Hi there, a huge thank you for taking time out to teach! A little background I am 68 and disabled from 2003 from a very rare nerve disease (Dr.s claim that it's one the most painful) I was bedridden for3 yrs. prior I had boxed for 8 yrs. and martial arts since I was a kid. I mentioned this because I am not a quitter. Taught myself to walk then it was time for my hands and arms. Pardon my terminology but I was also a rocker, stoner in attitude so I always wanted to learn the guitar, a nice lady gave me a "toy" guitar, that's what I call it. I found your site and what a ride it has been! I now can move all my fingers and arms, I play a little Zeppelin, and quite a few of your songs that you taught, you have been my teacher and friend thank you so very much! Sorry about the length of this note.
Picking up were I left off 37yrz ago. Stumbled across your video, I had to subscribe! Just bought a used Ibanez electric, because at 57 starting all over again I don't want to die in a kitchen as a chef! I want to die in some old blues Club you are making learning all over again fun! Fantastic work! I don't care what anybody says I always called power chords!
Great song to build picking and power chord confidence, which is precisely what I need. Much thanks Shane. This song is too beautiful to not have in my song list!!! Excited to get that intro up to speed.
SHANE! First time I saw your bodhran! I've been playing for 25 years... When I was learning guitar, I got so frustrated with the DDUDU crap that I just went with my gut...and adopted tipper technique to strumming. In 5 minutes I was playing all the chords I had memorized!! Bodhran. Great teacher! 😁
Thank you James - that drum helps a lot for sure. Same kind of action as strumming. My best to you and hope you're having fun with it all. Cheers, Shane
I love how you show the fingers movement from one cord to another. I usually have to work these things out on my own. Thank you sir for an excellent video.
I've never seen anyone talk so fast, put out such a huge amount of detail...and still make it look do-able. That's quite a skill sir! Thanks. This one will take me a lot of pause/rewinds lol.
As a fellow Canadian growing up in the 70’s there was a ton of great bands around and great songs filled the airwaves so naturally when I came across your UA-cam channel I was hooked! Love your teaching style, love the song selection and the Canadian content, from BTO to The Tragically Hip! A huge fan from The Dirty Shwa! 👍🎸🇨🇦
I want to thank you very much she Ain I've been listening to you for some time now I play guitar I only play by ear but I've certainly learned a lot of stuff from you I'm learning all those diminished chords and sus chords I usually only played standard cords which I'm not a bad player lot of people told me I should even get out there before but you are really helping it along I make ityou you make it feel like wow I need to start all over again thanks again
Hi Shane. Just a quick question.....at 4:08 your last note before you hit c add9 is the open G. At 6:36 and 6:50 it is 1st finger on 2nd fret of G. Can you let me know if I am reading this wrong, or which is the correct one? Thanks. John.
Hi John, thanks for that. The open G is correct as per the original song recording. . It will sound odd if you pause on it but is the right note and sounds good when strung all together. Cheers, Shane
I've always known this was an amazing song, ever since I first heard it way back in '76, but learning it has given me an even deeper appreciation for it's awesome structure! I just love what they did with it! It just **fits** if you know what I mean. Thanks for taking us through it. Definitely adding it to my list of songs I want to learn. 🙂
It's not easy , I'm doing it in manageable chunks , but the pleasure ( and smile ) you get from each mastered part really is immeasurable . Stick at it . Small steps . Nothing really worth having comes easy - If you bite off too big a chunk of steak and try to eat it , it will choke you .Small bites are waaaaay more enjoyable . More than a mouthful ... 😉
Dude, you are so badass. I have been learning so much! You literally think of EVERYTHING in your lessons. Can you please do some Jewel videos? Hello from California!
@Guitar At Work : it's stuff of legend how long Tom Scholz took on his masterpiece but , just as impressive is the amount of time YOU must have taken translating it all into understandable logic for us less gifted mortals . Thank You
I subscribed to your site. Starting guitar at about 15 years old. Got married at 21 had kids and didn't continue until lately. So I am really at a beginner level. Thank you for your video. Now I am 59 my kids are not here anymore so I am so ready to learn how to play again. I know I can play this song with practice. Thank you very much.
Excellent Lesson . Your simple to follow instructions & method of teaching got me to once again pick up guitar . For that i Thank You . Keep up the good work .
Ive just found your channel sir, ive been learning guitar since i was 11 years old, im 57 now and i sort of lost my mojo . You have got me interested again. Thankyou. Subcribed. Carnt wait for more.
Subscribing now! You are a 'keeper' for sure. Best tutorial on this song that I have found. Clarified what others didn't. Brought my understanding to a new level, esp on that tricky rhythm. This definitely will improve my playing. I've been playing two and a half years. Namaste..
If your looking for a song to do ive been trying id love to change the world by ten years after i just can get the picking and that b7 cord look forward to learning with some of these videos thanks
Awesome. I bet you could do a great guitar arrangement on Same Old Lang Syne by Dan Fogelberg. That melody line is to die for. A terrific ballad probably everyone can relate to. It’s more of a piano song but you have a such a gift for emulating the piano pieces on guitar. Can’t believe Fogleberg was taken from us at only age 56 to prostate cancer. I survived it but I feel guilty-just imagine what other incredible songs he would have written if he was still around.
Great lesson, used to see Boston play in the bars on Cape Cod before they were famous. They would blow those small venues out! Any suggestions on how to loosen the right hand strum up and build that fast, loose rhythm style. I’m tight and cannot seem to get it. Part of the problem is the pick slipping and therefore a death grip to keep it in place. I know quite a few people with the same problem. Any help would be great.
I just watched it on exercise bike (the “think” method). Now time to get the guitar and see what happens! This is a grail song for me = high school memories...
That Taylor is fantastic ! It's out of my price range for sure. I've got a 150 and a214ce koa deluxe but they don't sound like that. Thanks for the lesson also.
CAN YOU RECOMMEND, OR DEMONSTRATE SOME OF THESE OFTEN USED "ARPEGIATED CHORDS", AND THE SUB-VARIATIONS, USED TO "WALK BETWEEN ON CHORD, AND ANOTHER, AS YOU DEMONSTRATED IN THIS WONDERFUL TUNE?!...PERHAPS, USE SOME NEIL DIAMOND, OR JOHN DENVER TUNES,... ETC...?
what an amazing class again teacher congratulations teacher is it possible to ask you for a song that i would like to play for my father Neil Young's old man hug teacher and please continue with this excellent work
Thank you Cosmin - I use Logic ProX - straight into the mixer. A little reverb and compression added and that's it. The Taylor guitar has a great pickup system. Cheers! Shane
Watched a half dozen of you’re videos so far and you’ve got to be one of the best guitar teachers on UA-cam or honestly anywhere..
Thank you so much and sorry I missed your message. Cheers! Shane
Hands down the best tutor. Love how you break down songs. Thank you for sharing your talent!!!
Thank you Wayne - hugely encouraging. My very best to you! Shane
Life goal is to play this song with authority because it's so iconic. Great lesson.
Thank you for actually showing the chords BEHIND the solo -all the other UA-camrs duck out of this and it's not that obvious. Much appreciated,
Thanks Dale - very glad it helped you - happy to have you here! Happy New Year!
