hits
@ricky tinez how do you compensate for the 1bar delay from OT to DT during pattern changes ??
When did you stopped working for Novation and start working for Elektron?
Love the midi channel trick for peak.
"This is where it gets dope."
Hold up, what was that synth riff.
Hey Ricky! What’s your usual solution to getting things sidechained to the kick in a live Dawless setup? Cheers
You could do a whole video on this.
so you work at Elektron and Novation? Nice.
How does the Digitakt compressor end of chain compare to the boum?
Which do you prefer the sp1200 or s2400?
What filter hardware you recommend for heavy ebm
How many different Octatracks have you owned? You have videos with Mk1, Mk2, and Mk2 Black. Holy moly.
