Thanks for the demo. I have been trying to find a contractor to fix mysoffits, squirrels have ripped them out but no one wants to do small jobs. I,m pretty good at doing repairs myself For a retired woman and now I’m going to do it.
This is exactly what I was looking for. I recently bought my first house and it doesn’t have any soffit vents on it. Only plywood at around 15 degree angle with 4 vents on each side, front and back. This video made it not seem so hard for someone who has no idea on any sort of remodeling. Thank you!
I have been in a discussion about soffit application and you mentioned leaving a little looseness in the flange connection for expansion contraction . This helps me to make my point on why you should not run nails or screws thru the material anywhere other than the slotted holes provided. Although sometimes it becomes necessary to use a trim nail here and there. The discussion is primarily about starting the soffit from top center of a rake and working down in both directions . Bending the top piece in the center and thus going backwards in one direction. I think its wrong for a few reasons.
I am a first-time-Soffitt installer (DIY). Your instructions were clear and more helpful than other videos I viewed. Next I start vinyl siding. I hope to learn from you again.
Had a bit of hurricane damage here in Florida...12 ft section of fascia was ripped off winds...thank you for the instruction (I subscribed immediately)!!
I have same hurricane damage in SWFL. looks like step one is to remove the existing fascia. I just have random mangled soffits do I need to take a whole section out and start over?
For installing the soffit and the Fascia this video is among the best on UA-cam. I also didn't know you have to use F-Channel for installing the soffit. Great Video, Subscribed!!!
Exactly what I was looking for to make my soffits look uniform! Thanks for walking me through this! The only tricky part I think I'll have is where I have to go high on the ladder! 🙂
I notice you say you cut the soffit short to allow for expansion and contraction which I totally agree is a good idea. Then I noticed you put screws in the valley of your soffit material which doesn't have a slotted hole and you put the screw in tight so that the soffit can't move, the same with the screw you put in the manufactured edge which does have a sotted hole. So my question is should it not be fastened using the slotted hole and maybe make another hole in the valley to allow it to expand and contract??
Thanks. My house had been constructed and they used staples to attach the soffits. Some have pulled loose. Had someone come out and they wanted $750 to fix a few droopy J channels. Your video motivated me to do it myself.
Lee L Thanks my friend. “My way” may not be the gospel, or so to speak, but it’s always worked for me and I’ve never been called back to a job. Thanks again my friend and I hope to see you in future videos
@@theremodelingveteranOut of my whole house soffit I have about 10 ft on the back porch where the soffit was cut maybe a 1/4 in to short and does not hold in the lip of the inner channel to keep it from sagging. Any idea of a easy fix without tearing that 10 ft section out and replacing it with little longer pieces. I don’t want to do that because the other sides are screwed in and are covered with the fascia trim.
This is a great video! I’ve had to rebuild things a handyman did wrong- or finish jobs because the next guy doesn’t show up. From now on I’ll just UA-cam and do it all myself! Thank you for this one- birds are pulling out insulation or nesting inside because my guy just can’t seem to get back for 2 weeks to put it up. I’ll do it myself now that I see how!!
Thank you. Explained very well. Nice a simple and to the point. I am going to do some soffit work with confidence. Please do a video on how to take soffits down without causing damage. Thank you and God bless you also.
Thank you. I am 64 disabled and you wouldn't believe the prices I have been given, so I've decided to do things for myself, and so far, I have saved 5k😅
good video! simple, right to the topic, no big annoying logo introduction, background music at the right ratio, then the content, clear, simple, right to the point. good job, I'm subscribing.
Nelson Lueiza Thank you my friend. We’ve been away for awhile trying to settle into new positions at work. We plan on trying to get a video out this week. Thanks for the support. Take care, and god bless!
Thank you so much for a detailed video. I am not looking to do that. I have no skill in this. I had a contractor come out to diagnose why attic is so hot and he says "6 sections of perforated soffit panels should be cut down, cut openings in wood soffits to clear away insulation blocking air flow and reinstall removed panels". This all sounds greek and latin to me :-) and he is quoting $960, Is this at least in the ballpark. I am not trying to underestimate skills here but don't want to pay double for something that's simple. Your video helped to understand why we need soffit panels (airflow). Ours is a 25+ year old house and generally in a great condition (to provide context), Wondering whether this is normal or unusual in a old house that they did not vent the attic properly.
Those is how you do a video. Give the relevant info and speed up the rest. Thanks, I think I need to use this method instead of what I was going to do. Much easier!
So the numbnuts who built my detached garage a few years ago used non-vented soffit. We just bought the place in May this year so I'm going around fixing all the bad work they did. I'm getting ready to finish off the inside of the garage, and I need gutters, etc. Do I need to take off the facia to replace the solid vinyl crap with ventilated soffit, or can I just pop it out and pop in new pieces? i definitely had air flow issues in the garage over the summer, and it got really hot in there- so the roof vent was not even getting any air to help flush out the heat. Hoping insulating, and correcting this issue will help with the temperature in there next summer- along with not making my mini-split work so hard to cool the space after I get that installed. Thank you for your service to our country, and a belated Veteran's day to you!
I am putting soffit and siding on a large workshed to match my home. The Hight is 13.5 feet. I have a problem with boring bees and wasps that I can't reach, so I will probably go with a solid soffit to keep them out.. But can i put up the soffit first before putting on my siding? Thanks! I enjoyed your video.
It would have been nice to see a picture of the screws you used. Definitely looked easy enough. However it didn't show how to cut the facia if your existing board is a 2x4 instead of a 2x6.
Nails would be much more cost effective and regardless of what type of fastener you use it shouldn't be snugged. That negates the whole expansion and contraction you spoke of. Also, your fascia trim has nothing securing it at the top. Normally this would be tucked under drip edge which I get you don't have due to the metal roof but the VSI recommends using utility trim or, if you have to, face nail it. Lastly, NEVER should you put your screws (should be trim nails) through the fascia at any other point than the v-groove of the soffit panel. You put them smack dab in the center of the vented section which compromised its integrity and will cause it to fail faster, not to mention looks bad. It's cool that you're making videos to help people but you are doing it wrong. That isn't just my opinion that is according to the Vinyl Siding Institute who is kind of an authority on the subject.
The sides of my house were done in soffit; it's not meant to shingle water like siding does. I have Masonite soffits and the support at the top of the wall is all termite eaten so I'm looking at replacing all of it. I like the vented. I'm going to put new siding on because I need to replace the Masonite lap board on the walls with OSB.
I seen the facia nailed on the front end where the gutters will overlay on top of. Would this be visually more better since it’s hidden or you recommend from bottom like that
Wow. 3 screws in a 12 inch panel is WAY overkill even if you live in a really windy area. Not to mention snugging each screw will NOT allow for expansion despite his earlier comment.
Yeah I always put 2 in each panel.. and leave the soffit joints free UNTIL I screw the fascia on. Then I put a screw where each soffit joint is. But hey, to each their own
What kind of blade do I need to use, I tried to use my chopsaw and it seemed to have a blade with quite a few teeth but it chipped up the ends of the siding and didn’t make a great cut? Any suggestion on blades would be appreciated? Thanks
I had white aluminum finishing nails on hand but I used steel fascia since I have a metal roof. You don’t wanna mix aluminum products with steel products because galvanic corrosion will cause the metal to rust when using dissimilar metals. Thus’ I used the white screws I had on hand.
So I wanted to know why not use a whole piece without cutting it... I have about a 13.5 inch gap on my front and I was thinking of using just a whole piece to cover it up... Do I have to cut it in a bunch of small pieces?
Can't find any videos on how to remove soffit. Previous home owner didn't use vented soffit. So want to remove n replace. Any neat way of doing it ? Thanx
Why is it so important to install the fasteners into the 1" expansion slots and to hold the soffit back 1/4" from the f channel for that same purpose only to then install the two the screws into the two valleys without first installing/creating slots for the screws to ride in? Similarly, why install the screws so tightly - why not leave some room for the soffit to slide in and out with contraction if the goal is to allow movement? Or is it that across that 11 1/4" there won't be enough expansion to worry about?
Was thinking the same, he must not be in an area that gets a lot of wind, his install isn’t exactly how you should do it, you need to use the holes on the flange...
I never put a screw on the ends either, just in the slots and dont tighten them all way the down. However, i have a 1x4 on edge agaibst the house that i can get a 2nd screw into.
Can you advise me? I think rats are pushing up and under somehow. Is there anything i can put over the side attacked to my brick exterior to block anything from entering or tearing it open
Thank you for the video. It helped me see exactly how to do it. I would have just installed the whole length as one piece going sideways. But now i know. Lol

Just rip them out if they're falling apart and make sure there's clear path for air to flow into attic. Nothing neat about demo work.
Ok dumb question but do you have to cut them into smaller parts or can you just cut it to length and do it all in one?
That's probably a frequently asked question. By cutting them, it works for any width needed, and they interlock with each other.
