"I don't know if anybody has been able to rebuild a house using their own tools" is probably the most unique aspect of restoring an historic home. The likelyhood of that unique statement being stated in any other channel is basically nil. Just one of the reasons I so enjoy following Kaleb and Kim's restoration journey.

I thought you guys found one of those pointy iron tops with a metal detector. If not, the missing one may still be on the property in the ground in case that artifact hunter comes back. I would search the grounds for you but I live by San Francisco.

I love the history lessons that keep this channel even more fascinating than it already would be. The arched detail in white over the window really gave the appearance an extra polished edge. Those noodle moldings were something I never knew existed underneath the larger pieces. Interesting. Counting down the days when our Kim will become a Higgins, more importantly, Mrs. Kaleb Higgins. You both are such special human beings.

To reproduce that spear tip for the window grate, I would get a chunk of mild steel plate in the correct dimension and get my angle grinder out with cutting whhels, grinder wheels and flapper wheels and just make one. And then weld it on. And then bust out some hand files for the finishing touthes. I think that that spear point should be great as a beginners black smithing project.

Hi Caleb. For the gaps around the windows - I highly advise you watch Peter Wards YT Channel - he works in England on old Historic Houses hundreds of years old. The best way to seal the gap around the window is to use rolled up Hemp/Oakum pushed in to the gaps and then cover this with Lime Putty (similar to how Shipwrights seal the deck of a Sailing Ship). As you righty said, cement and silicon/caulk should never be used as they will rot the wood.

You've inspired me to write a spooky script about a guy, like you, who starts channeling the original owner, builder during a mansion restoration. It would be like "The Shining, DIY meets Being John Malkovich". When the project finally is complete, so is the possession. It would bring a real contrast between the way men behaved just before the turn of the twentieth century to today, as in, he would try to stop his wife or girlfriend from voting, start growing a handlebar mustache, etc.!

Natural gas hot water radiator heat is probably the lowest cost/benefit option out there right now.
My plumbing guy told me a few years ago that they make gas boilers that are 95% efficient and the size of a tool box!
If the boiler is more than 15 years old, then it would probably be worth checking into replacing it.
Hot water radiator heat is the best!

You do such a great job with the Abatron! I'll be using mine again today on the porch rails now that rain is gone. Love following your progress and I know your home is going to be a masterpiece!

As for the window, find a blacksmith and get the missing piece forged. They could weld it to the existing piece. It would be an easy shape to recreate and there are still plenty of people doing custom ironwork.

I hope when you all complete the lions share of the house that Kaleb will be using his skills as an (ideally) paid historical construction consultant. So much knowledge you have aggregated. And you have the additional skills of virtual engagement and community building as a UA-camr

My plan is to fix other houses in my community free of charge film it and use the ad revenue to survive. I really like the idea that everyone wins in that scenario. I get to do the work i love. The youtube community gets more restoration content and my neighborhood gets more beautiful. It also makes it accessible to those in my community who cant afford this level of care and detail when fixing their homes.

*Spearhead - maybe get the local high sch metal shop kids to make some extras for you... in case others ever fall off or get damaged in the future. This will help the kids learn some history and good learning skills of how they were made in the past... for those kids interested in learning the old ways for any restorations they may end up doing in their future.*

That sepeelie (sp) is really nice looking wood. Never heard of it before. When you first showed it I thought it was mahogany.

Alittle advise for bedding when it's time to open up for ppl . Have each size bed the same color and not all different colors . So queens all white or twins all blue etc 💙. We owned a motel for 12yrs and that's 1 thing I would change because it got so confusing even if they were in separate bins
