A guy swung at me with his suited up commander for lethal commander damage. I fogged and on my turn, played "Reins of Power" and killed them with their own commander.
You were looking for this: Mirror Strike: All combat damage that would be dealt to you this turn by target unblocked creature is dealt to its controller instead.
RE monarch: I have a monarch subtheme in my lathril deck (queen lathril, long may she reign!!) and it makes it SO fun. nice little spice for an elf deck
That's some really good, fun flavor. I love that. I pulled a Queen Marchesa from mystery boosters, so I just went all out and put every mardu monarch card in a deck.
Brewing and playing sub optimal decks with loads of flavour, creativity and personality feels so much more rewarding to eventually win with. Winning games on easy mode is never going to give the same rush, nor will it show of as much skill and boldness. In my humble opinion this concept holds true in cedh aswell when a player is able to steal a win piloting a underdog commander using a quirky combo. It is simply more badass.
24:25 I still remember a Mana Tithe from three years ago. I tapped out to cast my Commander. There was no blue at the table. I was confident, almost cocky. That put me in my place...
I hadn't even considered that! I think the biggest thing about it is that it says "each creature in play". That means your "Alpha Changeling" would have +2/+2 for each other creature on the entire battlefield.
One of my most memorable and favorite games of magic I ever played was losing to someone playing atemsis, in a game of limited of all formats, you’ve just got to tip your hat to them
Many people have suggested to me to add a Purphoros or an Anger to my Krenko deck to make it more powerful. I always look at them with a confused gaze and have to explain to them that I simply can't, because they aren't goblins and everything in that deck is a goblin
Really appreciate this video right now. I think I've crossed that threshold from casual deckbuilding into optimized this year, and trying to level-set what experience I want from EDH. Opting for cards that present challenges to opponents (or myself even), without blanket shutting them down/out--thanks for putting words to that, fellas. It's been a nebulous idea I'd been working back towards.
on the note of "Price of Glory" I've been hosed by a similar effect, "War's Toll" which says "whenever an opponent taps a land for mana, tap all lands that player controls". I was playing an Esper flash deck and from that point on in the game I had to think very very hard about when it was appropriate to use interaction. Feels ruthless to play against if you've got a ton of instant speed stuff, but it was also one of the sweatiest games I can remember playing. 10/10 would recommend either of these cards.
Arachnogenesis is a very cool fog. You often need some help though with those creatures to win in follow up. Inkshield however is probably up there with Cyclonic Rift for the record on most unearned wins. It just has that “Oh you don’t have a counter spell ? I win” quality to it.
My favorite thing to see is budget or more synergistic card replacing a format staple. Example: Frontier Siege instead of Smothering Tithe in Enchantress decks. It's not even about the budget; I just like seeing new (new to the table) cards.
In all my non-green decks that run white I play Path of Exile and I’ve honestly used it more as a ramp spell lately than a removal spell. Almost like a sakura tribe elder. Especially if I’m in a deck that makes tokens…. Oh boy! Heck one time i put it under an isocron scepter and just used it on my tokens to ramp then had it for removal later. *Side-note: this won’t work for Dana as he runs no basic lands.
I am finding Keen Dualist is an especially fun card (not to mention actually being good in Rakdos Lord of Riots). It never gets boring humming the cowboy showdown song when you both flip over the top card. It’s interactions like that which make commander fun.
I've built Thantis a while ago, and I tune it all the time because it's such a versatile and open commander. A card I can't wait to finally cast there is Hellish Rebuke. I imagine an opponent being finally able to punch through my vigilant defenses to only see me cast Rebuke. This will be so hilarious.
30:03 putting alpha strike on a creature with changling (it’s every creature type) is really funny since all creatures in play share a creature type with it
I like seeing archtypes that are rare...like grixis zombies or dimir elves.... or I love playing against a mana flare affect...you know things are gonna get nutty fast.
I do believe I found a card Dana might enjoy. Its targeted land destruction, its repeatable, AND its suitably obscure. Its been reprinted a couple times but it goes all the way back to Alpha. Demonic Hordes: 5/5 Summon Demon Tap to destroy 1 land Upkeep 3B or Hordes becomes tapped and your opponent gets to destroy a land of their choice Admittedly not a lot of homes it would go in with the mana cost, but I think it would do well in a big mana black deck. Maybe Rakdos not that I think about it since red also gets a couple nice extra mana enchantments.
I play alpha status in my chatterfang and koma decks. That card wins me games all the time. Chatterfang is often in the 30s to 40s and with forestwalk it kills quite easily.
What an interesting video considering how I’ve felt like wotc has gone more and more into the direction of cards being designed to make the users feel great to play the cards and doesn’t care how it makes other feels. Oppostion agent and Hullbreacher feel especially indicative of that toxic design ethos.
I've won so many games with Inkshield in my Orah deck. It's a superb card. Just today I won 2 out of 4 games I played by holding up Inkshield mana for the opportune moment. One of the games I actually had no business winning, the other one it was the deciding factor of a game where both me and my last opponent had a very strong board. A fantastic card, and I love all cards like it (Comeuppance, Selfless Squire etc.) Fogs in general are underplayed (Dawn Charm anyone?!)
Academy manufactor is better in a Jinnie Fay deck. (Here's my favorite farfetched combo) your "Create three food tokens" from Giant Opportunity becomes "Create nine 2/2 Green Cat tokens with haste." Now that's value~
One thing I love doing with my Bruna deck that seems to receive a "wtf do we do?" reaction is just suiting up my opponents creatures with auras and male them scary. Vow or goad-aura, extra power and hexproof. With some politics, the game turns into a "who's the threat?"
When I started playing magic, back in Tempest, Respite was how I won a lot of games. I still put it in every green deck, even though there are a lot better fogs out there, just out of nostalgia.
My friend did this: Turn 1: colossal hammer Turb 2: master work of ingenuity Turn 3: arden Other friend casts zealous conscripts and kills friend 1 with own commander
I played in a game last night and where Possibility Storm was played. Even though it completely destroyed my game it made the game unpredictable, which gave the game a whole different level of fun. I need to find some one who can make me a proxy of Possibility Storm with Forrest Gump on a bench eating a box of chocolates for the art.
I think the coolest thing I've found in edh is soulgorger orgg with Greven predator captain. Just pray your opponent doesn't have a bolt lmao if your feeling extra spicy get a sanguine bond in the mix
My new favorite card is Scroll of Fate in my Aminatou flicker deck… drop a big creature on the end step and flicker it during my main… FREE ANGEL OF DESPAIR! 👍🏼👍🏼
Loved this episode and topic. Nice to deviate from the conversation of efficiency. I want play the synergies and the players at the table more than having a deck play me.
Alpha Status is so sweet in Lathril, the golgari elf commander.. It is insane in that deck too.. I love the rakdos charm against token deck as nice play. Duelist Heritage offer such a nice sweet political tool. Warping Wail is a nice "counterspell" sometimes that caught people off. Liquimetal Torque is so cool. It is easily one of my new favorite card
@@danacoleman4007 i think the problem would be aggressive creature deck going first would take it and get the advantage of first and monarch early on. I think scry 1 on turn 0 would be the most balanced for last place. It’s something but not enough to change the game.
I feel like Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist and Glare of Subdual don’t go well together. For the most part Mirri is a voltron commander that you want tapped. Tapped her with Are of Subdual means she won’t get to attack which is something a Voltron deck never wants and you don’t want to give her Vigilance for this 1 card in the 99.
I personally do disagree with the challenge the stats about Vrondiss. While Atarka is a very valid point, the Scourge however is part of a combo, same with Dragon Tempest (ignore the in this deck useless Haste part of the card). You just need to give Vrondiss indestructable with one of the many different effects (from straight up Indestrutable to +1+1 counter spam from cards like Death's Presence) available, and if you get a single damage on Vrondiss you can loop Dragon Spirits infinitely. Add any payoff to that, from Impact Tremor to Warstorm Surge, Terror of the Peaks or whatever ETB or dies trigger you want, and you probably won the game. Sure, its not a sleek 2 card combo, but depending on your deck you want to do stuff like anyways and adding a few ways to reach an infinite combo is a great way to get out of a stalled game.
Easiest way I can think of to kill someone with their own commander, with commander damage, would be some variation on Goad > Pump THEIR commander > Block with Brash Taunter. Target them w/ Brash Taunter's static. I'm pretty sure that counts as commander damage.
@@selkokieli843 I suppose there's always the direct approach, simply gain control of their commander... and then bludgeon em with it. Easy enough in blue and red and doable in black with a certain planeswalker^^

EDHREC should also have a suger list.
This a brilliant idea indeed
This would be awesome.
Such a good idea
I've been yelling at them in Twitch Chat for months now!
sugar list?
I love seeing Warping Wail cast, especially when countering a sorcery. Nobody expects the Warping Wail.
I have won a game because I had top decked warping wail and my opponent tried to flash speed board wipe. No one expects the colorless counter spell!

I’ve had the rakdos charm kill, but that’s gotta be awesome!
I did the charm on the Craterhoof player -but was 3 dmg short :S

I just ordered a copy for my Morphon deck as a single off voltron win condition :)
