The truth is that Boston’s first album was so damn good and iconic that it was next to impossible to ever match its success again. However what an absolutely historic achievement it was.

I saw him play live at Rockfest in Cadott, Wisconsin, the year was 2003, over 20 years ago. I can still see him up there, smiling, having a great time. I considered seeing Boston with Delp in the band one of the high points of my life. In my heart, I wanted to be him, to be that talented, to be that lucky, to be that revered and famous. I'm not alone in any of those sentiments.
At the time of Brad's suicide, I was going through the struggle of my life. I had recently suffered a catastrophic back injury at work, was on the brink of losing my home and income and had a young wife and two small children...it was dark for me. I also had NO support network, far from family and friends...I hope a person can understand how heavy it was. I was and in many ways, still am a fan of Boston so when I heard that Delp had died, I was broken hearted for him but then I found out HOW he died and that really crushed me.
I thought, 'how could a guy that has NO worries or not any REAL worries, take himself out like that?'. I thought, if a guy like HIM can't handle his easy, wonderful life, how the HELL am I gonna make it? I'm afraid to tell you the thoughts I had around that time. Lets just say, if not for HOPE and dedicating my life to doing the best I could for my children's future, I'm pretty sure I was taking the last train out. That was over 20 years ago and while things haven't been all kittens and rainbows, it was worth hanging around for, there were blessings and beautiful days that I'm glad I got to see and be here for. Friends, if it's dark for you, hang on...the sun comes around again and 'this too, shall pass'. GOD bless you all.
I will echo those words that you say. I am going through some dark times now and although it may not be as dark as your was, I am struggling to get through these SLOW days. I have never seen Boston before, so you seeing him before he left, was probably the best feeling that you had. Thank you very much for your story. I hope that it can lift people up and see that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. 🙂🙂

I'm with you in spirit, man. Things have been bad for SO many these days and it's SO difficult to not give in to discouragement and despair, self pity.
I learned you have to start where you are, be realistic, consider what you really need, put others before yourself and be thankful for the small things, the small victories and even your eyes opening every morning.
Everything's going to be OK. You still have control of your effort and attitude and if you can keep those in the red, you're half way there.

Delp killed himself because he was videotaping his fiancés sister and husband who lived in his house. He had a video setup in the bedroom and they found it, confronted him and told him he tell his fiancé or they would. He committed suicide because of what he did and couldn’t tell her.

Yes, crazy stuff. Look it up. There was an article that came out a year later the explained it all. He also did a radio interview a few days before that is on UA-cam where he sounds totally fine like nothing is wrong and it was after he bought all the stuff to kill himself. Crazy when you hear it that it was already planned.
When I was a kid in 76 Somehow I got ahold of their first album on cassette and would play it on my father's forbidden kikass stereo system and dance around the living room until he got home in the evening. It was my first experience with rock and roll and I will never forget it. Thank you boston and rest in peace Brad D.
I got a smile from this. My story exactly. I played all of my records on my step father’s stereo at 6pm, soon as he pulled in the driveway, my sisters and I would run to the living room and close up the stereo’s wall cabinet, then we would disappear to our rooms. Thankfully, he never got home early!

Scholz was a genius but there would have been no Boston without Brad Delp. Such a recognizable and iconic voice.
Yup, that's why album sales post-Delp has pretty much been on the decline. Whether or not Scholz wants to admit it, Brad Delp was the one that contributed the most to the band's success. Tom is brilliant, a good guitarist and innovative with music, did a lot of the writing and producing, but without that golden voice, the band has never been the same.
I can understand having such thoughts I think many of us have but I can't understand actually doing yourself in it seems Brad had a lot to lose very sad and yes he will be missed

The hair STILL stands up on my neck hearing Tom's guitar on these records. On a high end modern stereo, still sounds AMAZING. Props to Tom. And Delp was an amazing singer. No Boston without these two dudes....

In live performances I saw of Boston, Barry played all those killer guitar parts.
What they failed to express in this video is the incredible electronic sound innovations of Tom Schultz, who created one the most amazing distinct original guitar sounds on the planet(The Rockman) not to mention the bands flawless live performances, particularly the live vocal harmonies that were perfectly executed & pitch perfect. This band was uniquely & ENORMOUSLY talented, a TRUE original like never before & never again. Boston’s music & sound will always remain timeless.

Boston debut album was a monster. I remember being at the record store and " More than a Feeling " was playing on the local rock radio station . When it ended they cut to a commercial . After the commercial they played " More than a Feeling " again. IT WAS THAT BIG !

You left out the album third stage that was released in 1986 before walk on. Great album and a great hit song Amanda.

I was thinking "did I miss something"? I read years ago about Third Stage, "out of sight is out of mind in the music business". They took way too long to release it. Tom is an engineer to his core. Engineers and machinists pride themselves on accuracy and perfection.
They really F’d that one up. I remember them being sued because the record label wanted another album. A year or two later “Third Stage” was released and the song “Amanda” was number one for weeks. The album was 4x Platnium.

Boston was my ultimate favorite band growing up. I listened to their albums over and over and over again. My younger sister couldn't stand and even to this day, won't listen any songs from Boston. She said I drove her absolutely crazy by doing what I did. She hates them to this day!! LOL!! Not me, they are my all time favorite band!
One of the things that killed this band early on was taking YEARS between album releases. I remember Larry the Cable Guy saying in one of his routines that Jimi Hendrix had been dead for 40 years and he still was putting out more albums than Boston.

I was 12 when Don't Look Back came out,it changed my life.I still consider that album one of my favorites.I was a little girl discovering my own music outside of the grown ups around me.The first time I heard that song I was just blown away.I have been a headbanger ever since.
Tom Sholtz is a genius,but his perfectionistism has been a double edged sword,that has turned several very talented people out of his band.He also invented several pieces of equipment when recording the first Boston album,that musicians and bands use in recording and performing to this very day.
Brad Delp is one of the absolutely best singers in the history of ever.His death was so tragic and sad.He is very much missed even after 16 years.
Saw them in Providence 1976, during their first headlining tour. Floor seats were SRO, and we were about 10 feet away. Great show 🎶🤘🏼

Then the long in between periods from *Third Stage* ---> *Walk On* ---> *Greatest Hits* (I) ---> *Corporate America* ---> *Greatest Hits* (II) ---> *Life, Love & Hope* killed any hope from this band. Official website hasn't been updated since 2017.

My first concert was Boston during the Don't Look Back tour in '78 at the old Capital Centre outside D.C. Great show. Still have the ticket stub. $7.70 believe it or not.

Worth noting: Boston's original self-titled album was designed by commercial artist Patti Scheer, and back then, the album was not moving because fans did not know what to make of the album cover àrt, originally an eyesore but is now iconic and legendary. There was a Netflix documentary about her that further explains the misunderstood album cover. Shear would go on to do album art for Bruce Springsteen and Cheap Trick specifically for albums "Dream Police" for Cheap Trick and "Darkness At The Edge Of Town" for Springsteen.
They skipped the "Third Stage" album with hits Amanda and Cool The Engines. How did they miss that?

My opinion of Boston was that they made great records, but one of the main features of the band was Delp’s harmonies. Unfortunately they couldn’t come close to reproducing them live with the band members they had. I saw them in 79 headlining a rock Super Bowl in Orlando and it was pretty noticeable. I always thought they should have hired a couple of backup singers, though Goodreau was a pretty good singer.
So them live with Fran Cosmo on backing vocals. Still not close to the studio . But was a improvement.

Please forgive me when I said that Brad Delp took his life in the early 2000s instead of 2007, which was when he actually died. Having adequately said that, I truly loved and also truly miss Mr. Delp's very angelic and vocally high-soaring voice. Boston toured with Rush too. I met 3 people who went to that show in Cincinnati. Star Castle opened then Boston and Rush headlined promoting their 2112 album. That would have been a helluva show!
Fortunately I was able to see them once on their Third Stage tour.
Stellar vocals, harmony, guitar, and drums like no other. The most high vibe band, especially in the early 80's during some of my most depressing and degrading years. Music helps so very much in life. I will always be grateful.🙏💛

I just moved to portland Oregon. And more then a feeling was all over air waves. I met a dude in juniour high listened to the Album..It was very good. I was in a search for Truth. I eventually went to Church Jesus became my Lord and Saviour. Jesus gave me peace and joy. Im so glad God lavished His mercy

Like everyone else, I was a HUGE fan of Boston. They created the soundtrack to my teens- junior high, high school and college. However, I'd be remiss if I didn't also mention how important their album covers were to their success (I believe). The graphic art design was incredible- on ALL of their album covers. A friend of mine played their picture disc album (Boston) and his turntable had a blue light on its needle arm. In the dark, that album glowed! I was hooked forever, and now I not only collect and frame picture discs, but I have several versions of their albums! Obviously, losing Delp was life-changing for the band, but IMO, Sib was the heart of the band, and losing him (quitting, then passing away) was tragic (he was hardly mentioned in this video, too). I later learned that his daughter is married to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, so in a way, he lives on. Rest in Peace, Brad and Sib. There wasn't much of it while alive, unfortunately. The business of music is a such an evil business in many ways.
From David A. Wood: Hello, David from Kettering, Ohio is back here. The legendary 1970s Rock Music Band Boston was/is one of my favorite music bands. "More Than A Feeling," "Hitch A Ride," and "Amanda" are three of my all-time favorite songs. I vaguely remember the time when I heard that Brad Delp died back in the early 2000s. It is so sad to have found out when I saw this UA-cam documentary that he died as a result of a suicide.
Although CBS/Columbia Records put out bands like Journey, Toto and Boston, they were also the ones who screwed these bands up and caused so much headaches.
They took their profits and created so much turmoil within each of these bands and more.
That was companies then and that is companies now. All they care about is taking as much money as they can. I do feel for all bands that are trying to make it big only to get taken advantage of.
Unfortunately alot of musical artists such as Black Sabbath,Grand Funk Railroad,Jimi Hendrix,The Byrd's,Billie Joel just to name a few who were naive to the business were ripped off by shady record executives and managers by signing bogus contracts that cheated them out of millions in royalties.
Because they weren't artists like the bands you mentioned........they are corporate assholes that only care about the bottom line..... profit......

After Boston's monster debut album, I'm sure that CBS/Columbia Records saw a golden goose in them. But while trying to put out Don't Look Back, they were already getting flack from the company.
So right away, the band wanted to break away from the company, but the company were d*cks about it. Because they still wanted to profit off the band, even though they treated them like sh*t!
It wasn't until they moved to MCA Record did they FINALLY release their THIRD album in TEN years.

I was just getting into music in the mid 70s. 3 bands stood out, like REALLY out: Kiss (Destroyer), the Cars debut album.....and of course Boston's. These were radio staples of my youth. What a time to be alive.

The video didn't mention the third album was released in 1986 with Brad still at the helm. Took awhile for Tom to release it because of flooded issues caused by storms ruined some of the studios recording equipment down in his basement.
I saw them in early 80's at Freedom Hall in Johnson City and the next year in Knoxville. Great concert. Brad hit notes that you just don't hear today.
Not a word about Fran Sheehan? The best musically trained member of the band. One of the best bassist of all time.

Brad was touring playing gigs with a beatles tribute band by the name of beatlejuice prior to his death. Brad was awsome singing beatles tunes. He met the guys in the tribute band at a friends wedding and asked to sit in. You could tell from his performance that he was enjoying himself. Their videos are on youtube. Quite entertaining.
Very sad, the night his body was discovered he was scheduled to perform with Beatlejuice. Everyone from the band was there when they heard. People showed up and were crying. One point in this story that was incorrect is that when Delp returned he returned as a hired hand. He was no part of the band. There is a lot more to the story of his death that I won't get into. I met him several times and he always made you feel like a friend. Let him rest in peace.
I remember being turned on to the debut album by a classmate in 7th grade. MTAF was already in heavy radio rotation and now I wanted the album with this awesome guitar ship on the cover. Needless to say I became a longtime fan but didn't see the band live until the 95 Walk On tour with Brad and Fran sharing vocals. Suddenly my love for Boston was amplified and lead me on the search for bootlegs and Rockman gear, subsequently learning many of the guitar parts. Brad's passing hit me pretty hard, and at the time had little interest hearing replacement vocalists even for a tribute show. RIP Brad Delp , The nicest guy in Rock n roll

Just found Barry Goudreau's website. Saw there was an album called Delp and Goudreau. I listened to the songs here on UA-cam. Man, half of them are very creative, unique, different, like their first and second albums. I can only imagine, if these songs had the classic Boston sound with them, how mind blowing they would be. A potential for another original like More than a Feeling, or something so smooth and easy listening like Hitch a Ride. What a mess they turned out to be. Some of those later albums with songs featuring a woman (no knock at all) with no Boston sound whatsoever... what's the point, as it's just to make money like everyone else Sholz abhored. What a mess. Delp's voice is like one of the top 3 best musical voices. At least they gave us the first two albums which gave us that magical feeling as we were growing up.

I saw Boston in Oakland, 1979. They were tight as hell.
I was wondering why this video documentary, didn't include the reason WHY Brad Delp killed himself. I'm going to assume, it was to avoid embarrassment for Brad's family.🤔
Brad thought his fiancee had cheated on him. As he shared a townhouse with her sister, he decided to get her back by putting a hidden camera in her bedroom. She found it, and he apologized, but couldn't stand the shame. He also suffered from depression most of his life. As the video states, he hooked up two gas grills in his half bath and went to sleep.
This was the story I had heard. But it's not well publicized. A sad ending to a great vocalist and musician.

@AFuller2020 Brad Delp's voice was a big part of their sound.
Tom was an engineer, and the few engineers that I’ve known, whoo boy, a little of them goes a long way.

I loved this Band and their music.
I seen them for their big initial tour in Louisville, I think, if I remember correctly, Starz played with them.
Boston is one of my favorite band's . That being said they was a studio band. They was good in concert but their albums were way better. But not to many bands sound as good live

Tragic - because of Tom. If he wasn’t so much of a perfectionist. They could have been one of the great bands of the 70s. Still their 2 first albums. Were some of the best of the 70’s.
RTZ was Boston with out Tom. Barry Goudreau's stuff is top tier plus he's still current. The tone and style of Barry and Tom are so similar it's like guitar "ABBA"

Tom Scholz was a tremendous artist, but you have to be able to produce music in a timely manner. A business can't just be held off for years to deliver an album.

The first album had a badass imaginative cover as well, when scifi was just peaking. Fit the era perfectly. And yeah, the album was so good, good luck trying to match it, but they could've just chilled and gave it a few tries. The second album was not mixed anywhere near as well. The label probably phucked up a lot of things, just wanting to grind the next record out.
The followup to 'Corporate America" was released a few years later and was another failure. "Corporate America" didnt sell because Artimis went bankrupt almost right after it's released. Warren Zevon was also on the label and his album suffered the same fate.
Corporate America really wasn't that good. The 3 songs 🎵 Delp sang on were very weak. I admit I did like "TURN IT OFF" a song 🎵 NOT sung by Delp on that album.
Yeah, as much as I want to like "Corporate America". I just can't. It's just not that good.

@waltersimmons946 unfortunately, Boston took a slight step downward with each consecutive release, in my opinion. I bought the first three albums and I liked the first two. The third one had its moments, but that was it for me. I've heard the other ones and I'm glad I didn't buy them.

To be honest I bought Corporate America 🇺🇸 and was disappointed then in 2013 I bought LIFE , LOVE and HOPE the CD was $10.00 much more disappointing two or 3 songs 🎵 on Life, love and Hope were the exact same songs 🎵 from Corporate America and were as Scholz put it in the credits "REMASTERED". What a joke.
Like many i bought the first album in 76 and loved it. Like it or not, the sound was incredibly influential and they were finally inducted to the hall of fame a few years ago. The mystery began with that debut album, which was essentially recorded by 2 guys, tom and brad. The studios wanted a "band" to promote, and that lead to a failed effort to rerecord the scholz demos, the nonsense blurb on the back of the debut, and many legal wranglings. Tom getting rich and brad not so much is no surprise, as that's how publishing royalties work.
The story that best explains Brad's demise involves his obsession with his fiance's sister, and voyeurism. He had enough money from touring to own a second home. He offered it to his fiance's sister and she lived there with her boyfriend. This was early 2000's and webcams were just turning up in the mainstream consumer market. Brad set one up in the bedroom closet, clearly to watch them have sex. the boyfriend found it. The couple told brad he had to admit what he did to his fiance or they would out him. He never did and, as the wedding drew near, they theatened to tell her instead. He killed himself rather than face her. So, yeah he had a bit of depression, but the little sister was cute, he got obsessed, and thought he could work the technology angle and got caught. Little sister understantably wanted big sis to know who she was marrying. The whole thing sucks. In 2023 it's pretty easy to see how brad could've walked away from that gang and just denied it all. But i think he felt ashamed. The reasons no one talks about it are 1) it's a bit creepy, 2) it does nothing to serve the boston legend, and 3) it's technically heresay.
After the last 2, I can only pray we'll never get another Boston record
A "10 record deal" is a HORRIBLE deal. Multi-record deals are always option deals meaning the label has the option to do another record (or not). Normally a 10-record deal is one guaranteed record plus 9 options. The label's option not the band. In the event of a success you're stuck at a low royalty rate given to unproven bands. Labels love that. In the event of a failure you're stuck with a label who doesn't care about you, won't exercise options and your career is over. You want a 3-record deal. Enough to give a chance of success, and if successful you can negotiate a better deal ( with any label) but not enough that you're stuck at a label if it doesn't go well. I personally have never seen more than a 7 record deal, and those are very bad. But the novice thinks the more the better so of course, as in this video, a long deal is considered amazing. The labels know this, they know how naive artists are and they take every advantage. 10 records is more than the entire career of most bands. How many records did the Beatles release? Don't you think they should have gotten a better deal after Revolver? They didn't.

I’ve always noticed , even as a kid in the 70s, a lot of their songs come across to me as songs about depression. A man I’ll never be in particular. Sholtz, although a genius, is a control freak and probably suffers from a severe narcissist personality. In a lot of cases he was his own worst enemy who needs to be right all the time instead of picking his battles and would have been very hard to work with. I feel such empathy for Mr Delp because I’ve absolutely no doubt that the battles he experienced with Sholtz drove him to take his own life and if Sholtz doesn’t realize that, he’s not as smart as he thinks he is. So my question to Sholtz is; so how do you feel ,now that your in your 70s, to have fought and alienated so many people and to be the main cause of one of your most loyal friends? Was it worth it? Not that you’d ever admit it.
