Beautiful stuff! A splendid demonstration of the 109’s tremendous capability as a fighter
Unfortunately it was vastly inferior to the P-51. Towards the end of the war it was very telling when most of the experienced pilots had been shot down or killed. The Germans worked with Nitrous oxide to gain performance but it was a little to late. Computer games do not depict the what was really the difference between the 2 planes.
@@dohcsmr1175 well sure, but this video depicts the 109 in the prime of its life. All planes get obsolete eventually!
Even in the late war, when the 109 was an unquestionably aging design, I think the decisive factor against it was being outnumbered massively in the sky and the degradation of the quality of Luftwaffe pilot training.
@@hanswolfgangmercer Nazi can still produce enough planes to cover the loss in paper near the end of the war, but producing a plane is easy, producing a pilot is not. Which bring us to an interesting question: How did the soviet airforce metamorphosis into a very mature and competent tactical air force in 1944-45 despite suffering a similar onslaught by the Nazi during 1941-42? This question is untouched in the western sphere of ww2 history.

It’s crazy to think I had 300 hours into IL 1946 this was my all time favorite in the mid 2000’s
One of my flight instructors was a B 17 pilot and told me about a P 38 coming up along side and shutting down one engine and feather it. Gave the other engine the gas and walked away from them like they were standing still.
Pilots say a lot, when the day is long :D
Not surprising. A B-17 cruises at, what, 180, 190 mph? Even on 1 engine, a P-38 would easily be able to cruise somewhere around 230, 240 mph. (The same as a P-26 Peashooter at top speed!)
@@timonsolus you mean a p38 with one damaged engine would be able to reach like 230mph on full throttle 😉

Franz Stigler, an ace with 28 kills (and later to be well known for that B-17 incident), flew BF-109s against the P-38 in North Africa.
Stigler said the Lightning "could turn inside us with ease and they could go from level flight to climb almost instantaneously. We lost quite a few pilots who tried to make an attack and then pull up... One cardinal rule we never forgot was to avoid fighting the P-38 head on. That was suicide." Stigler said the best defense was to flick-roll the BF-109 and dive, as the Lightning was slow in the first 10 degrees of roll, and it was not as fast in a dive.
I call BS on this. First off, 28 kills is not an Ace in german terms. German "Ace" status begins at 100. If you get outturned by a Lightning in a 109, you are straight up incompetent. Never trust Veteran reports. They talk a lot, when the day is long. You always have to confirm stuff with other sources. Some 109s might have gotten outturned by P-38s, but it heavily depends on many factors. Pilot skill, loadout, altitude etc.

@@Fishyyy Thank you for the reply! The Bf-109F is my favourite variant of the Bf-109. The same variant used by Hans Jochaim Marieselle, aka the Star Of Africa.

@@rbgerald2469 The F4 became my favorite too. Especially Galland's improved versions feel well rounded.
I like the one with double MG131s the most. I think a F2/Z with 2x 131 and a single 151/20 would be ideal. If course the 151/20 wasn't available yet when Galland ordered his desired modifications to be done

If I had to compare the 109, to a modern jet fighter, I would probably compare it to the mig 21.

No way it doesn't matter what squadron that 109 is from! At least 3 occasions the P38's should of had em. At least 2 overshoots whereas the P38 banked away!!! I love the know the settings? A 109 running down a P38 that's a joke 😳. Unrealistic in every way imaginable. Video itself was 👌 🆗️
ummm, uhhh... wait a minute, wouldn't it be cool if ww2 pilots could use an arcade sort of view to keep situational awareness? big help in taxi as well. i assume the other players do not use this as i could see no bodies following their aircraft. hmmm come to think of it i could see you in your cockpit as you were viewing yourself! this is so cool. is it a sort of alien tech. i bet the airforce would love to know how to do this.
I played in first person only. The external views are filmed from a replay after the fact.
The P-38 pilots in this simulation don't seem to know what they are doing. They flying slow when it's their speed that gives them the advantage, they are completely ignoring the BF109 from the JG27 Afrika corps. The P-38 is far faster then the 109 depending on which models we are talking about here. The fastest BF109 moved at 439 MPH while the P-38J had a top speed of 619 MPH.
But World War 2 was over in 1945. How could there be a dogfight in 1946?
