In regard to American remakes of foreign films I feel that the remakes often overshadow the originals if they are made too quickly after the release of their “predecessors”. For example David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, I think has almost completely overshadowed the original, whenever I mention the title of it to other film-fans, 7/10 of them automatically assume I am referring to Fincher’s. I’m thinking it’s because the studios don’t allow the originals to grow a reputation of their own, that instead of taking inspiration from it (such as the case with City On Fire and Reservoir dogs), they merely copy 70-80 % of it with some small adjustments. Personally I think it’s should become a norm, that you don’t remake any movie until 10 years after it was released.
