    Good question Remi. I've never seen them give descriptive results like that for yellow or gray before. It's interesting that it was on this brown one.

    I could never appreciate diamonds because they are too shiny and blinky for my taste but now I see that darker colors are much prettier to me ! Greys and Brown-Pinky -- beautiful. Still can't afford them. :)

    What a great video! Thanks for posting this. I've only started collecting gems within the last couple of years and I have to say I'm hooked. People (myself included) just don't understand the attaction to "shiny rocks", until you hold them in your hand, feel the weight and see how the light shines through a good cut. It wasn't until I bought a couple of 2 point white diamonds, VVS color H and held them under a light that I "got it". Seeing something that small throw off that much fire, color and sparkle was magical. But I digress, I have been wondering how colored diamonds varied in value and this video totally helped me understand it. Theres a big differance between a diamond being white with off-color tones and a diamond simply being a color other than white it would seem.

    I have a question for you, I am having a custom pendant made and the diamonds are rows of the micro diamonds... i have a good price for SI 1 I color, they wanted to go with SI 1 H color, but of course its a bit more money. With the diamonds being so small is the difference in H and I color worth the extra money? Set in yellow gold.

    • @edennis8578
      @edennis8578 4 роки тому +1

      I would think it would be very hard to tell a color difference when the diamonds are small, and especially so in yellow gold as opposed to white metal. As with any transparent stone, the smaller the stone, the less depth of color you see. How did it turn out?

      1. The dimensions of your pink sapphire (with an image would be nice so I can duplicate the coloring too).
      2. The shape(s) of side stones you are considering to set alongside of your pink sapphire.
      3. Your finger size.
      4. Your metal preference (plat, gold (pink, yellow, white or green).
      5. Your skin tone.
      and then I can make a couple of renders for you showing you what your pink sapphire would look like alongside of diamonds, colored diamonds or even other colored gemstones! :) Get on it now girl and we'll look out for your email. ;) Make sure to mention you were dialoging here with me on the UA-cam channel too so I know who you are. :)

    Hi, You showed a White Diamond at the beginning next to the other Colored 3 , is that first white one considered more expensive than th Yellow,Brown and the Gray? what you call the body color of that first WhiteDiamond ? are you suggesting that when we buy a diamond we should ask what Body color it is ?

    • @DiamondInfoMan
      @DiamondInfoMan  7 років тому

      Greetings Gold. In answer to your questions ... yes the first diamond is the most valuable of the diamonds shown and is graded a "G" color on a scale that runs from D-Z. For more info on that you may want to see my tutorial here.
      www.goodoldgold.com/diamond-color And yes ... I am suggesting you ask what tone the body color is. If the diamond is brown or gray it will generally trade at a considerably lower price.

      Hi juliehuynh05 . In an "E" color diamond this becomes a non issue as "E" is colorless (ie. without color) and one would not detect these hues we are demonstrating here in the video. Thank you for your question.

      Blue, green as well as pink red, orange, etc are very beautiful and highly valued as well but they are not among the most popular with regards to what we see daily. Those would be properly classified under "fancy" colors while the more common yellow, brown and gray's would not. I hear you though. :)

    What does graduate down means . Does it mean that your diamond will gradually turn either yellow or brown ?

    • @DiamondInfoMan
      @DiamondInfoMan  8 років тому +2

      +Naru Uchiha Nope. The color is the color and will remain that way UNLESS it is purposely radiated to alter it. It will not happen naturally over time. The graduation I'm referring to depends on the amount of nitrogen present in the crystallized carbon as it is forming into diamond.

    Does setting a stone in yellow or white gold have any affect on color? Thanks.

    • @DiamondInfoMan
      @DiamondInfoMan  6 років тому +1

      Not really although it can either provide a good "blend" or perhaps "contrast" depending on the color of the diamond and the metal used. For example if you are considering a warmer colored diamond (L/M/N etc.) yellow gold would provide more of a blend and actually may make the diamond even look whiter, while setting a warmer colored diamond in white gold would make the color stand out more. The yellowish diamond against the white gold or platinum would provide more contrast in the coloring. Some people like either or both. Warm colors work very well in the August Vintage line as their optics are ideal.

    So why is color necessarily important if when looking down on the table, there is not really a difference to the naked eye when comparing colors?

    • @DiamondInfoMan
      @DiamondInfoMan  6 років тому +1

      Because depth of color or lack of it = rarity. In diamond rarity = value even if you can't necessarily see it with your eyes. Same would hold true for clarity. Visibly you can't see the difference between an Internally flawless diamond and a VS2 yet there is a notable difference in value. It's another reason why we pound cut quality ... because that is the ONE factor that not only impacts value but more than clarity or color impacts the beauty of the diamond.

    Why are yellow diamonds all the rage now, I always thought the yellower the diamond the poorer the quality, that the whiter a diamond the better. I know " canary" diamonds are valuable but they are bright yellow...many of these "fancy" yellow diamonds just seem to be end of the scale diamonds, a marketing ploy ...

    • @yoongs3878
      @yoongs3878 6 років тому +5

      No. Coloured white diamonds are not evenly coloured, or radiantly or vividly coloured.They fall on the J/K-Z GIA scale and are a dull mucky yellow. Under magnification, you can see that the colour concentrates in the tips/extremes of the diamond. Canary diamonds are vividly and most importantly EVENLY coloured. They have a special GIA grading scale for their colour and are officially recognised by GIA. That is a lot more information to take in, so they are also called Sunburst, or Soleste (depending on which jeweller's marketing you read) for this reason. It is even harder to find these diamonds on a better clarity grade unlike white diamonds. They are formed in nature in exceptional circumstances. For example, fancy/vivid pink diamonds can only be spit up to the face of the earth from a volcano or a similar condition. Chemicals in the diamond cause the colour, and the they shouldn't affect clarity or uniformity of colour to form a valuable GIA graded fancy diamond. This is why they are called rare. Its hard to get your hands on a single coloured 2 to 3+ carat coloured stone of VS quality and higher, because believe me, I have searched for it. It is said that only 20% of the world's diamonds are a fancy colour, and even less are pure coloured without a secondary colour. Diamonds like pink-orange, yellow green, yellow brown cost less than pure orange, pure yellow, and pure pink. If it was all just a scam and conspiracy theory, then these diamonds wouldn't be auctioned off at Christie's to jewellery collectors.

    • @TheKazukazu2
      @TheKazukazu2 5 років тому +2

      yoongs Lattice deformation May also cause other colors. The red diamonds are the rarest. Is it true that 1% of diamonds are legitimately fancy colored? By this I am referring to fancy colors of fancy, fancy intense, fancy vivid, fancy deep.Is it also true that a legitimate GIA graded D,E,or F color diamond is about 1% out of all diamonds?

    with body color do you mean "Fluorescence" that is used on websites to describe diamonds? A lot of times for many diamonds it is saying "strong blue"? or is Fluorescence something else then body color? thanks, very informative video!

    • @DiamondInfoMan
      @DiamondInfoMan  6 років тому

      Thanks keska. Nope. :) It is true that fluorescence can impact how we perceive body color but it isn't actually body color. In this video I show yellow, brown and gray body colors but even diamonds that have yellow as a body color can contain blue fluorescence which wouldn't change the actual body color of the diamond but it would make the diamond look "whiter" in lighting environments that activate the fluorescence (like direct sunlight). I teach more about this here ... ua-cam.com/video/oWWwp-u7DBo/v-deo.html

    how much would 2,38 carats round cut VVS,( I would say second in your raw/ slight yellow M colour) would cost today? I also know when it comes to a big size stones
    price goes 2 to 2,5 carats,then2,5-3 carats so 0,5 carats doesn't make a big difference on a price ?

    • @DiamondInfoMan
      @DiamondInfoMan  9 років тому

      Hi amsterdamlove
      Correct ... once you hit certain marks in the weight your price per carat is going to rise. Believe it or not you can see increases starting even as early as the 2.15+ct mark although most definitely once you hit 2.20ct, then another at 2.5ct, and slight increases as you reach upwards of 2.9xct
      The price variations found within M VVS in these sizes can also vary based on the cut quality of the diamond (light leakage, etc.) and whether there are issues with graining, fluoro, etc. For example as I perform a query for 2.3-2.49ct M VVS round diamonds with GIA Reports I see options varying from the low teens to the high teens separated by a number of factors (too many to list here). If you would like our expertise in handpicking the best crystal with the highest optics drop us an email and we'll be happy to assist. Thank you kindly for your comment and question.

      @7charlierox I think a gray color shows a lot less in a white mount than brown or yellow. My engagement ring was a grayish diamond in an 18k white-gold mount, and I had no idea that it was gray for many years. In platinum, which looks more gray, you could probably tell even less because there's less contrast between the stone and the metal. Put the diamond next to the metals to see how the tones influence each other.

      +S H Desai When it comes to the common colors it is the ones that decrease to yellow which hold the highest value. The browns and gray's will always bring value down HOWEVER there are some diamonds classified as browns which actually have pink undertones which we find very beautiful and are not quite like other "browns" we see.

    how long does it take for a diamond to graduate to its true color?

    • @DiamondInfoMan
      @DiamondInfoMan  7 років тому +3

      Hi Esther. It happens long before it gets on your hand. Diamond itself is crystallized carbon and the body color (when yellow) is caused by nitrogen. It is debateable about the "time" it takes for it to turn yellow buy my educated speculation is that it would happen as quickly as it takes the carbon to become crystallized. Some say millions of years however science in the lab has shown it the process can happy significantly quicker!

    Diamonds are intrinsically worthless. De Beers company launched one of the most successful ad campaign in history. Tanzanite, Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, are all rarer and more valuable than diamond. So Buy those, and save your money in investment for retirement or brokerage account that pays passive income.

      Tanzanite (which I love) is more rarer than diamonds and when the mines are empty in the next 25 to 30 years they will most likely be more valuable than a diamond. But diamonds are the strongest and most beautiful (a good quality one) and in a class of their own, IMO. But I do love tanzanite and rubies though.

      Nothing is "worthless" if it makes you happy. Diamonds are beautiful. They make people happy to look at. That's worth something. Unfortunately, you pay A LOT for the privilege. But think of this: apart from the pure gemology of the incredible stone, the workmanship is insane. Heck, I can't even draw a perfect octagon on a piece of paper, let alone carve one into a rock that's the hardest thing on earth. Could you?

    i like GOG video but for this video, I think this is not a fair comparison. The comparison should be based on the same diamond cut/almost same quality cut to show the differences.

  • @skylark5789

    Although Jonathan is completely correct when he describes the diamond hues, it might be helpful to look at it another way, i.e., Diamond Color Families. In other words, three diamonds, all the same 'color'...J for example, have tones that belong to three different families of the most prevalent diamond colors. So, one "J" will have yellow tones, the second will have brown tones, the third will have grey tones. Yet, they are all technically "J" grade. However, they each belong to three different color "families".
    SO, if you were to take the "J" from the yellow family, and line it up with six progressively darker K, L, M, N, O, P from the yellow family...you would eventually arrive at a dark yellow ( not Canary, btw). Same with the others...you would arrive at brown, or dark grey. This is what Jonathan means when he says the diamond 'graduates' down. He does not mean the diamond changes in color over time.

    SI? That’s not a Diamond anyone should be buying. With lab diamonds coming out, SI will be replaced with VS lab diamonds. Why deal with visible inclusions when you don’t have to?

    • @DiamondInfoMan
      @DiamondInfoMan  Рік тому +1

      We totally agree! We've started selling lab grown diamonds a few years ago and I can't recall any of them being an SI or lower. Because of the minimal price differences, most of our customers go "colorless/VS" these days which is different from earth grown diamonds to where the majority of those sales are eye clean "SI's" since the price difference is much greater.

    You open this segment by saying, let discuss the diffrence in value for the color in diamonds, but you only give an example of "thousands of dollars"?

    • @DiamondInfoMan
      @DiamondInfoMan  10 років тому

      Good question Cheap Bastard. The "thousands" or perhaps even just "hundreds" really depends on the size of the diamond, what color it is on the color scale, the manufacturer and how much they are attempting to get for the goods, etc. It's impossible to pin down a precise amount because so many other factors come into play as well. Let's just say that if you have two diamonds, they are both graded the same clarity, color, cut grade and are relatively close in size there can be up to a 20% difference in price because of these tonal differences. I've also seen instances where there was little to no difference in near colorless diamonds. It's really on a case by case basis.

      Good Old Gold
      I disagree with you on that, You showed four diamonds, comprable in size. You could have put a value on each of the four stones to show as a relaistic example of how the price differs between all four based on color.
      Had you done that and provided a comparison between the value of all four stones-you video would have been perfect.

      George Colson Hi George. You raise a good point. For sake of clarity I will include that in the description above with links to each of the diamonds including a disclaimer because what *these* cost me in particular I would not guarantee across the board. Thank you kindly for your feedback.

    • @DiamondInfoMan
      @DiamondInfoMan  10 років тому

      George Colson Hey George, Just went back and reviewed. There weren't enough things equal about all 3 beyond the cut. Ie. the brown was a 1.64 as compared to 2ct sizes which isn't an apples for apples. I did make a clarifying statement in the description to help people better understand how values can vary though. If I do get in my hands 3 diamonds that are equivalent in carat/color/carat and cut I'm happy to share that of course. in general though on the market we see brown and gray diamonds priced as low as 10-30% less than their yellow counterparts. I appreciate the feedback.

    You kept averting to saying that the darker diamonds are worth less. This is a racism thing here, it is diamonds. "Diamonds" not diamond.

    • @akoyaz2830
      @akoyaz2830 9 років тому +2

      i think its more of a demand and supply thing. when there's higher demand for lighter colors/colorless diamonds, it will be more expensive than the darker diamonds. If now, the darker diamonds are more in demand, the price will be higher than the colorless? someone would control the supply of the darker diamonds into the market, making it a highly demand and expensive piece. dont see why this can lead to racism.
