Lyrics:
I am just a poor boy, though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance for a pocketful of mumbles, such are promises
All lies and jest, still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest, hmmmm
When I left my home and my family, I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station, runnin' scared, laying low
Seeking out the poorer quarters, where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know
Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie
Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie, la la lie la lie

Fifty years later, their voices open a floodgate of fond memories of those good years when we were young. God Bless You Dear Simon & Art.

You had to say 50 years later ... thanks a lot ... LOL!
Love these two... Their harmony is like nothing earthly... They sounf like a couple of angels when they harmonise. Love them.
I lived near Larry Knechtel's farm, he did the piano arrangement. I worked for him, cutting trees, building fences, planting trees. Wonderful human being, he recorded me in his studio, he was very encouraging. I'm a porfessional musician now, I live in Europe. I'm sad to have lost contact with his family.
A song and lyric I will never forget the first time I heard it at NIU campus back in 1969-70.
*pure poetry. Life in the slow and the fast lane.*
This song makes me cry every time because of same story happens in my life
I was born in late 90s and been listening to them since thn.
It feels like a blessing to know them yet a curse as it makes me sad everytime i listen to them and knowing the fact that such good art is died long ago now and also the fact i wasn't in the 70s to fully celebrate their music, like must have enjoyed and listened to them live.
Cheers if you are listening to this masterpiece in 2023 or later!!
They helped me get thru 68-72. Four Navy years multiple cruises in and to Vietnam.
Art harmonizing is an art unto itself. No better duo
A forgotten art

Their harmonies are transcendent. I cannot imagine what it was like to hear them perform live in their prime. I wonder if they still have it, if their voices are still strong, it would be so beautiful if they reunited for even one night. Wishful thinking.
They did in 2009, and still sounded spectacular.
They do not. I also wish I could’ve seen them in their prime. Amazing. Alas, I wasn’t yet born.

昔よく聞いていた歌

................. LALALALALALALLALALALALAALLLLLYYYYYAAAA
Sounds so familiar in this day and age
Don't we all???
This is so true of 2020 and beyond, "A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest......."
Beautiful rendition of a classic song.
😎
:')
sounds if silance
I am just a poor boy
Though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocket full of mumbles, such are promises
All lies and jests
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest
When I left my home and my family
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station
Running scared,
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go
Looking for the places
Only they would know
Lie la lie, lie la la la lie lie
Lie la lie, lie la la la la lie la la lie
Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers
Just a come-on from the whores
On Seventh Avenue
I do declare
There were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there, le le le le le le le
la lie, lie la la la lie lie
Lie la lie, lie la la la la lie la la lie
And the years are rolling by me
Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone
Going home
Where the New York City winters
Aren't bleeding me
Leading me
Going home
In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of ev'ry glove that laid him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
"I am leaving, I am leaving"
But the fighter still remains, mmm mmm
Lie la…
Why can't a symphony or pops orchestra do this song like the original recording? I know that they can't drum into an elevator shaft but with technology they could duplicate it. It would be awesome to see people playing the unusual instruments like the special harmonica, see the horn and the strings come in.

:D
Some of the lyrics are missing...
it's live ... decades after the original ... some lyrics added from the original ... after all, it was released in 1965 ...
@@user-wx7zl8fn7f No, this performance is from 1969, which is the same year in which it was released.
Not their best.
