My husband had a Sun Quon deck for a while. The flavor was hilarious. He'd play Colossal Whale, and now the Whale was on a horse. Love underplayed commanders. I play Reveka, and she had around 30 decks on EDHREC last I checked
My LGS owner has a Sun Quan deck. He uses it as a "welcome to commander" deck for new players to barrow. Just unblockable artifact voltron with lots of control. Very simple for new players while hitting players with higher level decks in a way they can struggle to deal with.
That seems like a good idea though I think just having a precon laying around is good enough now the pre-cons of been getting really good lately, and the most new players have slightly upgraded precons. I bought the green white human one it’s pretty nuts straight out of the box.
I have a sun quan deck as well lol. Equips and control magic. One of my fun ways to screw with my mates is using mind over matter with willbreaker, taking control of their creatures and giving them horsemanship lol.
One way I've stopped myself from constantly updating decks is picking a specific theme for each deck. Picking a tribe, a specific strategy, plane, or even an era of magic for each deck stops me from spending thousands every year updating them.
Do you know what I love most about this video? That I was just thinking to myself to make some mono-coloured decks to better learn the colour pie. This gives me some particular commanders to build.
I was gonna build a Syr Elenora deck once but then changed it to Callaphae, Beloved by the sea and then that changed to Charix the Raging Isle. So many good blue Voltron commanders were released so close together and I feel like that might be a reason why she kinda got lost in the shuffle.
I've built both Sun Quan and Medomai before, but have since taken them apart. My current underplayed commander is Kogla, the Titan Ape, who was so excited that Liquimetal Torque came out.
Kokusho has only 133 decks. He got some attention when the death rule changed, but when I built my Kokusho deck a year or so back there were only 44 decks with him in the CZ (while he is in almost 13K decks in the 99). It's a ton of fun, and pretty darn strong as well. My combos are Krrik + Chainer + [sac outlet] + [Kokusho or Gary] or Bolas's Citadel + [Sensei's Top or Necropotence] or Su-Chi + Nim Deathmantle + [sac outlet] or Just winning with Kokusho deaths, with value from something like Lifeline + [sac outlet] for triggers on every turn. Kokusho is also a 5/5 flier so if one person is at higher life total I will attack them to keep it down closer to everyone elses. Kokusho likes to drain everyone at about the same time. also, it's fun to abuse the legend rule with Blade of Selves.
I used to have a Whisper, Blood Liturgist deck, and it was such a fun deck. Being able to instant-speed reanimate is really powerful. Besides the capacity for combo-ing with Thornbite Staff and something like a Desecrated Tomb. I ended up dismantling it when Syr Konrad was released (beacuse I am one of those people that doesn't want to have two deck of the same color combination), but I still want to build it again.
One added piece of spice: Stormtide Leviathan. Makes it so that only creatures with flying or island walk can attack or block. It can shut down a lot of annoying token blockers or allow you to swing without fear of crack-back for a turn or two
@@Crow_Saw Stormtide Leviathan is such a bruiser. Hullbreaker Horror isn't the first time Blue just shuts things down for its opponents to close out a game
syr elenora might be competing in the mono-blue voltron space with nezahal - which last i checked (admittedly a while back) had around 190ish decks. now not to take anything away from syr elenora... but the prospect of card draw stapled onto a 7/7 elder dinosaur body that /also/ protects itself, one that had a reprint a while back in commander legends... i can see why her numbers are a bit lower than one might expect
Ishai & Ich-Tekik -- splicer tribal. This is my new favorite deck since Commander Legends came out, and this partner pairing only has like 48 decks to its name. I've packed in token doubling strategies and leaning hard into treasure/clue/food as a way to power up my golem army.
I think the fact that you can't run red creatures with Balthor despite the fact his ability specifies black AND red creatures might throw people off. Also you REALLY want to be running Leyline of the Void effects because it affects ANY player with black and/or red creatures in their graveyard.
My main deck is actually Grismold the Dreadsower. Sure, he's got way more decks than any commanders in this vid, but he still has under 800.... That's really sad. Really cool effects, and can actually be used as a pretty decent combat damage commander if you build the deck right. (he also breaks Animation Module, so +1000 points for me lol)
Yeeeesss, I have a marton Stromgald deck and it’s literally so fun. I’ve always thought he was severely underrated not even as a commander but just even in the 99 of any deck that has red in its colors and wants a lot of creatures, he’s like a more fair craterhoof behemoth (my deck was even submitted onto his EDHREC page)
I run him in Gwyn, and while he's certainly got power, he's also very fragile. 4 Mana for a 1/1 and you gotta turn him sideways and THEN you get upside.
@@ronnielaw9318 he is definitely fragile, but that’s why I like him, if he’s your commander you have to do some tricky build arounds for that and if he’s in the 99 he’s not totally overpowered. He is a major glass cannon, when it doesn’t work it’s not overly impressive but when it does work, oh boy it works.
Thank you for the nostalgia. I ran Kurkesh when he first came out and enjoyed the deck for years. My favorite play was hooking up a prototype portal with a caged sun and had vedalkin orrey out. I had 4 copies of caged sun out and tapped enough to have a red sun zenith take out a player who would have taken out the entire table with one attack. Sadly, I drew lands for the rest of the game.
My friend is one of 86 people with a Linvala, Shield of Sea Gate deck. He plays it as Azorius angel tribal, and it has a subtheme of using board wipes to clear the board and strike in for the kill by making them one-sided with Linvala.
It was really cool to see a mention of Medomai, the Ageless. I have a Medomai deck, and have never seen another being played. Great tech mentioned for the deck that I hadn’t thought of. Flying tribal definitely tends to surprise people, but add in Helm of the Host? That’s seriously ridiculous!
My favorite underplayed is Seton, Krosan Protector. Druid tribal with Gilt-Leaf Archdruid. tons of low level dudes, Beast Whisperer etc effects. Use Gilt Leaf to steal your opponents lands. Then animate the lands and kill them with their own lands. Use untap effects like Vitality to do more than just once a turn
Patron of the Orochi is criminally underplayed when it can essentially be a seedborne muse in the command zone. Having played with the deck for a while you'd be surprised how quickly it can be cast via the use of snakes/changelings at the endstep of the player before you (My average is turn 4/5, but I once managed it turn 3 via some elves and lotus cobra!). Slam some instant speed shenanigans via things such as Yeva/Vivien or Horizon stone/Omnath to collect insane amounts of mana for X spells. My personal favourite include is sprout swarm, with the untap helping alongside convoke to create an army from just 1 card. The deck can just explode with value, and 66 decks on EDHREC is just criminal!
I run Ghost Council of Orzhova (only 53 decks on EDHREC) as commander since before the time of official Commander products. I love to tinker with it. It is a jack of all trades - deck. Ghost Council is hard to kill, it also is a sacrifice outlet and can trigger lifegain-lifeloss abilities. The deck does aristocrats, mass removal, tokens, reanimator...even soft locks. Last time I played it, my cousin asked my: "What does the deck do?" My answer: "Yes" It doesn't win often, but is always solid :D
Pest infestation is a legit token generator. This is the kind of interaction that I look for. If you are playing a token deck, this makes X - 1 tokens which is almost as good as it gets for mana efficiency and then to destroy permanents on top of that... this card get's the chef's kiss. Aura shards is literally the only artifact and enchantment destruction card that I'd prefer over this one in a token strategy... and let's be real... its aura shards...
You need a different commander, but Yore-Tiller Nephilim, Medomai, and lets say Fanatical Devotion. Attack with Nephilim, put Medomai into play tapped and attacking, get extra turn, sac Medomai to Devotion, repeat.
Nice call on Pest Infestation. I have been running it in Chatterfang, and it is awesome. I even found an unintentional infinite life synergy with it when I had an Ashnod’s Altar and Pitiless Plunderer in play. (Use it to destroy your own infinite treasure tokens.). The card is definitely underplayed . I am curious to see if it goes up in value now that the cat is out of the bag.
107 decks, rank # 726 Kazarov, Sengir Pureblood Brewed it with the purpose of damaging many of my opponent's creatures (This includes Pestilent Spirit and some field peppering instants and sorceries), with a little bit of sneaky deathtouch (Gorgon Flail, Gorgon's Head, Void Beckoner, and possibly more), a pinch of enrage (Silverclad Ferocidons), and weird old cards (Backlash and Traitor's Roar).
For hand size shenanigans you can also try out Masumaro in mono green. Having access to big power payoffs like rishkar's expertise and overwhelming stampede is crazy strong.
Some underplayed commanders (fewer than 200 decks on EDHrec) that I've had fun with... Barrin, Master Wizard (35 decks on EDHrec): I believe that this is the only commander with an activated ability that acts as a sac outlet for any permanent, no restrictions. Also, bouncing creatures can be exploited for all sorts of silly loops. This is a reasonably strong mono-blue commander that is unique in what it enables, and yet it doesn't even break the double-digits. For shame. Pashalik Mons (118 decks on EDHrec): Krenko 1.0 is the best Goblin Tribal commander. I get it. But mono-red aristocrats style shenanigans with a goblin subtheme can be fun and potent. Ramses Overdark (44 decks on EDHrec): I've done this beautifully illustrated commander a few different ways and it's a blast to play. Dead Man's Chest is one of my favorite cards for this commander. I realize that Ramses Overdark has climbed in secondary market price, but still. Erebos, Bleak-Hearted (125 decks on EDHrec): I just really like sacrificing all my stuff, OK?
My favorite underrated commander is sekkuhar deathspeaker. I used to have a wither deck with the jund elementals from shadowmore. I took it apart when windgrace came out and made it jus lands with gitrog an omnath. With korvold i put sekkukar on the backburner but with harmonic prodigy imma build jund shamans. This deck got so interesting jus from one card like my rage forger triggers twice on etb an attack, eternal witness an ignoble heirarch trigger twice sekkukars death trigger goes twice.
I've played prototype portal in my Sydri build for a while. Its indeed very powerful, but it also is extremely painful to get blown out on, so it eventually got cut. Never thought of it as a land duplicator though. That has potential.
You guys should do more of this kind of research of looking for the pontential of unusual Commanders. I have also looked at both Syr Elenora vs Lu Xun they are intressing but on two points, one have evasion and the other have lite protection and both can draw you at least 1 card per turn without help. I’m more into Elenora because her power-increase ability is very much ”Knowledge is Power” in blues Ideology, but it’s weird seeing it on a Legendary Creature.
Aeve might not get extra tokens from her storm, but her page had half a dozen other oozes that make tokens, in addition to Chatterstorm, Timeless Witness, Ooze flux, Gutter Grime, and something I'm sure I missed.
I love building the obscure old commanders. My current favourite is Shauku, endbringer but I also like Taigam sidsi's hand not checked the numbers but I can't imagine Taigam is very high.
The best part of puns is they are memetic, the more you make puns the more people close to you make puns and the more pun behavior is normalized, soon puns will spread *around the globe*
I have a captain Ripley Vance deck mostly built it as a challenge thinking it was going to be a weaker deck but I was pleasantly surprised by how potent Ripley can be I based the deck more around artifacts and equipment ( cheap equipment and artifacts to help get her ability to trigger ) and some quick cantriping cards and a ton of wheels
Medomai the Ageless? Run Medomia in Azor, particularly with things that can blink Azor. Not only will they not see him coming, they won't be able to DO anything about it either^^ For best effect blink Azor on your last extra turn stay unable to do anything about it.
There should be an implicit rule that states: if the art shows the creature ridding a horse, that creature should be able to block horsemanship (some sort of horsemanship-reach).
For Rhonas the Indomitable why not include Ravenous Slime? Why merely remove when you can exile? Would also suggest throwing Whippoorwill in as a backup for Ravenous Slime. In addition try Luring Licid instead of Lure. Luring Licid IS a creature which Green is VERY good at being able to tutor for.
If Medomai is your commander, maybe you could run something like a darksteel mutation and enchantment sac outlet to allow it to attack at least once more during extra turns.
I have Marton Stromgald in my Queen Marchesa deck as a finisher. I also have Varchild and his War-Riders to give my opponents (especially those without sac outlets) creatures. As far as Parallel Lives goes, I think it suffers from not been reprinted with the up to date oracle text. When you read “If an effect would put one or more tokens on the battlefield…” that sounds like it should work, where “…would create one or more tokens” that signals a very specific action. It’s like looking at a card and putting it into your hand vs “draw” on cards or when creatures “attack” vs coming into play attacking.
Korona False God. Way underplayed. 1st: it's 5 color and 5 color decks are way fun and flexible. Add effects where you cant be attacked (at least by her) and watch the fun. :)
Does anyone know how Medomai the Ageless works with Sakashima the Impostor? Sakashima the Impostor doesn't copy the name of the target, so with the wording on the card can it just infinitely attack or does that not work the way I think it does?
Good question! Whenever a card names itself, it's just a way of saying "this object right here". So Sakashima will copy Medomai, keep its own name, but it will also say "[This card] can't attack on extra turns." (A similar thing can happen in Experiment Kraj decks, where Kraj gaining the ability of a Horseshoe Crab still allows the Kraj to untap itself.) For exact rules, this one seems to cover it: 201.4. Text that refers to the object it’s on by name means just that particular object and not any other objects with that name, regardless of any name changes caused by game effects.
I would also like to challenge the stats on a card similar to the aeve interaction. It's flayer of the hatebound in chainer, nightmare adept it's in 47% of decks. It doesn't work with chainers ability because casting comes off the stack. I do understand that black has many ways to recur creatures directly from the graveyard to the battlefield & you won't always have your commander out but you won't always have a reanimate spell either. I just felt that it underperformed due to it working half of the time. So please play a different card y'all 😊
OK but Patron of the Orochi tho. Sure it's 7 mana but it's in mono-G so that doesn't matter especially since it untaps all your forests and green creatures that you used to pay for it. And like a once per turn untap of all your mana and creatures is so so nice since its just double mana and/or pseudo-vigilance in G
People see the XX in Pest Infestation's cost and misevaluate it, since XX feels like a lot. But imagine if it was worded: "XG - X must be an equal number. Destroy an amount of artifacts or enchantments equal to half of X. Create X pests." and it'd seem amazing, and it is the exact same effect!
Syr Elenora might be more special if Alrund didn't exist, but Alrund doesn't benefit from a conjurer's closet. I suppose it just comes down to the specifics of what either deck wants to do.
This episode: Challenge the stats commander edition.

Medomai the Ageless? Run Medomia in Azor, particularly with things that can blink Azor. Not only will they not see him coming, they won't be able to DO anything about it either^^ For best effect blink Azor on your last extra turn stay unable to do anything about it.
I'm more of a Voltron/aggro type of player but I'm intrigued by Kurkesh! Where can I see a game with that commander? 😍
There should be an implicit rule that states: if the art shows the creature ridding a horse, that creature should be able to block horsemanship (some sort of horsemanship-reach).
The obvious answer to Chainer vs Balthor is to run Chainer IN Balthor... and Conspiracy so you can make your creatures NOT minions.^^
OMG 😱 The formats puns at the end are everything!😂😂😂
Wow Linvala + Gift is pretty nasty. Now im debating on building this or just adding this into Raff, Ship's Captain.
It's FRIDAY!!!
If Medomai is your commander, maybe you could run something like a darksteel mutation and enchantment sac outlet to allow it to attack at least once more during extra turns.
Linvala is pretty fun lol, I went along the ways control tokens.
I'm currently building Syr Elenora and i gotta say it's pretty fun the kind of jank she can pull off
If you had Extended the format puns any further, it might have started a Brawl.
So Sakashima will copy Medomai, keep its own name, but it will also say "[This card] can't attack on extra turns." (A similar thing can happen in Experiment Kraj decks, where Kraj gaining the ability of a Horseshoe Crab still allows the Kraj to untap itself.)
For exact rules, this one seems to cover it:
201.4. Text that refers to the object it’s on by name means just that particular object and not any other objects with that name, regardless of any name changes caused by game effects.
@@EDHRECast Alright, thanks so much :)
If you play medomai at a certain command zone game show that is not game knights would it just never be able to attack?
I would also like to challenge the stats on a card similar to the aeve interaction. It's flayer of the hatebound in chainer, nightmare adept it's in 47% of decks. It doesn't work with chainers ability because casting comes off the stack. I do understand that black has many ways to recur creatures directly from the graveyard to the battlefield & you won't always have your commander out but you won't always have a reanimate spell either. I just felt that it underperformed due to it working half of the time. So please play a different card y'all 😊
Olivia Voldaren is a pretty fun, but underplayed commander. Don't go vampire tribal, but instead build it around stealing creatures and equipment.
You guys seem so cool wish in life magic was a thing! Wish I could play a game with you guys!!!
Alexi Zephyr Mage! It's got to be on the show!
Never seen him and I want a kurkesh deck like now. I’ve wanted charge counter deck for a long time, but never wanted an Atraxa deck
14:10 as someone who loves RoT3K, I have a Mono red Lu Bu Voltron deck, and am considering doing Cao cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Quan 😂
My boy balthoooor
Something something block constructed.. I can't even.
As someone who has (and loves) a Jugan, the Rising Star deck (4 decks on EDHRec) I’m excited for this episode! Jugan probably won’t get any love tho
Not that he deserves it, but still
I want to challenge the card Contempt. It should be played more in any blue deck.
Who is Mathis and why is he for blockers?
Literally everybody: ...?
Post Malone: Sun Quan 🙌
Nikara / Yannik only have 413 decks to their names, that’s crazy low for those very good and fun partners
Syr Elenora might be more special if Alrund didn't exist, but Alrund doesn't benefit from a conjurer's closet. I suppose it just comes down to the specifics of what either deck wants to do.
Funny thing is, Alrund only has 63 decks, himself.
Horses need more love !
Kurkesh is on of my Fleshwrither targets in Golos! Gotta bring the populist degeneracy to the hipster episode!
If Slobad isn't mentioned in this cast, I will literally consume my entire leg.
I don't use kurkesh as commander but he really perform good in my toggo/ikra shidic that is a deathtouch Stone killer
I think that part with all the format puns may have been a bit Extended.
Patron of the moon is a cool deck imo
Blind Seer 100% Such a versatile commander can voltron or play control or play down right dirty commander
I put kerkesh In my planewalker chainveil deck
Medomai + Ilharg
I thought of building Medomai, but then I saw Vesuvan Shapeshifter, and that combo kinda made me very meh on it
