Just to add on, Russia actually joined NATO in the Tom Clancy universe in "The Bear and the Dragon" book so Russian units being in Rainbow makes sense.
I was looking for someone to comment this. But in the later post-9/11 books Russia is still portrayed as antagonistic so maybe that changed when Clancy realized that wasnt going to happen.
Under Putin, Russia will never join nato. The West should had fought back against Putin 10 years earlier, right before the Ukranian coup and before his re-election as president. This way, Putin could had perhaps been weakened enough and disposed.
russia will never be with nato in the real world lol
Russia wanted to join NATO on multiple occasions, always trying to improve relations. NATO, however, has declined all of those advances, because they want to keep a convenient enemy. Now people of Ukraine and, to a lesser degree, Russia, are suffering because of it. I don't know how long this antagonistic torture will go on for, but the West seems to have zero desire to actually resolve the conflict of interest.
Why do yall have an issue with what country is in a video game acting like it's reflexes reality... it's a fictional game and Ubisofts choice to have the story they want... and if they want a world in which Russia is with nato and the main threat is aliens, viruses, terrorism, let them don't act like a child because you don't have what you want... if that's the case go buy a game based on current evens
"Why is Russia in R6?"
Why not? They also have experience against terrorist. Also spetznaz operators are highly trained.
Also in the R6 universe,Russia didn't invade Ukraine so making a censorship to the Russian operators don't make sense.
Rainbow is supposed to be a coalition for the greater good. Even if every north American has in the mind: Russia bad
There are good people living there too.
even if they did invade them that dont got nothing to do with them being removed from the game, how many countries from the game invaded someone at some point

I could see this. The first time I heard him question the Spear 308's design I was like Yo, is Greggie boy an undercover gun nerd?
I fucking love guns
Y'all didn't see his video on Vanguard yet and it shows haha
Greg, please drop more content like this the little military history tidbits in your videos are what got me subscribing years ago
Seconded.
I also love the Brazil documentary, still watch it from time to time it is so well done.
Yeah, love to see more insight in countries in terms of wars or counterterrorist experiences and explain maybe why they are on rainbow.
Honestly yes, I loved his quick little operator team origin videos. And it seems he likes to make the videos, they just don't do that well sadly.
Agreed
Yea. I was raised by competition shooters and this kind of stuff interests me. The gun and military history trivia is a good fit for your content.
Ubisoft's take on Tom's work always struck me as a deeply idealistic view on the world order coming out of the cold war where international cooperation would always endure and the bad guys were never actually the ones in power. Rather than the US centered cynicism and exceptionalism seen in the source material.
While this is probably because they want to sell their titles all over the world without offending people it's nice to see the games analyzed through this lense.
But overtime, it becomes painfully uninspired and even senseless with all the wacky shizz happening with Siege and literally the existence of Extraction alone is nonsensical.
Ubisofts Tom Clancy games aren't Tom Clancy games. The guy may have been a stereotypical "red blooded murican patriot" but that's what made his black and white "USA GOOD" "USSR BAD" style media so memorable. If you're not someone who'd drink the tribalistic koolaid his works view could give off then the ultra clean version ubisoft made just looks kinda uncanny and disingenuous. Our world is sewn in conflict between people who usually don't even actually want to fight each other when you get down to the nitty gritty. But political tides force our hands, and Clancys point of view, while biased. Painted a pretty clear albeit dramatized depiction of these global power struggles and the conflicts of interest the service members had to go through.
War is nuanced, but Clancy was one of those guys that when you really understand his POV you can say he's "telling it like it is" in a sense.
Splinter Cell went in that direction early on. Basically no country could wipe the blood off their hands efficiently, so they wore gloves to hide it so to speak. Sam Fisher does both "good" and "bad" things for his country and his family. There are parts of the games where he criticised Lambert because of what he was being ordered to do.
It comes down to who can be viewed as the bad guy or not when it comes to doing good or bad deeds.
Hiding the Russian ops biography is dumb move and screams "activism" to me
The person who made the call seem to care more about their own image than the fictional story
Real world events shouldn't effect an already established fictional character
Fans already like these characters and doing this only alienate Russians as human beings from the rest of the world
Also if they're removing the biography of Russian ops because of current events then they should do the same for the Chinese ops and ash (since she's Israeli)
Tbf the Chinese ones were specifically from Hong Kong all along
@@bloodraven2o1o Hong Kong but using Chinese guns
I checked out the russian op bios in game earlier today and they were all there
@@looper7159 They deleted it from official site not in game
And let’s remember the warning thing that they say: “Everything is purely fictional or random references
I appreciate this kind of content and I hope to see more of it. Personally, I don't have a problem with some Russian operators, because I've always thought of Rainbow as something that was above the existing systems. The only rub I have with R6 Siege, as you said, is its lack of any political stance or really anything noteworthy narratively at all. Siege's gameplay is the only reason we come back to it so often, which is fair enough. But it's an ideology and strong world-building combined with great gameplay that makes a player identify with it even more. Unfortunately at this point, I believe Ubisoft is too scared to ever pen any kind of fictional narrative ever again, which is a real shame considering they have such potential.
Rainbow six siege was always supposed to be this super secretive organization that few people know about
But the current writing team is turning it into a Netflix high-school drama
Yeah the old school R6S writing was more gritty military stuff since it came from the R6 lineage and was the replacement for R6 patriots. These days it's just kind of cartoony and wacky it's hard to take serious.
@@bandarsalh1338 i agree so fucking much with this... Personally the main reason i played R6 was cause of its tacticool operators. But i dropped the game once it started becoming what it is today....

7:29 I think we still need to talk about this weird pivot
Where Six put together an elite team to prepare for something huge about to go down
And Harry took over, and said WE CAN MAKE OUR OWN SUPERBOWL. Look how much NFL makes every year, we gotta get in on that
Making it an event was...weird. I think the plot of his attempt to make the perfect teams was cool and fit his job. He knows these operators on a personal level and understands the human mind. He wants teams that can work perfectly together. But why also have a stadium match?
@@garrettwade1294 I've been hearing that the stadium is still off limits to civilians and that the place was actually empty when matches took place.
@@agentlinrov1474
It is off limits to civilians. But it's still weird. Why a stadium? Why not any typical kill house around the world?
@@garrettwade1294 Im guessing it is to get operators to be competitive and do everything to win, allowing them to maintain their level of profession when combating terrorists and criminals.
@@agentlinrov1474 Yet, despite this, we still have no campaign in the game? A PVE to be side by side with the PVP? This SuperBowl thing makes the whole think into a big joke
"Waitttt.. I'm Russian??"
“So I supposed to know something about it?!”
I've always seen it as there was some tie in with older Tom Clancy game titles where Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, and Rainbow Six all exist. Future Soldier was released in 2012 and Blacklist was in 2013, so Siege had the position of "we prevent the events of those games by having CTU operators from all countries, even our "enemy" Russia in order to have world peace". Of course, that narrative got dropped now that Siege's original siege writer works on Modern Warfare and we have anime
you mean wannabe anime? cause it's like crunchy rolls fake anime. its a rip
In the Tom Clancy books, Russia joined NATO, so this makes sense in the Tom Clancy universe
Thanks for making this video, and shedding some light on the issue. I always agreed with your videos about Rainbow being about including operators from all walks of life, with their skillset and experience benefitting the group on the whole. Be it the meganerd that is Mute or the walking artillery barrage that is Fuze.
Not all Russians agree with what is happening. I would really like to say the majority of us don't. There are some that do, and some that simply choose to ignore the glowing neon signs that this is wrong. Stopping it is an issue, of course. Speaking out has been becoming more and more difficult, with Facebook and all other meta programs being shut down, and the other way (protesting) being the golden ticket to getting a beating from police. Regardless, when I heard news that Russian op bios were removed, or changed, it felt bad. Because it felt like those of us who are against the invasion were being shut off from the world regardless. The Russian military (and mentions of it) is bound to leave a poor impression on people, but it still feels like being shut off, in a way, from something you love. Regardless of what you (the operator) personally think, or can do to help Rainbow, if that makes sense.
Thanks for making the video. Very informative, and quite balanced. Can't wait to see more like this!
Can’t agree more.
I'd like to think that even if current events were to somehow be considered in the R6 lore, Russian operators are still present because although the operators themselves might and often do have their own political and cultural alignments, Rainbow is a neutral organization.
So theoretically speaking I could see how Putin in theory would allow Russian operators to remain in Rainbow because it is not a part of or subservient to NATO or the "West".
Would work if Rainbow was founded by UN members or the UN influenced its founding, but it was still founded by NATO.
@@memecliparchives2254 NGL I wouldn't trust the UN to do something productive like that; they'd ask for funding and go quiet when people wanna see where the money goes
Also, the relations ships with Russia in the past were far better then they are now. They were arguably doing GOOD work in Syria if you actually look at the facts, they warned us of the Boston bombers and have passed us intel on common threats multiple times, and we even did JOINT OPERATIONS with them a few times under Bush. I mean look up joint peace keeping of Bosnia/Serbia you can find US Bradley crews eating with Russian BMP crews.
They aren’t universally bad people at all, most are just trying go through life and survive the same as we are, to give their kids a better life then they had. Even their on the ground military isn’t bad, I’ve had drinks with Russian VDV soldiers on leave in Germany.
But they suffer from a terrible government that considers the care of the people the lowest priority much like ours. We could, SHOULD be friends even allies but political parties will never let it happen, hate them on both sides but don’t hate the average citizen.

I'm fairly certain TIE fighters shoot green because of the Third Reich of Germany during WW2. MG42s and 34s were very famous for green tracers, as were German aircraft.
Yeah I was very confused. I heard them say that and all I thought was: I'm fairly certain that that is entirely false.
To know more search up Russian rule 34
I disagree. Star Wars clearly has far more Vietnam/Cold War era influence than WWII influence
@Dark Arts Dabbler are you kidding me?
In the original trilogy, WW2 era guns were extremely prevalent. The MG34, Sterling SMG, Sturmgewehr 44 are the most famous examples, as well as the Mauser C96 which while older than the second world war, still saw service in that conflict.
Imperial uniforms are based on German ones. Darth Vaders helmet as well as other imperial helmets are modeled from German helmets.
The term Stormtrooper is a direct translation from German SturmTruppen, a WW1 and WW2 era assault soldiers.
Imperial ships, the ISD in particular has some inspiration from German Warships such as Bismarck, the secondary fire control was housed in dome like structures similar to the shield generators on top of the bridge of the ISD.
I already mentioned German tracers were famously green, where most other nations used orange or red.
TIE Fighters make a characteristic sound specifically to be reminiscent of the dive sirens on German Ju87 Stuka early war models, which used it as a terrorizing sound.
Even the glass cockpit of the tie fighter is reminiscent of multiple world war 2 era aircraft.
Certain stormtrooper classes, and death troopers have magazine pouches directly taken from German soldiers equipped with the MP40 SMG.
The Death Star itself is a reference to Germany putting insane numbers of resources into superweaposn that ended up being their downfall.
I could go further but I'm too lazy, I really have no idea how you came to the conclusion that the cold war period had more influence on Star Wars.
Sure, George Lucas referenced the rebellion as similar in position to the Vietcong, a guerilla force, but their aesthetic and tactics are more reminiscent of various European resistance groups to German occupation, like partisans.
While I have completely quit playing Siege and don't see a return to it anytime soon, this is one of my favorite Siege videos I've seen, Gregor. I've always loved Clancy's works, and loved the idea of an elite top-secret organization focused on stopping terrorist threats around the globe, and REALLY loved the idea that Russians and Americans could finally become allies. I still watch your Siege videos because I love your style, and your input is one in a million. And this video is amazing in the input department. It aches my heart to see the wedge between the West and Russia driven further down, as the people are genuinely great people. Thank you for the video, Gregor.
Fun fact the Galil has a bottle opener because they figured it was easier to give a lot of their troops bottle openers than it was to convince them to stop using the feed lips of Uzi magazines
really loving the history lesson type stuff, greg. keep up the great content as always
This is certainly a good pace of content, while I was around for the Val content and enjoyed it. This semi political perspective of the presence of nations within fiction is very intriguing and would like to see more.

I just wanted to say that this was a phenomenal video greg and I enjoyed it from start to finish
This was a DAMN good video Greg. Well done bro, keep up the good work!!!
Incredible video, seriously. Never realised this topic had such depth relating to Clancy
Fun fact no one really knows is that the USSR and the Russian federation both wanted to join NATO but was declined by the west
Because they weren't interested in cooperation but rather seeing how serious NATO was about the whole no communism thing
Now I'm just picturing Tom Clancy reacting to Ubi putting all these anime waifus in the game. Thanks Greg
Good video. We'll made. Honestly I'm worried that they're gonna remove the Russian ops like a lot of companies have removed Russian things. Which has been just ludicrous to see. Not being able to play pokemon go just hurts the Russian civilians who didn't want this war to begin with.
I hope they don't touch the backstories of the Russian operators. I've come to know and love Tachanka's especially because of his appearance in a mobile game called Arknights.
He's just such a nice character to have in a game world filled with so much suffering, he talks to some student's from Arknights' version of Russia (Called Ursus) and it's quite heart-warming:
(The following is translated from Chinese so it might not be completely accurate. The dialogue is kinda hard to follow so I've titled it with who says what with a T for Tachanka and an I for Istina, the other character in the conversation.)
On the top deck of Rhodes Island, a soldier and a young girl are watching the sun set over the horizon.
I -"Mr. Alexander..."
"You were... a soldier?"
T -"I am a soldier now."
I - "What kind of place is your homeland?"
T - "A very good place."
The older veteran looked into the distance and described his hometown to the young girl beside him.
From the Volga River to the hills of Mamayev.
All are scenes that do not exist in this world.
I - "You, love that land?"
T - "I always loved everything."
"And you?"
I - "In Chernobog, I lost everything, my family... my friends."
T - "So you ended up staying here?"
I - "...Ursus has no place for me."
"Sonia and Lada need me too."
"Now... I'm Still very young."
"I'm still weak."
"Maybe one day, I can return to Ursus and help more people."
"Maybe one day, I can become stronger and make Ursus become A better place."
"Not just me, more people can go back to Ursus, back to their homeland."
"Does the idea... sound childish?"
T - "No, Anna."
"Your ambitions are very great."
"No one can laugh at great ideals."
"If you really want to return to Ursus one day to realize your ideals."
"I look forward to that day."
I -"Thank you, Mr. Alexander..."
"Thank you......"
Sorry if this just seems kinda out of place, I just really like talking about how well the Rainbow 6 ops (Ash, Blitz and Frost) were included in the game and not just tacked on.
I love these kinds of videos, and I'm really glad that you're talking about this in an objective way. I would love to see more history content from you, military or otherwise.
I learned a bit from this video especially the Star Wars bit. Very educational. Thanks Gregor :^)
Greats video! I think Rainbow Six the novel (which was written after Tom Clancy sold the idea for the video game) was written at a time of optimism around Russia, where many thought they would slowly but surely integrate into the new world order and would be willing to provide Spetsnaz to a global counter-terrorism task force. It was released the year before Putin came to power, and he has obviously turned Russia back to its old ways more than into the future. Maybe Ubisoft assumed if Russia participated in the good old days they would continue to do so into present day, but based off the creative direction they’ve gone with Siege, I don’t think those initial inclinations lasted long.
The fact that you highlight the Galil's integrated bottle opener makes me happy lol

Greg imma be honest. I think this is the best video you've ever made.
Finland uses comblok calibers. Hell, we even use a lot of USSR guns still, like the PKM and Dragunov, and the Sergei AA machine gun in 12,7mm
They're adding a colombian operator, this year, so I guess and hope recent World events wont impact the game overall vision
I spent 9:24 of my life waiting for a clear cut point to start the video at

also in the old Rainbow Six games like in Rainbow Six 1998 also had a Russian operator (with a good looking mustache), Ubisoft censoring Russian operators to "show support for Ukraine" is stupid and not a way to show support, and i am tired of the Russophobia and "Russia bad", like both sides of conflicts did bad things, anyways i'd like to see more content like this
