La Tregua or The Truce, is an outstanding argentinian film. It was directed by the maestro Sergio Renan and was the very first film that received an Oscar nomination in the category of Best Foreing Language Film. If you can watch it, please do it!!

I'd like to make an observation: Everyone who "is" nominated receives an Academy Award Nomination! .... and it looks nice on the wall of one's home or office.

Movie was nominated for director and screenplay the following year. It was not uncommon for foreign language films to achieve this anomaly, but rules were changed about 10 years ago so I could not happen now.

Day for night also had that peculiarity. The movie won best foreign film in 1974, but in 1975 was nominated for original screenplay, directing and supporting actress.

@@dgrancastillo The were about 10 foreign movies that achieved this feat with nominations a year after a foreign film nomination. THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS was unique as its the only film with a two year gap.

I love Fellini, Amarcord, and La Strada. And if Sinatra said that today he would be shunned, black listed, and ruined. Instead of just two friends breaking balls.

I love how they’re talking about filmmakers saving the world only to award “Amarcord” which is pretty much a movie about young men staring at women’s asses. Wonderful film but I don’t think Fellini was exactly out to save the world with that project.

While loving "Amarcord," in retrospect I feel "Lacombe, Lucien" should have won. Louis Malle's scorching indictment of French collaborationists with the Nazis is still hair-raising. And the fate of the young non-professional who played the title role adds even more poignancy to the film's conclusion. R.I.P., Pierre Blaise.
