- A few years ago, we took the decision to move to the Scottish Highlands to spend more time working together and more time on our wildlife and landscape photography. We have now finally bought a house on the west coast of Scotland near Torridon, and not far from the Isle of Skye. In this video we discuss our reasons for moving to Scotland, explain where we have moved to and why we chose to move here, and what our plans are for work, landscape and wildlife photography, and our aims for the channel over the next few months.

This is great news and I am very happy for you both. Your new location is not too far from civilisation yet remote enough to provide you both with a variety of wildlife and landscape opportunities ! The smiles on your faces will widen in the months to come. Looking forward to hearing of your accommodation and was wondering if you could cope with a couple of border collies(who are quite happy to sleep in the boot ! We return to Strathcanaird are once again this September for another wander around Assynt and up to Durness. Possible pass near to en route through Torridon on way back home via Shieldag. So happy that those stressful long hours are behind you. Settle in, deep breaths ....and relax !😄

I'm also an escapee from academia (partially, still teaching at a university, but no more research). It is always interesting to see how different people manage to break that chain. Since Scotland is definitely on my list of places to go, maybe I will have an opportunity to visit your lodge one of these days.

The funding landscape has been getting steadily more uncertain and I've been working through various options, but the need to find somewhere to settle down and call home won out in the end! I can see wonderful adventures ahead, will eagerly await your progress, I know the area fairly well, I am back in Skye in October after Covid and Fuel shortages curtailed my two previous trips and at 72 years old you never know how many trips you've got left, all the time I am fit I'll be up every year, it's a long way from Kent but worth all the effort, Very Best Wishes to you Both, Colin.

My wife and I are coming to the Lake District in June 2022 spending some time with Chris Sale, and then going up to Scotland (Glencoe, Skye, the NC500 locations and then onto Edinburgh before heading back to Canada. Congratulations on the new life journey. A good friend of mine from Uni where we studied Astrophysics continued in academia getting his PhD and struggled for many years to maintain a position let alone a decent income so I can understand your intention to move away from that area. I jumped ship and ended up working in software development, which can also be stressful - landscape photography is my escape.

I did/do love working in research, it's just that the constant uncertainty with funding was becoming incompatible with our desire to settle down. It feels good to finally start building something more permanent in a place that we love! S.

Hi Sam and Hannah I reckon you've made a great move, the photo opportunities are going to be fantastic. I was fortunate to ride the NC500 a couple of years ago on a motorcycle and hope to return again maybe later this year or next. It's difficult to make plans at the moment.
The only negative is that tiny flying creature the dreaded midge:)

Hi Sandy, yes the midges certainly cause problems around here! At least for a few months per year! Mind you, it's gorgeous here at the moment, doesn't feel like March at all (and no 'flying teeth' yet either!). I hope that you are able to make it up here again soon. Actually, I'm planning to try a bit of bushcraft up here as well at some point (planning to have a couple of nights in the woods later in the year!). Sam.

It's quite a change of scenery from Oxfordshire but we have absolutely no regrets at all, it's been such a move for the better and we're absolutely loving it up here! S

I think you should get some other people to base tours out of your accommodation for a while. It should get you some early periods of high occupancy, and you will get a certain reputation. Kim Grant would be a good start, she too is in Scotland.

I moved here from America (Colorado) because my husband is Scottish and we have always wanted to live closer to the west coast. However I fear I still haven’t grown accustomed to the midges 😭😅 maybe someday. I like to spend every second of a sunny day outside painting so it’s a struggle on the west coast. Moray (where we live) has a quiet country feeling without the midges (mostly) but my heart aches for the west. So for now I’m trying to embrace the interesting coast here and the nearby Cairngorms while we are here.

Hi Sarah, I'm not sure if anyone ever actually becomes accustomed to the midges unfortunately! 😆 Fortunately photographs are a bit quicker than paintings so I have been able to take the 'smash and grab' approach in the past, but it can be a struggle (I had an awful experience with them by Loch Maree last autumn)! You are definitely a bit safer over on the east coast though! Just subbed to your channel by the way, I will look forward to seeing your work! S

A van would be nice to travel and sleep in but I think they’d still find their way in 😱 oh well..we find ways to deal with them in exchange for the beauty

Senior Daughter has a degree in medical biophysics and instrumentation, from Swinburne University in Melbourne. She worked part time at the Mental Health Research Institute, part of the University of Melbourne, for a while. The lead got his PhD, the money was spent so she was looking for a job. It was data entry at and insurance company. She did well, got poached from by Victorian branch by head office and now is an acknowledge expert in reinsurance. She changed employer once, still in Melbourne, the decided she should move to Perth. Her job came with her, she works from home. In theory she's supposed to spend a day a week in the Perth office, hasn't happened this year.
I would love to move to the Scottish highlands, unfortunately my wife doesn’t ! Loved the video. Best wishes

Hi Alan. Thank you for your well wishes. I think I am relatively restrained in pet ownership, just having two rabbits. I was tempted to steal the practice cat from my last job (I was very fond of her) but she has a pretty good life where she is so that was not really a serious prospect. Do bees count as pets? I have a hive and I really enjoy looking after them (whilst at the same time being slightly intimidated by them as a newbie beekeeper!). How about yourself? H

Everybody does a video on youtube when they move to Scotland. We never did although 25 years ago, but I guess there wasn't a UA-cam channel to make our arrival public. Anyway, I wonder what's up with that? People seem to need to advertise they've come here.
Perhaps it also has something to do with letting our existing subscribers know why all of a sudden all of our videos are now from Scotland? To be fair though, I didn't make a video in 1999 when I moved from the Scottish highlands to the south of England either... :)

Yeah, I wish I did have one! I moved to Sussex when I was 14 though 😞 Maybe it will come back 😂🤞
We need some good science explainers. We have Dr Karl, podcast Shirtloads of Science, and Dr Norman Swan, physician (GP) and journalist who's been doing The Health Report (also podcast) for decades. His son, Jonathon, did that interview with President Trump. Norman sounds more Scottish than you do, despite many decades in Australia.
Work on your videos a bit more seriously, maybe do some journalism training, let's see what you can do!
Thank you John, and thank you for the recommendations as well! We are planning to have a few 'special guests' up here in the future so hopefully there will be some collaboration videos to come. Really interesting to hear about your daughter. The last few years have certainly changed how employers view remote working and I'm very thankful to keep my post-doctoral position at the University of Oxford for a little while. I have finished all of the lab work I needed to do for my project, so it is now a case of writing up some papers and I'm also able to provide remote supervision for our PhD students. I enjoy writing more than lab work, so I intend to focus on that now. I never actually had a Scottish accent unfortunately, my parents are English so even when I lived here previously I never sounded 'local' but perhaps I will gain one now! S.
